Noon Carolina And Duke Square Off In Coastal Division Battle Looking to extend its current five game win streak, Carolina faces No. 24 Duke on Saturday, Nov. 30, in what may be the most meaningful UNC-Duke football game in nearly two decades. The 100th meeting between the two institutions will be televised on ESPN2 at noon. It is the Tar Heels ninth game at either noon or 12:30 p.m. this season. Carolina enters the game 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the ACC. Duke is 9-2 overall and 5-2 in league action. Carolina is just the sxith team since the regularseason expanded to 12 games in 2006 to start the season 1-5 and make a bowl game. Only one Rutgers in 2008 came from a BCS conference. The turnaround is similar to the 2001 season when UNC opened with three losses, but rebounded to win five straight and make a bowl game. Coastal Division Implications The Coastal Division title is still up for grabs entering Saturday s game. If Duke wins, the Blue Devils will win the Coastal outright and secure a spot in the ACC Championship game on Dec. 7. If Carolina wins, the Tar Heels will earn a share of the division title for the second straight season with a 5-3 record. Regardless of the outcome, Duke will finish no worse than a tie for the Coastal Division and the possibility exists for a five-way tie between Carolina, Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami and Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech has already completed its league schedule with a 5-3 record. Miami needs a win at Pitt and Virginia Tech must get past Virginia to also improve to 5-3. A Look At Last Week Carolina scored a school-record 80 points and became bowl eligible with an win over ODU. Quick Hits More than 10,000 North Carolina elementary school kids and their familes will be in attendance at the sold out Duke game as part of the athletic department s Academic All-Stars program. Of Carolina s 47 total touchdowns this season, 39 have been scored by freshmen or sophomores, including the last 23 in a row. Carolina is looking to extend its current win streak to six games Saturday. The last time Carolina won six in a row came in 1997 when the Tar Heels won the first eight games of the year. Carolina has not closed out a regular season with six consecutive wins since 1972 (won last seven of the regular season and the bowl game) DE Kareem Martin ranks fourth in the country in tackles for loss and fifth in the nation in sacks. Through 11 games, he has posted 19.0 tackles for loss and 11.0 sacks. He is just five shy of Julius Peppers single-season school record of 24 TFL in QB Marquise Williams has been responsible for 18 touchdowns QB Marquise Williams this year - 13 passing, four rushing and one receiving. Williams tossed a school-record tying five TD passes last week vs. ODU. Ebron has 774 yards receiving and is 97 yards shy of the ACC single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end, set by Maryland s Vernon Davis with 871 in Ebron has 50 catches and needs just five more to move into second place on the ACC single-season chart for catches by a tight end. Freshman Ryan Switzer has tied the single-season ACC record with four punt return touchdowns. All four have come in the last three games vs. Virginia, Pitt (2) and ODU. The NCAA single-season record is five by Chad Owens of Hawaii in Switzer has also tied the NCAA record for consecutive games with a punt return touchdown at three. Carolina is second in the country in punt returns with a average. Carolina is the only school in the country with four punt returns for touchdowns. Carolina is limiting opponents to 3.4 yards per punt return, which ranks 10th in the country. The Tar Heels have allowed just 55 total punt return yards, 23 of which came on one return by NC State. Fourteen different Tar Heels have scored at least one touchdown this season. Nine of those 14 are either freshmen or sophomores (five are true freshmen). WR Quinshad Davis has already caught 106 passes in his first two seasons. 2 All-America Candidate Eric Ebron Sets School Marks All-America candidate Eric Ebron leads the team with 50 catches for 774 yards and has three touchdowns. His catches and yards are a single-season school record, bettering the marks he set last year. He also holds the UNC record for career catches (100) and receiving yards (1,606) by a tight end. Ebron is ranked as the No. 12 overall player on ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper s Big Board. He is No. 14 on ESPN s Todd McShay s list. Both have him as the top tight end in the country. Ebron had three catches for 73 yards, including a 58-yarder, in the win at Pittsburgh. He left the game in the second half with a shoulder injury, but later returned and caught a pass. Ebron made a season-low two catches against Virginia, but those catches established the UNC career record for catches by a tight end with 96. He came into the game tied with Zack Pianalto, who caught 94 from The last time a tight end led Carolina in receptions in a season was Mike Chatham with 20 in The only tight ends to ever lead the Tar Heels in receptions were Chatham (1979, 1980), Bob Loomis (1978), Brooks Williams (1977) and Tony Blanchard (1969). Ebron was named a first-team midseason All- America by Phil Steele and a second-team pick by SI.com and CBSsports.com. Ebron hauled in a career-high eight catches for a career-high 199 yards and his third touchdown of the season in Carolina s loss to No. 10 Miami to earn Mackey Award national tight end of the week honors. His 199 yards are a single-game UNC record for receiving yards by a tight end and the sixth-most by any Carolina player. The previous mark was 144 yards, set by Tony Blanchard against Wake Forest in Ebron scored on a 71-yard catch and run in the first quarter, his eighth career touchdown. Ebron leads all ACC tight ends in both receptions per game (4.5) and yards receiving per game (70.4). In the overall ACC rankings, he is eighth in receptions per game and 10th in receiving yards per game. Nationally, Ebron is ranked second among tight ends in receiving yards per game (70.4) and second in receptions per game (4.5) behind only Texas Tech s Jace Amaro. Ebron caught six passes for 108 yards and a touchdown against Georgia Tech. The touchdown, a one-handed 19-yard reception in the second quarter, was featured on SportsCenter s Top 10 Plays. Ebron finished with six catches for 70 yards and a touchdown at Virginia Tech. His scoring grab was a spectacular catch in traffic in the second quarter. Ebron caught a career-high nine passes for 70 yards (his previous high was eight against Miami) in the win at NC State. Ebron caught four passes for 67 yards and had two rushing attempts for seven yards against Boston College. Those were the first rushing attempts of his collegiate career. Sophomore quarterback Marquise Williams completed 20 of 27 attempts for 409 yards and five touchdowns. Duke won at Wake Forest, 28-21, rallying from an early 14-0 deficit. Ebron To Enter 2014 NFL Draft North Carolina junior tight end Eric Ebron has elected to forego his final year of eligibility and enter the 2014 NFL Draft following UNC s bowl game. A native of Greensboro, N.C., Ebron leads the Tar Heels with 50 receptions for 774 yards and has three touchdowns. I ve had a great time in Chapel Hill and I appreciate everything Coach Fedora and the coaching staff has done for me, said Ebron. Coming to Carolina allowed me to develop as both a person and a football player. It was one of the best decisions I ve ever made. I look forward to finishing the season with my teammates and then moving on to the next level. Ebron holds the UNC single-season and career records for catches and receiving yards by a tight end. Ebron is a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award, which is presented to the nation s top tight end. He was named the Mackey Award national tight end of the week and his 199 yards are a single-game UNC record for receiving yards by a tight end and the sixth-most by any Carolina player. Jonathan Cooper Jersey To Be Honored North Carolina s Jonathan Cooper will officially have his jersey honored Saturday at the Duke game. Cooper qualified for recognition within Kenan Stadium after earning consensus first-team All-Amercia honors last fall. A native of Wilmington, N.C., Cooper started a Tar Heel record 48 games. As a senior, he led Carolina to an 8-4 record and a tie for first place in the ACC Coastal Division. He earned first-team All-America honors from Walter Camp, FWAA, AFCA, AP, ESPN.com, SI, Phil Steele, NBC.com and CBSsports.com. Cooper earned firstteam All-ACC honors in 2012 and second-team all-league accolades in 2010 and Cooper won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which is presented to the best offensive lineman in the ACC. He broke the record of 625 that he set in Carolina s first Jacobs recipient in 25 years. He also was one of three finalists for the Outland Trophy as the nation s top interior lineman. He anchored an offensive line that helped Carolina set single-season scoring, passing yardage and total offense school records. The Arizona Cardinals selected Cooper with the seventh pick in the first round in the 2013 NFL Draft. He earned an ACC Postgraduate Honorary Scholarship and won UNC s Jim Tatum Award, which is presented to the athlete who performed with distinction in his or her sport and contributed to the University through constructive participation in co-curricular activities. Cooper, Cannizzaro To Be Presented Patterson Medal Jonathan Cooper and women s lacrosse student-athlete Kara Cannizzaro will be presented with the Patterson Medal during Saturday s game vs. Duke. The Patterson medal is the most prestigious athletic department award presented at UNC. Cooper was a consensus first-team All-America last year and helped lead the Tar Heels to an 8-4 record and a tie for the Coastal Division title. Cannizzaro led the Tar Heels to the school s first NCAA championship in women s lacrosse. The losses were to Georgia Tech (2012), East Carolina (2013) and Miami (2013). Under Larry Fedora, Carolina is averaging 45.7 points at Kenan Stadium. Martin Named Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week after Pitt Performance Kareem Martin was named The Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week for his standout performance at Pitt on Nov. 16. The award, presented by Generation UCAN, is selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation. Martin recorded eight tackles, 3.5 quarterback sacks and forced two fumbles (recovering one) as the Tar Heels defeated Pittsburgh, Martin is the second UNC player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors, joining former Tar Heel defensive back Kendric Burney (Nov. 15, 2009). Academic All-Stars: Program Honors Elementary School Students The University of North Carolina athletic department has partnered with elementary schools across the state to recognize students that exhibit exceptional academic aptitude and character. The newly created Academic All-Stars program invited participating elementary schools to select two outstanding students in each grade (total of per school) to be recognized at a Carolina football game for their academic success. Each of the selected students received four tickets to either the Old Dominion (Nov. 23) or Duke (Nov. 30) home football game. The students will receive a certificate to honor their accomplishments and will be publicly recognized during the game. Former head coach Carl Torbush announced his retirement as linebackers coach at Liberty University in the off-season but then was hired in early summer as the new head coach at East Tennessee State. ETSU discontinued its football program in 2003 but will return to the field in 2015 in the Southern Conference. It is the Tar Heels longest winning streak since a five-game win streak in Carolina is now bowl eligible and will compete in a postseason game for the first time since Carolina set a school record for points with 80. The previous high was also set under head coach Larry Fedora when the Tar Heels had 66 last year vs. Idaho. Carolina s previous high this season was 45 vs. Virginia. Carolina s 80 points are the second-highest total ever by an ACC team. Clemson set the ACC record with an win over Wake Forest in Carolina set a school record with 721 total yard of offense, breaking the old mark of 714 against Maryland in The 721 total yards ranks as the 11th-highest total in ACC history. Florida State holds the record at 858. The Tar Heels also set a school record for the highest average yards per play. Carolina finished with 68 plays for 721 yards, an average of 10.6 per play. The 10.6 average per play is an all-time ACC high. Carolina s 11 touchdowns are a school record and one shy of the ACC record of 12 set by Clemson against Wake Forest in The previous school mark of 10 touchdowns by UNC was set vs. Virginia Medical in 1914 and Wake Forest in Five of the 11 touchdowns came on plays of 50 yards or longer, including a 56-yard reception by Quinshad Davis, a 57-yard reception by Ryan Switzer, a 99-yard kickoff return by T.J. Logan, a 63-yard run by Logan and a 64-yard punt return by Switzer. All 11 Carolina touchdowns were scored by either freshmen or sophomores. Of Carolina s last 47 touchdowns, 39 have been scored by freshmen or sophomores, including the last 23 in a row. The Tar Heels tied the ACC single-game record for extra points by kicking with 11. Florida State also had 11 against N.C. State in Eleven different Tar Heel players caught passes, led by Ryan Switzer with five for 118 yards and two touchdowns and Quinshad Davis with four receptions for 124 yards and one touchdown. Four different receivers had touchdown catches. T.J. Thorpe and Kendrick Singleton also had scoring catches today. Quinshad Davis now has 106 catches in his two seasons at Carolina for 1,468 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is now tied with Art Weiner for 14th place in career receptions. Davis is now tied for sixth place on the school s all-time touchdown reception list. Four other players also have 14 scoring catches. Davis finished with four catches for 124 yards and a touchdown. It is his second 100-yard game this season and fourth of his career. He had 111 yards on five catches earlier this season vs. ECU. Switzer has now returned 20 punts for 414 yards and four touchdowns this season. That ties the ACC record for touchdowns on punt returns in a season. Steve Suter of Maryland also had four in His four touchdowns on punt returns are the most in the nation this year. Switzer is averaging 20.7 yards per return this year. Switzer has now scored in four of the last five games. He scored on a 43-yard pass, a 57-yard pass and a 64-yard punt return. Dating back to the Pitt game, Switzer scored five times in nine touches after making the 57-yard catch. Switzer tied the NCAA record for consecutive games with a punt return touchdown at three. He has scored four times on punt returns in the last three games. In the win over Pitt, Carolina posted seven sacks, 12 tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries, five pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. The seven sacks are the most since posting seven against ECU in It is the most in an ACC game since recording 10 vs. Wake Forest in The Tar Heels limited the Panthers to 46 yards rushing and 359 total yards. Carolina s defense had three sacks, two additional tackles for losses, seven quarterback hurries, seven pass breakups and two interceptions in a win over Virginia. Carolina allowed just 10 points in a victory over Boston College. The 10 points are the fewest allowed by the Tar Heels since a 66-0 win over Idaho on Sept. 29, It is the lowest scoring output by an ACC opponent since a win at Virginia on Oct. 16, In the win over Boston College, Carolina converted 8 of 16 on third down and held the Eagles to 5 of 16 on third down and 0 for 1 on fourth down. NC State coverted just 6 of 17 third down attempts and was 0 for 1 on fourth down. In the last two games, opponents have converted just 33 percent of third down chances. Carolina s defense allowed just 59 passing yards against BC, the fewest by an opponent since Clemson threw for 37 yards in a UNC win in Death Valley on Nov. 15, The previous low passing yardage figure this year was 104 by Georgia Tech. 8 Marquise Williams Takes Over At QB Sophomore QB Marquise Williams has taken over as the starting quarterback with the season-ending injury to Bryn Renner. Williams had seen his playing time increase even before Renner s injury and had provided a spark to the UNC offense. Williams has completed 90 of 148 attempts for 1,304 yards and 13 touchdowns, while rushing 86 times for 386 yards and four touchdowns. Williams has been the Tar Heels leading rusher in four of the last seven games, and had a career-best 79-yard effort in the win at Pitt. Williams scored on runs of 16 and 10 yards in the first half of Carolina s win at Pitt. He became the first UNC quarterback to rush for two touchdowns in a game since Darian Durant in a 38-3 victory at Clemson in Williams first touchdown came on Carolina s second drive of the game and occurred two plays after he converted a 4th-and-9 with a 15-yard pass to Switzer. On the 76-yard scoring drive, Williams completed 4 of 6 pass attempts for 35 yards and ran seven times for 31 yards. Wearing No. 2 to honor Renner, Williams passed, ran and caught touchdowns in a win over Virginia. He completed 15 of 28 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start. He also rushed 16 times for 46 yards and a score and caught a 29-yard touchdown pass. He became the first Carolina quarterback to catch a touchdown pass since Kevin Anthony in Williams made his first career start at Virginia Tech in place of starter Bryn Renner who was out with a foot injury. Williams completed 23 of 35 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Williams rushed 18 times for team-high 56 yards against the Hokies, which was the most rushing yards by a UNC quarterback since Williams had 61 yards last season against Idaho. It also marked the first time a quarterback led the team in rushing since Durant vs. Duke in Williams completed 4 of 7 passes for 98 yards and touchdown against Miami. His 71-yard scoring pass to Eric Ebron was his longest career completion and Carolina s longest play from scrimmage in Williams also rushed five times for 27 yards. Williams rushed seven times for a team-high 55 yards and a touchdown in the win over Boston College. He also completed 4 of 8 passes for 55 yards and a touchdown, his fifth of the season. Williams led UNC s ground attack in the win at NC State with 51 yards on 17 carries. Williams had 17 carries no other Tar Heel had more than five. Williams also completed 8 of 15 pass attempts for 92 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to Quinshad Davis. Bryn Renner Outstanding Career Ends With Shoulder Injury Senior quarterback Bryn Renner had season-ending surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at UNC Hospitals by Dr. Alex Creighton. Surgery was required to repair a detached labrum and fracture in his shoulder. Considered by many NFL Draft analysts one of the top five senior quarterbacks in 2013, Renner was the Tar Heels starting signal caller for three seasons. In 2013, Renner completed 152 of 231 attempts for 1,765 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. Renner finished his career with 64 career touchdown passes, which ranks second in school history. He finished four shy of UNC s all-time mark of 68 set by Darian Durant from Renner had 8,221 career passing yards, good for 20th all-time in the ACC. He moved past Georgia Tech s Reggie Ball (8,128) in the win over NC State. He is just the third player in Carolina history to reach 8,000 career passing yards. Renner completed 15 of 22 pass attempts for 124 yards in the win over NC State. He also scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. It was his second rushing TD of the season and fourth of his career. Renner completed 18 of 21 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns against Boston College. His completion percentage of.857 (18 for 21) was the second-highest of his career. He was 22 for 23 (.957) in his first start in 2011 against James Madison. Renner completed 28 of 36 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown against Miami. It was his second straight game with 28 completions, which equaled his third-most in any game. Renner established a new single-game UNC record for consecutive completions with 15 against Miami, breaking the previous record of 14 set by Kevin Anthony vs. Wake Forest in 1985, Jason Stanicek vs. NC State in 1992 and Renner against James Madison in Renner also holds the overall record with 19 straight completions across two games in Renner completed 28 of 46 passes for a career-high 366 yards and three touchdowns against East Carolina. It was the 10th career game in which Renner has thrown at least three touchdown passes. It was also his 10th career game with 300 or more passing yards, extending his own school record. Renner completed 23 of 34 pass attempts for 339 yards and a touchdown in a win over MTSU. Renner saw his career-best streak of pass attempts without an interception snapped at 140 in the second quarter vs. MTSU. The school record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception is 154 (Oscar Davenport, ). Renner threw for more than 3,000 yards in 2011 (3,086) and 2012 (3,356). Renner and T.J. Yates are the only two Carolina quarterbacks to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season and Renner is the only player to do it twice. In 2012, Renner completed 276 of 422 attempts for 3,356 yards and a singleseason school record 28 touchdowns in 12 games. In his first year as a starter in 2011, he accumulated 3,086 passing yards in 13 games. Switzer Playing a Starring Role Freshman WR Ryan Switzer has played every game this season, but has made his presence felt the most in Carolina s current five-game win streak. Switzer s 85-yard punt return against Virginia equals the fourth-longest punt return for a touchdown in UNC history. It was the first career touchdown return for Switzer, who has also thrown for a touchdown and scored via reception in Switzer had his first collegiate touchdown catch, a 13-yard scoring strike from Bryn Renner, in the home win against Boston College. The following week, he tossed a 59-yard touchdown pass to Quinshad Davis at NC State. It was Switzer s first career touchdown pass. He is the second wide receiver to throw a touchdown pass this year. Quinshad Davis has thrown two - against ECU and Virginia. Four different Tar Heels have thrown scoring passes this year. Switzer Leads The Nation Freshman Ryan Switzer is the only player in the country with four punt return touchdowns. Eight other players have returned two for touchdowns. 9 Switzer is seven yards shy of Bosley Allen s single-season school record for most punt return yards. Allen had 421 in 2000 on 28 returns. Switzer has returned 20 punts for 414 yards and has two games remaining. Quinshad Davis All-ACC candidate Quinshad Davis leads the team with nine touchdown receptions and is second on the squad with 45 catches for 692 yards. He also has thrown two touchdown passes this year - one against ECU and another against Virginia. Davis has 106 catches in his first two seasons. Only Hakeem Hicks (113) has caught as many passes in his first two seasons as Davis. Davis was responsible for a pair of touchdowns against Virginia, scoring on an 8-yard pass from Williams in the first quarter and throwing a 29-yard pass to Williams later in the quarter. He finished with five catches for 65 yards. In two games against Virginia, he has 21 catches for 243 yards. In 2012, he caught 16 for 178 yards After posting just eight catches in the first three games of the season, Davis has 33 in his last seven contests. Davis has 13 career touchdown receptions, including five in 2012 and eight in He now ranks 10th on the single-season receiving TD chart at UNC. Four players are tied for sixth with 14. Davis caught two passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns in the win over NC State. He caught a fade pass from QB Marquise Williams in the corner of the end zone in the first quarter to cut the Wolfpack lead to He later caught a 59-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter from WR Ryan Switzer. Davis had a season-high eight catches for 81 yards against Miami. In the loss at Virginia Tech, Davis caught a season-high six passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. Davis had five catches for 111 yards and a touchdown against ECU. He also threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Thorpe on his first career pass attempt. It was his fourth career 100-yard receiving game and his first such-game this season. A year ago, the 6-4, 205-pound wide receiver set UNC freshman records with 61 receptions and 776 receiving yards. A native of Gaffney, S.C., Davis added approximately 20 pounds in the offseason without losing any speed. Last year against Virginia, Davis finished with Carolina single-game freshman records of 16 catches and 178 yards. The previous records were nine catches (Octavus Barnes vs. Texas, 1994 Sun Bowl) and 171 yards (Hakeem Nicks at Notre Dame, 2006). The 16 catches match the ACC record for all players, tied most recently by Wake Forest s Michael Campanaro. Davis is one of six ACC players with 16 receptions in a game. Davis concluded the 2012 season second in ACC history for catches by a freshman and fourth in receiving yards by a freshman. Howard Bugging Opposing Defenses Freshman wide receiver Bug Howard has elevated his game over the last few weeks and currently ranks second on the team with four receiving touchdowns. He is fourth on the squad with 22 receptions for 278 yards. Thirteen of those 22 receptions have come during Carolina s current five-game win streak. Howard caught five passes for a season-high 72 yards at NC State, including an acrobatic 24-yarder in the final quarter that led to the game-clinching touchdown run by Logan. Sean Tapley Junior WR Sean Tapley has 16 catches for 211 yards in He caught four passes for a career-high 93 yards in a victory over Middle Tennessee. The next week at Georgia Tech he two catches for 36 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown reception. Tapley also returns kickoffs for the Tar Heels and ranks third in the ACC with a 24.7-yard average. Running Game Picks Up With the early departure of standout tailback Giovani Bernard to the NFL following the 2012 season, Carolina turned the running game over to sophomore Romar Morris, senior A.J. Blue and freshmen Khris Francis and T.J. Logan. A.J. BLUE Blue, who Fedora describes as the team s best leader, was second on the team in rushing a year ago with 433 yards and nine touchdowns. He also had nine receptions and scored a touchdown. He and Bernard (19) combined to set a single-season school record for most touchdowns by a pair of teammates. Blue is a powerful runner who made his first career start at tailback at Wake Forest after Bernard was injured in the season opener. Blue came into the game with 210 career rushing yards, but gained a career-best 106 on 19 carries against the Deacs. His previous single-game high was 39 yards against Elon in the previous week. Blue played as a true freshman in 2009 as a wildcat quarterback, redshirted in 2010 and rushed for 138 yards in backup duty in He also got the start at Louisville and finished with 43 yards on seven carries, a 6.1 average. In 2013, Blue has a team-high 73 attempts for 292 yards and a touchdown. Blue rushed eight times for 25 yards and scored his first touchdown of the season against Boston College. Blue had 11 career touchdowns entering the season, including 10 last year when he combined with Giovani Bernard (19) for a schoolrecord 29 touchdowns (most for a pair of teammates). ROMAR MORRIS This season, Morris has 59 rushes for 280 yards (4.7 avg.) and three rushing touchdowns. Morris scored his first two touchdowns of the season against Middle Tennessee, a 26-yard scamper in the first quarter and a 1-yard plunge in the second. Morris gained 46 rushing yards on 10 carries in addition to two catches for five yards. Morris scored his third touchdown of the season, a 4-yard rush in the first quarter against Georgia Tech. He finished the game with 54 rushing yards on 11 carries. He did not play in Carolina s loss to ECU. Morris is a speedy back who can also return kicks. He rushed for 386 yards and was effective in the passing game last year, making 12 catches for 204 yards (17.0 avg.) in He scored twice on the ground and twice through the air. A native of Salisbury, N.C., Morris was the named the top athlete in the state as a senior and redshirted in He is a member of the Tar Heels track team and ran the fifth-fastest 60-meter dash time (6.85 seconds) in school history during the indoor season. KHRIS FRANCIS True Freshman TB Khris Francis has 50 carries for 200 yards on the season. He saw his first collegiate action against Middle Tennessee and gained 42 yards GOHEELS.COM 9

10 on 10 carries. He scored his first career touchdown in the fourth quarter against Virginia, a 15-yard catch-and-run from Williams. Francis also rushed six times for 35 yards. Francis scored his first career rushing touchdown on a 28-yard run vs. Old Dominion. T.J. LOGAN True Freshman T.J. Logan has 62 carries for 364 yards and four touchdowns this season. He also has seven catches for 117 yards. Logan saw his first career action in the loss at Virginia Tech and had five carries for 25 yards and one reception for eight yards. He did not play in the first four games due to a knee injury. Logan made his first collegiate start in just his second game of the season (missed the first four due to injury) and gained 61 yards on 16 carries and had two catches for 18 yards. Logan scored his first career touchdown in the win at NC State on a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter to give the Tar Heels a lead. Logan had 43 yards on five carries, including four attempts for 30 yards in the fourth quarter. Logan averaged 8.6 yards per carry. Tar Heels Rush For Season-High vs. ODU The Tar Heels rushed for a season-high 312 yards in an win over ODU, led by freshman T.J. Logan s career-best 137-yard effort. QB Marquise Williams had 60 yards, followed by Charles Brunson with 54 and Khris Francis with 12. Noting the Tar Heels Offense Carolina has posted more than 500 yards of total offense seven times in 23 games under Larry Fedora, including a school-record 721 yards vs. ODU in UNC has gained at least 400 yards in 18 of Fedora s 23 games as head coach. The five games Carolina has been held under 400 yards came this season at South Carolina, at Georgia Tech, at Virginia Tech, vs. Boston College and at Pitt. Carolina has scored 40 or more points in nine of 23 games under head coach Larry Fedora. The Tar Heels gained 511 total offense yards in a victory over Middle Tennessee on Sept. 7. Since 2012, Carolina is averaging 45.7 points per game at Kenan Stadium (13 games) and 25.4 points per game on the road (10 games). Kareem Martin Senior Kareem Martin is the headliner on North Carolina s defense. He currently has 70 tackles and is ranked fourth in the country with 19.0 tackles for loss and fifth in the nation with 11.0 sacks. Martin recorded eight tackles, 3.5 sacks for 34 yards, forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble, broke up a pass and had two quarterback hurries in the win over Pitt. In the first half alone, he had six tackles, three sacks and forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Travis Hughes. For his efforts, he was named the Walter Camp Football Foundationa National Defensive Player of the Week. Martin registered a career-high 10 tackles, including seven solo stops, against Georgia Tech. Martin recorded eight tackles, 3.5 quarterback sacks and forced two fumbles (recovering one) to earn Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week in Carolina s win at Pittsburgh. Martin had eight tackles, including four for losses of 18 yards and a 10-yard sack, against Miami. He also had two quarterback hurries. In the win at NC State, Martin made eight tackles, including three tackles for losses of 11 yards, one of which was a 7-yard sack. He also forced a fumble. Martin was among the league leaders in tackles for loss in 2012 and has plenty of 2013 preseason accolades. He has been named preseason All-ACC by most media outlets and should once again be under consideration for the Ted Hendricks Award (nation s top defensive end). A senior from Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Martin collected 40 tackles, including 15.5 for loss and four sacks, in He also broke up three passes, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Tre Boston All-ACC candidate Tre Boston has a team-high four interceptions and has posted 70 tackles on the season. He had a spectacular one-handed interception in the end zone against Middle Tennessee to snuff out a Blue Raider drive in the first quarter. He now has intercepted a pass in each of his four seasons as a Tar Heel. He picked off his 11th career pass against Miami. His 12 career interceptions ranks third at UNC. Schoettmer Makes An Impact Sophomore linebacker Jeff Schoettmer came to UNC as a walk-on in After a year as a key reserve, Schoettmer earned a scholarship this season and is Carolina s leading tackler with 79 stops. He also has 4.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and one fumble recovery. Schoettmer was has started all 10 games at middle linebacker. Freshmen See Action Nine true freshmen and six redshirt freshmen have played this season. The true freshmen are tailback T.J. Logan, tailback Khris Francis, safety Dominique Green, wide receiver Bug Howard, wide receiver Ryan Switzer, defensive back Brian Walker, bandit Mikey Bart, cornerback Des Lawrence and center Lucas Crowley. Green made the first tackle of the college football season on the opening kickoff of the game at No. 6 South Carolina. The redshirt freshmen who have played are offensive tackle Jon Heck, offensive guard Caleb Peterson, defensive end Junior Gnonkonde, place-kicker Nick Weiler, tailback Charles Brunson and wide receiver Mack Hollins. Hibbard Helps Heels Lead League In Net Punting Carolina ranks first in the ACC and 15th in the country with a 39.5-yard net punting average. Junior punter Tommy Hibbard, a preseason Ray Guy candidate, has had an exceptional season with 57 punts for a 42.6 average, which ranks five in the ACC. Seventeen punts have been downed inside the 20-yard line and two have been over 50 yards. He had a 76-yard punt in a win over Boston College. In a win at NC State, Hibbard averaged 40.9 yards on eight punts, but dropped four of those eight kicks inside the NC State 20-yard line. He kicked a 43-yarder downed the State 2-yard line by Jabari Price; a 46-yarder downed at the Pack 5-yard line by Price, a 39-yarder fair caught at the 11; and a 31-yarder with 6:20 to play in the game that went out of bounds at the Wolfpack 9-yard line. 10 GOHEELS.COM

Only Ken Willard (No. 2 in 1965), Ken Huff (No. 3 in 1975), Lawrence Taylor (No. 2 in 1981), Peppers (No. 2 in 2002) and Sims (No. 6 in 2002) were selected higher than Cooper. Cooper is the fourth offensive lineman picked in the first round from UNC. The others were Huff in 1975 (No. 3 overall), Brian Blados in 1984 (No. 28) and Harris Barton in 1987 (No. 22). Huff is the only other guard to be picked in the first round from UNC. Cooper is the first offensive guard selected in the top 10 of the NFL Draft since 1997 when Colorado s Chris Naeole was selected by the New Orleans Saints at No. 10. He is the highest selected offensive guard since Bill Fralic was taken No. 2 by Atlanta in Williams is the first defensive tackle from UNC selected in the first round since Balmer was taken at No. 29 by San Francisco in Carolina has had 22 all-time first-round draft picks, which ranks just outside the top 25 in the country. It is, however, the most of any school in the state, ahead of NC State (15), Duke (5) and Wake Forest (4). Half (11) of Carolina s 22 all-time first-round draft picks have been defensive linemen. Over the last 18 years, a Carolina defensive lineman has been selected in the first round on 10 occasions. It is the first time Carolina has produced the first tailback of the draft. Ethan Horton, a running back at UNC, was selected in the 1984 draft, but played exclusively tight end in the NFL. Bernard became the first Tar Heel tailback taken in the second round since Natrone Means in Bernard is the highest selected tailback from UNC since Horton in Horton played tight end in the NFL. Offensive tackle Brennan Williams was selected in the third round by the Houston Texans (89th overall) and Travis Bond was selected in the seventh round by the Minnesota Vikings (214th overall). It is the first time three Tar Heel offensive linemen have been taken in the same draft. 12 LARRY FEDORA Head Coach Second Year at UNC More than a year ago at his introductory press conference, Larry Fedora stood in front of a packed room at UNC s Loudermilk Center and promised to provide an entertaining product. At one point he even told the gathering that you if you leave your seat to go to the concession stand, you re probably going to miss a touchdown. He did not disappoint. In his first year in Chapel Hill, Fedora s Tar Heels posted more than 35 school offensive records, won eight games and tied for first in the ACC s Coastal Division. Led by a group of resilient seniors, Fedora led a focused team that lived by his mantra of playing smart, fast and physical. He hopes to build off that momentum as he enters his second season as UNC s head coach. He is the 35th head coach in Carolina history and the 11th since the ACC was formed in Fedora s first season in Chapel Hill was highlighted by a 6-1 mark at home, including a thrilling victory over NC State and a win against Virginia Tech. Giovani Bernard s 74-yard punt return in the final seconds of the NC State game ended Carolina s five-game losing skid to its nearby rival and set off a wild celebration on the UNC sidelines. The Virginia Tech game saw Carolina rush for 339 yards, the most since 2004, as the Tar Heels posted 533 total yards of offense. It was also the most points the Hokies had allowed in a game since joining the ACC. Carolina also posted home victories over Elon, East Carolina, Idaho and Maryland, and picked up road wins at Miami and Virginia. It marked the first time a UNC coach had won at Virginia in his first attempt since Dick Crum in Carolina s players benefitted from Fedora s up-tempo style of play. Offensive guard Jonathan Cooper and defensive tackle Sylvester Williams were selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft by Arizona (No. 7) and Denver (No. 28), respectively. It was just the second time Carolina had produced multiple first-round picks in the same season. Cooper was a consensus first-team All-America and became the first Outland Trophy finalist in UNC history. Williams, who prior to coming to UNC had worked in a factory making truck parts, was a stout run-stopper who earned first-team All-ACC honors. Bernard, the fleet-footed runner from Ft. Lauderdale, led the league in rushing, earned first-team All-ACC honors at both running back and specialist and was the first tailback selected in the NFL Draft when Cincinnati picked him in the second round. Nine Tar Heels from the 2012 squad signed professional contracts, including five draft picks and four free agent signings. All three senior offensive linemen were drafted, including Cooper in the first round, Brennan Williams in the third and Travis Bond in the seventh. Statistically, Carolina finished eighth in the country in scoring, averaging a school-record 40.6 points per game. The Tar Heels scored 30 or more points in nine of 12 games, and twice posted more than 60 points, including a school-record 66 against Idaho. Carolina was 14th in the nation in total offense, averaging a school-record yards per game. It marked the fifth consecutive year as a head coach that Fedora s offense has gained more than 5,000 total yards. The Tar Heels also excelled on special teams, finishing 10th in net punting and 10th in punt return average. Bernard was second nationally in punt returns and fourth as an all-purpose runner. 13 Miss s graduation success rate (GSR) ranked second in CUSA in the academic year and third during the academic year. In 2009, USM was recognized by the AFCA for its graduation success rate. The Southern Miss job was Fedora s first head coaching assignment after excelling in the collegiate ranks as an assistant. He spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State from where the Cowboys raised their rushing, passing and total offensive yards each year with Fedora at the helm. In 2006, the Cowboys were one of just two teams - the other being Boise State - to average over 200 yards both rushing and passing. The OSU offense averaged over 30 points per contest over his final two seasons as well. The Cowboys made the biggest improvement in the country in scoring following his second season of running the offense, jumping from 96th nationally in 2005 to 7th in Prior to his stint at Oklahoma State, Fedora spent three seasons at Florida as run game coordinator (2002), perimeter game coordinator (2003) and offensive coordinator (2004). He also coached the running backs and receivers all three seasons. In 2004, Fedora s Gators ranked first in the SEC in six different categories including passing offense (271.1), total offense (426.9), third down conversion percentage (47.8), touchdown passes (29), pass attempts (407) and pass completions (243). Before going to Florida, Fedora was the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee from In three seasons at MTSU, Fedora s offense averaged 424 yards of total offense, 181 rushing yards and 31 points per game. With Fedora as their offensive coordinator, the Blue Raiders set 43 school records over three seasons. Fedora began his coaching career as a graduate assistant (1986) at Austin College. He then served as an assistant coach at Garland (Texas) High School from Fedora returned to the collegiate ranks in 1991, serving as the tight ends, wide receivers and running backs coach at Baylor, where he stayed until He then spent two seasons ( ) at Air Force coaching the passing game and wide receivers. As a player, Fedora was a wide receiver at Austin College ( ) in Sherman, Texas.
