11 2007 GAME SUMMARIES San Diego Chargers 14, Chicago Bears 3 Sunday, September 9, Qualcomm Stadium (San Diego, CA) The Chargers opened the 2007 season with a hard-fought 14-3 win over the Chicago Bears in Norv Turner s head coaching debut in San Diego for most of three quarters, the game was a slugfest with Chicago holding on to a 3-0 advantage untimely penalties, turnovers and dropped passes prevented the Chargers from getting on the scoreboard until they caught a break late in the third quarter when a Mike Scifres punt took an errant bounce and hit a Bears player Matt Wilhelm recovered the football and the Bolts were in business as four plays later LaDainian Tomlinson took a handoff from Philip Rivers and on a halfback option play threw a perfect spiral to Antonio Gates who scored from 17 yards out to give the Chargers a 7-3 lead then six plays later on Chicago s next drive, linebacker Stephen Cooper hit Bears running back Adrian Peterson after a two yard gain and in the process he stripped the ball from the Peterson the fumble was recovered by Clinton Hart and it gave the Bolts great field position at their own 44-yard line eight plays and 56 yards later, Tomlinson capped the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run and the Bolts would hold on for the 14-3 victory. 29 2007 AFC Championship Game New England Patriots 21, San Diego Chargers 12 Sunday, January 20, Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, MA) The Chargers magical run through the postseason came to an abrupt end following a loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game at Foxborough, Massachusetts despite playing with a torn ACL in his right knee, Philip Rivers started and played the entire game the contest was played in subfreezing weather with a kickoff temperature of 23 degrees and a wind-chill factor of nine degrees the Chargers were doomed by their inability to score touchdowns inside the red zone, instead settling for four Nate Kaeding field goals NFL rushing champion LaDainian Tomlinson, who was suffering from a strained MCL in his left knee, tried to go, but was unable to complete the game the teams traded possessions early in the contest and the Chargers struck first with a 26-yard Kaeding field goal following a Tom Brady interception the Patriots answered right back though with a touchdown run by Laurence Maroney, but another Kaeding field goal trimmed the lead to 7-6 the Chargers were also hurt by turnovers as a second-quarter interception thrown by Rivers resulted in another TD and a 14-6 lead for the Pats the Chargers added a late second-quarter San Diego Chargers New England Patriots Chargers 1 2:55 N.Kaeding 26 yd.
