1 JANUARY 2014 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 4 By: Molly Ferguson and Sam Malafronte Five Pillars of Abington Sports Toughness Teamwork Pride Character Service Abington Sports News A newspaper about the athletes at Abington High, by the athletes at Abington High, recognizing them for their accomplishments on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the community. Girls Basketball: Undefeated in League Play The Lady Wave basketball team went undefeated in the South Shore League which is the second time in three years this has happened. The 17-1 girls basketball team is looking at either the number one or two seed in the MIAA tournament which starts the week of February 23. The lone loss early in the season was to Brockton, a Division 1 team, the girls fought hard but in the end fell short by 3 points. This past week the girls squared off against Brockton for the second time and won by 3 points led by Jenny Worden s 20 points. Senior captain Maura Hurley, followed by her teammates have high expectations for the rest of the season and the tournament and coaches Steve Moore and Jen Clifford do as well. With practice and games 6 days a week, the Green Wave continues to improve as they look to hit their climax once tournament play starts. The target is on the girls back this season, but the girls have yet to become complacent entering any games. With series sweeps against Norwell and Rockland, The Lady Wave has taken over the South Shore League with a record of Senior Erin Foley and sophomore Jenny Worden, the two point guards average between points per game. Along with the rest of the starting line up, Brianna Donovan, Maura Hurley and Sydney Hamilton the girls in green are consistently putting up 60+ points per game. Coming into the season, the team sat down to discuss what their goals were and how they were going to go about executing them. Abington captured another league championship with their win against East Bridgewater this past week. The Lady Wave team looks forward to a successful run in the State Tournament. Either way this determined group of girls will leave it all on the court, and are hoping for a state championship run in the tournament. 2 Page 2 ABINGTON SPORTS NEWS 2014 Div. 5 Football State Champions On December 6th, the Green Wave squared off against Northbridge High School for their 4th Super Bowl in 12 years. The seniors on the football team capped off a memorable three years at Abington High School accomplished a 36-3 record over their varsity careers. The class of 2015 football players accomplished many goals which will go down in history. Being the first Abington football team to play at Gillette Stadium, winning two Super Bowls (First class in school history to do so), first team to win a State Championship due to the new playoff format, and also one of the top 3 best records in school history for a football class. This memorable blow out at Gillette was full of highlight reel plays. Whether it was Shawn Donovan s 60 yard counter to start the second half for a touchdown, or Aidan Cawley s kick return for a touchdown, or the defensive lineman Brian O Donovan intercepting a screen and returning it down to the 3 yard line, each one was unique in its own way. The 2014 Division 5 State Champion Football team is excitingly awaiting their championship award ceremony on March 15th to receive their championship rings.

3 JANUARY 2014 Page 3 Winter Cheer Jenna Wells: Jenna is an Abington High graduate from the class of She was a captain of both the soccer team and softball team while in high school. Since her time at Abington High School, Jenna has graduated from Purdue University and completed the ROTC program. After four years of college, Jenna served overseas in Afghanistan as a Captain in the Marines. She was the officer in charge of Operations Control Element 1. Abington High School s winter cheer team is working hard this season to get ready for their competitions. The girls kicked off their season placing second at the Whitman Hanson invitational. Competing in an invitational heps the girls prepare for the South Shore League competition. Senior captains Olivia Maly and Jenna Warsheski have high hopes for the season. The SSL competition will determine if the ladies move on to regionals, which they will then need to come in 1st, 2nd or 3rd (or scoring an 80) to allow them to go to states. Practicing hard Monday through Friday, the girls are working to fulfill their goals in the 2015 winter season. With many of the girls returning from the successful fall season, the Green Wave is expecting great things from these hard working girls. Jenna returned to Abington High School to speak with the captains of the fall sports teams on September 9th. As an officer in the military, she displayed the highest level of

5 Page 5 Boys Basketball After a disappointing season in 2014 the Abington High School boys basketball team looked for a true identity which had been lost over the last few years. With the new coach Peter Serino at the helm, and his partner in crime James Smith back at Abington, they have forced a hard nose attitude which the team has embraced. With captains James Landers, Luca Cerasani and George Cellini, they have led the team from the fields onto the court with a very smooth transition. Abington got started a week late with 12 of the 13 players being apart of the 2014 State Champion football team. The basketball team started off very well getting coach Serino s first varsity win versus South Shore Christian Academy. Notable wins the team has had since the first game is a thriller versus East Bridgewater in which Abington s squad came back from an 18 point deficit to win the game. Also Abington beat Rockland for the first time in 27 years and handed Norwell their only league loss to date. The boys basketball team took home their tenth victory on February 11th against Monomoy to qualify for the MIAA tournament. With three games remaining in the season, Abington looks for at least two more wins to clinch a first round home game in the tournament. Abington squares off against South Shore Christian Academy on Saturday and then is seeking to repeat in the Cotter Tournament which starts on Monday when Cardinal Spellman comes to our home court in the first round of the tournament. Honoring a Hero The Abington High School Boys basketball team sported the camouflage warm-up shirts in honor of Sgt. Daniel Vasselian. Danny an Abington graduate was killed in action on December 23, The boys basketball team unveiled their warm-ups on the one year anniversary this past month on December 23rd to honor a man who portrayed many elements Abington athletes strive for.

Abington Hockey: Looking for a Tournament Push The Abington hockey team currently with a record of 9-5-1, still has a promising second half of the season ahead of them. With only a few games to go before making the tournament, Coach Smith has been working the boys hard on the ice either in the morning or afternoons. Captain Matt Curran talked about their big win against Hanover, we lost three times to them last year so it felt good to pull off the win. Curran along with assistant captains Chris Fay (Sr) and Anthony Chiavaroli (Jr) talk highly of their team this season. Seniors Jake Morse, Mike Morse and Cam Mariani (a recent transfer from Archbishop Williams), also take the role in leadership, on and off the ice. As the season progresses the team will continue to work on their game in order to make it to tournament. Abington Wrestling The Abington High School wrestling team is in its second year of existence partnering with Rockland. The team holds many more Abington athletes than it did last year. This years team includes seniors Troy Panico, Christina Howe, juniors Christian Bermudez, Jared Aprile, Sophomore Alex Freeman and Freshman Bobby Carey who all work very hard on the wrestling squad. Hockey Sports the Camo Jerseys to Recognize Vasselian The Green Wave puck team also sported the camouflage jerseys similar to how the boys basketball team did in December to recognize Sgt. Vasselian. The picture below is of the hockey team the night before they wore the jerseys getting a night skate in on Island Grove pond. They made an $800 donation to the Danny V memorial Fund as well.

7 2014 All Scholastic Players Etienne Bourgoin won the division 3 state championship his senior year he was also name Boston Globe division 3 golf player of the year. Senior captain Brian O Donovan took control of the offensive line this past year, and dominated leading them to the State Championship. Senior captain Luca Cerasani led the football team in sacks, second in tackles and was named Boston Globe and Boston Herald All Scholastic honors. Junior Shawn Donovan led the team in yardage over the 2014 season. Senior captain Sam Malafronte led the football team in tackles. Senior captain Vickie Curtin led the girls soccer team with her work effort in Senior Nick Sideropoulos won many meets this past fall and set the course record at Abington High School. Senior captain Bryan Dwyer led the offense at the QB position and finishing an impressive career being a mobile athlete who made many plays. Senior Aidan Cawley led the football team in receptions, also had a pick 6 in the state semifinal game and a punt return in the state final.
