After posting a -5 record in non-conference play the Flames started their Big South slate with a 4-4 mark before turning up the heat on the opposition. The Flames won eight of their final games as they headed into the conference tournament as the fourth seed. In their opening round meeting with Charleston Southern, the Flames took control of a tightly contest game in the second half to claim a 8-7 win and date with the Towson State the No. seed and the regular season conference champions in the semifinals. During the regular season, the Tigers won both meetings with the Flames by a combined six points. This time the Flames would take it to the Tigers from the start. After shooting 5 percent in the first half, Liberty held a 8- edge after the game s first minutes. In the second half Towson State found themselves down - points before making a charge. The Tigers got to within 5-5 with 9:5 but could not take the lead. Once again Towson State got to within one point of the lead with 7 second remaining but Matt Hildebrand sealed the Liberty win with four straight free throws. The Flames made their first Big South finals appearance against the second seeded Campbell Camels. The teams split two tightly contested regular season meetings but the Flames would never let the Camels into the game. During the regular season, the Flames traveled as far as Alaska, to participate in the Great Alaska Shootout, and Arizona, to complete in the Fiesta Bowl Classic, giving them a chance to face the likes of Duke and Arizona. In total, the Flames played the toughest non-conference schedule in school history and one that ranked in the Top 5 in the country. But it all seemed to workout just perfectly for the Flames as the difficulties of the schedule prepared Liberty for a grueling Big South Conference regular season, which Liberty finished tied atop the regular-season standings with league newcomer Birmingham-Southern, earning them their first-ever number-one seed in a Big South Basketball Championship and the right to host all of their tournament games in the Vines Center. After surviving a pesky eighth-seeded Charleston Southern squad, 6-54, which took the Flames to overtime during the regular season, Liberty picked up momentum in its quest for a second Big South title in years with an 88-7 victory over fourth-seeded Coastal Carolina, propelling the team to its fourth appearance in a Big South Championship title game. The title game pitted the top two teams in the tournament against each other as the top-seeded Flames squared off against secondseeded High Point, but the contest quickly proved to be a one-sided battle as Liberty jumped out on top of the Panthers early in the game and never looked back en route to an victory over High Point, marking the most dominating Big South Championship title game performance in the league s -year history. After the final buzzer sounded in the Vines Center on March 6, 4, most if not all of the Big South record 8,55 fans in attendance for the championship game stormed the court to celebrate with the victors and started a party that last several days in Lynchburg. Eight days later, the Flames returned to the Vines Center floor to host a Selection Show gathering, where they learned that they would be traveling to Buffalo, N.Y., as a 6th-seed and would face top-seeded St. Joseph s. Coming off their first loss of the season, St. Joseph s stormed out to an early lead as All-American Jameer Nelson scored of the Hawks 46 first half points. Liberty slowly overcame St. Joseph s quick start; however, the margin was too great and the Flames fell to the eventual Elite Eight team, 8-6. The future of the Flames program was the bright spot for Liberty in the contest as David Dees netted a team-high points, while Big South Rookie of the Year Larry Blair scored nine, giving the upcoming leaders of the team the taste of what they hoped would become an annual tradition during their stay at Liberty.
