2 FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY SEMINOLE BASKETBALL Florida State #18 Men s Basketball Preview FSU basketball is back and your chance to be a part of the action is now. A change in the seating arrangements and non-stop action beginning an hour before tip-off will mean more energy and even more fun this season. Coach Leonard Hamilton was determined to rebuild the Seminole basketball program on a solid foundation with a plan to make FSU a contender for ACC championships and a regular selection to the NCAA Tournament. Well, his Seminoles played in the championship game of the ACC Tournament last year and earned a trip to the Big Dance, and the exciting thing is that it is just the beginning of something great. Coming off one of the top seasons in program history, FSU enters the season with more quality depth at every position than they have had during the first seven years of his tenure in Tallahassee. Anchoring the group will be 7 1 sophomore center Solomon Alabi who was named to the preseason John Wooden Award watch list as one of the nation s top players. The Seminoles return three starters and nine letter winners from the 009 team that won 5 games. Despite the fact that the roster is dominated by underclassmen (nine of the 11 players are either freshman or sophomores), Hamilton sees the relative youth of the team as a decided advantage rather than a disadvantage. There is a tremendous amount of carryover from the understanding the players were trying to absorb last year, said Hamilton. There is not a lot of teaching, re-teaching or reminding with this group. Led by All-American candidate Alabi, the Seminoles return eight players that played in at least 5 games last season. Alabi, who led the ACC in blocked shots last season, is Florida State s leading returning scorer and rebounder. Joining Alabi in the frontcourt is hardorenosed senior Ryan Reid, sophomores Chris Singleton, who earned honorable freshman All-American honors, and fear- less offensive threat Xavier Gibson, and Top 50 high school sensation freshman Terrance Shannon. Florida State s backcourt could be one of the best in the ACC and will collectively make up for the loss of All-ACC First Team selection and first round NBA Draft choice Toney Douglas, who averaged an ACC-leading 1.5 points per game in 009. Seasoned junior Derwin Kitchen, talented sophomore Luke Loucks and redshirt freshman Pierre Jordan will work together to run the point for FSU. Florida State will be more multi-dimensional at the shooting guard position with the emergence of athletic junior Jordan DeMercy and sharpshooting sophomore Deividus Dulkys, and the addition of highly touted freshman Michael Snaer. We are going to try and speed up our tempo a little more and be more aggressive in transition, said Hamilton. We want to attack the basket off the dribble and the pass and play better defensively. I really like our team and I think we are capable of playing with anybody in our league. Hamilton has always measured his words carefully in preseason but the sparkle in his eye tells everyone around the program that the Tucker Center will be rockin this year! 4 FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY SEMINOLE BASKETBALL Florida State Women s Basketball Preview The Tucker Center will be the place to be to see some of the best women s basketball in the country in Your Seminoles have become NCAA Tournament regulars, and their success has helped FSU and Tallahassee land a host site for the 1st and nd rounds of the NCAA Women s Tournament this year an event that Coach Sue Semrau and her team plan to be very much a part of again this year. Fresh off another NCAA Tournament run last year, the Florida State women s basketball team looks to continue its success in the campaign, and they have both the pedigree and roster to have an outstanding season. FSU reached the 0-win mark for the fourth time in five years last year and were awarded the highest NCAA seed in school history when they garnered a #3 seed. And the Seminoles return a player who is predicted to be one of the best in the nation. Senior forward/center Jacinta Monroe has been recognized as one of the Top 30 players in the nation by the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s (WBCA) annual Wade Watch List. Monroe led the Seminoles in scoring last season and was named to the All-ACC Second Team. The Ft. Lauderdale native set an FSU record with 84 blocks and became the school s all-time leader in the category with 5 en route to being named to the All-ACC Defensive Team. But FSU is hardly a one-player team. Monroe will be joined by fellow senior starter Alysha Harvin, who averaged 7.5 points per game last year, scoring in double figures in 11 contests. Sophomore Cierra Brevard is coming off a stellar freshman campaign that saw this native of Sandusky, Ohio, average 9.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Brevard and Monroe are set to anchor one of the top post tandems in the ACC. Providing depth behind Brevard and Monroe will be sophomore Kayli Keough, redshirt freshman Chasity Clayton and newcomer Chelsea Davis. Semrau will have to replace two of the top three-point shooters in school history, but junior Courtney Ward returns as the starting point guard for the Seminoles after dishing out an ACC-leading 170 assists. Ward and Harvin look to hold down two of the guard positions while a bevy of players could crack the starting lineup. Senior Angel Gray appeared in every game in and averaged 4. points per game. Gray, a team captain a year ago, started the first 10 games of the season and led the team in steals with 51 on the year. Junior Christian Hunnicutt will battle for the open spot as well, as she is coming off a season where she saw action in 33 contests. A torn ACL delayed the beginning of Alexa Deluzio s career, but the two-time AAU All-American will return to the floor this year with a clean bill of health and will look to replace some of the outside shooting. 7 Fellow boosters speak out: People simply don t know what a donation to Seminole Boosters does. But once they realize their contribution is the financial backbone to all men s and women s sports, they get very excited about joining. Tony Petruzzi, Tallahassee volunteer Most of the Seminole fans I ve asked to join the Boosters thought that membership is only an access pass to buy season tickets, and they don t understand that their contribution funds athletic scholarships and supports the student-athletes. They don t get that connection. I tell them, Your membership is really a means to support the 350 student-athletes on scholarship not some access fee for tickets.
