4 Jason James Head Coach Third Season at UT Martin Third Season Overall Graceland, 2000 Jason James is in his third season at the helm of The University of Tennessee at Martin men s basketball program in After spending the last seven seasons as an assistant coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin, including the role of associate head coach during the Ohio Valley Conference championship season, James was named the program s eighth head coach on June 5, James, a native of. Louis, Mo., is one of the nation s youngest NCAA Division-I men s basketball head coach, but his experience in the UT Martin program has prepared James for the challenge. This has always been my goal, ever since I was 10, the 33-year-old James said. My dad introduced me to basketball and he always coached me and my brothers. He had such a joy in coaching that he made me want to coach and influence young men just like he did. The Skyhawks soared to several new heights as a program in , tripling their win output from the previous season and winning their first OVC tournament game in Nashville in program history. UT Martin s success was atrributed to a steady blend of veterans and one of the most accomplished recruiting classes in program history. Senior Benzor Simmons led the team in scoring and became the program s 15th member of the 1,000 Point Club on Jan. 24, 2011 at SIU Edwardsville. The freshman trio of Terence Smith, Mike Liabo and Troy King all blossomed as well, combining to take home eight adidas OVC Freshman of the Week awards. That marked only the third time that one university has earned that many mentions in a single season since the league started giving out the award in the season. After five losses by single-digits in five of their first 16 games in including a narrow six-point loss at Tennessee on Dec. 29 the Skyhawks began clicking around midseason of the OVC schedule, reeling off a fourgame win streak from Jan. 15 through Jan. 24. A month later, the Skyhawks clinched a spot in the OVC tournament with a dominating victory on the road against Eastern Illinois. In its OVC tournament opener, UT Martin earned a hard-fought victory over Tennessee ate before falling to Tennessee Tech the eventual league runner-up Despite a 4-25 record, James posted several positives during his debut season as bench leader at UT Martin in against arguably one of the toughest schedules in the history of the program. In his ratings for the first week of December, noted college basketball journalist Ken Pomeroy ranked the Skyhawks as having the fourth-toughest non-conference schedule in NCAA Division-I. The Skyhawks wound up playing up nine games against six teams that made the postseason in Despite the quality of opponents, seven of the team s losses were by 10 points or less as the Skyhawks battled injuries and was forced to play players out of position. A bit of history occured in late December of 2009, as the Skyhawks earned back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week accolades for just the second time in school history. Off the court, James players and staff go the extra mile to benefit the local community. The basketball team regularly organizes a team for the West Weakley County Relay for Life every June, raising thousands of dollars. The Skyhawks also fought the ongoing battle with cancer through

5 the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers event at home against Murray ate in 2010 in a nationally-televised game on ESPN-U. In that collaboration, fans made donations for each three-pointer the team made in the month of January. Under James, the Skyhawks have also been involved in the Character Counts program in the Weakley County schools, the D.A.R.E program, and the Boys and Girls clubs in Union City. Over his tenure at UT Martin as an assistant coach, James was directly responsible in the recent resurgance of the Skyhawk program over the last several seasons. Since his first season on the Skyhawk bench in 2002, James has coached seven of UT Martin s 15 all-time 1,000 point scorers. He also recruited two of UT Martin s all-time great Division-I players in Jared Newson and Lester Hudson. Newson ranks fourth in all-time program history in points scored after playing just three seasons with the Skyhawks. Newson ranks in the top-10 in seven different all-time career UT Martin categories, including points (1,347, fourth), field goals made (452, fifth), field goals attempted (1,016, fifth), free throws made (378, second), free throws attempted (526, first), rebounds (535, seventh), blocks (43, 10th) and steals (128, seventh). After he exhausted his eligibility at UT Martin, Newson attended training camp with the Dallas Mavericks before becoming an overseas fan favorite for his acrobatic slamdunks in Germany. In Hudson, James found a diamond in the rough that became one of the best all-around players in the NCAA and eventually would be chosen by the Boston Celtics in the 2009 NBA Draft. In Hudson s collegiate debut, he torched eventual national runner-up Memphis for 35 points, but the legend of Hudson was just getting started. Just eight days later, Hudson grabbed national headlines when he became the first-ever NCAA Division-I men s basketball player to record a quadruple-double (25 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 steals) vs. Central Baptist on Nov. 13, Later that season, Hudson became the first-ever UT Martin player to be named an All-American since the program joined the Division-I ranks in That season, James helped guide the Skyhawks to a school-record for OVC wins in one season (11), as UT Martin won the OVC regular season championship for the first time ever. The Skyhawks also hosted and won a first-round OVC Tournament game for the first time in UT Martin history, before falling to eventual-tournament champion Austin Peay by a single point (78-77). In that season the Skyhawks broke or tied 12 team and individual game/season records, including most wins in a single season (22), and longest winning streak (11 games from Jan. 10 through Feb. 18). After winning its firstever OVC regular-season championship, the Skyhawks earned a trip to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), the first postseason appearance for a UT Martin team in its brief Division-I history. In that game, the Skyhawks hung tough with SEC member Auburn on Auburn s home floor before falling James coaching philosophy is simple: play the game the right way and the rest will fall into place. I tell the guys all the time performance counts, James said. Everybody is judged on their performance, rather that s fair or not. If we can show up and perform night in and night out, the wins and losses will take care of themselves. Our program is going to compete, fight, scratch and claw for 40 minutes. Off the court, James is an intense scholar of the game. He spends countless hours watching tape, studying other coaches and reading books about all phases of the game of basketball. James came to UT Martin from Forest Park Community College in. Louis, Mo., where he was an assistant men s basketball coach for two years. The team finished second in the region James first year, and many FPCC players during James tenure went on to play Division I and Division II basketball. Before his stint at Forest Park, James taught physical education and health for one year at Ritenour Middle School in. Louis, while also coaching a high school all-star team from the state of Michigan that placed third out of 54 teams at the USA Junior Nationals. James earned his bachelor s degree in physical education and health with a coaching endorsement from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa in For two seasons he served as captain of the Graceland University basketball team. He was voted Graceland Freshman Basketball Player of the Year for the season and was named the team s MVP during the season. In the fall of 2010, James was enshrined in the fourth class of the Parkway Alumni Association Hall of Fame, as he was recognized for his contributions since graduating from Parkway West High School in. Louis in James married the former Dani Walker of Oxford, Miss. in May 2010 and the couple has one child, Sadie (1).

The Skyhawks have squared off against in-state foe Memphis (0-5) the most, followed by Central Florida (1-1), Southern Miss (0-1) and UAB (0-1). UT Martin has never faced East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa or UTEP. LONE SENIOR SMITH STEPPING UP Senior guard Dane Smith has taken over as one of the team s best players in the last five games. After logging only four minutes in the season-opener against Louisville, Smith has seen his minutes and production numbers go way up. He has led the team in scoring once and led the team in rebounding on two different occasions, averaging 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds in 29.6 minutes per game. In a span of three games, Smith tallied new career-highs in the points column. Against Rochester on Nov. 19, he produced 15 points (to go along with 11 rebounds for his first career double-double). Six days later at No. 24 Mississippi ate, he poured in 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. As a junior (33 games), Smith cracked double-figures twice. He has already produced two double-digit scoring outputs in six games in SQUARING OFF AGAINST THE BIGGER CONFERENCES In addition to playing Mississippi ate, UT Martin also took on Louisville of the Big East in its season-opener on Nov. 11. The Skyhawks have played at least one game against a team from the Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pacific-12 or Southeastern Conferences in every year since The Skyhawks have played 43 games in those 20 years, led by 24 games against SEC opponents. They have also faced eight Big Ten teams, four Big East, three ACC, three Pac-12 and two Big 12 opponents in that span. LITTLE ROCK NATIVES PLAY BIG AT OHIO Junior Jeremy Washington and freshman Myles Taylor enjoyed career games when the Skyhawks took on Ohio on Nov. 13. Both players hail from Little Rock, Ark. and prepped at Hall High School. Washington came off the bench to pour in a game-high 17 points and grab nine rebounds in 32 minutes, while Taylor recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. QUICK HITS UTM FALLS AT NO. 9 LOUISVILLE The Skyhawks hung close with No. 9 Louisville for the first five minutes in the season-opener on Nov. 11. However, a 14-0 run by the Cardinals in a stretch of 3:15 gave Louisville its first big lead and the hole turned out to be too deep for the Skyhawks to dig out of, as they fell LIABO S HISTORIC SCORING PACE SURGES ON IN Last season, Mike Liabo became the first freshman in UT Martin history to lead the team in scoring in OVC play (12.2 points per game). He also led the team with 22 double-figure scoring games. This season, Liabo has led the team in scoring in four out of six games and has hit double-figures in all but one game. Overall, Liabo has cracked doublefigures in the scoring column in 27 out of his 38 career games, including a dozen games of 15 or more points. UTM PICKED EIGHTH IN OVC POLL The Skyhawks have been picked to finish eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll, as chosen by the league s head coaches and SID s. UT Martin finished eighth in last season s final standings but won six of its final 11 league games and downed Tennessee ate in the first round of the OVC tournament. The Skyhawks, who received 73 points in the preseason poll, return seven players - including three starters - from Austin Peay (10 first-place votes, 185 points) was predicted to win the league title, followed by Tennessee Tech (eight, 181) and Murray ate (three, 169). Tennessee ate (145), Morehead ate (one, 128), Southeast Missouri (106) and Eastern Kentucky (90) followed above UT Martin. Eastern Illinois (67), Jacksonville ate (40) and SIU Edwardsville (27) rounded out the poll. LIMITED DIVISION-I EXPERIENCE Of the 16 players on UT Martin s roster in , not a single player has more than one year of experience at the Division-I level. The Skyhawks only have one senior listed on the roster in Dane Smith, who transferred in from Kilgore College before his Skyhawk debut last season. UTM PRESEASON ACCOLADES College Sports Madness unveiled its preseason All-OVC teams, recognizing UT Martin s Terence Smith (second team), Mike Liabo (third team) and Corderio Maclin (fourth team). In Lindy s preseason magazine, Maclin was chosen as the league s Newcomer of the Year. ADDING SIZE TO THE FRONTCOURT UT Martin head coach Jason James and his staff searched across the nation to find some size and depth at the post position, adding four newcomers who will look to make an immediate impact. The average size of the four is and pounds. Another factor which heavily weighed in to UT Martin s decision to sign the four was the winning pedigree they brought to the Skyhawk program. Combined, the three junior college recruits (Eli York, Corderio Maclin and Jeremy Washington) went in their junior college careers, while incoming freshman signee Myles Taylor was part of three state championships in his high school career. Washington (Hall High School in Little Rock, Ark.) and Maclin (Ridgeway High School in Memphis) also were part of state championship teams in high school in IRARRAZABAL JOINS COACHING STAFF After completing a stellar four-year playing career ( ) at UT Martin, Andres Irarrazabal joins the bench as a graduate assistant. He played in 108 games (42 starts), playing two seasons under current head coach Jason James. Irarrazabal is one of just three players in Skyhawk history to have played in six OVC Tournament games. He is also one of four players in UT Martin men s basketball history to have tallied at least 300 points, 300 rebounds, 50 assists, 50 blocks and 40 steals while shooting 50 percent or better from the floor for a career. SKYHAWK DUO FROM LAST SEASON SIGN PRO CONTRACTS A pair of Skyhawk greats who closed out their stellar careers last season have moved on to play professional basketball. Benzor Simmons, who became the program s 15th member of the 1,000 Point Club last season, inked a contract with the Caneros de la Romana of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto (LNB) in the Dominican Republic on June 26. On Nov. 3, former UT Martin star Reuben Clayton was drafted with the fourth pick in the eighth round (115th overall) by the Reno Bighorns. Clayton amassed 878 points in three seasons at UT Martin. As sophomores, both players were key reserves on UT Martin s first-ever OVC championship team in
