Othe Aab states would be inline fo U.S. amaments unde the poposal, made in the next to the last day of the Reagan administation and now the focus of discussions between the Bush White House and Congess. Also poposed: 200 Abams tanks, seven multiple-launched battlefield ocket systems and 1,500 Tow anti-tank missiles fo Kuwait; 40 Maveick ai-togound missiles with an infaed guidance system and electonic wafae gea fo Bahain; 24 F-16 jet fightes, 100 Maveicks and 100 Sidewinde ai-to-ai missiles fo Moocco, and seven of the battlefield ocket systems fo Saudi Aabia. Meanwhile, Pesident Bush held a pivate, hou-long meeting to discuss the S&L poblem. The meeting was attended by Chief of Staff John Sununu, Teasuy Secetay Nicholas Bady, Budget Diecto Richad Daman and epesentatives of five bank and S&L goups, said Fedeick Webbe, pesident of the U.S. League of Savings nstitutions, who attended the meeting. The list is classified ; a copy was obtained by The Associated Pess. Chales Redman, the State Depatment spokesman, declined to identify the weapons unde consideation fo sale. He stessed that the document did not amount to a "sale plan," but athe to the administation's "best estimate" of othe counties' weapons needs. "Each item has to be eviewed by this administation," Redman said. - Congess has the powe to block a puchase, but only if a majoity of both the Senate and the House eject a fomal White House notification of intended sale. see ARMS, page 4 Danny boy and gil Thee amigos TheObselve/Donald Pan Soin Hall esidents (left to ight) Dan Baett, Pat Soute and Chis Ba~cezak ventue acoss Main Quad in the cold aftenoon ai Thusday. Pay aise ejected by Senate in 95-5 vote WASHNGTON- The Senate on Thusday night voted to eject a poposed 51 pecent congessional pay aise, but Speake Jim Wight said the House would let it take effect next week and then vote to educe it to "a decent aise" of 30 pecent. The Senate voted 95-5 to eject the aise fo Congess and othe top fedeal officials, and to change the law to elim ~ inate cuent pocedues which allow a pay incease to take effect without a vote. The vote against the pay incease was lopsided but lagely symbolic, since both chambes must vote to block it. House pocedues make it easie to potect a pay aise in that chambe, and Wight, D Texas, continued as the main taget of opponents as he maneuveed to potect most of the aise. The Obseve Fiday, Febuay 3, 1989 NSDE COLUMN Note Dame shows its lack of divesity Note Dame has no class. All ight, some people hee do. But cetainly the pecentage is no highe than anywhee else in the wold. was athe disappointed with the esponse to the S-1 column pinted hee ealie this week. Lettes to the edito ae fine. Lettes to the autho ae fine. Calls to the autho's home consisting of obscene emaks that make the Jimmy Johnson calls sound fiendly ae not fine. The autho of the S-1 column committed a Motal Note Dame Sin: not only having an opinion that is not of the majoity, but going so fa as to expess it. Howeve, unlike all those phone calles, the autho had the guts to attach he name to what she wote. can espect the lette wites even if disagee with them. But anonymous phone calles ae contemptible. Note Dame is faily good at haassment. Witness the plight of homosexuals, who endue constant abuse and instant efeal to 'mandatoy counseling' upon discovey. Witness the Duids, a goup of students tying to sti up the campus fo An Tostal, only to be pelted with gabage by esidents of seveal doms. Witness an act of love between two people tun into instant expulsion. Haassment goes hand-in-hand with image consciousness hee. The administation has thei holy gails: no alcohol, no sex, no dugs, token gestues to libeal theology and minoities, nothing even vaguely contovesial. What othe school claims the whole wold as its campus when it comes to andom disciplinay action? But often the students hee ae just as bad. Enginees ae geeks, pemeds ae thoats, and eveyone else is a blowoff, except fo SMC chicks who ae afte a ing. And God fobid you'e one of those people- 'those' being minoities o chauvinists o feminists o homosexuals o atheists o non-white-middleclass-catholic-republican-male-jocks. mage consciousness is a hoible thing. t's pobably why thee's a huge poblem on campus with date ape: guys living up to thei image. t's pobably why thee's a huge poblem on campus with eating disodes: gils living up to thei image. can just hea the typical Domes eading this column now (those of you who haven't stopped eading and called me an aogant bastad). "f you didn't like the place, why did you Mak Mclaughlin News Edito ooooooou, L~Ok.. 'T''S A l)r,uuljut D. come hee?" Well, if Note Dame botheed to send feshmen a copy of Du Lac and the Hono Code befoe they asked fo the $200 deposit, pobably would have known bette. Sue, this place is Catholic. So's St. Joe High. But this place calls itself a univesity. f Note Dame is eve going to be a tue univesity, thee needs to be an open discussion of ideas. Even non-catholic ones. As long as we cling to the idea that discussion is fine as long as you come up with the "ight," i.e. appoved, answes, this place will be a football school. Humans seem to delight in telling each othe what they aen't allowed to do. Univesities ae supposed to shelte students fom that pessue, not cement it into place. But the school walls people in hee, and the students wall themselves in. Anyone who doesn't look ight gets slammed, just like the eal wold. So please, spae the "Note Dame family" hetoic. t's moe like a club. Why can't we just let people be? One last thing, fo all you teeming millions who might plan on telling me off fo calling you names: Please save my oommates the hassle of having to put up with me. Wite P.O. 3 ~ ~ ~ ~~ Fiday, Febuay 3, 1989 The Obseve page 3 SMC opens seies on divesity with lectue By KERRY SCANLON News Staff Saint May's "Gatheing Voices" seies on cultual and ethnic divesity opened Thusday night with a lectue on post-wold Wa Ameica by Japanese-Ameican atist Steve Muakishi. Muakishi's lectue, "Heo, She, Ma: n Post Ameica'' discussed ethnic and acial diffeences within Ameican society fom a Japanese-Ameican pespective. He said two events that shaped postwa Ameica fo Japanese-Ameicans wee the atomic bomb dopped on Hioshima and the intenment camps of Wold Wa. The attack on Peal Habo ceated mass hysteia and animosity towad Japanese Ameicans living on the west coast, pompting Pesident Fanklin Roosevelt to ode native Japanese and Ameicans of Japanese descent to contol stations, Muakishi said. Although the United States was also at wa with Gemany and taly, no Geman Ameicans o talian Ameicans wee subjected to blanket exclusion odes like those imposed on Japanese, Muakishi noted. Evacuated Japanese- Ameicans wee foced to leave possessions o sell them. While thei families wee in intenment camps, some 25,000 Japanese Ameicans seved in Ameica's amed foces, he said. The Fedeal Reseve Bank of San Fancisco estimated in 1942, based on popety claims, that Japanese-Ameicans lost moe than $400 million in pesonal belongings. Muakishi said thee was a good end to the intenment expeience on August 10, 1988, 1 when Pesident Reagan signed a edess bill to compensate those intened by Roosevelt's executive ode. Japanese-Ameicans have eceived geat benefits fom the Ameican system of highe education, Muakishi said. Minoity hiing pactices have opened the doos and as J a goup the Japanese Ameicans have the highest aveage income of any goup in Ameica, he said. Muakishi said he feels thee is a bight futue fo a stong, pogessive elationship with all Ameicans. But he added that thee ae "distubing signs, and a atmosphee of gowing hated and hostility seen in acially motivated attacks and senseless mude." Muakishi is head of the pintmaking depatment at Canbook Academy of At in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Thee of his woks, "Lucky Wong," "Recite:Heo, She, Ma" and "Hadball" will be displayed in the Moeau Galley. Takeshita was equally upbeat. Standing alongside Bush in a coloful depatue ceemony on the South Lawn of the White House, Takeshita said thei session "maked a new stat fo U.S.-Japan coopeation." Both leades pledged close economic and political coopeation- Bush vowing to wok to dive down the U.S. budget deficit and Takeshita pomising that Japan would accept moe impots. 9 Fiday, Febuay 3, 1989 Viewpoint page Eating disodes pose dange at NO Edito's note: The following is the fist in a seies of five aticles dealing with eating disodes. Last Mach, the Univesity Counseling Cente conducted a suvey of all the undegaduate women on campus egading thei eating habits and thei attitudes and behavios elated to eating disodes. Foty-fou pecent of the women suveyed esponded, a vey positive esponse ate. The Counseling Cente staff would like to expess ou appeciation to the women who paticipated in the suvey. You enabled us to bette undestand the issues of eating disodes fo women on campus. n addition to expessing ou thanks fo you help, we also want to shae a summay of ou esults with you and the est of the Note Dame community. We plan to do this in two ways. Chistine Conway guest column Fist, The Obseve will be unning a seies of aticles this week in the Viewpoint section on eating disodes. The fist thee aticles in this seies will focus on vaious aspects of the suvey esults. The final two aticles wee witten by students elating thei own pesonal expeiences with eating disodes. Second, membes of the Univesity Counseling Cente staff will be meeting with goups of women's doms to pesent moe detailed infomation about the esults of the suvey, answe questions, and get ideas about ways we can addess these issues on campus. You can find out moe about the esults of the suvey by attending a feedback session in one of the doms. The sessions will be held beginning this Sunday, Feb. 5: Sunday--Faley, 7 p.m. Monday--Been-Philips, 7 p.m. Tuesday--Knott, 6:30p.m. Wednesday--Lyons, 7 p.m. Thusday--Badin, 6:30p.m. While the suvey focused upon the pevalence of eating disodes among women, eating disodes ae not exclusively a female issue. Men also develop eating disodes, although not in the alaming popotions as do women. n addition, as the pevalence of eating disodes inceases in women, men ae moe likely to be affected. You siste, gilfiend, futue wife o daughte may be affected by an eating disode. t's impotant that you undestand what eating disodes ae and what factos contibute to thei development so that you can be a suppotive and positive influence to the women in you life. We encouage you to ead the aticles this week, to attend one of the feedback sessions, and to talk to the women you know about thei expeiences and views on this issue. Eating disodes fall into two pimay categoies, anoexia and bulimia. Anoexia is defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Revised (DSM--R) published by the Ameican Psychiatic Association as: 1) body weight of 15 pecent below that expected; 2) an absence of menstual cycle due to low body weight; 3) concen about weight and shape; and 4) an intense fea of gaining weight. Estimates of the pevalence of anoexia indicate that between 1 in 100 to 1 in 800 women suffe fom this disode. The onset of anoexia is usually between the ages of 13 and 20. Anoexia kills appoximately 5-21 pecent of those who suffe fom it. Bulimia is defined by the DSM--R as: 1) ecuent episodes of binge eating; 2) two binges pe week; 3) the expeience of being out of contol while hinging; 4) concen about body shape and weight; and 5) engagement in any of the following methods of puging: vomiting, stict dieting, excessive execise, laxative use, o diuetic use. n othe studies using simila citeia, the incidence of bulimia is epoted to be appoximately 3 pecent. The onset of bulimia tends to be late than fo anoexia and is often poceeded by a peiod of estictive dieting. The esults fom the Note Dame suvey indicate that 0.6 pecent of the espondents wee diagnosable as anoexic. This is simila to that found in othe studies. Seven pecent of the espondents wee consideed to be bulimic, a little moe than double the fequency epoted in compaable studies. An additional fou pecent of the espondents exhibited all but one of the symptoms of anoexia, and 9 pecent epoted all but one of the symptoms of bulimia. Thus, a total of 20 pecent of the espondents to the Note Dame suvey have eithe a diagnosable eating disode o a seious eating poblem. Foty-six pecent of the espondents have some symptoms of an eating poblem. Fifteen pecent indicated that they ae "concened about thei weight," and 19 pecent showed no symptoms of an eating disode. The liteatue suggests that the nom fo women is to exhibit some concen about thei weight and appeaance. Theefoe, this goup was also consideed to fall within the nomal ange. This data suggests that the fequency of distubed eating behavio among Note Dame women is quite high, occuing in two-thids of the women who esponded to the suvey. The etiology of eating disodes is multifaceted and is most typically found in the inteaction between sociocultual, developmental, biological and familial factos. Ou society stigmatizes the obese and values attactiveness, paticulaly thinness. Numeous studies suggest that these attitudes affect people of all ages and that these social noms fo thinness ae applied moe stongly to women than to men. Women at geatest isk fo eating disodes ae those who have accepted and intenalized most deeply the sociocultual moes about thinnness and attactiveness. Cetain envionments also incease the isk of eating disodes. Note Dame epesents one such envionment because it is pedominantly middle and uppe class, and it is a stessful semi-closed situation whee the sociocultual pessue to be thin may be intensified. The competitive school envionment may foste not only academic competition but also competition egading the achievement of a ND spiit caies to basketball Dea Edito: As celebated ou football team's national championship outside of the stadium in Tempe, it was impossible to esist a special feeling of accomplishment that dated back to my feshmen yea, Lou Holtz's fist season as head coach. t was stange how a season filled with many fustating and disapointing losses could seem so impotant now, but, like many of the playes, felt a sense of satisfaction knowing a goal had been eached. am sue that my feelings ae not unique. As students and fans, we ae poud to have suppoted ou team as fevently in 1986 as we did this past yea. P.O. Box Q 9 beautiful (i.e. thin) body. ndividuals who paticipate in activities that dictate cetain body weights such as dances, models, actesses, and athletes also evidence a geate incidence of eating disodes. Although ou society pescibes a thin ideal, some women ae genetically pedisposed to have a heavie body weight. Dieting, the cultually pescibed method of achieving this thin ideal, often esults in eating poblems. Dieting is not only an ineffective way to attain long-tem weight loss, but it may also contibute to subsequent weight gain, binge eating and selfdefeating psychological esults. To what extent does the Note Dame community, and moe specifically you own attitudes and behavios, foste an envionment in which people need to achieve some "ideal" in ode to be accepted? The staff at the Univesity Counseling Cente hopes that you will take some time this week to lean moe about eating disodes. We encouage you to ead the aticles appeaing in The Obseve this week and to attend a feedback session in one of the women's doms. Again, thank you to all the Note Dame women who made this suvey possible. Chistine Conway, Ph.D., is a psychologist at the Univesity Counseling Cente. t is impotant to ealize that a simila oppotunity exists with the basketball team. The talent of this yea's feshman class and the absence of any gaduating senios ae easons to be excited about next yea's season, yet it is just as impotant to suppot the team now. Student suppot has cetainly impoved fom last yea, and Sunday's game against Duke offes an oppotunity to push Note Dame basketball to a geate level of success. As the past thee football seasons have demonstated, success is seldom achieved ovenight. As Note Dame students and fans, we owe this team the same patient and loyal suppot that we have given ou football team. But Duke coach Mike Kzyzewski had thee easons to like what he saw fom his team in Sunday's victoy ove Clemson. The Tiges wee competing without six playes seving a one-game suspension fo violation of academic study hall ules. Duke's easy victoy signalled the end of its thee-game losing steak, the etun of injued All-Ameican Danny Fey and signs of the dominating defense that Coach K has sought fom his Blue Devils all season. "Consideing all the unusual cicumstances, we got much moe out of the game than thought we would," said Kzyzewski, whose team plays Note Dame at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Joyce ACC. "t helped moe than thought it would afte heaing about the suspensions. About Duke Fey scoed 12 points in Sunday's game and appeaed healthie than he has been in some time. Afte suffeing a back mjuy two weeks ago, the 6-10 senio fowad played with pain in losses to Noth Caolina and Wake Foest, then sat out a loss to Noth Caolina State. The thee-game skid, coming afte Duke had won its fist 14 games and held on to the numbe-one position fo the fist two months of the season, caused the Blue Devils to fall into the bottom half of the Top 20. "No one was a clea numbe-one choice, and we knew that," said Kzyzewski. ''A couple of teams we played that we thought would be ealy tests fo us, especially Kentucky, fo whateve easons ween't those ealy tests. This has been an unusual yea fo us." Heading into a Thusday night game at Geogia Tech, Fey was aveaging 21.9 points and 7.1 ebounds pe game to lead the Blue Devils in both categoies. He anked second on the team with 86 assists. Othe Duke playes in double figues include fowad Robet Bickey (12.4), guad Phil Hendeson (11.5) and cente Alaa Abdelnaby (10.8). Senio point guad Quin Snyde led the team with 114 assists. Sophomoe Geg Koubek and feshman Chistian Laettne also see plenty of playing time fo the Blue Devils. Kzyzewski is paticulaly pleased with the ecent play of Snyde, who has emeged as both a scoing theat and an inspiational leade. "We've tied to change his ole so that he and Phil altenate the ballhandling, and he can get in scoing situations," said Kzyzewski. "He plays This blocked shot by Robet Bickey (21) exemplifies the potency of a Duke defense unning at full stength. Blue Devils coach Mike Kzyzewskl believes last Sunday's win ove Clemson might have begun a etun of the dominating defense that led Duke to the Final Fou last season. eally had, eally emotionally. He puts eveything he can into the ballgame, whethe on the cout o on the bench." Playes on the Duke bench Sunday highlighted Blue Devil allies by slapping thei hands on the floo, a tademak of last yea's Final Fou squad. Kzyzewski hopes the etun of that pactice also symbolizes the etun of the swaming Duke defense that got the Devils into the Final Fou. "We played defense as a team bette than we have all season long in the second half," said Kzyzewski, efeing to last Sunday's game. "We wee swaming the ball, and guys wee coming ove to help out. We hadn't seen that type of defense this season. The kids had thought they wee playing good defense, and they wee playing good defense. They just ween't playing Duke defense." Much of Duke's ealy defensive poblems ealy esulted fom Billy King's gaduation. King epitomized the Devils' defensive powess last season, causing Note Dame supesta David Rives and Temple's Mak Macon to play thei wost games of the yeb:'. Now it appeas that Kzyzewskt has his defense back whee he wants it, and also has a healthy Fey back in the lineup. The ish know that pesents an imposing combination. "They'e fundamentally sound, wellcoached, have an excellent defense and a geat leade in Danny Fey," said ish co-captain Jamee Jackson. "They'e always a tough team to play against because of those things." About Note Dame Duke has split a pai of games with Note Dame ove the last two yeas, with the ish winning at the Joyce ACC in 1986 and Duke taking one at home last yea. Kzyzewski knows he is facing an entiely diffeent ish squad this time. " watched them when they played ndiana," said the ninth-yea Duke coach. "They'e impoved with thei depth, they play vey had and they have good thee-point shooting." Heading into Thusday night's Maquette game, feshman LaPhonso Ellis continued to lead the ish in both scoing (15.0 points pe game) and ebounding (10.2 boads pe game). The 6-9 feshman fowad also has blocked 22 shots. "They (Note Dame) always play good defense, and he (Ellis) gives them shot-blocking ability," said Kzyzewski. "He can scoe, he's a good offensive ebounde and gives them a big taget inside. He'll be one of the eally good playes in the county fo fou yeas." Othe ish playes scoing in double figues ae guad Joe Fedick (14.6), Jamee Jackson (12.6) and Keith Robinson (12.4). Stating point guad Tim Singleton was aveaging 6.1 points with 81 total assists in the team's fist 14 games. Robinson also aveages 8.9 ebounds pe game, second among Note Dame playes. "He (Robinson) is pobably the most undeestimated playe on the team, yet he's pobably the glue to ou success that keeps eveybody sticking togethe," said Phelps. "You talk about Joe Fedick, Jamee Jackson, Tim Singleton having geat games, LaPhonso Ellis having geat games, Keith Robinson's the guy most consistent with double-figue points and doublefigue ebounds." Note Dame has gotten much moe balanced scoing in its last few games. Eleven diffeent playes scoed in a win ove SMU, fou playes had moe than 10 points in last week's victoy against Rutges and five playes wee in double figues in Tuesday's win ove Dayton. Feshmen Elme Bennett and Daimon Sweet have povided much of Note Dame's stength off the bench. Bennett scoed 12 points in the Dayton game and also scoed in double figues against San Fancisco and UCLA. Sweet has aveaged 11 points a game ove his last thee outings, scoing 15 against Rutges and 14 vesus Dayton. Befoe Thusday's game, the ish had won five of thei last six games, including a win ove Temple in a nationally televised game last Sunday. That come-fom-behind victoy ove the Owls at the Joyce ACC has Phelps excited about this team. "They showed poise and matuity," said Phelps. "Afte being down fou with some thee minutes to play, we go on an 11-4 sput to win the game against a petty good Temple team. "When we play at home, the enthusiasm fom the students and the band is eally just in amazement ove how these kids just believe they'e going to go out and play against people." The ish ealize they will face one of thei toughest tests of the yea Sunday when they meet the esugent Blue Devils. They still ae confident of coming out on top. "t's a stiff challenge," said Jackson. "They (Duke) ae one of the top teams. But we feel we can play with anybody in the county, and if we do the things we'e supposed to do, we have a shot." Looking back, the junio cocaptain couldn't have been moe pleased about the esults of his meeting with Digge Phelps. "We talked about the type of people he was binging to the team and the people coming back, and he asked me what thought," said Jackson. 14 _ ~ - nape 4 ish Exta Fjday Febuay Fey stikes fea into the heats of his opposition Duke fowad posting big numbes despite injuy By BETH TORLONE Duke Chonicle DURHAM, N.C.--His numbes will astonish you. Senio fowad Danny Fey leads both his team and the Atlantic Coast Confeence in scoing with 21.9 points pe game and is second on the team in assists with 89. Fey also leads Duke in ebounding (7.3), minutes played (30.5), and chages taken (13). The Bowie, Md., native has been the team's leading ebounde in nine games and Duke's top scoe in 10 contests, including his ACC ecodbeaking 58-point explosion in the Blue Devils' defeat of Miami in Decembe. But the opposition is fightened by moe than Fey's numbes-- they eveal only pat of the stoy. The immeasuable intangibles of Fey's game must also be consideed in ode to appeciate the impact he has made upon Duke basketball. Fey emains the catalyst fo the 12th-anked Blue Devils; his passing, cout pesence and leadeship all help hold this team togethe. Fom an individual standpoint, Fey has woked this yea to efine his game to a point of nea pefection. Basketball expets continually claim Fey has edefined the big man's game, and his pefomance this season has justified those statements. "Fey is one of those ae playes who doesn't so much play a position as he does play the game," said Ron Geen, J., of Basketball Weekly. "He's capable of contolling a game with his wondeful talents." Recently, Fey sat out the fist game of his collegiate caee against Noth Caolina State because of a back injuy incued in the second half of Duke's win ove Mayland. He etuned the next game and notched 12 points in the Blue Devils' destuction of Clemson. "My back feels eally good," Fey said last Sunday. "My biggest poblem ight now is getting back in shape." Fey has become one of colbasketball's playes. Last season, he went home with a suitcase full of tophies, including Atlantic Coast Confeence Playe of the Yea, ACC Athlete of the Yea, All-Ameica, John Wooden Awad Finalist, U.S. Olympic Team Finalist, and Most Valuable Playe of the 1988 ACC tounament and the 1988 NCAA East Regional. Danny Fey This season, Fey's face was plasteed on the cove of nealy all the pe-season college hoops magazines. Neve in the annals of Blue Devil basketball had one playe eceived as much pe-season publicity as Fey. Although the notoiety pleases the Blue Devil faithful, the opposition has foced Fey to pay a hefty pice fo his fame duing the season. " definitely think that, because 'm getting all these peseason honos, it is going to put a little moe attention on me by the people 'm playing against," said Fey befoe the season. "They'e not going to have to look too fa to know who Duke is, who thei bette playes ae. And they'e going to key on us this yea because we'e going to have a eally good team." "Some othe big guys, some othe fowads and centes aound the league ae going to say, 'This guy is getting so much publicity, can make my name against him.' That's a big challenge fo me. t's going to be tough. t's exciting." The elde Fey also pedicted that opponents will on his son. "He's going to see tick defenses," said Bob Fey, geneal manage of the NBA's Washington Bullets. "He's going to see so many diffeent things it's had to tell... 'm cetain he'll get that type of espect (as a taget playe fo the opponents). know this: they can stop him, but (his teammates) will get the ball whee they should get it. He'll do that." Exultations fom coaches, playes and fans came in the wake of a stella junio yea, but Fey's thid season began with elatively little hoopla fom the media. Noth Caolina's J.R. Reid was gabbing most of the attention at that point, although Fey finished the season well ahead of his Ta Heel ival in most statistical categoies. Pollstes failed to include Fey in thei pe-season All Ameica picks Most eventually egetted that decision as Fey dominated the confeence in the campaign. He led the league with 19.6 points pe game and pulled down 7.6 ebounds while dishing out 139 assists fo good measue. "He's (Fey) one of the geat playes that we have in the college game," said Kentucky head coach Eddie Sutton. "You'e not going to be able to stop him by any means, but you hope that you'll be able to keep him unde contol." Although Fey's junio season was his coming-out paty, his sophomoe season was filled with many ecodbeaking moments. Duing the season, Fey became the fist playe in the 35-yea histoy of the ACC to lead his team in scoing 04.0 points pe game), ebounding (7.8) and assists (141, 4.3 pe game). While the Champ's "stomach clenched" at the vey name of his challenge, Kid Gullet, the Champ had a stategy to counte the awesome attack of the Kid: staches and heavy syups. Taken fom his collection "Descent of Man," "The Champ" is one of many stoies whee T. Coahessan Boyle inflicts his maniacal wit and vision on a wold we think we know. As the highlyacclaimed autho of thee novels and much shot fiction, it is Note Dame's good fotune in having Boyle cometc. Richad McBien, diecto of the Sophomoe Liteay Fest mence this yea's Sophomoe Liteay Festival Sunday night. A black humoist as good as any witing in the U.S. today, Boyle, with his ieveence and penchant fo the satiistically sueal, takes pemises as won as those of "The Champ" and cafts them into stoies bubbling with absudity, and often, anxiety. "The Champ," fo example, featues a bout between men whee the biceps and pectoals ae of much less consequence than the jaws and stomach. Two gomandizing gladiatos mesmeize an SRO cowd at the Gaden in an eating contest coveed by ABC Spots and attended by Julia Child, Colonel Sandes and Mamma Leone. n his less obviously comic pieces, Boyle is at his most biting, and also his most unneving. n "Bloodfall," a goup of fiends gatheed fo a night of civil Bohemian celebation suddenly notice a ed ain falling along the popotions of Noah's Ak. The comedy aises fom the tension of deciding whethe it is the end of the wold, vesus ignoing it and putting anothe souffle in the oven. "Descent of Man" shows the gowing anxiety of a eseache at a pimate cente as he ealizes the woman he loves is slipping away fom him. We ae caught up in the man's omantic yeanings, despite leaning that she is a chimp. The Festival itself uns all of next week with a diffeent autho eading his wok at 8:00p.m. each night in the libay auditoium, and a eception follows each eading. Admission is fee, and though Boyle's name may be new to you, he is a highly-egaded autho whose name may be as familia as Kut Vonnegut's in the nea futue. Sunday night povides a ae oppotunity to expeience a lively and impotant pesonality in liteatue that won't be soon fogotten. i ' i' l Fiday, Febuay 3, 1989 Senio Ba to host live R&B CHRS WELSH accent wite f you have R&B in you soul, then the place fo you to be tonight at 10:00 is the Alumni Senio Club, whee Billy "Stix" Nicks and the N's and Out's will be entetaining those in attendence with a healthy mix of R&B, blues, jazz, soul even some contempoay music. Bill Nicks, the goup's leade has descibed them as "a multi-talented goup with a tatse of music fo eveyone." Fo those unfamilia with Bill's wok, this South Bend Cental High School alumnus is no stange to the music industy. Afte high school, he and some fiends fomed a band, the Rhythm Rockes, and appeaed egulaly on a local teen dance show boadcast by WNDU-TV. Afte a stint in the Amy in the late 1950's, duing which Bill pefomed with the Amy Big Band and a small jazz goup, he etuned to the U.S. and went on the oad with Jackie voy and the Gents of Soul in n 1966 he began pefoming with fellow South Bend native J. Walke and his "All Stas." They ecoded the hit, "How Sweet t s To Be Loved By You." Togethe they pefomed at many famous musical venues, such as the Apollo Theate in New Yok, the Uptown in Philadelphia, Shea Stadium, and Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Duing his long caee Bill Nicks has woked with Mavin Gaye, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Fou Tops, the Temptations, the Spinnes, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett, and many othe stas in the Atlantic Recods stable of talent. n 1985, Bill oganized the pesent goup, which consists of Robet Outley, guita and vocals; Dan Chambelain, guita; Steve Pake, keyboads; Duane Lighte bass Ed "E-Z" Wight,' vocal~; and Billy "Stix" Nicks, dums and vocals. They have been pefoming quite egulaly at Cente St. Blues Cafe in Mishawaka, and have eceived favoable eviews in the pocess. Michiana Student Expessions called Ed Wight "one of the best pefomes in the Midwest," and uged eades not to miss "this goup's good stuff." So if you'e in the mood fo geat live music fom Duke Ellington's "Take the 'A' Tain" to classic sixties R&B, the paty atmospllee and pofessional sound of Billy "Stix" Nicks and the N's and Outs is waiting fo you at the Alumni-Senio Club tonight. 18 ~ ~ ~----~ , ~pag~e~14~ ~t~h~e~o~b~s~e~~~e~ F_id_a~y,_F_e bua~ Weave, ND meet No.8 Oklahoma By DAVE McMAHON Spots Wite Feshmen Chuck Weave and Macus Gowens will etun to thei old stomping gounds Satuday as the ish westling squad tavels to Noman, Okla., to take on the eighthanked Soones. The fist-eve matchup against Oklahoma should be one of Note Dame's most difficult matches on the schedule. "We'll have to westle seven minutes in each match if we'e going to win," said head coach Fan McCann. Weave, who compliled a ecod at the heavyweight level ove fou yeas at Midwest City (Okla.) High School, is coming off an 11-1 defeat to Michigan State's Mak Zenas. Gowens, at the 126-pound mak at Del City (Okla.) High School, also lost in the Michigan State dual meet to Bian Smith. The ish, with one of the toughest dual meet schedules in the nation, ae looking fowad to the challenge of facing the poweful Soones. "Just the fact that they ae on the schedule says a lot fo how fa this pogam has come, and whee we wnat it to go," said McCann. Weave began his successful caee at the ipe age of eight. The oad to his pomising futue began with an inteesting twist. " walked into a spoting goods stoe to buy football pads and the owne, who was the coach of a YMCA westling team, asked me if wanted to ty out fo his team," said Weave. "He said looked liked would have a shot at making the team, so tied out and the est is histoy." Just like most successful athletes, an extensive childhood pogam can be a key to the athlete's futue. n Oklahoma, the westling mat becomes a familia place to youngstes. "We had a geat Little League pogam," said Weave. "The high school coaches put the finishing touches on eveything we leaned thoughout gade school." The close ties that he made while gowing up in one of the pemie westling states will be out in foce to see Chuck in his homecoming. But the pessue of his family and fiends attending the meet doesn't concen Weave. "'m eal excited about having the oppotunity to go back home to see eveyone," he said. "t'll be nice to have all my fiends cheeing fo me when need thei suppot. Hopefully can come away with a win and get some people to ecognize the pogam we'e establishing." The ish men's team (6-3) will be looking fo evenge against the Cadinals at 4 p.m. afte last yea's naow loss at Ball State. The defeat was especially painful fo Note Dame. Both teams will field basically the same lineups as last yea, and the top times fo each team in eight of the individual events make the winnes too close to call. The diving and elay events may end up being the deciding factos in the meet. Ball State's men's team has at least two outstanding swimmes in Holland native Winand Williges and Eic Rauschei. 24 ~~ ~----~----~ ~-- -- page 20 ish sputte, then slam Waios By GREG GUFFEY Spots Wite Fo ove 38 minutes Thusday night, Note Dame stuggled against a pesky Maquette team. Then, the ish tuned it into just anothe day at the gym. While impoving to 12-3 with a victoy ove the Waios, the ish made a statement with fou temendous slam dunks in the last 1: 16-a statement that this team can eupt without advance waning. "t was just like being at the Rock," said Note Dame cocaptain Joe Fedick, who capped the dunkfest. "t was just fun. Eveyone made sue eveyone else got a dunk." The dunks capped off an impessive stetch un fo the ish, who impoved to 12-3 with the win. The young squad matued in the closing minutes, outscoing Maquette 144 in the last 3:26. " thought it was inteesting in the last thee minutes how we didn't fold, but exploded, as tied as these kids ae," ish coach Digge Phelps said. " guess that's a sign of matuity. With thee games in five days and no senios, that was vey inteesting to see how we esponded." Note Dame has also gained matuity in clutch fee-thow shooting. The ish sank 24-of- WEEKEND SPORTS NSDE Swim teams close out home season... page 18 Women's tennis hosts Eck Doubles Classic page 15 Hockey hosts Michigan Deabon.... page 14 A beginne's guide to fencing page foul shots, much impoved fom the 8-of-20 showing in a loss to Syacuse two weeks ago. "That's the fist time we've gone to the foul line and put it in when it counted," Phelps said. "We've been woking on that the past month and it's finally paying off now." Jam ee Jackson led the ish with 23 points and Fedick added 20 points, all in the second half. Feshman LaPhonso Ellis tossed in 17 points and Keith Robinson added 10. The game may have ended at the playgound, but it was anything but fun in the fist half. The Waios steaked to an eight-point lead at with 5:59 to play in the half, thanks lagely to the play of fowads Tevo Powell and Tyone Baldwin. The duo combined fo 22 points in the fist half. The ish allied late in the half, outscoing the Waios in the last 5: 04 to cut the magin to at the half. n that fist half, the Waios outebounded Note Dame and foced nine ish tunoves. "Ou game plan was to keep thei bodies off the backboad,'' Maquette caoch Bob Dukiet said. "n the fist half, we hung in fo awhile. We played a sagging defense and see SLAM, page 16 Spots The Obseve Pat Kusek Co-captain Joe Fedick gets n on the fun n the final minutes of Thusday night's game. Fiday, Febuay 3, 1989 Ga. Tech outlasts Duke ATLANTA-Dennis Scott picked the ight spot to stetch his sting of consecutive games with a 3-point basket to 38, helping lift Geogia Tech to an Atlantic Coast Confeence victoy ove No. 12 Duke Thusday night. "He showed me he could do a lot of things besides hit the 3-pointe," Tech coach Bobby Cemins said of Scott, who scoed nine of his 20 points in ' the final 2: 40 and filled in in the middle when Tom Hammonds sat out just ove seven minutes of the second half with fou fouls. The Yellow Jackets, 13-6 oveall and 3-2 in the ACC, wee leading when Scott took contol, getting his fluy towad the finish on six fee thows and his only 3-point basket in eight attempts. Duke, losing fo the fouth time in five games, fell to 14-4 and 4-4 despite a 27-point effot by Danny Fey. " eally thought we wee going to lose it," Cemins said. "We had a five-point lead, a seven-point lead. We wee playing ou guts out, but just couldn't get ove we wee tuning the ball ove." Coach Mike Kzyzewski had no touble pinpointing Duke's poblems: the Blue Devils made only 10 of 21 fee thows. Fences host fist (and last) home meet By CHRS FLLO Spots Wite The Note Dame and Saint May's fencing teams will keep the show on campus this weekend as they host thei only home meets of the yea on Satuday and Sunday. Satuday's action at the Joyce ACC will pit the ish against Midwest teams fom Cleveland State, Easten Michigan, Oakland Univesity, Ti State, Detoit, and Michigan, while the Belles will face a few selected teams. Sunday the ish will battle Wayne State in a stoied Midwest ivaly. Despite only one weekend of pevious competition, head coach Michael DeCicco believes that his squads ae eady fo almost anything the opposition has to offe. "f the geat fencing of the young feshmen and sophomoes holds up, then they could make me a believe of this team as a national championship contende," said DeCicco. "The big test this weekend will be how well the women do against Wayne State. 'm anxious to see how it will tun out." Last yea, the women's team finished second behind Wayne State in a vey closely contested fight fo the national championship. Beqda Leise handily defeated modeate competition in a meet held in Chicago. Additional help fom Taa Kelly could give the women enough depth to powe by opponents in thei second meet of the season. The men's team will once again povide a stong field in all thee weapons, with an excellent menageie of expeienced veteans and talented Two weeks ago, the fousome of Janice Hynes, Kistin Kalicek, Heidi Pipe, and see FENCNG, page 14 Recent ish enthusiasm is music to the eas Unde NCAA ules, the band will not be allowed to pzay duing the couse of the basketball game. A chous of 'boos' geeted those wods when they wee announced duing the second half of Note Dame's victoy ove Temple last Sunday. But it did not take long fo ish fans to come up with a much moe ceative esponse: The "Hey" chee. You know, that chee only a few people eve stand up fo unless the game is on the line. Last Sunday, eveyone was standing. And singing. "Da-DAAA-da... HEY... da-da-da, Da-DAAAda... HEY... da-da-da, Da-DAAAda... HEY... da-da-da... We'e gonna beat the heck (o othe vaiation) outta you!" My confidence in the Note Dame student body was estoed. The same students who sit down all too often and have been known to leave the bleaches empty fo weeknight games against some petty decent teams wee all on thei feet--singing. Of couse, ish fans wee not showing off a completely new talent. They hinted at this singing ability ealie in the yea at the Fiesta Bowl, by taunting West Viginia quateback Majo Hais with chants of his name, and idiculing thousands of Mountainee faithful by mocking one of thei favoite songs, "County Roads," as soon as the game was in Note Dame's contol. "County oads, take you home, to the place, you belong, West Viginia... " You get the pictue. t was a heatstopping endition. Maty Stasen Spots Edito Late that night, a West Viginia epote said she thought the behavio of the Note Dame fans was tasteless and "uncalled fo." Let's call fo it again Sunday, when the Duke Blue Devils visit the ish in the Joyce ACC fo what pomises to be an exciting basketball game. Duke fans have a lot to be poud of--a healded basketball histoy and a stong academic eputation. Note Dame is no slouch on those counts, eithe. The Duke fans also have eceived thei shae of notoiety, much like ish fans of yeas gone by. Duke fans ae cazy, and have eaned the pime seats fo Blue Devil home games. ish fans have been called "the sixth man" by NBC announce A McGuie and "the best college basketball cowd" by CBS analyst Billy Packe. Packe ates the Duke fans ight behind Note Dame's. Let's pove Packe ight Sunday. Let's make Duke second to Note Dame on the scoeboad and in the stands. Even if we ae a little off key.
