3 T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f Toledo Women s Basketball Game Notes March 10, 2010 CONTACT: Brian DeBenedictis (419) or (567) MAC West Champ Toledo Brings No. 2 Seed to Quicken Loans Arena; Sets Sight on Eighth MAC Tournament Title in School History CLEVELAND, OH - Mid-American Conference West Division champion Toledo (22-7) begins its quest to claim the 2010 MAC Tournament crown this afternoon when it battles reigning tourney winner Ball State (14-16) in Quicken Loans Arena. Tip-off time is slated for noon. The Rockets enter post-season play having won nine of their last 12 games to claim a first-round bye for the second-consecutive season and sixth time (2000, 01, 02, 03, 09, 10) overall since the event moved to Cleveland prior to UT has won a league-best 41 contests in the MAC Tournament. All-MAC candidates senior Tanika Mays, sophomore Naama Shafir and junior Melissa Goodall lead Toledo offensively, scoring 15.1, 13.7 and 9.8 points per game, respectively. Shafir currently paces the conference in assists (6.86 apg, third in the NCAA, as of March 4), while Mays is eighth in scoring and Goodall is third in field-goal percentage (53.6%). The Rockets split two contests with the No. 7 seed Cardinals this season, winning at home (Feb. 27) and dropping a decision in Worthen Arena (Jan. 17). UT has won all four previous meetings in postseason play. Mays led Toledo in the two contests with 15.5 points and 6.5 caroms per game, with Goodall (13.0 ppg) and Shafir (11.5 ppg) also scoring in double figures. BSU s Emily Maggert averaged a team-high 19.5 points vs. the Rockets, with Audrey McDonald (15.5 ppg) and Ty Ronda Benning (15.0 ppg) also registering double digits. BSU advanced to today s quarterfinals by virtue of its win over No. 10 seed Western Michigan on Saturday. The Cardinals shot 50 percent from the field, while holding the Broncos to 27.1 percent. McDonald and Benning led BSU with 13 points each. Ball State features a balanced attack with four players scoring at least 8.5 ppg led by Maggert s 17.1 ppg, 10.8 rpg and 1.0 bpg. Maggert leads the league in defensive caroms (7.10 rpg) and ranks second in overall rebounding and fourth in scoring and field-goal percentage (52.8 percent). The Cardinals are 4-11 away from home this season and have dropped six of their last seven games away from Worthen Arena. Should the Rockets make it to the semifinals, they would face the winner of No. 3 seed Kent State or No. 6 seed Central Michigan on Friday, March 12 at Noon. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. Toledo By the Numbers 1: UT ranks first in the MAC in fieldgoal percentage (43.3%), assists (16.31 apg), rebounding margin (+3.2 rpg), three-point field-goal percentage defense (29.9%) and defensive rebounds (25.90 rpg). 2: Junior Melissa Goodall finished second in MAC games in field-goal percentage (59.1 percent, 75-of-127). 3: Sophomore Naama Shafir leads the MAC and ranks third in the nation, dishing out 6.86 assists per game. 5: Toledo claimed the MAC West Division crown with a 12-4 league ledger, its fifth title in school history (1998, 99, 2001, 03, 10). 6: The Rockets have secured a firstround bye in the MAC Tournament on six occasions (2000, 01, 02, 03, 09, 10) since the post-season tourney moved to Cleveland. 9: Senior Tanika Mays has scored at least 20 points in a team-high nine games this season, including 20 points at Ball State on Jan : UT is 16-6 all time in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament, including 3-0 against Ball State in the second round. 84: Naama Shafir led the league with 84 free throws and shot 85.7 percent (84-of-98) from the charity stripe, second-highest mark in the MAC. 44: Over the last seven contests, UT has posted a plus-44 margin ( , 6.3 boards per game) on the glass. 72.8: Toledo is tallying 72.8 points in road contests this season, shooting 45.1 percent from the field, including 37.9 percent from three-point range. 137: Junior Jessica Williams ranks tied for fifth in UT annals in career threepoint field-goal percentage (37.7%) and ninth in triples made (137). TOLEDO SETS SIGHT FOR 13TH AP- PEARANCE IN MAC TOURNAMENT FINALS: UT will be searching for its 13th appearance in the MAC Tournament Finals, but first since the 2001 postseason. Toledo has advanced to the tourney championship game in 1984, 89, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 2000 and 01 (7-5 mark) in school history. GIVING CHASE: Toledo owns seven MAC Tournament crowns, second most in league history. March 11, 2008 Revisited Ta Yani Clark scored a career-high 25 points and paced Toledo to a victory over Ball State in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament. Clark tied a then school tourney record with five three-point field goals and finished 10-of-14 from the floor. After 15 points in the first half, she made four straight shots to start the second period that gave the Rockets a lead they would not relinquish. UT also received tremendous effort from Lisa Johnson (15 pts., 4 stls.) and Tamesha Scotton (11 pts., 8 rbs., 2 blks.) to eliminate the West Division co-champs. With four minutes left in regulation, the Cardinals pulled within two points and then made a defensive stop. But UT s Olivia Terry stole the ball out of Porchia Green s hands from behind. Scotton missed a shot on the ensuing possession, but Johnson went untouched to the offensive glass and made the putback. Scotton, a 44 percent foul shooter, made three of four free throws over the next two minutes and UT held off the Cardinals. Mays Doing it All for the Rockets in Senior Tanika Mays emerged as UT s go-to player last season and that pattern has continued through the first 29 games in Mays is tops on the team in scoring (15.1 ppg), rebounding (7.4 rpg), minutes per game (30.9 mpg) and three-point field-goal percentage (40.4%), as well as ranks third in blocks (12, 0.44 bpg) and steals (36, 1.33 spg). The two-time co-captain is also third in free-throw percentage, shooting 77.4 percent (89-of-115). She finished in the Top 5 in four categories, including second in three-point field-goal percentage (48.1%) and fifth in scoring. A season ago, Mays averaged team highs in points (12.5 ppg), rebounds (6.3 rpg), steals (2.5 spg) and minutes played (31.3 mpg), garnering second-team allleague honors. Floor General... You Go Girl Sophomore Naama Shafir is averaging 13.7 points, a conference-best 6.9 assists (third in the NCAA, as of March 4), 3.6 rebounds and a team-high 2.1 steals in 30.8 minutes per game in She currently ranks first in the MAC in assists, fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.34), fifth in steals, ninth in free-throw percentage (79.8%), 13th in scoring and 22nd in minutes played. The Hoshaya, Israel native has scored in double figures 20 times this season, second-best total on the team. The preseason All-MAC West Division squad honoree totaled 21 points and a game-high eight helpers in a career-best 41 minutes at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, March 2. The second-year Rocket has dished out at least six assists in a contest 19 times this season and ranks tied for third in Toledo annals in assists in a single season (191), as well as 10th in career assists (339). Shafir preceded that performance against the Eagles with eight points, a game-high six helpers, five boards and a game-high three steals in 36 minutes vs. Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 27. Senior Tanika Mays led four Rockets (22-7, 12-4 MAC) in double figures with 23 points and 12 rebounds, posting her team-best seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore Naama Shafir contributed 21 points with a gamehigh eight assists, senior Allie Clifton had 13 points and junior Melissa Goodall finished with 11 points. EMU was paced by Tavelyn James career-high 40 points, while Cassie Schrock and Chenise Miller each had 11 points, snapping UT s three-game win streak against its division foe. The deciding factors in the contest were free throws and turnovers. The home team finished 31-of-45 (75.6 percent) from the charity stripe, compared to 19-of-25 (76.0 percent) for Toledo. UT was also guilty of 25 miscues, which the Eagles translated into 27 points, while EMU turned the ball over only 13 times and the visitors were able to tally just 15 points off them. Clifton Returns to Starting Rotation Despite Reoccurring Foot Injury... And Contributes Senior Allie Clifton returned to the starting lineup at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, March 2 after missing three of the previous five games with a reoccurring foot injury. Clifton played 27 minutes against the Eagles and was credited with a MAC-season high 13 points, five boards and two assists. Clifton preceded that performance against the Eagles with four points and eight caroms in only 12 minutes vs. Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 27. The three-year co-captain, who is Rockets Record by Margin of Victory/Defeat still listed as day-to-day, has missed 25 contests (six in , eight in , five in , six in ) in three-plus seasons at Toledo due to injury. Clifton is currently suffering from plantar fasciitis and is running differently to compensate for the pain. For the season, Clifton has started 22 of 23 games, averaging 6.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 20.3 minutes per contest. Toledo featured three players averaging double figures in league action led by Tanika Mays at 17.2 points per game, fifth-best in the MAC. Naama Shafir (13.3 ppg, 16th in the league) and Melissa Goodall (12.7 ppg, 19th in the league) also scored in double digits. UT was one of only two schools (Central Michigan) to have three players in the Top 20. The Rockets defense also ranked near the top of the MAC in field-goal percentage defense (2nd, 36.9%), scoring defense (3rd, 62.8 ppg) and threepoint field-goal percentage defense (4th, 30.8%). 17 Toledo Women s Basketball Game Notes - page 15 Head Coach Tricia Cullop On April 28, 2008, Tricia Cullop came to the University of Toledo with the daunting task of rebuilding a Mid-American Conference powerhouse. Fast forward less than two years and Cullop finds her squad hanging another banner from the rafters inside Savage Arena. Considering that the Rockets experienced five-consecutive losing campaigns prior to Cullop s arrival, UT s quick turnaround has truly been a testament to her coaching abilities and team play. So far in , the Rockets have claimed the outright MAC West Division title for the first time since , as well as secured a first-round bye in the league tourney for the second-consecutive season. Toledo also led the MAC in attendance for the 20th-consecutive season, averaging 2,786 fans per contest, including a MAC oncampus record 5,825 fans vs. Bowling Green on Jan. 30, In her rookie campaign, Cullop guided the Rockets, picked to finish last in the West Division, to the league s third-best MAC record and an appearance in the semifinals of the postseason tourney. The Midnight Blue & Gold finished 11-5 in league play and wrapped up the year with a mark of For her efforts, Cullop was selected as the MAC co-coach of the Year, sharing the top honor with Bowling Green s Curt Miller. In the classroom, the Rockets produced and team GPAs in the fall and spring semesters with a total of seven players making the Dean s List. Spearheading the academic surge was Lisa Johnson, who earned Academic All-MAC recognition. But Cullop is not be satisfied with finishing second in the division and advancing just to the semifinals. Her sights are firmly focused on winning a MAC championship and rejoining the elite programs in the region. The Rockets have also been very active in the Toledo community during Cullop s short time at UT, helping with projects such as Habitat for Humanity, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Sponsor a Family for Christmas. Cullop came to Toledo in 2008 from the University of Evansville where she coached for eight seasons and built the Purple Aces into one of the top programs in the Missouri Valley Conference. She guided her teams to a record over her last four campaigns, including in league action. In , Evansville was 21-12, 13-5 in the Missouri Valley, en route to a share of the school s first regular-season MVC title and a berth into the WNIT. For her achievements, Cullop was named the Missouri Valley Coach of the Year. Cullop, who was a four-year letterwinner as a player at Purdue, took over the head coaching position at Evansville in 2000 following stints as an assistant coach at Radford, Long Beach State and Xavier. After an initial rebuilding phase, Cullop steadily built the program into a consistent winner. Since the season, the Purple Aces tallied records of 17-11, 16-13, and Cullop s 123 career wins ranks her second all-time at Evansville, just one win behind former coach Bill Barnett. In her eight seasons at the helm, her teams finished in the top half of the Missouri Valley six times, and defeated non-conference opponents Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati and Temple. Cullop came to Evansville in April, 2000 after four years as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Xavier University. While at Xavier, she helped the Musketeers to their best record in school history (26-5 in ), and the school s first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament championship. Xavier captured two NCAA Tournament bids and one WNIT berth in her four years as an assistant coach. Cullop also had assistant coaching stops at Radford and Long Beach State prior to joining the Xavier staff. In her two seasons at Radford, the Highlanders earned their first two NCAA Tournament berths in school history. All told, Cullop has been a part of seven NCAA Tournaments and two WNIT berths in her 18 years as a player and coach at the collegiate level. As a player, Cullop was a four-year letterwinner at Purdue where she was part of three-straight NCAA Tournament teams ( , and ) and won Purdue s first-ever Big Ten championship. She was team captain in and a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection under head coach Lin Dunn (currently head coach with the Indiana Fever of the WNBA). Cullop was named the Purdue Mortar Board Female Student-Athlete of the Year in A native of Bicknell, IN, Cullop was a 1989 High School All-American at North Knox High School. She was also a member of the North Squad in the 1991 U.S. Sports Festival. Cullop earned a B.A. in communications from Purdue in She is the daughter of Theodore and Jannette Cullop, and has two sisters, Tammy and Tracy. The Rockets defense, meanwhile, clamped down on the Mastodons (2-6), holding the visitors to a miniscule 28.8 percent shooting from the field, including an even better 14.3 percent from beyond the arc. A season ago, IPFW drained a season-high 11 triples and shot 41.0 percent from the field en route to a victory over UT in Fort Wayne.
