10 In his first game back after a torn ACL ended his promising 2014 season, QB Carson Palmer picked up where he left off throwing for 3 TDs, no INTs or sacks, and topped 300 passing yards in a Cardinals win. With the season-opening victory, Palmer became to 1st Cards QB since Jim Hart in 1974 to win 7 straight games and improved to 14-2 over his last 16 starts. The Saints had reached the red zone 5 times but had to settle for FGs from rookie Zack Hocker on 4 of them as the Cards D surrendered just 1 TD. Larry Fitzgerald led with 6 catches for 87 yards and the team averaged almost 5 yards per rush. took the opening kickoff 80 yards in 9 plays and got on the scoreboard first when Palmer found WR John Brown in the end zone on 3rd-n-goal from the 10. After a 37-yard Hocker FG, RB Andre Ellington made it 14-3 with a 1-yard TD run at the end of a 5-play, 88-yard drive; the biggest chunk came on a 48-yard completion to TE Darren Fells that moved it to the 18. The Saints responded with their lone TD drive of the day and made it when Drew Brees connected with Brandon Coleman on a 12-yard scoring hook-up. That drive was extended when was flagged for 12 men on the field as the Saints were punting and the penalty gave them a fresh set of downs. On the opening play of the 2nd half, Brees hit WR Willie Snead with a 63-yard pass to the 12 but the Cards D forced them to settle for a 23-yard Hocker FG that made it a 1-point game at Later in the quarter the Saints had the ball at the 45 but on 3rd-n-7, S Rashad Johnson INT d Brees pass that led to a 43-yard Chandler Catanzaro FG that made it The lead was trimmed to 1 again after another Saints FG and momentum seemed to be with the Saints. However, Palmer & Co came thru; runs by Ellington & Chris Johnson helped move the chains before Fells hauled in a 17-yard pass from Palmer that gave an 8-point lead. New Orleans, however, would not go away. A 59-yard catch-n-run by Mark Ingram took it to the 15 but the D again held the Saints to just a FG. Ahead just 5, the Cards next drive stalled before a Drew Butler punt pinned the Saints at their own 3. The Cards forced a 3-n-out and then took over at their own 43 with 1:49 left and needed just a 1st down or 2 to seal the game. On 2nd-n-8 from the 45 and the whole world expecting a run, called for a short pass to RB David Johnson that the rookie hauled in and took 55 yards down the sideline for a game-sealing TD. WR Larry Fitzgerald hauled in a regular-season best 3 TD passes and Carson Palmer threw 4 total. produced 7 total TDs including one in each of their 4 red zone trips. The defense scored its own TD on a Tony Jefferson INT off Jay Cutler that also ended the veteran signal caller s afternoon late in the 1st half when he was injured on the return. The scoring began as soon as the game did when rookie RB David Johnson returned the opening kickoff 108 yards for a TD. It was the longest play in franchise history and a yard shy of the NFL record for longest kickoff return. Chicago tied it late in the 1st quarter when Cutler connected on a 48-yard TD to WR Josh Bellamy. answered on its next drive, taking advantage of a 42-yard pass interference penalty that moved it to the 11 and Palmer capitalized with a 6-yard TD to WR Jaron Brown. The Bears then tied it again when rookie RB Jeremy Langford s 1-yard run capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive. The Cards surged ahead again with an 80-yard TD drive that was also aided by a long DPI penalty (38 yards to the 16). That set up an 8-yard Fitzgerald TD. In all the Bears were flagged 14 times for 170 yards. The game s pivotal play came with 3 minutes to go before halftime. With Cutler a perfect 8-8 passing, the Bears faced 2nd-n-9 from the CHI21 when Jefferson INT d a pass at the 26 and ran it in for the TD. was now up 28-14, Cutler was lost for the game with hamstring injury suffered on the return and back-up Jimmy Clausen took over. quickly forced a punt but rookie JJ Nelson muffed the return and CHI recovered at the 22. The Cards D held the Bears to a FG but misfortune again struck for on the next play from scrimmage when Palmer s pass to the flat was tipped and picked by LB Jared Allen. CHI took over at the 12 with :54 to go in the 2nd but the Cards again held to just a FG and it was at intermission. On the opening drive of the 3rd Patrick Peterson picked a Clausen pass, turning the ball over to the offense at the CHI32. The takeaway led to a 28-yard Palmer-Fitzgerald hook-up on a flea flicker that made it The next offensive series ended with a 13-yard David Johnson TD run that upped the lead to with 6:06 to go in the 3rd. A 3rd Robbie Gould FG made it after 3 and a 3rd Fitzgerald TD pass from Palmer provided the only points of the final quarter. 11 CARDINALS 47, 49ERS 7 SEPTEMBER 27, 2015 UNIV. OF PHOENIX STADIUM (63,663) A week after their convincing 25-point win at Chicago, the Cardinals returned home to face the Niners and delivered an even more dominating allaround effort with a 47-7 victory. Offensively, they rolled up 446 total yards thanks in part to a 110-yard, 2 TD rushing effort from RB Chris Johnson, who started in place of Andre Ellington. Through the air, Larry Fitzgerald continued his torrid pace and had a pair of TDs among his game-high 9 catches for 134 yards while Carson Palmer threw for 311 yards en route to his 9th straight win as a starter (16th in his last 18). Perhaps more impressive was the play of an defense that opened the game with a pair of INT touchdowns 2 minutes apart from DBs Justin Bethel and Tyrann Mathieu, respectively. The pick sixes were 2 of the 4 INTs thrown by Colin Kaepernick in his first 4 pass attempts. In all, the D held San Fran to 53 net passing yards and just 156 overall while allowing the 49ers to cross midfield just once all game, after a punt return to the Arizona 19-yard line. After the INT returns put up 14-0 early, the next two Cards drives went 81 yards and ended on Johnson TD runs that made it 28-0 midway thru the 2nd. San Fran s lone score of the day came after Jarryd Hayne s 37-yard punt return to the 19 set-up a 12-yard Kaepernick TD run that made it A rare Palmer INT gave San Fran an opportunity for more points but Mathieu s 2nd INT of the day gave the ball back at the SF25 with :30 let in the 1st half. It led to a 22-yard Chandler Catanzaro FG that gave the Cards a 31-7 lead at intermission. On the 1st play of the 2nd half CB Jerraud Powers picked off Kaepernick and 4 plays later Palmer and Fitzgerald connected on a 4-yard TD pass. Later in the 3rd, Bethel downed a Drew Butler punt inside the 1 and on the next snap LB Kevin Minter tackled RB Carlos Hyde in the end zone for a safety that made it The only further scoring came on a long drive (13 plays, 79 yards, 7:42) in the 4th that also ended on a Palmer-to-Fitzgerald TD hook-up. The victory improved the Cards to 3-0 for the 3rd time in 4 years and gave them a 2-game lead in the NFC West. The 47-point explosion gave a franchise record 126 after 3 games, 4th most in NFL history after 3. OF PHOENIX STADIUM (63,146) The Cardinals experienced defeat for the first time in 2015 and fell to 3-1 following a 2-point home loss to the Rams. It was a typically tough and physical NFC West match-up that came down to a couple key plays and it was the Rams who made more of them. Arizona outgained St. Louis and had twice as many first downs (26-13). While they moved the ball well between the 20 s, the Cards came away with just 4 Chandler Catanzaro FGs on their first 4 red zone trips and committed 3 costly turnovers while the Rams had none. Those 3 takeaways led to 17 St. Louis points that proved to be pivotal. After not trailing at any point in their first 3 games, the Cards never led in this one. Rookie David Johnson fumbled the opening kickoff and the Rams recovered at the 17. Three plays later Nick Foles connected with WR Tavon Austin on a 12-yard scoring pass that gave STL an early 7-0 lead. Later in the opening quarter, had a 1st-n-goal from the 1 but was forced to settle for a 21-yard FG. The next Cards drive also penetrated the STL red zone on their next drive but they again came away with 3 on a short Catanzaro FG. After the defense forced its 3rd straight 3-n-out, the Cards seemed on the verge of taking the lead. However Carson Palmer s deep middle throw to John Brown was INT d in the end zone by Janoris Jenkins. The Rams came up with a Greg Zuerlein FG on the ensuing drive that made it Just before halftime moved 56 yards to set-up Catanzaro s 3rd FG that made it 10-9 at intermission. Early in the 3rd, Palmer hit Larry Fitzgerald for a 22-yard gain on 3rd-n-2 but the Rams knocked the ball loose and recovered at their own 20. Three straight Todd Gurley runs moved it to the 18 where on 3rd-n-5 Foles hit Stedman Bailey for a TD that made it The next two drives went deep into STL territory but each again ended on Catanzaro FGs that trimmed the Rams lead to with 11:57 to play. On the next drive, a 52-yard Gurley run took it to the 16 and ultimately led to another Foles-Austin TD on 3rd down that put STL up with 8:16 remaining. The Cards desperately needed to answer and they did. Two plays after Fitzgerald picked up 14 yards on a key 4th-n-4 at the STL33, Palmer lofted a pass down the middle that David Johnson gathered in for a TD that made it a 2-point game with 4:38 left. After sending the Rams 3-n-out, took over at its own 37 with 2:51 remaining. By the 2:00 warning the Cards reached the STL44 before 3 straight incompletions resulted in turning it over on downs with 1:44 to play. They never saw the ball again as Gurley and the Rams ran out the remaining time. 12 CARDINALS 42, LIONS 17 OCTOBER 11, 2015 FORD FIELD (60,816) On a day when the other three NFC West teams all lost, the Cardinals improved to 4-1 with a dominating performance at Detroit that extended their division lead to 2 games. They forced 6 Lions turnovers (4 INTs, 2 fumbles) and had none themselves. Safety Rashad Johnson had a hand in 3 of those takeaways (2 INTs, 1 fumble recovery) and the defense as a whole gave the Lions everything they could handle. In just 45 offensive snaps, scored 42 points including a 28-point explosion in the 2nd quarter. Chris Johnson had 103 rushing yards on 11 carries to lead a ground attack that gained 187 yards overall. Carson Palmer had as many TD passes as incomplete passes (3) and the Cards eclipsed the 40-point mark for the 3rd time in 4 games. The Cards opened the game with takeaways on the first 2 Detroit possessions. Rashad Johnson picked Matthew Stafford on the opening drive of the game and Tony Jefferson forced an Ameer Abdullah fumble on the second. However, was unable to capitalize on either and it was Detroit that scored first on Theo Riddick s 6-yard TD pass from Stafford. The Cards answered when David Johnson s 35-yard kickoff return was followed immediately by a 25-yard Chris Johnson run with a personal foul penalty tacked on. That set-up a 14-yard Palmer TD pass to TE Darren Fells that tied the game. On the next series, the Lions faced a 2nd-n-15 at their own 42 when DE Cory Redding sniffed out a screen pass, INT d the ball and returned it 30 yards to the 4. On the next play, David Johnson punched it in to put up After a Lions punt backed the Cards up to their own 1, Palmer hit John Brown with a 49-yard completion down the right sideline. Chris Johnson s 40-yard run then took it to the 2 where David Johnson again ran it in. On the ensuing series, Jefferson forced a Golden Tate fumble that Rashad Johnson recovered at the DET22. That led to an 18-yard scoring pass from Palmer to John Brown that gave Arizona TDs on 4 straight possessions and made it 28-7 at the half. On Detroit s 1st series of the 2nd half, Patrick Peterson picked off Stafford and returned it 40 yards to the DET32. The INT not only ended the Lions drive but also the afternoon for Stafford who was replaced by Dan Orlovsky thereafter. A 26-yard Larry Fitzgerald catch took it to the 2 and a play later Palmer found him again with a quick scoring slant that made it After a Lions FG made it with 11:51 left, Drew Stanton came on in relief of Palmer. His 3rd snap was a handoff to Andre Ellington that the RB took 63 yards for a TD. Four plays later, Rashad Johnson notched his 2nd INT of the game, this time off of Orlovsky. But despite a halftime edge in total offensive yards and advantage in passing yards, they led just 10-3 at intermission. Missed opportunities, penalties and turnovers proved their undoing as Pittsburgh outscored Arizona 22-3 in the 2nd half. The Steelers did it behind QB Landry Jones who came on in the 3rd quarter to replace Michael Vick (hamstring), who himself was starting in place of injured Ben Roethlisberger (knee). The loss dropped to 4-2 and overshadowed a career-day from WR John Brown who finished with 10 catches for 196 yards. The Cards opened the scoring on their 2nd offensive series of the game when Carson Palmer s 3-yard pass to WR Michael Floyd made it 7-0. They were near midfield on the next drive when Palmer s pass deflected off TE Jermaine Gresham and was INT d by LB Lawrence Timmons. Still up 7-0, had another opportunity when Larry Fitzgerald s 44-yard catch-n-run took it to the PIT34 but they came away pointless when Chandler Catanzaro missed a 47-yard FG try. The Steelers took advantage of that field position and got on the board via Chris Boswell s 47-yard FG. Late in the 1st half, moved to the PIT13. On 3rd-n-9 from the 13, officials missed a defensive pass interference in the end zone vs. Floyd 2 plays after negating a Floyd TD with a questionable offensive interference call against him. Instead had to settle for Catanzaro s 31-yard FG that made it 10-3 at the half. The Steelers opened the 3rd quarter with a 48-yard Boswell FG to make it On the 2nd play of the ensuing drive, John Brown fumbled on a reception and Pittsburgh recovered at the 32. Four plays later Jones and WR Martavis Bryant connected on a 9-yard TD pass that put the Steelers up after the 2-point try was unsuccessful. A 51-yard Boswell FG on the next PIT possession made it late in the 3rd. answered as John Brown s 42-completion took it to the Steeler 27 but they gained just 8 more yards and Catanzaro s 39-yard FG made it The Steelers then moved 68 yards in 13 plays and extended the lead to on Boswell s 4th FG, this one a 28-yarder midway thru the 4th. Trailing by 5, the Cards moved to the PIT20 in 8 plays but just before the 2:00 warning, Palmer s 1st down pass attempt to John Brown was INT d in the end zone by S Mike Mitchell. 13 CARDINALS 26, RAVENS 18 OCTOBER 26, 2015 UNIV. OF PHOENIX STADIUM (64,722) In a Monday night home game, the Cards held on to defeat Baltimore and improve to 5-2. The Ravens entered the game 1-5 but had not played a game decided by more than 6 points and would not go quietly in this one either. RB Chris Johnson rushed for 122 yards; 26 came on a 1st quarter TD run and 62 came on a 3rd quarter run that he kept alive by rolling over a defender. S Tyrann Mathieu s performance led the defense while a huge play from special teams ace Justin Bethel turned the game late in the 2nd quarter. The Cards did not commit a turnover but took it away twice themselves including a game-saving INT from Tony Jefferson in the closing seconds. After the Ravens struck first with a 44-yard Justin Tucker FG at the end of their opening series, the Cardinals responded. Back-to-back Carson Palmer passes to TE Jermaine Gresham (21 yards) and WR Michael Floyd (33 yards) quickly moved it to the BAL26 where Chris Johnson took a handoff up the middle, spun from a tackler, bounced to the outside and then into the end zone to make it 7-3. It remained that way until the Ravens capped an 84-yard drive with a 14-yard Justin Forsett TD run that put Baltimore up 10-7 with 3:54 left in the 1st half. The Cards appeared to go 3-n-out but on the Raven return by Jeremy Ross, Cards all-pro special teamer Justin Bethel stripped him and recovered the fumble at the 20. Three plays later Palmer hit Floyd with a quick 3-yard slant that gave the Cards a lead at the half. Arizona opened the 3rd quarter with consecutive drives that produced 21-yard Chandler Catanzaro field goals. The first was set-up by a 35-yard completion to the BAL9. The second was aided by another Chris Johnson run; on this one he appeared to be tackled but his knee never hit the ground and he kept going for a 62-yard gain to the BAL8. Up 20-10, the Cards opened the 4th quarter with an 11-play, 79-yard drive that Palmer finished with a 4-yard TD pass to John Brown. Now up after the kick failed, was punting back the Baltimore with 4:40 left but the kick was blocked by Ravens CB Asa Jackson and recovered at the 1. After a Kyle Juszczyk TD reception and successful 2-point conversion, Arizona s lead was just 8 with 4:26 remaining. The Cards picked up one 1st down but were forced to punt it back to the Ravens who took over at their own 24 with 1:53 left and no timeouts. In 10 plays, Flacco moved it to the 4 with :18 left. An illegal shift penalty pushed it back to the 9 and with 6 seconds left, S Tony Jefferson INT d a Flacco pass in the end zone to seal the game. Carson Palmer threw for 374 yards and 4 TDs while RB Chris Johnson & WR Michael Floyd topped 100 yards rushing and receiving, respectively. The offense rolled up 491 total yards and was an eye-popping 13 of 16 on 3rd down (81%). Defensively, the Cards posted a 2nd half shutout while surrendering just 5 first downs and 98 total yards (5 rushing) after intermission. received the game s opening kickoff and moved 82 yards in 11 plays, capping the drive with an 11-yard Palmer pass to TE Troy Niklas. The key play was a 1-handed 38-yard grab by rookie WR J.J. Nelson who saw his most extensive action to date filling in for injured John Brown (hamstring). After that though, the Browns took advantage of Cardinal mistakes to score 20 unanswered points. A Chris Johnson fumble set up Cleveland s 1st TD, a 9-yard pass from Josh McCown to WR Brian Hartline that tied it at 7. The offense didn t cross midfield on its next 3 drives as Palmer barely missed on deep throws to Floyd and Larry Fitzgerald. The Browns meanwhile produced TD drives that McCown ended with short 3rd-n-goal passes to TE Gary Barnidge and another to Hartline. Their 3 straight TD drives put the Browns up 20-7 with 4:56 left in the 2nd quarter. A Chandler Catanzaro FG as the 1st half expired would make it On Arizona s 4th snap of the 2nd half, Palmer went deep down the right sideline to Floyd who hauled it in for a 60-yard TD to trim the lead to 3. Patrick Peterson s 38-yard punt return then set up at the CLE48 on the ensuing offensive series. On the next play a 35-yard completion to WR Jaron Brown moved it to the 13 and led to another TD pass to Niklas on 3rd-n-goal from the 1. Up 24-20, the next 2 Cards drives ended with a Palmer INT and Chris Johnson fumble. The latter gave the Browns possession at the 28 and a golden opportunity to re-take the lead. But on the 1st play of the 4th quarter, S Rashad Johnson made a leaping INT of a McCown pass in the end zone and the Cards never looked back. They controlled the ball for 11:42 of the final 15 minutes. In that time they added a Fitzgerald TD reception, his 7th of the year that ended a 12-play, 80-yard drive and then a late Catanzaro FG. 14 CARDINALS 39, SEAHAWKS 32 NOVMEBER 15, 2015 CENTURYLINK FIELD (69,005) In a wild week 10 showdown in Seattle on Sunday Night Football, the Cards jumped out to a big lead but saw it evaporate into the chilly November night. Against the two-time defending NFC champs in their typically hostile environment, Arizona absorbed some shots but shook them off to re-take the lead. The hard-fought win moved the Cards to 7-2 and increased their division lead over the Rams and Seahawks to 3 games with 7 to play. Against the NFL s #2 defense (#2 against the pass), the Cards threw for 363 yards. Both Larry Fitzgerald (10-130) & Michael Floyd (7-113, 2TD) eclipsed the century mark. The game took almost 4 hours thanks in part to 6 replay reviews and 23 total penalties (202 yards) called by referee Clete Blakeman and his crew. After a scoreless 1st quarter, built a 19-0 l2nd quarter lead thanks to a FG, a safety and a pair of Carson Palmer TD passes to Floyd. Seattle got on the board late in the 2nd quarter with a Will Tukuafu 1-yard scoring plunge but quickly answered. Chandler Catanzaro s 43-yard FG as the 1st half expired made it In a scary moment midway thru the 2nd, guard Mike Iupati was carted off with a neck injury and was taken to a local hospital. He was later released and flew back to with the team. The two teams traded 3rd quarter FGs to make it before Russell Wilson & Doug Baldwin connected on 32-yard TD. While led late in the 3rd, momentum was shifting towards the host Seahawks and was fully on their side after a pair of sacks/strips of Palmer led directly to a pair of Seattle TDs within a 2-minute span. The first gave Seattle possession at the at the 3 and Marshawn Lynch punched it in a play later. The 2nd was returned 22 yards for a TD by LB Bobby Wagner. As a result the Seahawks led after their two failed 2-point attempts failed and the Cards desperately needed Palmer to engineer a comeback. He did, leading the team on a 10-play, 83-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard TD pass to TE Jermaine Gresham. Up 32-29, the Cards D forced a punt returning it to the offense at its own 20 with 6:02 to play. Filling in for Floyd (hamstring), Jaron Brown had 3 huge catches late including an 8-yard reception on 3rd-n-3 at the 27. With 2:07 left faced a pivotal 3rd-n-4 at the SEA48. OF PHOENIX STADIUM (64,745) In their 100th game at University of Phoenix Stadium and 2nd straight on Sunday Night Football, the Cards faced the 8-1 Bengals and their #1 ranked defense. The flexed game certainly proved worthy of the big stage. In a back and forth affair, fell behind early before exploding for 21 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter. Cincy would rally late to tie it but former Bengal Carson Palmer, who bounced back from 2 early INTs, capped his memorable night by moving into position for the game-winning FG in the closing seconds. In the absence of starting WR Michael Floyd, rookie speedster J.J. Nelson stepped up with 4 catches for 142 yards and a 64-yard TD. On the game s opening drive the Cards advanced to the CIN46 but a sack backed them up into a 3rd-n-20 and Palmer s pass to Fitzgerald was INT d by CB Leon Hall. After a series of punts, took over at its own 37 but on the first play Palmer s pass down the deep middle was INT d by FS Reggie Nelson who returned it to the CIN36. On the next play Andy Dalton connected deep down the left sideline on a 42-yard completion to WR AJ Green that took it to the 22. Six plays later Dalton hit TE Tyler Eifert with a TD on 3rd-n-goal from the 3. The Cards responded with a 10-play, 80-yard game-tying TD drive. On s 4th snap of the 3rd, Palmer launched a deep pass that Nelson hauled in for a 64-yard TD to tie the game at 14. Early in the 4th, Hill s 1-yard TD run trimmed the lead to Midway thru the 4th quarter, the Bengals had the ball when Markus Golden sacked Dalton forcing a fumble that Deone Bucannon recovered at the CIN10. That set up a 24-yard Chandler Catanzaro FG that put up 10 with 6:27 to go. But the Bengals fought back. After another Eifert TD and a 43-yard Mike Nugent FG, the game was tied at 31 with 1:03 left. With no timeouts, took over at its own 16 with :58 remaining. In consecutive plays, Palmer hit Nelson for 19, and Fitzgerald for 18 & 20 to move to the CIN27. 15 CARDINALS 19, 49ERS 13 NOVMEBER 29, 2015 LEVI S STADIUM (70,799) In a typically tough, hard-nosed NFC West battle, the Cardinals recorded their first win in San Francisco since 2008 with a victory. It gave its 5th straight win and a 9-2 record that kept their division lead at 3 games with 5 to play. The 49ers entered the game at 3-7 but gave the Cards all they could handle. Arizona took a 6-0 lead after a pair of 1st half field goals from Chandler Catanzaro (26 & 41 yards). Each drive was set up by a Cardinals takeaway. The first came when Alani Fua recovered Bruce Ellington s muffed punt to give the Cards possession at the SF39 midway thru the first. had the ball inside the SF10 but referee Pete Morelli and his crew incorrectly administered a SF penalty causing the Cards to lose a down. The second takeaway came on the next series when FS Tyrann Mathieu intercepted a Blaine Gabbert pass and returned it to the SF42. Mathieu would finish the game with a career-high 13 tackles to go along with the INT. The 49ers halved that lead when Phil Dawson s 53-yard FG as the 1st half expired made it 6-3. On the 2nd play after intermission, Carson Palmer connected with John Brown on a 48-yard completion to the SF 23. continued downfield and would have 9 snaps inside the SF3 thanks to 4 defensive penalties, including 3 pass interference calls. The drive ended with Gabbert s 8-yard TD pass to TE Vance McDonald that made it a 3-point game. Late in the 3rd, Dawson s 33-yard FG would tie it at 13. With 10:25 left in the game, the Cards took over at their own 15 on what would be the game s pivotal drive. It began with a holding penalty that quickly backed up to the 8. A 9-yard Jermaine Gresham catch on 3rd-n-8 kept the drive alive but an unnecessary roughness call on soon led to a 3rd-n-19 at the 17. The Cards would pick it up thanks to a foul on the 49ers sideline for interference. then benefitted from a roughing the passer call against DT Quinton Dial on a Palmer sack. With 4:05 left, Palmer launched a 2nd-n-14 pass deep down the middle that rookie WR J.J. Nelson hauled in at the 1. After a run and a false start, the Cards faced 2nd-n-goal at the 8 when Palmer scrambled 8 yards for the go-ahead score. It was just the 8th rushing TD of his career and his first since The Cards led by just 6 with 2:28 remaining after the PAT hit the upright. The Niners would advance to the 30 with 1:30 to play but 2 incompletions and a Tony Jefferson sack led to a 4th-n-20 at the 40. With :13 left, the Vikings had moved into position for a 48-yard game-tying FG attempt and faced 3rd-n-10 at the 31. Five plays later, Palmer and WR John Brown connected on a 65-yard scoring play that put up Midway thru the 2nd quarter, MIN reached the 22 but at the end of a Jarius Wright reception, Deone Bucannon forced a fumble that he recovered himself at the 15. The Vikings would tie it at 10 in the closing seconds of the half on Blair Walsh s 44-yard FG. Minnesota opened the 3rd quarter by quickly moving to the 35 but the Cards responded with another big takeaway. DT Josh Mauro blew up Peterson as a reverse was developing, forcing a fumble that LB Alex Okafor recovered at the 43. On the ensuing drive, Palmer hit Floyd with a short pass that he turned into a 42-yard TD thanks to a key Larry Fitzgerald block along the sideline. The Cardinal lead grew to 10 on Catanzaro s 23-yard FG on the opening play of the 4th quarter. A 54-yard Walsh FG cut Minnesota s deficit to 7 and the Vikings then tied it with an 11-play, 88-yard drive that ended on a 7-yard Bridgewater pass to WR Mike Wallace. Now tied at 20, the Cards took over at their own 16 with 4:50 left. They moved to the MIN29 where Catanzaro s 47-yarder allowed to re-claim the lead with 1:23 left. The victory gave 12 wins overall and 7 on the road both single-season franchise records - while extending the team s win streak to 8 games. It also enabled the Cards to clinch their first NFC West title since 2009 and improved s 2015 record in primetime games to 5-0 (3-0 on Sunday Night Football). The Cards benefitted from 2 Philly turnovers but for the 4th straight game committed none themselves. The game was tied at 10 with 4:00 left in the first half when faced a 2ndn-5 at the PHI47. Johnson carried into the right side of the line, broke several tackles and then stiff-armed his way down the sideline for the go-ahead score. The Eagles responded by advancing deep into territory and seemed poised to tie the game going into the half. But on 4th-n-inches from the 8, CB Jerraud Powers knifed into the backfield and helped stop RB Ryan Mathews for no gain causing the Eagles to turn it over on downs. From there the momentum of the game shifted entirely in Arizona s favor. Johnson capped the Cards opening offensive series of the 2nd half with his 3rd TD of the night, a 1-yarder that came at the end of an 8-play, 87 yard drive. then forced turnovers on the next two Philly possessions. The first came when rookie LB Markus Golden sacked Sam Bradford forcing a fumble that DT Frostee Rucker recovered at the 44. A couple minutes later, S DJ Swearinger recovered a Mathews fumble caused by DT Josh Mauro. That takeaway was followed by Carson Palmer s 16-yard TD pass to John Brown that put up late in the 3rd quarter. On the opening play of the 4th quarter, $LB Deone Bucannon notched his first career INT when he picked off Bradford and returned it 39 yards for a TD that extended the lead to 27 points. The Eagles quickly trimmed it on the next play from scrimmage when Bradford took advantage of a defensive miscommunication and connected on a 78-yard TD to WR Jordan Matthews that made it Philly would get no closer and the game s final points came via a 38-yard Chandler Catanzaro with 2:59 left. Two plays later with the contest well in hand, the Cards were dealt a crushing blow when S Tyrann Mathieu suffered a season-ending knee injury after intercepting Bradford. 17 CARDINALS 38, PACKERS 8 DECEMBER 27, 2015 UNIV. OF PHOENIX STADIUM (64,878) A week after clinching the division with a dominating 23-point win at Philly, the Cards returned home to face the 10-4 Packers with a chance to secure a 1st round bye for the first time in franchise history. The result was an even more decisive Arizona victory. Despite having 8 fewer offensive plays, the Cards outgained GB by 203 yards and scored 38 points against the NFL s #5 team in points allowed. Playing on his 36th birthday, Carson Palmer completed 2nd quarter TD passes to WRs Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown. They were followed by a 14-yard scoring run from do-everything rookie RB David Johnson, his 13th TD of the year. That staked to a 17-0 lead early in the 3rd. After that, a pair of 3rd quarter Green Bay drives ended with Cardinal sacks of Aaron Rodgers that caused fumbles they returned for TDs. The first came when LB Kareem Martin forced Rodgers to lose the ball and DT Cory Redding took the recovery 36 yards for a TD. Later in the quarter, Dwight Freeney forced it from Rodgers on a sack and CB Jerraud Powers took the fumble 7 yards for another defensive TD. In all, the Cards recorded 9 sacks (their most since 1986) including 3.0 from Freeney and 2.5 by DT Calais Campbell. Rodgers was sacked a career-high 8 times before giving way to back-up Scott Tolzien. The game was close early on and scoreless after one quarter. But on the 3rd play of the 2nd quarter, Palmer hit Fitzgerald with a TD pass on 3rd-n-goal from the 3 to make it 7-0. The next Cardinals drive reached the GB1 but they couldn t punch it in and had to settle for a Chandler Catanzaro FG. Up 10-0, the Cards took over at their own 24 with 2:00 to go in the 1st half. But on the 1st play, Palmer s screen pass was picked off by DT Mike Daniels who set the Packers up at the 15. It was Arizona s 1st turnover in five games. Two plays later GB faced a 3rd-n-5 at the 10. A TD or FG would make it a one score game and the Packers would get the ball 1st after intermission. However, Rodgers pass intended for WR James Jones was INT d by CB Justin Bethel in the end zone. That gave the possession at its own 20 with :57 left. On the 1st play, the game s leading receiver Michael Floyd (6-111) took a Palmer pass 47 yards to the 9. With :11 left, the Cards faced a 3rd-n-goal at the 7 when Palmer hit Brown with a TD to make it 17-0 at the half. For, the 2nd half began just as favorably as the 1st half had ended. On the 3rd quarter s opening play from scrimmage, RB James Starks fumbled on a hit by S D.J. Swearinger and Powers recovered at the GB28. A 14-yard Floyd reception on the 1st play took it to the 14 and on the next snap, Johnson ran 14 yards off right tackle for a TD that gave a 24-0 lead. Green Bay s lone score came on an Eddie Lacy reception late in the 3rd. OF PHOENIX STADIUM (64,546) The Cardinals entered the regular season finale vs. Seattle with a 13-2 record having already clinched the #2 seed and a first-round bye. A home win over the Seahawks combined with a Carolina home loss to Tampa would elevate Arizona to the #1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. Neither outcome happened. The Cards would suffer just their 3rd defeat of the season and by far their most decisive. Seattle scored on each of its first 5 possessions (4 TDs & a FG) and led 30-6 at halftime. The Cardinals struggled in all three phases, surrendering their highest point total on defense and producing their lowest on offense. On special teams Seattle return man Tyler Lockett gained 139 yards on 4 punt returns and had consecutive returns of 66 & 42 that each led to TDs. The defeat snapped Arizona s win streak at 9 games, one shy of the franchise record (1948). Seattle opened the game s scoring with a 12-play, 88-yard TD drive on its first offensive series. RB Christian Michael s 44-yard run provided half of the drive s yardage and Bryce Brown s 1-yard TD run made it 7-0. An INT by Jeremy Lane on the 2nd play of the next series set the Seahawks up at the 41 and led to a 52-yard Steven Hauschka FG that made it Arizona answered when Carson Palmer s 17-yard pass to Larry Fitzgerald at the end of a 12-play, 80-yard drive made it 10-6 after Chandler Catanzaro s PAT was wide right. After a 7-yard Russell Wilson TD pass to FB Will Tukuafu on the next drive, the Seahawks led Lockett then returned a punt 66 yards to the 16 and it led immediately to another Wilson TD pass, this one an 8-yarder to TE Chase Coffman. A Cards 3-n-out was followed by a 42-yard Lockett punt return that set Seattle up at the 27. Three plays later, Wilson connected with Doug Baldwin on 24-yard TD that made it 30-6 at the half. Palmer was kept from action in the 2nd half and gave way to back-up Drew Stanton. Wilson would stay in the game for another quarter before being replaced by Tarvaris Jackson early in the fourth. The game s only other scoring came via two Hauschka FGs of 33 and 52 yards. Several Cardinals reached personal milestones in the game. Fitzgerald recorded 6 catches to eclipse his own franchise single-season record (103 in 2005) and finished the year with 108. Palmer set the club s singleseason mark in that category (Neil Lomax in 1984) and he also finished with the highest passer rating ever for a Cards QB at (Kurt Warner, 2008). John Brown eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in a season for the first time in his career and the Cards offense finished the year ranked #1 in the NFL for the first time since The defense finished 2015 ranked #5. 18 NFC DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF CARDINALS 26, PACKERS 20 (0T) JANUARY 16, 2016 UNIV. OF PHOENIX STADIUM (65,089) Meeting in the Divisional Playoff round, the Cards and Pack turned in one for the ages. The wild game featured 23 total points in the first 56:15 and then 23 more in the final 4:49. It saw the Cards come back from a 4th quarter deficit to lead late before the Packers completed a 41-yard Hail Mary as time expired to force overtime. But in the end, as it so often does, the game was decided by all-pro WR Larry Fitzgerald who cemented his place among the game s greatest postseason players. He caught 8 passes for a club playoff record 176 yards and a TD. His biggest plays came when needed it most, including a 75-yard catch-n-run on the 1st play of OT after Aaron Rodgers had delivered a gut punch at the end of regulation. The Cardinals struck first when Michael Floyd s toe-tapping catch of a Carson Palmer pass in the back of the end zone gave them a 7-0 lead. A 100-yard INT return TD by CB Patrick Peterson would have given the Cards a 14-0 lead but it was negated by penalty. Green Bay would then dominate possession thanks to back-toback 17-play drives that consumed more than 15 minutes in total. However, each ended in FGs rather than TDs and led 7-6 at intermission. The teams then opened the 3rd quarter by trading interceptions. First S Rashad Johnson picked off Rodgers but 3 plays later Ha Ha Clinton-Dix returned the favor with one off Palmer. RB Eddie Lacy then reeled off consecutive runs of 14 & 61 yards that set-up an 8-yard TD pass to WR Jeff Janis. With the Pack leading 13-7, marched to the GB10 but had to settle for a 28-yard Chandler Catanzaro FG that cut it to 3. The next Cards drive also reached the 10 but Palmer s pass to John Brown in the end zone was picked by CB Damarious Randall. After another Pack punt, the Cards took over at their own 20 down 3 with 10:53 to go. In 13 plays they reached the GB9 when Palmer s pass into the end zone was deflected by Randall but ricocheted to Floyd for a TD. After the Packers turned it over on downs on 4 passes, took over at the GB24 with 2:38 to go. Catanzaro s subsequent 36-yard FG made it with 1:55 to play. Needing a TD to tie it, GB faced a 4th-n-20 from its own 4 when Rodgers completed a 60-yard deep ball to Janis that took it to the 36 with :21 left. Three plays later they faced a 2nd-n-15 from the 41 and time for one heave into the end zone. GB s prayers were answered when Janis came down with Rodgers pass in the end zone with no time on the clock and the stadium stunned. The crazy ending got crazier when referee Clete Blakeman had to re-do the OT coin toss because it didn t flip on his first try. ultimately won it and started the extra period at its own 20. On the first snap, Palmer spun away from pressure before firing across the field to a wide open Fitzgerald. The veteran WR proceeded to weave his way all the way to the GB 5 on a 75-yard gain. Two plays later, a shovel pass to Fitz ended it. NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PANTHERS 49, CARDINALS 15 JANUARY 24, 2016 BANK OF AMERICA STADIUM (74,294) The NFC Championship Game featured the conference s top 2 seeds and league s top 2 offenses as the Cards (13-3) & Panthers (15-1) met in Charlotte with the dream of playing in Super Bowl 50. The dream quickly turned into a nightmare for Arizona. The Panthers scored on their first 3 offensive drives of each half and led 17-0 after one quarter, 24-7 at the half and ultimately won They forced 7 Cardinal turnovers (4 INTs/3 fumbles) including 3 very costly ones late in the 2nd quarter when the Cards had a chance to re-claim momentum. It marked the 2nd straight year the Cards season ended in Carolina and the loss denied Arizona the chance to advance to its 2nd Super Bowl in franchise history. After a 45-yard Graham Gano FG put Carolina up 3-0, the next Panther drive started at the 49 thanks to a 32-yard Ted Ginn punt return. Five plays later, Ginn scored from 22 yards out on a reverse to make it Arizona s 3rd straight drive ended in a punt but the defense had a chance to send the Panthers 3-n-out with a stop on 3rd-n-8 from the CAR14. However, Newton hit Corey Brown with a 26-yard pass to the 40 and the WR broke one tackle to take it the rest of the way for an 86-yard score. Down 17-0 the Cards advanced to the CAR37. On 3rd-n-10, Carson Palmer was sacked by DT Kawann Short forcing a fumble that the Panthers recovered. After the defense forced a 3-n-out, the Cards took over at their own 21 with 11:47 to play in the half. They would move 79 yards in 10 plays and David Johnson s 1-yard TD run made it then held Carolina without a 1st down and the ensuing punt was short. But as Patrick Peterson raced to catch the errant kick, he couldn t hold onto it and the Panthers recovered at the 46. Consecutive runs of 17 and 23 by RB Jonathan Stewart took it to the one and on 3rd-n-goal from there Newton was able to break the plane for a TD. On the next snap, Palmer s arm was hit by DE Charles Johnson forcing a fumble the Panthers recovered at the 31. Two plays later, though, Peterson INT d Newton and returned it 72 yards to the 22 with :56 left. But on the very next play, Palmer s pass into the end zone was picked off by S Kurt Coleman allowing the Panthers to take a 24-7 lead into halftime. Things got no better in the 2nd half for the Cards as another Gano FG and an 11-yard Newton run upped the lead to Early in the 4th, Palmer s 21-yard TD pass to TE Darren Fells and a successful 2-point conversion made it with 14:16 remaining.
