State Police: use caution, slow down when approaching emergency vehicle Two Indiana State Troopers are recovering from minor injuries after being struck along the interstate while inside their police cars within the last two days. Both officers were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Indiana law requires motorist upon approaching a stationary authorized emergency vehicle, when the authorized emergency vehicle is giving a signal by displaying alternately flashing red, red and white, or red and blue lights; proceed with due caution, yield the right-ofway by making a lane change into a lane not adjacent to that of the authorized emergency vehicle, if possible with due regard to safety and traffic conditions, if on a highway having at least four lanes with not less than two lanes proceeding in the same direction as the approaching vehicle; or proceed with due caution, reduce the speed of the vehicle to a speed at least ten (10) miles per hour less than the posted speed limit, maintaining a safe speed for road conditions, if changing lanes would be impossible or unsafe. The State Police would like to remind motorists of the following safety tips when approaching an emergency vehicle along the road: As soon as you see the flashing emergency lights you should immediately begin reducing your speed as well as increase the following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. By reducing speed and increasing following distance you substantially increase your ability to safely react to the emergency vehicle or other hazards that may suddenly present themselves. If possible, move to the next lane away from the emergency vehicle. This provides a safe barrier for the emergency worker and also allows traffic coming behind you to clearly see the emergency vehicle on the side of the road so they can begin to take appropriate action. If you re unable to safely change lanes, reduce your speed at least 10 miles per hour under the posted speed limit and move as far away as possible, within your lane, from the emergency vehicle. According to Indiana statute, emergency vehicles include: Firetrucks, Ambulances, Tow Trucks, Highway Maintenance Vehicles, Utility Service Vehicles, Police Cars, Roadside Service Vehicles and Garbage Trucks

Roaten Glidden Royals take care of Lawrence Central By RICHIE HALL Reporter Sports Editor It seems that the Hamilton Southeastern boys basketball team is setting a new standard with every game this season. Before Friday's home game with Lawrence Central, the Royals honored their senior star Zach Gunn, who broke the school's rebounding record last week while leading HSE to a championship at the Huntington North tournament. After that, Southeastern added another victory to its ledger, beating the Bears The Royals, who are ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, are now 11-1 for the season and riding an eight-game winning streak. This is the first time HSE has won eight straight since it opened the 2013 season by winning its first eight games. It also marked the 250th career victory for Brian Satterfield, who is in his 16th season as Royals head coach. Southeastern jumped out to a lead once the first quarter was finished. Gunn scored nine points, and Austin Holzum threw up an off-balance 3-point shot at the buzzer, which went in. "I thought that was huge," said Satterfield. Lawrence Central played the Royals close for most of the game, but Southeastern was always able to stay anywhere from six to 11 points ahead, then got up by in the fourth quarter. Free throw shooting was a big factor - the Royals were 23-of-27 overall, including 5-of-5 in the second period and 7-of-8 in the third. Satterfield said his team took care of the basketball during its second-half run, but then ran into a dry patch where he estimated that HSE "probably went three out of the next five possessions where we had turnovers," which allowed the Bears to get within striking distance. "But to our credit, we took care of business when we needed to," said Satterfield, who said his team kept attacking the basket, getting to the foul line and making those important free throws. Gunn led the way with 18 points, while Jack Davidson scored 17, including a 9-of-9 effort from the line. Noah Smith scored 17 points as well. Gunn grabbed seven rebounds, while Smith had five. Davidson handed out four assists. "Everyone's playing good," said Gunn. "A lot of guys are stepping up. Tonight some guys played really well. I think we had three guys with 15-plus." Gunn's rebounding at the Huntington North tourney sent him past a record that had stood for 40 years - the old recordholder was Larry Raymer, a 1977 HSE graduate. And now that Gunn, a senior, has the record, he plans to keep going" and add to his new mark. After Friday's game, Gunn sits at 674 career rebounds. The Royals will be back in action tonight, traveling to Warren Central. The Warriors are 8-0 for the season, and receiving votes in the Class 4A poll. 6 6 Sports Golden Eagles beat Chatard, even CCC record Guerin Catholic improved to 7-5 on the season with a victory over Circle City Conference rival Bishop Chatard Friday night before another large Friday night crowd at the Eagles Nest. The Golden Eagles led from start to finish. Coach Pete Smith's squad led early in the fourth quarter before Chatard got the 19-point deficit down to single digits by the final horn. Nine of the 11 GC players who saw action scored. Junior Jack Hansen continued his solid play and posted gamehigh totals of 28 points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots. The team held a commanding rebounding advantage to help negate a poor 2-9 shooting performance from 3-point range along with, in Smith's words, "getting beat to the balls." "Chatard's kids played with a little bit more energy, and we had a few guys just have rough nights offensively" said Smith. "We executed decently on offense, but we only had 11 assists while having 11 turnovers. That's not like us the past five games. I did really like how Jack (Hansen) finished around the basket. Heck, he had our only two 3-pt. field goals, too." Matthew Godfrey scored eight points, while Will Morris and Zach Munson grabbed five rebounds to support the efforts of Hansen. Earlier in the week Hansen was named the IBCA/Subway Player of the Week in Central Indiana for his play in the team's holiday tournament in Vincennes. The Golden Eagles have won five of their last six contests, and the victory evened their CCC record to 2-2.
