Pine Tree Rifle Club Home On The Range August 2017 Centerfire/Rimfire Shooting News - Ken Benton PTRC Members Make Strong Showing at IBS 100 Photos Courtesy: Mike Johnson PTRC s world record holder, Dr. Richard Maretzo (left), accepts the VFS 2 nd Place award from range director, Ken Benton during a ceremony held at the conclusion of the IBS 100 Yard match held Saturday, August 26, Maine s Jim Paganelli and PTRC s Dr. Richard Maretzo are no stranger to each other as both squared off in the IBS 100 Yard Score Match hosted at the Pine Tree Rifle Club recently. Paganelli and Maretzo are actually good friends and highly accomplished benchrest shooters who have competed at the PTRC together for many years. Maretzo set a world record in IBS Group shooting here at the PTRC in the early 1980 s and a full-size bench with a World Record Placard is erected in the entrance to the clubhouse to commemorate his achievement. Paganelli has also set his mark in the IBS record books which includes a 2016 National Championship in the 100 Yard Score Match held here at the PTRC. Doc Maretzo, using his 30 BR was leading a large contingent of VFS class competitors for the better part of the day, but Paganelli, also shooting a 30 BR, pulled out the win this time as it came down to the very last match of the day. Paganelli. earned first place honors in VFS (Varmint For Score) with a score of 250 and 19 X s followed closely by Maretzo with a score of 250 and 18 X s. Vermont s, Tom Benoit, using his 6 PPC, rounded out the Top-3 with a score of 250 and 16 X s. Benoit, the only 2-Gun shooter of the Day, also captured the IBS Hunter Class championship with a score of 250 and 12 X s using his 30 BR.

IBS-VFS Class Champion: Jim Paganelli IBS Hunter Class Champion: Tom Benoit The Club division of this event was also highly competitive and well represented by the Pine Tree Rifle Club. In Club Sporter Class, PTRC s, John DelSavio, dominated capturing the CSR championship with a score of 244 and 7X s with his.223. Another club member using his.223 was Doug Sterling who finished 2 nd in CSR with a score of 219 and 2X s. In the Club Benchrest Class, the Gilbert Clan ran the table. PTRC member, Richard Gilbert, took top honors with a score of 249 and 17X s, followed in 2 nd place by his son, Scott Gilbert, who scored a 249 and 15X s, followed in 3 rd place by his grandson, Adam Gilbert, with a score of 249 and 8X s. Club member, Jerry Arnold, donated and presented a selection of knives won by Don Cameron, Richard Maretzo, and Michael Tunis. Special thanks to Jerry for his patronage and generous consideration of the competitors as he donates at each and every IBS match. Jerry Arnold presenting prize to Doc Maretzo Young Gun, Adam Gilbert 3 rd Place CBR The Gilbert Family obviously had a great day at the PTRC as many family members attended including Portia Gilbert who also competed in the Club CBR Class. Adam proudly accepted his grandfather s and father s plaques as they had to leave early. There is great satisfaction in watching families spending time together and enjoying themselves. What it comes down to is this is what it s all about and we are experiencing these moments more and more often at all of the different ranges at the PTRC. The Pine Tree Rifle Club is truly a fresh slice of FREEDOM! Photos From IBS 100 Yard Match Saturday, August 26, 2017

The Rifleman s Team Challenge hosted at the PTRC on Saturday, August 19, proved highly competitive and very enjoyable for participants. For the Pine Tree Rifle Club, this was a first of its kind event with five teams of three shooters vying for a team championship. The competition was intense and the outcome was extremely close with mere points separating the Top-3 team place finishes. The final results revealed that Team Donaldson, comprised of shooters John DelSavio, Mark Duesler, and Ken Benton captured the gold medal team championship with 239 points. Team VanDetta, comprised of shooters Wayne VanDetta, Vinnie VanDetta, and Tim Ryczek followed closely with a silver medal second place team finish with a score of 238 points. Team Big Fish, comprised of shooters Larry Mihalik, Adam Mihalik, and Doug Sterling earned the third place bronze medal team place finish with a score of 236 points. Team 14 ½, comprised of Rich Lewandowski, Chris Bouck, and Don Rankins, finished fourth with a score of 213 points while Team Rusty Nova, comprised of Randy Swart, Rich Gilbert, and John Quackenbush was fifth with 207 points. Medals were presented to each of the shooters in the Top-3 place finishing teams. Team Donaldson s, Mark Duesler zero s in on his 100 yard target. Three Relays were contested with the Course of Fire involving firing five rounds of ammo at a 50 yard paper target from the offhand position followed immediately by firing five more rounds into a 100 yard paper woodchuck target from the benchrest position in 15 minutes. Shooters were only allowed to use sand bags or bipods from the benchrest position - no rear rests. Calibers contested included 17 HMR,.223 Rem, and.243 Win. Shooters were permitted to coach and spot for their teammates similar to methods used for open range hunting and varmint shooting excursions. The camaraderie amongst team members was just outstanding. Everyone was engaged and having fun including the workers and spectators. A perfect score for an individual shooter was 125 points, 50 for Off-Hand and 75 for Benchrest. Top-5 individual shooters included Vinnie VanDetta (86 pts), Randy Swart (85 pts), Wayne VanDetta (84 pts), Ken Benton (84 pts), and Doug Sterling (83 pts). Top-3 Off-Hand shooters included Adam Mihalik (45 pts), Rich Lewandowski (41 pts), and Vinnie VanDetta (41 pts). Top 3 Benchrest shooters included Randy Swart (50 pts), Ken Benton (50 pts), and Doug Sterling (50 pts). It was quite obvious that the Off-Hand portion of the event proved most challenging

Special thanks to all of the non-shooting working members who helped make this event successful including; Mike Johnson, Steve Riach, Doug Simek, Al DeMarco, Joe DeMarco, and Peter Tautznik for keeping the grounds groomed and looking like a world class shooting range. It s Post Time! Team Donaldson Team VanDetta

The outcome of many of the Rimfire League s class championhips and place finishes tend to come down to the last evening of shooting. Pictured here are (l to r): Valarie Anker, Ed Anker, Ken Benton, John DelSavio, Wayne VanDetta, and Mike Johnson. More of Peter s photos of the Finale are available below.
