C-USA Semifinals Head Coach University of Memphis 25-8 WNIT Second Round, C-USA Semifinals Head Coach University of Memphis WNIT First Round 173 ppg average That was a third post-season honor for Dickson, who was a second team all-conference honoree in 2012 and an all-freshman team member in 2010 Hearn was the next Tiger to earn all-freshman team honors in 2013, after leading Memphis with 109 assists on the season, becoming the first freshman at Memphis since to dish out 100 or more assists in a single season The Tigers were also recognized for their work in the classroom, as Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir was voted to the C-USA All- Academic Team in 2013 For her work rebuilding the Tigers and getting the program back into the postseason, McFerrin was awarded a contract extension that will keep her at the helm of the program through But a new challenge awaits McFerrin and her Tigers team beginning with the season, as the university becomes a member of the American Athletic Conference, joining one of the elite college women s basketball conferences in the country On July 1, 2013, the Tigers will join Cincinnati, Connecticut, Houston, Louisville, Rutgers, SMU, Temple, UCF and USF in The American Connecticut and Louisville appeared in the NCAA Championship game last season and will both visit the Bluff City to face the Tigers in Heading into the new American Athletic Conference, we ll be familiar with some of those teams, McFerrin said We ll be familiar with Houston, SMU and UCF You do have more opportunities to build an RPI when you are playing teams like UConn and Louisville two times a season, and we are already recruiting players in some of those same areas that The American is in Part of our current team already hails from Ohio, where we ll return to play Cincinnati each year, and we re also recruiting from markets like Chicago and Washington, DC g o Tigersg o c o m The University of Memphis

country to play multiple home games in an NBA venue In the summer of 2011, Memphis also took its game out to an international scale, playing four games over a 10-day stretch during a tour of Italy Off the court, the Tigers continue to help their student-athletes grow, actively participating with Girls, Incorporated of Memphis and on various community service projects, including the construction of an all-abilities playground, participating in breast cancer awareness and arthritis awareness walks, distributing shoes to children in need, making visits to Memphis-area children s hospitals and talking to various schools and youth groups about the challenges of making healthy choices Year-By-Year With Melissa McFerrin Working in conjunction with the Center for Athletic Academic Services, McFerrin has watched 14 Tigers have crossed the stage in her first five years with a college diploma in hand McFerrin has also sent some of her first Tigers into the realm of a professional basketball career, as Brittany Carter spent the 2013 season in Israel Former teammates Alex Winchell and Paris Leonard also played some professional level ball overseas Winchell recently returned to Memphis to begin her coaching career, currently serving as the assistant coach at Christian Brothers University Prior to her hire at Memphis in 2008, McFerrin was named the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year in her fourth season at American University in Washington DC Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an overall record That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since with a WNIT bid In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors Before her stint with American, McFerrin was an 6 A s s i s t a n t C o a c h E r i n G r a n t Grant at a Glance BORN June 13 Hometown - Arlington, Texas ALMA MATER Texas Tech, History Records Review Players Coaching Staff Media Erin Grant, a four-year letterwinner at Texas Tech from , joined the University of Memphis women s basketball coaching staff in May of 2012 The former point guard still holds the Texas Tech and Big 12 Conference career assists record (844) and oversees the development of the Tigers perimeter players Erin brings a wealth of knowledge and very high-level experiences to the University of Memphis, head coach Melissa McFerrin said As an elite level point guard at Texas Tech and in the WNBA, she understands the game from the players perspective She played for an outstanding high school coach and for a Hall of Fame coach in Marsha Sharp at Texas Tech She acquired her knowledge of the game from some of the game s very best Texas Tech, 2006 Second Season She has high-level recruiting and coaching experience from her time in Texas and New Mexico and is a dynamic, charismatic and confident personality She really is the complete package and will be a great addition to our staff In her first season at Memphis, Grant helped develop freshman point guard Ariel Hearn into a C-USA All-Freshman team honoree Hearn led Memphis with 109 assists in her first collegiate season, becoming the first Tiger freshman since to dish out 100 or more assists in a season Grant came to Memphis after spending one season as an assistant coach at New Mexico, where she helped the Lobos make a run to the Mountain West Conference (MWC) Tournament championship game As a guards coach at New Mexico, Grant helped junior Caroline Durbin to her first career All-MWC first team honor, after the guard led the league in three-point field goal percentage I am thrilled to be joining Coach Melissa McFerrin and the Memphis Tiger family, Grant said It is a tremendous opportunity to work with this progressive staff and team I look forward to continued success for our Memphis basketball program Prior to her one-year stint with New Mexico, Grant was an assistant coach for four seasons at Texas-Arlington, where she helped the Mavericks to the program s second WNIT appearance in 2009 while working primarily with the guards and assisting in recruiting and film breakdown That UT-Arlington team defeated Memphis in the Fun in the Sun Shootout in the Bahamas, and eventually finished the year with a overall mark Before joining the coaching ranks, Grant was a standout point guard at Texas Tech She played for legendary coach Marsha Sharp, helping the Red Raiders compile a mark of in her four seasons She was a three-time All-Big 12 Conference honoree, including first team accolades in 2005 and 2006 Grant was also a three-time Big 12 All-Academic first team selection and was the Big 12 co-freshman of the Year in 2003 when her 228 assists led the league and became the freshman single-season assists record Three of her seasons at Texas Tech remain in the Big 12 record book Her 228 assists in her freshman season rank third in the Big 12 single-season record book and her 330 assist-to-turnover ratio from her junior season is still a Big 12 single-season mark As a freshman, she helped Texas Tech to the NCAA Elite Eight and played in the 2003 World University Games for Team USA She also represented Team USA in the 2005 World University Games, winning a gold medal As a senior in 2006, Grant was a Kodak/WBCA All-America finalist and an Associated Press (AP) All- America honorable mention selection She played PLAYING HIGHLIGHTS Holds the Big 12 conference and Texas Tech record for career assists (844) Played under legendary coach Marsha Sharp Named to All-Big 12 team first team two times and second team once Three-time Big-12 All-Academic team honoree Co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2003 Selected to play in the 2006 WBCA All-Star Challenge Kodak/WBCA All-American finalist in 2006 Played for USA Basketball in 2003 and 2005 at the World University Games Guided the 2005 USA Basketball Squad to a gold medal at the World University Games Candidate for the Naismith Trophy 2006 WNBA Draft pick by the Seattle Storm Played for Stockholm 08 in the Swedish League, earning tournament MVP honors Also played for the WNBA Houston Comets in 2007 COACHING HIGHLIGHTS Guided freshman point guard Ariel Hearn to all-c-usa Freshman team honors in 2013 Under Grant s guidance, Hearn became the first Memphis freshman since 1983 to dish out more than 100 assists in a single season Has helped two different teams to a WNIT post-season bid (Memphis, 2013; UT Arlington, 2009) COACHING EXPERIENCE Assistant Coach: UT Arlington, Assistant Coach: New Mexico, Assistant Coach: University of Memphis, 2012-present in the WBCA All-Star Challenge following her senior campaign and was the 39th overall pick in 2006 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm She also played overseas, helping the Stockholm 08 team to the Swedish Championship and earning the championship s MVP award Grant completed the 2006 season with the WNBA Houston Comets before beginning her coaching career with UT-Arlington in the season A native of Arlington, Texas, Grant graduated from Mansfield High School, where she played her prep basketball under head coach Samantha Morrow from When Morrow was hired as the UT-Arlington head coach in the spring of 2007, she added Grant to her staff following the conclusion of Grant s WNBA career later that same year At Mansfield, Grant led the Tigers to an unprecedented four consecutive state championships, and when she graduated, she was the only girls basketball player in Texas high school basketball history to win four-straight class 5A state championships A McDonald s All-American, she posted 1,055 career assists in her prep career g o Tigersg o c o m The University of Memphis

8 History Records Review Players Coaching Staff Media Director of Basketball Operations D o n e a s e S m i t h Central Missouri State, 1998 Fifth Season Donease Smith joined the Memphis women s basketball staff as the Director of Basketball Operations in June of 2009 The former director of basketball of operations for the WNBA Detroit Shock, Smith takes care of both internal and external needs of the entire women s basketball team, including team travel, practice set up and inventory control We re very fortunate to have someone like Donease in our program at the University of Memphis Her national level collegiate experiences along with her WNBA experiences make her a good fit for our program, Melissa McFerrin said Smith spent the past two seasons with the Detroit Shock in the WNBA, serving as the basketball operations manager and as the manager of the Year Round Hoops program Prior to her WNBA stint, Smith had developed a long history of coaching and teaching basketball Following her playing career ( ) at Central Missouri State (now called the University of Central Missouri), Smith taught introductory business classes and served as an assistant girls basketball coach for four years in Kansas City, Mo She then spent the and the seasons as an assistant coach for the Kansas City Legacy of the National Women s Basketball League (NWBL) There, she assisted in all phases of coaching and training, as well as assisting in team travel, scheduling and community outreach programs She also served as an AAU coach for the Kansas City Chicks and as a USSSA coach for the Kansas City Blue during those two seasons Smith then joined the staff at Kansas State as the director of basketball operations She spent one season at K-State before serving as a business instructor and team in September of 2012 as the program s video coordinator He is responsible for the Tigers tape exchange program, cutting practice and game film and assisting the coaching staff with various video needs A 2006 graduate of the University of Illinois, Kantor spent working with the Illini as a men s practice player before his graduation He then joined the Illini staff in as a volunteer video coordinator, using XOS to compile scouting reports and personnel clips In 2007, he joined the staff at SMU as the video coordinator He was in charge of creating scouting reports and personnel clips for the Mustangs and was a member of the Mustangs staff until 2010 when he spent the season as an assistant coach at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY At Colgate, he again oversaw the scouting and film exchange program, and also worked with he guards and posts in the Colgate offense In addition to recruiting, he also served as the Lady Raiders academic coach Kantor returned to Texas for the season to serve as the assistant coach at Houston Baptist University before joining the Tigers staff in September Strength and Conditioning M i k e J e n k i n s Texas A&M, 1990 Sixth Season Mike Jenkins joined the Tiger Strength & Conditioning staff in July of 2008 He is responsible for the strength and conditioning training of the volleyball, women s basketball, softball, tennis, golf and women s soccer programs Jenkins is no stranger to Memphis, having spent the past three seasons as an athletic trainer/strength coach at D1SportsTraining in Cordova There, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility and for facilitating the D1 training programs and techniques, managing facility personnel and directing special events and marketing A 1990 graduate of Texas A&M, Jenkins worked as a graduate assistant and then a restricted earning assistant in the Aggies strength and conditioning department from He then served as the Support Staff head strength coach at Weber State University from , where he implemented the speed and strength programs for WSU s 13 sports programs Jenkins left Weber State in 1998, joining the strength and conditioning staff at Marshall from
