3 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES Across the Desk Red Onion Creative Ballarat FNL Operations Manager Aaron Nunn The Biggest Day of ALL! Welcome once again to the Ballarat FNL s One day in September, and I am sure we are again in for a fantastic day of high class football & netball. Well done to all sides who have made the Grand Final in each of the respective football and netball grades, and good luck to all players & Coaches as you chase the ultimate prize. Well done also to those Umpires who have been appointed to today s fixtures, and obviously their selection is a reward for great performances throughout the year, and best wishes for a great game to all Umpires. Today promises to be a very keenly attended and anticipated Grand Final between 2 of BFNL s most professional clubs, with the Sunbury FC chasing back-to-back premierships, and extraordinarily their 6th Ballarat FL premierships since entering the competition back in The North Ballarat City FC are appearing in their 1st Grand Final since re-entry back into the Ballarat FNL. Today s Senior Football Grand Final will be played off between the two best sides in the competition so strap yourself in for another classic BFNL Grand Final. Over at the netball court, the BFNL Senior Netball competition has seen a changing of the guard with former powerhouse clubs Lake Wendouree and Redan bowing out of the finals race early making way for today s Grand Finalists Sunbury and North Ballarat City. Both clubs need to be congratulated for their efforts this season and their ability to turn their fortunes around as it was only 12 months ago that both sides finished their seasons prior to September action even beginning. Both sides have developed an excellent rivalry this season and this match is sure to be another cracker. The spread of clubs on Grand Final day this year is testament to the evenness of our competition. Today eight of our eleven clubs will be represented in at least one football and/or netball Grand Final which is great for our competition. Junior Wrap The Ballarat FNL has again seen some great finals crowds in 2013, with the remarkable growth in attendances of the 2012 Junior Finals maintained across a superb 2013 Junior Finals series and a brilliant crowd at last Sundays Ballarat FNL Junior Grand Final. It was very pleasing to see eight of our nine Junior Clubs featuring in Junior Football and Netball Grand Finals, and such a good representation of clubs just underlines how healthy our Junior competition is. The BFNL Junior competition continues to improve every year and it is a credit to all involved at all clubs that they continue to make the effort to take their club forward. The 2013 season was an historic season for the Ballarat FNL Junior competition with the introduction of our another three Junior netball competitions to add to the three introduced last season. It has been such a resounding success that the competition will continue to grow in years to come. Thanks to all Junior Coordinators, Coaches, Trainers, Volunteers in all capacities, Mums & Dads, etc for all your contributions to helping us get the champs of tomorrow onto the ground and courts every weekend. The Ballarat FL Youth Girls competition grew from 7 sides in 2012 to 10 sides in 2013 with the inclusion of Ararat JFA, Darley JFC and Gisborne JFC. Congratulations to the Redan JFC who won a high class Youth Girls Grand Final at the Eastern Oval last month in front of a big crowd. In further exciting news, the competition is expected to grow to possibly 11 or 12 sides in 2014 which is wonderful for the clubs and players involved. Another highlight was the amazing continued growth of the Robbie Allan Medal and in 2013 our Junior Football Presentation Night at the Mercure Ballarat saw a staggering crowd of 650 people attend Junior Football s night of nights! What an amazing night it was! Unfortunately the girls were unable to repeat their victory against the Geelong JFL as part of the Bob Davis Trophy. Exhibition Match for the BFL U16 representative side V s AFL Cairns at the City Oval. For this first time this year, the BFNL in conjunction with the RDFL and MCDFL took a squad of 24 players to Cairns and Townsville to play in two exhibition matches. The success of the trip has seen all three leagues commit to the trip for a further three years. A great win by the Ballarat FL Under 18 Representative Game V s RDFL at the Eastern Oval under lights. A great win by our Senior Football Interleague side over the Bendigo FL at the Eastern Oval in May will see us elevated to the next level to play the Goulburn Valley FL in The selection of Ryan Waight and Derrick Micallef in the AFL Victoria Country state representative side that played the VAFA in July, and also to Sunbury FC s Greg Hay who was also selected in the AFL Victoria Country Under 19 side that also played the VAFA in Another great trading performance of our social club The Ballarat Leagues Club, which provided unprecedented assistance to the Ballarat FNL Clubs in 2013 in which we will covered all Club umpiring costs in addition to the fantastic support already provided, along with a dramatic increase of funds available for Club Development Grants. 5 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES Message from the Chairman Red Onion Creative Ballarat FNL Chairman Gary Wickham ON behalf of the board of the Ballarat Football & Netball League I would like to extend a warm welcome to all supporters, Guests and participants to the 2013 Red Onion Creative Grand Final. The year started in great fashion with our season launch at Bacchus Marsh s Maddingley Park, where we heard some fantastic words from Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell and his teammate Dale Thomas which was very exciting. The launch was well attended by sponsors and clubs, and we must thank Telstra Countrywide and the Bacchus Marsh FNC for their support of the event. The opening of our season started without any concerns with all grounds being available, not like past years when we have relied on school grounds to start the season or many changes of grounds for our seniors. Today we celebrate the end of another great season with some fantastic achievements: - Monday night we saw Jake Edwards become the second Darley player to win the Henderson Medal - Dan Jordan won the Johnnie Walker Tony Lockett leading goal kicking award for the fifth time after his 110 goal home and away season. - Melton s Brooke Thompson won her second successive A Grade netball best & fairest - Justin Davey took out the Umpire of the Year award. This year we hosted the Bendigo Football Netball League in the Worksafe AFL Victoria Country Championships which was a fantastic success with a great crowd and wins to both our Senior football and netball sides. This moves us back to where we belong inside the top four leagues in the state, and we ll take on the Goulburn Valley FNL next year for the chance to play off for the state title in Our Juniors also had a very big interleague campaign playing the Geelong and Bendigo Football Leagues with more junior footballers representing their league than ever before. Our footballers and netballers again did our league proud in the professional way that they responded to all that was asked of them by the league and the coaching staff. We thank them all for their commitment over the six week interleague program. Thanks goes out to all the interleague coach s, support staff and parents that assisted the league during these carnivals. The financial aspect of the year has again been successful with both the BFL and the Ballarat Leagues Club continuing to operate profitably and returning much needed sponsorship back into the community. This year we held a another very successful Women Making a Mark Tribute Luncheon at the Ballarat Leagues Club to recognise the important role women play in our football and netball community, which was again well supported by the BFNL senior and junior clubs. Our Youth Girls football competition took another huge step forward this season, with another three teams joining to take the competition to ten teams, and numerous BFNL Youth Girls players experiencing higher honours, including Golden Point star Jenna Bruton who played with the Western Bulldogs in the first ever AFL Women s match. To Rod, Aaron, Toby, Liam, Scott, Shaun, Kara and Matthew, thank you for your continued dedication to the league. A welcome to Shaun and Kara who have come on board this season to add much needed resources to our administration, which is by far and away the best in country Victorian football. To my fellow board members thank you for your hard work and long hours to help make this league the premier league that we are. To Red Onion Creative and all of the league sponsors we thank you for your continued support, we hope that you have enjoyed your journey with us this year. Good Luck to all teams competing in the finals today and we look forward to seeing everyone again in season BFNL RECORD

9 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES BFNL Preliminary Final Review - Football Pat Nolan - reprinted with thanks to The Courier NORTH Ballarat City is through to its first ever Ballarat Football League grand final after a systematic preliminary final dismantling of Redan on Saturday. In a ruthless display at Eastern Oval, North saw off an initial Redan barrage before launching an unrelenting attack on the side that it lost to by 41 points just two weeks ago, winning (133) to 9.9 (63). Superior contested football, supreme ball movement and sheer intensity were highlights of the black and white machine that the Lions simply had no answer to. Shaun Lyle was simply unstoppable in the forward arc with nine goals and four behinds, while fellow key forward Michael Williams also chipped in with five majors. Coach Rob Waters said the 111-point turnaround from the qualifying final came down to one key thing contested footy. Two weeks ago, North players were run off their feet, dominated in the clinches by a more ferocious maroon and gold outfit. On Saturday the tables were completely turned. That s where they smashed us last time and that s where we needed to beat them to turn it around, Waters said. Last time we got poleaxed and they beat us by 41 points. We had four blokes off and two carrying injuries then. We think we re a pretty good team and we proved it today and came out and won against a quality footy team. The two first goals of the match went the way of Redan, the second of which was a contender for goal of the year by Dean Matthews after blind turning his way out of a pack and taking on about five North players to somehow find himself in space. The maroon and gold were on top across the ground, North entering its forward 50 just three times in the first 18 minutes. But then something changed. A Jayden Orr goal spurred North to life and from that point onwards it as all one-way traffic. Fourteen of the next 15 goals went the way of the Northies, with Redan barely in the contest. Everything was going the way of North Ballarat City. Big man Williams was snapping goals on the run at one end while Ryan Hobbs was impassable down back. Josh McDermott justified his call-up to replace Tristan Cartledge in the ruck in a sensational performance, while the ground troops of Tyler and Ayden George and Jason McNamara were dominant as usual. Redan s Matt Caris had the chance to give his side a much-needed lift with a shot after the half-time siren, but when it landed short from 45 metres, it was difficult to see the Lions working their way back into it. And when Williams goaled 20 seconds into the third term, any hopes of a Redan comeback faded quickly. Lyle kicked three goals in the third term to take his tally to seven at the last break, slotting a further two in the last quarter. Redan coach Eammon Gill was left somewhat speechless after the game. They completely dominated us on the ball, they dismantled our backline and we had no answer, he said. It just proves that two weeks is a very long time in footy. It just shows that if you re not on your game, then you re going to get blown away. BFNL Preliminary Final Review - Netball Pat Nolan - reprinted with thanks to The Courier THE North Ballarat City fairytale continues on the netball court, with the A-grade side pulling off a nailbiting one-goal victory over East Point to advance through to the grand final. In an extremely physical preliminary final at Eastern Oval on Saturday, North recovered from a nasty looking knee injury to goal shooter Jordyn Bibby in the opening quarter to grind out a victory. The full extent of the damage to Bibby s knee will not be known until she undergoes scans during the week. In one of the most memorable Ballarat Football Netball League matches of 2013, it was East Point that appeared in the box seat at the last change, leading by four goals. But a coaching masterstroke from North City s Annie McCartin saw Krystal Whitty come onto the court and slot perfectly into centre, while Stacey McCartin moved into wing attack and Louise McCartin took a seat on the bench. The moved reaped immediate rewards, with the four-goal margin eradicated almost instantly and in fact being completely reversed. The black and white led by four goals in the dying minutes but the Kangaroos were not done yet. However the final whistle blew and it was North that advanced into next week s grand final against Sunbury. McCartin said the win was the biggest moment she has witnessed in her many years of netball. This is the highlight of my career, she said. I was just so proud of the girls to come out and recover from Jordyn s injury and fight like they did. It was amazing. Like the senior footballers, North Ballarat City will now go up against Sunbury in the BFNL grand final next Saturday. BFNL RECORD

17 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES Message from Worksafe AFL Victoria Country WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country, Country Football Manager, Brett Connell THERE is always something pretty magical about Grand Final day. After a long and arduous winter, spring has arrived and with it comes the most important match on the football calendar. Regardless of whether you re a player, coach, umpire or supporter with your hopes hinging on the premiership decider, or just an interested onlooker, Grand Final day is always an occasion to savour. I would like to wish all teams who are competing today the best of luck and I hope win, lose or draw, you continue to be involved in country football in 2014 and beyond. While I m certain there have been many highlights on the field this season, off it, much has been achieved. The restructure of country football administration is close to being complete, 18 months ahead of schedule. Nine Region Commissions are already in place, with all 13 expected to be in place by November 1. Advertising for commissioners in Sunraysia, Wimmera/ Mallee, Yarra Valley and Central Murray has already begun with appointments expected in the coming months. Of the eight larger regions, six Region General Managers (RGMs) have been appointed with the interview process having also begun in the AFL South East and advertising for the AFL Gippsland RGMs under way. The state-wide appointment of 28 Football Development Manager (FDM) positions is also close to being complete with just two final appointments in AFL Gippsland to come. This group, which includes many new faces as well as former Area Managers and Regional Development Managers who have transitioned into the new FDM role, represents a significant investment in country football. The additional resources will be a significant asset to local football communities and provide on-ground support which is vital to help grow and develop the game in regional and rural Victoria. The restructure has placed greater emphasis on ensuring administration decisions are made by local people with the benefit of local knowledge and experience, and for the long term benefit of their specific region. Arguably the biggest highlight on the country football calendar this season was the WorkSafe Country Championships in May. Thirty six leagues took part with the Geelong FL edging out the Goulburn Valley FL to be crowned Victoria s No.1 country competition. Plans are already being made for an even bigger carnival in 2014 with more leagues indicating their intentions to compete. Next year will also see a representative side from WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country compete against a combined side of Metropolitan Melbourne s six senior competitions for the first time since The WorkSafe Games of the Month were again highly successful this season. Champion footballers Peter Knights, Terry Daniher, and for the first time, Gary Ayres, all entertained crowds at seven destinations across the state. The events, which will be back in 2014, helps to spread the important message of country football s biggest supporter, WorkSafe, to communities across Victoria and ensure workplace safety is something we all make a priority in our daily lives. Finally, I would like to thank the countless club and league volunteers that are the backbone of country football. Without your support our great game just wouldn t be possible. I hope you have a safe and happy off-season and return just as passionate in BFNL RECORD

38 RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE Senior Football Grand Final Preview Sunbury Lions COACH: Rick Horwood HBF: Scott Lobb W: Cameron McCabe BP: Niall McGovern HFF:Gregory Hay FB:Jack Sheahan FP: Timothy Hill CHB: Adam Short CHF: Joshua Burgess C: Andrew Duhau BP: Michael Coleman FF: Simon Clarke HBF: Brett Chambers FP: Ross Sleight HFF: Dale Ciunik W: Xavier Linton Ruck: Pat Cariss, RR: Mathew Medcraft, Rov: Jay Cheep Int: Joshua Styles, James Rizk, David Kovacevic, Matthew Parker, Ryan Monzell, Jack Sullivan Backline: The Lions backline has been solid without playing a starring role throughout season Losing premiership defender Alan O Connor at the start of the season has hurt the Lions, but Adam Short and Niall McGovern have stood up as the team s tall defenders this season. They match up well against the North City forwards, thanks in large part to the versatility of Brett Chambers and Michael Coleman, who are just as adept at zoning off and setting up Sunbury s attacking thrusts as they are at shutting down their opponents - don t be surprised to see Chambers float in front of the pack to take cut-off marks throughout the course of the afternoon, which is his specialty! Midfields: With Andrew Duhau set to come back into the side this week, the Lions midfield options are as good as it gets. Duhau and Jay Cheep are amongst the top ball-winners in the league, as well as having the ability to hurt sides on the scoreboard, and Matthew Medcraft has lifted his game this year to border on moving into the elite category. The versatility and toughness of Xavier Linton complements this trio. In the ruck, we know Pat Cariss is amongst the competition s elite, but David Kovacevic has the ability to be a game-breaker as the back-up ruckman in a match where North City s number one ruckman, Tristan Cartledge, will be missing. Forwards: One of Sunbury s main strenghts, as shown in last year s Grand Final when Simon Clarke took the game apart. The height of their forward line troubled Redan greatly in the Second Semi Final with Clarke, Dale Ciunik and Ross Sleight excelling as marking targets, and when you consider that Jack Sullivan is likely to come into the side and Josh Burgess sits at centre half-forward as well, it s going to take some height to beat them. At ground level, Linton can play tall or small and Medcraft is as good as anyone below his knees - crucial given the height in the Sunbury forward line. X Factor: Matthew Medcraft. The kid they called Crafty has matured into one of the key matchups in the Sunbury side, going from a forward pocket type to one of the main members of their on-ball rotations. With his pace and acute goal sense, he s the type of player that can kick three quick goals and take a game away from a side, and could be the difference this season. Overview: Much to like about Sunbury, especially on a dry track. They ve been here before and know exactly what needs to be done, and have managed their list throughout 2013 to ensure that they re at the peak of their powers now. If North City aren t on their game today, the Sunbury boys are going to have a shiny set of medals to match those they won last year. 36 BFNL RECORD 2013

42 RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE Senior Football Grand Final Preview North Ballarat City COACH: Rob Waters HBF: Daniel Jones W: Joshua Bromley-Lynch BP: Samuel Howard HFF: Marc Greig FB: Ryan Hobbs FP: Josh McDermott CHB: Brendan Howard CHF: Michael Williams C: Jason McNamara BP: Clay Jenkins FF: Jake Hicks HBF: Ryan Luke FP: Ayden George HFF: Daniel Ross-Smith W: Simon McCartin Int: Sam Bromley-Lynch, Daniel Kilpatrick, Jordan Harrison, Michael Todd, Mitchell Johns, Jess Palmer, Mitchell Jenkins, Jayden Orr, Mitchell Gilbert, Derrick Micallef Backline: Even with Daniel Ross-Smith under an injury cloud, North City s backline remains strong. Statistically the stingiest defence in the BFNL this season, they have a good mix of key backs (Ryan Hobbs, Brendan Howard), rebounding players (Clay Jenkins, Daniel Jones) and an out-and-out star in Ryan Luke who is equally adept at standing a tall centre half-forward as he is providing run and carry off half back. Whether they can match it with Sunbury s tall forwards remains to be seen, but they ve showed they can match it with the best all season Midfield: Their strong point, make no mistake about it. North City s midfield oozes class with the likes of two-time Henderson Medallist Jason McNamara, hard nuts Ayden George and Daniel Kilpatrick and the fleet of foot Simon McCartin. Jake Hicks adds some polish and the Bromley-Lynch twins add some excitement. They ll miss Team of the Year ruckman Tristan Cartledge, but Josh McDermott has stood up in the past two weeks - if he can draw even with Pat Cariss today, it s job done. Forwards: Versatile and dangerous. The addition of Michael Williams back into the side for the Preliminary Final gave them another tall target and adds another element to the North City forward line, as he s adept at bringing the ball to ground at marking contests and bringing his small men such as Keenan and Tyler George into the game. Shaun Lyle has been arguably the player of the finals series, booting nine goals against Redan in a virtuouso performance, and Marc Greig adds a stabilizing influence as the on-field forward coach. X-Factor: Shaun Lyle. As mentioned above, he s been the player of the finals series with 16 goals so far, if he gets going early, it could be a long day for the Sunbury backline. A tough match-up as he s a tall lad, but can play like a small forward at times. Adam Short looms as his starting opponent, but a change will need to be made. Overview: Injury has robbed North City of their best side, but they re still more than capable. They ll be hoping for a dry day, as they ll try and run Sunbury off their feet. Having said that, a wet day would also suit as it will bring Sunbury s tall forwards back to the pack and allow their defenders to run off them. There s no doubt they ve been the best side of the home-and-away season, and whilst it took a week to do so, they ve found their finals mojo...so look out Sunbury!! 40 BFNL RECORD 2013

47 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES BFNL Netball Report Red Onion Creative Ballarat FNL Netball Manager Kara Murray I would like to welcome everyone here to this year s BFNL Netball grand final, my first BFNL grand final as Netball Manager of the AFL Vic Goldfield Region. I certainly have had an interesting journey since accepting the position and have enjoyed the year immensely. Early November last year the BFNL entered into the inaugural Central Highlands regional State league netball competition. Thanks to Frank Pawlowicz, Katie Williams and Bernie Walsh who took on the coaching and management roles of the 17 and under team. And to Kate McMahon and Kirsty Walsh and Emma Jess, who coached and ran the open team. Our Open team had a wonderful first year by finishing Runner Up in the State and the 17&Unders missed out by only 3 goals to making the Regional Grand Final. We are pleased to announce that we will be entering an Open and 17&Under team into the 2014 Central Highlands Regional State League competition and are happy to confirm that we have secured Kate McMahon and Frank Pawlowicz as our 2014 RSL Coaches. Following the grand final, a thank you and best and fairest vote count was held at the Ballarat Leagues club in conjunction with the MCDFNL teams, congratulations to open best and fairest dual winners Erin Riley (Redan) and Emma Burton (Lake Wendouree) Fisher and 17&Under dual winners Monique Clark (Melton South) and Nina Cowie (Lake Wendouree). Thank you again to all Coaches, Bernie Walsh, Emma Jess and Mick Simpkins without your help the RSL teams would not have been able to take the court. The start of the season saw the BFNL included into the early adopter trial group of the new Netball Australia database system, My Netball this has proved to be a successful transition to the new system with clearances and scoring going straight onto the my netball website direct from the clubs which enables results and stats to be available soon after the completion of the games. Club coordinators have spent many hours throughout the season learning the new system, training their coaches and team managers to use the system and providing feedback, all factors creating additional workload to an already enormous job. Thank you to all Coordinators for your support and patience with My Netball it s greatly appreciated. This year we have had 1034 players / officials junior and senior registered within the BFNL on the My Netball System and after today they will have played / officiated / coached in 806 senior or junior games of netball throughout the 2013 season. We have had a successful 2013 Senior Interleague campaign, held this year in Ballarat against a strong Bendigo Football Netball League. Our senior team coming away with a well deserved hard fought win for the first time in 7 years. The 17&Under team fought hard against a highly experienced Bendigo side loosing by 18 goals. Congratulations to Open player Stacey McCartin (North Ballarat) and 17&Under player Monique Clark (Melton South) on receiving the AFL Victoria Country BFNL Best on Court Medals. This year also saw us introduce three junior Interleague teams in the 11&Under, 13&Under and 15&Under age groups. Our appointed coaches were Kelly Amoore, 11&Under, Prue Douglass, 13&Under and Natalie Stryker, 15&Under. These coaches and our support staff of Marika Barnes, Junior Netball Director and Courtney Barnes, coaching assistant and team manager worked tirelessly throughout the 8 week campaign which attributed to a wonderful first Junior Interleague campaign. Our teams played the Gisborne Netball Association on the 15th June with the 11&Under and 15&Unders finishing the day with a win. 11&Under,Rylee Love (Bacchus Marsh), 13&Under Kaylee Smith (Darley) and 15&Unders Sarah McCabe (Lake Wendouree) were awarded the best on court trophies for the day. The teams then travelled to Torquay during the second weekend of the school holidays to compete against the Junior Football Netball Geelong league s sides. Everyone involved had a great day and the girls played their hardest against three extremely tall and strong Geelong teams. 11&Unders won their game by 1 goal with the 13 s going down to experienced opposition by 8 goals and the 15 s surrendering to a much stronger well practised side by 33 goals. 11&Unders Ruby Cheesman (Lake Wendouree), 13&Unders, Grade Todd (Lake Wendouree) and 15&Unders Matilda White (North Ballart City) were awarded the best on court medals on the day. We had two great best and fairest vote count nights, congratulations to this year s best and fairest winners: Under 12 s-madison Selmon (North Ballarat City) - 26 Votes Under 14 s- Eva Gillett (Lake Wendouree) - 27 Votes Under 16.5 s - Ellen Mason (North Ballarat City) - 18 Votes Crockers Menswear and Schoolwear Most Valuable Junior Netballer was awarded to Tahlia Kirby (Sebastopol) Under 12 s player. Congratulations Tahlia. Under 18.5 s - Tarni Lopes (Darley) - 27 Votes C Grade- Emma Quayle (Ballarat) - 29 Votes B Grade- Ebony Piera (East Point) - 25 Votes A Grade- Brooke Thompson (Melton) - 32 Votes Our current structure will see some changes over the upcoming couple of years as our facilities develop which is exciting for the BFNL as we can see the opportunity for our competition to go from strength to strength. In 2014 the Junior BFNL structure will include a senior and reserve grade of 13&Under,15&Under and 17&Under age groups along with Clubs running a Tier 2: NetSetGo! Program for 8-10year olds inline with the new Netball Victoria junior membership development. These NetSetGo! programs will run across the week season. The BFNL will also run three Round Robin NetSetGo! tournaments throughout the year. Our Senior structure will remain at four sides with our under 18.5 competition changing to a 19&Under age group. With the improvement of our local recreation facilities over the upcoming 18 months we will have the opportunity for the 2015 season to grow by adding two 11&Under grades in the Junior competition and one more grade in the senior structure. I would like to thank Aaron Nunn for all of his support and encouragement throughout my first season in this role. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to many more action packed seasons to come. Thank you to Mick Simpkins and Marika Barnes our Netball Directors for your endless help and hard work throughout the season and to Deb Morrish our Umpiring Coordinator for your many hours of assistance in organising our wonderful umpires for this years finals series. Also, thank you to Shaun Kelly for your endless efforts in promoting and pushing for greater exposure of the netball contingent within our BFNL competition. Lastly thank you to all of the Junior and Senior Netball Coordinators this year for your support, patience and advice when I ve looked for experienced local knowledge during the season. You all do an amazing job and it s exciting that we have the opportunity to strengthen our competition together. Good luck to all teams competing in today s grand finals, enjoy your day, win or lose, remember you have made it into the grand final and that in itself is a great achievement. BFNL RECORD

53 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES A Grade Netball Grand Final Preview Sunbury v North Ballarat City The 2013 Red Onion Creative Ballarat FNL season reaches it s climax today with the Gull & Company A Grade Netball Grand Final between Sunbury and North Ballarat City, and what a game it promises to be. Whilst North Ballarat City have been the dominant side of the 2013 home-and-away season dropping just two games during the homeand-away season, both of those games were to Sunbury in Round 9, when the Lions monstered them at Clarke Oval and in Round 18, which was a much closer affair at Eureka Stadium. Much focus on this game will be centred on both teams goal arcs. In the Sunbury arc stands Sophie Gunn, the Team of the Year shooter who has had a remarkable 2013 season. Gunn s height and dead-eye accuracy has been one of the main reasons Sunbury are in the Grand Final - she shot 51 of Sunbury s 57 goals in the Second Semi Final against East Point at over 80% accuracy, and she looms as one of the key players North Ballarat City will need to stop should they wish to hoist the premiership cup this week. At the other end of the court, all eyes will be on the shooter position, and if Jordyn Bibby takes to the court after wrenching her knee in the opening quarter of last Saturday s Preliminary Final. Bibby has also had a phenomenal season, coming second to Melton s Melissa McCauley in the A Grade Sharpshooter award and having a similar impact for North City as what Gunn has had for Sunbury. The advantage for North City may be in the goal attack position, where they start Gina McCartin, a 2013 Team of the Year rep and the best player on the court in the 2012 A Grade Grand Final as a member of Lake Wendouree. Who starts on Gunn will be a debate that North Ballarat City coach Annie McCartin would have thrown around all week, and will largely depend on the availability of Bibby, as Emma Reus has the height and physicality to more than match it with Gunn, however if Bibby doesn t take to the court, Reus will likely have to start in the shooter s arc, which worked with fantastic effect late in the Preliminary Final. If Reus starts in attack, expect veteran Tania McKenny to take Gunn. At the other end, the matchup between Gina McCartin and Sunbury captain Rebecca Anstey could be the game s key matchup. McCartin works hard throughout the middle third to become almost another mid-courter, but with the pace and ability to quickly double back into the arc and make her shots. Anstey is pivotal in Sunbury s transition of the ball in defence and through the mid-court, and plays the game with great intensity. Whoever gets the upper hand in this game could very well decide the fate of the premiership. Sunbury vice-captain Bec Moffat will stand either Bibby or Reus closer to goal, and her physicality and positioning will make for a tough day for the North City shooter. The midcourt battle will likely decide the fate of this match. Prue Stanley and Hayley Mackie have been fantastic for Sunbury this season, and link up beautifully through the middle of the court to provide good ball for Gunn. Stacey McCartin has been equally as good for North City though - the runner up in the A Grade Best & Fairest this season and very much the barometer for North City s performance. Krystal Whitty, Tahni Nestor and Louise McCartin will all float through the other two mid-court positions for North City. My feel is that this game will be decided on how well North City can shut down Sunbury s supply through the midcourt, and on whether Bibby takes her place. If she does, it frees up Reus to take Gunn, but you would have to expect that if Bibby does take to the court, the Sunbury defenders will try and put her through a rigorous physical examination. This is going to be a game that goes one of two ways - it will be a nail-biter as North City s finals games have been so far this season, or it will be a blow-our, as Sunbury s finals games have been this season. In a close game I give North City the edge due to the rigours of their finals campaign to date, but if Sunbury can get on top early, then it could be a long day for the North City defenders. Prediction: In a close game, North City to just sneak over the line. BFNL RECORD

63 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES Bacchus Marsh Cobra Chatter Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club would like to thank all its sponsors and volunteers. Without these people supporting the club we wouldn t function or put football and netball teams out to play each week. This year for the netballers it has been a year things didn t go our way, however we have come out the other side with C Grade making the Grand Final. With the season near its end C Grade is still playing after a wonderful win against East last week and today we will hopefully complete a very successful year. This year we have used 17 players in C grade and they have all contributed to the success we are having. This is the second year in a row we have made the Grand Final and we will take the court with six new players in the team. Hopefully, this time we have a different result. A Grade had a very inconsistent year however our biggest blow came when we lost the league s leading goal shooter in Round 5. This was a body blow we didn t get back from. With other girls being unavailable at times and consist changes in team structure we couldn t match with the Easts and North City teams this year. On the other side of the coin we were able to have some younger players gain some valuable experience in A Grade and to realise what standard they need to get too. B Grade played finals again this year and went down in a tight finals match to Sunbury who went on to play in the Grand Final. This team suffered a little with A Grade losing players and therefore losing players themselves. This year the B Grade competition was the strongest we have seen and we matched with the best on our day. In the last game of the year we got within a couple of goals of Easts who were undefeated throughout which showed what a good team we had when at full strength. Our under 18.5 s had a very slow start to the season however the progress they made in the last 7 weeks was outstanding and they were able to match it with the best teams going around. The growth in the girls ability to play together and understand each other was fantastic. With most of them staying together next year we look forward to next season. The netballers would especially like to thank Bernie and Craig for their outstanding work throughout the season and I would like to thank all the girls who stepped on the court for the cobras this year. Go Cobras! BFNL RECORD

64 RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE Ballarat Swans Chatter Congratulations to the Simonds Swans U/18.5 Netballers in making the 2013 Netball Grand Final. They have had a successful home & away season finishing Minor premiers. A slight hiccup in the 1st qualifying Final saw them enter into an elimination situation but held their nerve to qualify for today s Grand Final. Good luck girls and bring home the flag. The Simonds Swans U/18.5 boys went into last week s preliminary Final confident that they could overcome a strong Melton South side. Unfortunately inaccurate kicking prevented any scoreboard pressure at the main break. The second half provided finals pressure football but at the end of the day the Swans could not turn around the main break deficient and ended their season at the Preliminary Final. Congratulations to the Players, match day support staff and Coach Jamie Gepp on reaching the finals. Last Monday night s Henderson Medal Count featured a number of Swannies: Josh Benfield - U/18.5 Best & Fairest Emma Quayle - C Grade Netball Best & Fairest Luke Brennan - Member of Team of the Year Colin Duffy - Administrator of the Year Mitch Rodd - Goal of the Year Congratulations to all award winners on the night. 65 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES Darley Devils Diary The final day has arrived for the BFNL 2013 season. Could we take this opportunity to wish all competing teams today the very best of luck, especially our Reserve footballers, who have deservedly earned their place to play off in the big one. The mighty Darley support will be in full force, so to the 22 guys that take the field, take the opportunity that presents itself, play with no regret and leave nothing behind. How you respond to the challenge will determine what you become after the game. We as a club wish Michael Parrot Delahay and his coaching staff all the best. The Henderson Medal count was held Monday night at Tabcorp Park and we would like to congratulate the respective winners on the night. Football success is measured by premierships, but we have to acknowledge our very own individual club winners. Tarni Lopes took out the U18.5 netball League Best & Fairest award. Tarni works hard on and off the track and it s a great reward for her efforts. Her mum Angela (Crossy) was a great netballer in her day for the DFNC so it s great to see second gen Darley girls coming through. It must be said that her athletic ability might come from her Dad s side. Big Travis Stephenson won the George King Medal for the Reserves grade Best & Fairest. Travis really is an ornament to the game. A champion on and off the field he truly has earned the respect from many over the years. Arguably the fittest he has been and at age 50 will probably play until he retires in fifteen years from now to go straight on the pension. Well done big fella - we love ya! Last but not least we congratulate Jake Edwards for taking out the BFNC most prestigious award The Henderson Medal. For those who were not there Jake showed his class in his acceptance speech and we are very lucky to have someone with such caliber as Jake. Jake played 4 senior games at Carlton and won a premiership with Port Melbourne before joining the Devils to play with his two brothers. He is a credit to himself and his family and we are so proud to have him at Darley. GO DEVILS! BFNL RECORD

The club would like to acknowledge the wonderful effort of our 2 under 12 teams in the juniors who both won the premiership a few weeks ago, congrats to Steggles and Reidy and all the young fella s. Also special mention to the 3 netball teams who competed in grand finals as well. A great effort by Nat, Dangles and Neil with the juniors, they have turned around a few lean seasons with a great group of volunteers and parents and a lot of hard work. Last week our under 18 girls were clearly beaten by a stronger Swans outfit but congrats to them for going so deep in the finals. A great effort by all our netballers as they all played finals, another great year with Sally and Ellen steering the ship. Also the club would like to acknowledge our football coaches with Webby, Bird and Gav doing a great job. 68 RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE Melton Bloods Banter Well our Reserves did not make the Grand Final being soundly trumped by Darley in the last quarter at the Eastern Oval in the Prelim. Our boys did a fantastic job to get as far as they did and all credit must go to their coach Shayne Simpson. Simmo put his heart and soul into the job and will strive to get the boys into the big one next season. The Henderson Medal is now done and dusted and the Bloods congratulate all winners and vote getters. Special mention to Melton s Brooke Thompson A Grade Netball B&F, Kate Williams PFD Netball Coordinator of the Year Ash Webber Jim Gull Medal Reserves Top Goals Scorer, Melissa McCauley Senior Netball Sharpshooter. Our own Presentation Night is coming up fast, if you have not already secured your seat you have better see Kate or Lisa fast. Now is the time to give thanks all helpers on game day for the hard work they put in all season. Too many to mention by name but the thanks of all the players and supporters should go to all the Coaches, Coaches Assistants, Team Managers, Netball Coordinators, Netball Umpires, Club Umpires, Interchange Stewards, Scorers, Time Keepers, Jumper Washers, Ground Managers, Runners, Water Boys, Scoreboard Attendants, Gate Keepers, Club Vote Givers, Raffle Tickets Sellers, Bar Staff, Beer Booth Staff, Canteen Staff, Thursday Night Meals Crew, Trainers, the Meltonians at Half Time and the many more people who are there every Saturday or Sunday Morning or Tuesday or Thursday evening. Without them the games cannot proceed. Then there is the Committee who work behind the scenes to keep this great club alive. Further up the tree are the umpires, the Ballarat Football League and their officials. We may not always agree but they have a hard job to do and are working in the best interests of the League and football as a whole. Speaking of Committee, please keep an eye out for the AGM Notices that will be published on our website and in the local paper in the near future. Like all committees it is a process of continual renewal and new faces and new ideas are always welcome. Another group, without whom we would not survive, is our sponsors. These generous supporters put a lot of money into the club year after year. Sure they may get a sign on the fence and an invitation to our Sponsors day or other functions but they are really doing it to keep local football netball clubs and local sport in general alive. Their support is much appreciated. Thank you all GO BLOODS IN 2014! 66 BFNL RECORD 2013

69 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES Melton South Panther Proffering Well I must say that it is nice to be writing for the record on the last Saturday of the BFNL season. It has been a while since our club has been an active member on the day, so it is great for us to join with all the other BFNL clubs who have sides representing. We wish you all well. Our Under 18 s have been the Pride of the Den this season and have gone from strength to strength. They play as a team and it is due to this fact that they have made it so far this season. A 19 point victory over Ballarat and a spot in the Grand Final was just reward for this group. Holzer and Carlin with 3 goals each led the way, while Humphries, Smith Bye, Morrissey, Hillier and Leggett all played well. All from the club wish the boys all the best today as they take on North Ballarat in which should be a ripper game of Under 18 s footy. In other news around the club, it is nice to see that Adam Hall and Peter Earl are back. After the fiasco that will be forever known as Pizza gate on Thursday night, it seems a Sunday morning rendezvous was all that was need for this fetching couple. Good to hear boys!! Finally, to all of our major sponsors, once again we thank you for your support throughout the year. Also, to all of the volunteers that have put in time and effort over the finals series to man the beer booths at all BFNL finals, we thank you as this revenue stream is a much needed source for the club and without your help, we would not be able to do this job effectively. As is the case for a lot of clubs, too few are doing too much, but the club thanks you for your effort. For the last time this year, remember the best team on the ground is ours.. Go South!!! 70 RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE North Ballarat City 10 years ago, a handful of loyal North Ballarat people embarked upon a difficult journey. Their aim was to return our club back to senior football in Ballarat after a 10 year hiatus. The reason for this was to give our junior players the opportunity to continue their football and netball at North Ballarat rather than have to go off to other clubs. During this journey, the loyal Northies encountered much opposition, some from within the club but a fair bit more outside of it. Despite this opposition, they would not be deterred. After being rejected on their first application to re-join the Ballarat Football League, we were eventually accepted by the Bendigo Football League. To this day, we still thank the Bendigo league for allowing us to play football and netball. Our first year was one of great trial and tribulation, losing every football game for the season including a heavy defeat of around 246 points in our final game. The following year brought limited success winning just four games for the season. In our third year, we were accepted back into our home town Ballarat Football League. Again we are appreciative of being accepted back in. During the next few years, success was limited and we only averaged around 4 wins a year. Now that we have our juniors coming through, we are starting to get some success and this culminates today in our first appearance in senior football and netball grand finals since re-joining the Ballarat League. Along with our under 18.5 football, today is an historic day for the club. All those people who helped get the club off running 10 years ago will be remembered and talked about over the next few days however two people must be mentioned publicly for without them, we wouldn t be here today. We speak of Paul Leahy and Terry Hay. When you see Paul and Terry today, just walk up and say thanks. Before we get into today s matches, we also like to thank Mark Petrie of Peach s Fruit Markets who has been a great supporter of this club for many years. Mark s support, along with his father Alec as treasurer, is another reason why we are here today. Please ensure that you support Mark and his stores when buying fruit and vegetables. Their new store is at 12 Coronet Street, Wendouree Vic. To today s games, the under 18.5 football qualified two weeks ago defeating today s opponent Melton South. In that game we really only put one good quarter together. The Melton South boys will not let us get away with that again so four quarters of our best possible football is a must. In netball last weekend, we gained the right to play today with a one goal win over East Point. This was despite an early injury to goal shooter, Jordan Bibby. Congratulations to Annie McCartin who has done an outstanding job delivering our netball program from the wilderness to a grand final appearance. Good luck to Annie and all of the players today. In the senior football, another outstanding performance from Robbie and the players has taken us into the grand final. Today s opponent will be harder than the previous two opponents but we have beaten them twice this year and are capable of winning his week. Sunbury will come out hard. Our players have shown that they can absorb that and apply pressure of our own. To all players competing today, the club has done all it can and it s now up to you. After the game we invite all club members and supporters to come back to the North Ballarat Sports Club to celebrate what will hopefully be a triple premiership winning day. Finger food and entertainment will be provided. A $10.00 entry fee is being charged to cover our overheads. As well, the North Ballarat Sports Club will also provide a gourmet B-B-Q also at a cost of $ The B-B-Q is being run by Sports Club and is in addition to the entry fee. 68 BFNL RECORD 2013

71 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES Redan Lion s Den Here we are at the end of the 2013 season, (where has the season gone), and we have Sunbury & North Ballarat City playing for the main prize in the Football today. Good luck to both of them and may the best team on the day take home the spoils. It is good to see that we have 5 different football clubs and we have 6 different Netball clubs involved in Grand Final Day and it gives a wide variety of clubs a chance to be involved in the day and a reward for all the hard work that has been put in by everyone throughout the season. We will be represented throughout the day by the Reserves Football team and the C Grade and U/18.5 Netball teams and we hope we can take home the spoils in these 3 games. This is the culmination of all the hard work put in by the players and the coaches as well as all the support people involved with the teams. Well done to Tom Lamb on being Runner Up in the Henderson Medal last Monday Night. Also well done to Scott Whiting who was also Runner Up in the U/18.5 s Football vote count last Monday Night. Last week saw the Seniors bow out of the race for the Premiership when they were defeated by North Ballarat City. Although they battled hard all game they were unable to get the job done. Overall a fairly good season but we hope we can go a step further next year. The B Grade Netballers season also came to end last weekend at the hands of East Point. After an even 1st quarter, East got a minor break in the 2nd quarter to open a handy lead at ½ time. Although the girls tried hard in the 2nd half they were unable to make up difference to see their season come to an end. Also a big Thank You to Darryl and all on the board for all their hard work throughout the season and also to everyone who has played a role in making sure all teams can make it out onto the grounds and courts each week. Without you we could have the success we have had throughout the season. There will be Dinner and drinks at The Den after the Grand Final. Vote Count Day will be held in The Den on Sunday 22nd September commencing at about 12pm. This year s Club presentation night is on Friday October 11th at Hollioake Park. 75 2013 GRAND FINAL SERIES 2013 Courier Player of the Year Award OUTGOING East Point coach Dan Jordan s stellar year in front of the goals has seen him named as The Courier s Ballarat Football League player of the year. A 10-goal haul in the final round of the year against Bacchus Marsh was enough to get Jordan just over the line, polling a total of 40 votes to finish just three votes ahead of 2011 and 2012 Henderson Medallist Jason McNamara (37), who did not poll in the final round. Jordan polled in nine of the 18 rounds, awarded the maximum five votes on six occasions, as adjudged by The Courier s football writers. The reporters allocated votes after each match on a basis. McNamara polled in 10 rounds, but unlike Jordan, was only awarded the maximum votes four times. Darley s Nathan Jackel and North Ballarat City s Tristan Cartledge (both 33) rounded out the top four. Jordan, who previously won The Courier player of the year award in 2006, the same year he won the Henderson Medal, said it was a thrill to win the award. I m actually still wearing the same watch as when I won last time, so it s probably time for an upgrade, he said. I sort of kept a bit of a look on the votes all year but not that often. It s a pretty prestigious award and I m honoured to win it. Although he fell just short in the Henderson Medal, Jordan scooped an armful of awards. He also collected the Tony Lockett Medal, named in the team of the year, named coach of the year and received the mark of the year award. And it would be amiss to not mention his fiancé Ebony Piera, who claimed the B-grade netball best and fairest award. It was a good night out and great to enjoy it with everyone from the club, he said.
