1 Volume 20, Number 11 Feb. 20, 2013 r HOT INDEX Flyers continue to soar, win 9th straight Lewis is having a stellar season and it continued on Saturday with a Great Lakes Valley Conference win over McKendree. The Flyers won their ninth consecutive game at home and are 18-5 overall and 11-4 in the conference. Jess Reinhart poured in 19 points to lead the way on a day when Lewis rolled into halftime with a commanding advantage. Reinhart also grabbed eight rebounds, blocked three shots and tallied three steals. She is averaging 14.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game on the year. Reinhart also has 15 blocks and 24 steals. Labrenthia Murdock pumped in 13 points and pulled down five rebounds. She also came up with three steals for the Flyers, who shot 37.5 percent from the field and held the Bearcats to 26.6 percent shooting from the floor. The Flyers are averaging 72.3 points per outing and holding opponents to 64.1 points per game. r HEADLINES Findlay Upsets No. 1 Ashland FINDLAY, Ohio It was a happy Valentine s Day for the University of Findlay women s basketball team, which knocked off top-ranked and undefeated Ashland University on Feb. 14 in Croy Gymnasium. Ashland s regular season winning streak was stopped at 49 games. This was Ashland s first regular season loss since the season opener at California (Pa.) where Minnesota State-Mankato stopped the Eagles, This loss also ended a 38-game regular-season winning streak against GLIAC teams and put an end to a 39-game winning streak against conference opponents. Leading by five at with 10:51 to play in the game, the Oilers went on a 7-0 run to extend their advantage to 12 at with just over 8:20 remaining. After trading a few buckets, junior guard Ashley Andrews drilled a three pointer with 6:04 left to make the score Ashland, two days after suffering its first loss of the season, bounced back on Saturday with an win over the Chargers. Senior guards Courtney Finn and Kelsey Roberson each set career scoring bests while combining for 41 points, and junior forward Jacqui Brugliera joined the Falcons 1000-point club, as Bentley University assured itself of at least a share of the Northeast-10 Conference women s basketball championship with a win over Southern New Hampshire University Saturday at the Dana Center. Finn scored 19 first-half points without missing a shot and finished with 23 points, five rebounds and four steals. Roberson connected six times from downtown for an 18-point afternoon. Bentley, ranked number one in Division II this week after top-ranked Ashland University was upended last Thursday, improved to 23-0 overall and 19-0 NE-10 with its 22nd straight home victory and its 36th in a row against Region competition. The Falcons, with three regular season games left, are three up on second-place Stonehill College, who ll they ll see next Saturday. It s the third straight year that the Falcons have had at least a share of the title and the program s 21st NE-10 regular season title in the conference s 32-year history. 1 Women s Division II Bulletin Feb. 20, 2013 Clayton St. Remains Unbeaten MONTEVALLO, Ala. The 3rd-ranked Clayton State women s basketball team kept its unbeaten streak alive at 24 Saturday, downing Montevallo in Peach Belt Conference basketball action. With the win, Clayton State improves to 24-0 overall and 17-0 in the league. The Lakers jumped out to a big lead in the first half Saturday and maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the second half for the victory. The Lakers took an 11-point lead, 16-5, at the 11:37 mark on a basket in the paint by forward Kayla Mobley. Drameka Griggs once again led the Lakers pouring in 27 points, hitting 7-of-14 from the field and 1-of-2 from 3-point territory. Benson poured in 32 points, a new career-high, and became the 20th player in program history to get to 1,000 points. She is the 52nd player in the history of the conference to reach the milestone. Benson s old career-high was 24 and she is the first player from the Falcons to score 30 or more in a game since Not only did Benson get the job done from a scoring standpoint, but she pulled down 10 rebounds as well for her fifth doubledouble of the year. Suzanna Ohlsen and Aubree Callen scored 11 points apiece for the Falcons, who are 14-8 overall and 8-6 in the conference. Mechela Barnes added 10 points while Callen grabbed eight rebounds and dished out eight assists. Andrea Vogel made her senior day a memorable one as she reached the 1,000-point mark in Urbana s win over Central State on Saturday. Vogel has been the starting center for the Blue Knights throughout her career and she became the 11th player in program history to get to 1,000 career points. She hit the 1,000-point mark at a crucial juncture in the game. With the score tied at 65-65, Vogel was fouled and hit a free throw to break the tie and put her at 1,000. She finished her day with nine points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Vogel is the program s all-time leader in blocks. Urbana got 29 points from Kate Francisco and shot 40 percent from the field. The Blue Knights, who held Central State to 39.7 percent shooting, have now won five consecutive games and are back at the.500 mark after going 8-13 in their first 21 games. Lynn University s Kira Harvey averaged 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals in victories over Barry and Rollins. She began the week with 23 points, eight boards, five assists and two steals in a win against the Buccaneers, marking the first season sweep of BU since Harvey then tallied 22 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals to help the Fighting Knights take the first season series in program history over Rollins. Clayton State senior Drameka Griggs led the 3rd-ranked and undefeated Lakers (24-0; 17-0 PBC) to two wins last week, including a victory over Georgia College that clinched Clayton State s third straight Peach Belt Conference regular season title. She averaged 24 points in the two Laker wins and extended her 20+ point total to five straight games. She scored 21 points to go along with three boards, three assists and two steals as Clayton State beat Georgia College. Griggs then poured in 27 points with five rebounds, four steals and two assists at Montevallo. The senior shot 52 percent from the field, 67 percent from three-point range and hit 86 percent from the foul line. Wayne State University (MI) senior forward had a monster week for the Warriors. Thursday s 11 point, 15 rebound performance was key to the Warriors victory over Michigan Tech. Colbert found a way to get her hands on the ball countless times down the stretch to seal that victory. The Pioneers maintain their hold on fourth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and are 12-9 overall. They are 10-7 in the conference. Brianna Terrance poured in 16 points and also racked up three steals. Micah Walker clicked for 12 points and Sarah Finley pumped in 11 points. Marlene McMillan grabbed nine rebounds and has led the team in rebounding 13 times. Cal State Bay is averaging 54.6 points per game and holding opponents to 50.7 points per outing. Terrance leads the Pioneers in scoring at 9.2 points per outing. She is shooting 49.4 percent from the floor on the year. Cal State Bay pushed the win streak to seven games on Saturday when it knocked off Humboldt State Emporia State stretched its win streak to nine games on Saturday when it kocked off Missouri Southern The Hornets led at the break but had to hold off the Lions rally attempt in the second half. Merissa Quick poured in 18 points while Rachel Hanf clicked for 13 points. Laura Patrick, who leads the team in scoring at 14.7 points per contest, pumped in 12 points for the Hornets. Hanf now has 1,114 points in her career, passing former United States Olympian Pat Roberts for 22nd all-time in scoring. Emporia State shot 52.1 percent from the field and won despite turning the ball over 25 times. The Hornets held the Lions to 44.7 percent shooting and forced 32 turnovers. No. 19 NYIT women s basketball completed the season sweep of St. Thomas Aquinas with a victory Saturday afternoon in Alumni Day. With the win, the Bears improved to 22-1 on the season and 14-1 in Coast Conference action. Out team defense was intense today and, although we struggled some in the second half, we were committed defensively to controlling the game, said head coach Anthony Crocitto. Twenty-two wins is special and clinching a home playoff game is even more special. We have some amazing goals to keep reaching for and must work hard every day throughout to achieve them. Graduate student Nikki Jo Rotolo led all players with 17 points and had seven rebounds and seven assists. Classmate Charlene Riddick added 13 points and Rebecca Lynch rounded out the top scorers with 10 points. Colo. Mesa Back on Track SILVER CITY, N.M. Colorado Mesa (22-1, 18-1 RMAC) pushed its win streak to four and road record to 9-1 beating ern New Mexico on Saturday night. CMU led from start to finish shooting 50 percent (26-52) in the game. Kelsey Sigl picked up where she left off Friday night (30 points, 10 rebounds) scoring a game high 31 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Sigl s back-to-back double-doubles on the weekend road swing, included 19 points and five rebounds in the first half. Sigl s 31 points ties a career high. Katrina Selsor finished with 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
