NATIONAL RADIO: CBS Radio/Westwood One Bill Rosinski and Dan Reeves. LOCAL RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and Jaguars are set to duel for a second consecutive year at Arrowhead. Last season s New Year s Eve clash resulted in a Chiefs victory which helped propel the Chiefs to a playoff berth after all the dust had settled on a wild final regular season weekend. Kansas City returns to Arrowhead for an important two-game homestand after a win at San Diego (9/30). The Chiefs second consecutive win marked the 50th regular season victory for Herm Edwards and propelled the Chiefs into a three-way logjam atop the AFC West standings. KC will be seeking its second three-game winning streak of the Edwards era against a Jacksonville squad that is coming off a bye week. Dating back to 90, Kansas City owns the NFL s best regular season home record, owning a (.752) mark at Arrowhead over that span. The Chiefs will seek to add to that total against a Jacksonville squad whose most recent victory was a convincing road decision at Denver (9/23). A pair of the league s top young defensive units will be on display in this contest. Kansas City currently ranks third in the league, allowing just yards per game of total offense. The Chiefs are eighth in the NFL, allowing an average of just 13.0 offensive ppg. In fact, Kansas City s defense has allowed a league-low six offensive points in the second half this season and has pitched back-to-back second-half shutouts. Opposing passers have compiled a 62.6 rating against the Chiefs, the lowest total in the league. Jacksonville boasts a formidable defensive tackle duo in Pro Bowlers Marcus Stroud and John Henderson. The Jaguars are second in the NFL in scoring defense (11.3 ppg), while ranking fourth in the league in both total defense (287.7 ypg) and pass defense (150.7 ypg). Jacksonville also leads the NFL by sacking opponents once every 7.1 pass attempts. Chiefs rookie WR Dwayne Bowe (D1-07) set a KC single-game rookie record with 164 receiving yards at San Diego (9/30), breaking a mark that had stood since the franchise s inaugural season in 60. In addition, TE Tony Gonzalez tied the NFL s all-time record for TD receptions by a player at his position (62). Two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson posted a seasonhigh 123 rushing yards at San Diego, establishing a Chiefs career record with his 25th 100-yard rushing performance. Next week, KC is home vs. Cincinnati (10/14), while Jacksonville is home vs. Houston (10/14) STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS JAGUARS Total Offense (27) (21) Rush Offense (30) (13) Pass Offense (19) (22) Total Defense (3) (4) Rush Defense (19) (26) Pass Defense (5) (4) Turnover Ratio (10t) +2 (7t) Pts./Game (27t) 15.3 (25) Opp. Pts./Game (9t) 11.3 (2) THE SERIES The Chiefs are 2-4 in regular season action against the Jaguars. In 2006, he paved the way for RB Larry Johnson who established a KC single-season record with 1,789 rushing yards. A native of Parkersburg, IA (pop. 1,804), Wiegmann is one of four active NFL players from that Midwestern football Mecca, joining C Brad Meester (JAX), DE Jared DeVries (DET) and DE Aaron Kampman (GB). REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. GONZALEZ TIES NFL TD MARK FOR TIGHT ENDS Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 62 career TD catches, tying Shannon Sharpe for the NFL record for tight ends. Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (742) and receiving yardage (8,948), trailing only Sharpe (815-10,060). Gonzalez s 62 total TDs with KC trail only RB Priest Holmes (83). Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 8,962 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (eight) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 18 career 100-yard receiving games, trailing only WR Otis Taylor (19) for the top mark in Chiefs history. Those yard games are fourth in NFL history among TEs, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), Jackie Smith (22) and Sharpe (19). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 103 contests at San Diego (9/30), meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history. In six career games vs. Jacksonville, Gonzalez owns 33 catches for 360 yards with four TDs. He had five catches for 71 yards with a 22-yard TD at San Diego (9/30). 4 Two of the NFL s Top Defenses Set to Square Off in Chiefs-Jaguars Clash by Pete Moris The Arrowhead Advantage Kansas City owns an NFL-best (.752) regular season mark at Arrowhead dating back to 90. Since the start of the 2002 campaign, the Chiefs are 9-2 (.818) at Arrowhead during the month of October. Only Philadelphia owns a better winning percentage in October home games over that span with a 9-1 (.900) record. KC is 7-2 at home under Herm Edwards, including a victory vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06). The Jaguars are (.438) on the road under Jack Del Rio, but are just 3-6 since the start of the 2006 campaign. Del Rio owns a 5-3 career mark against AFC West opponents. Winning the Turnover Battle Always Important at Arrowhead The Chiefs are 44-4 (.917) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin dating back to 95. KC has won 17 consecutive games when positive at home dating back to 2002, the third-longest active streak in the league. The Chiefs have also registered at least one takeaway in 23 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL. KC is 6-2 under Edwards when positive. KC was actually -2 (1 take/3 gives) vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06) and still managed to register a victory. The Chiefs won t want to tempt fate again when facing a Jaguars squad that is 24-6 (.800) under Jack Del Rio with a positive turnover mark. Over that same span, the Jaguars are 3-15 (.167) in road games with a negative turnover differential. Jacksonville has committed just three turnovers in Only Indianapolis (2) has commited fewer. KC registered 5.0 sacks in the club s first home contest, a win vs. Minnesota (9/23). Opposing passers have compiled a league-low 62.6 rating against KC this season. The Chiefs currently have 11.0 sacks on the year, the club s best four-game total since having 11.0 sacks at the four-game mark in Jaguars QB David Garrard owns a 12-9 (.571) record as an NFL starter, including a 5-4 mark on the road. Garrard has not thrown an INT in 71.4% (15 of 21) of his career starts and has just two multi-int games on his starting ledger. Garrard completed 10 of 18 passes for 140 yards with one TD and one INT in his initial start at Arrowhead (12/31/06), a KC victory. Kansas City is 54-8 (.871) at Arrowhead dating back to 95 when holding foes to 21 points or less, including victories in 23 of the club s last 24 games in those circumstances. Prior to MNF, the Chiefs were one of just four teams (JAX, NE, and TB) that have held their foes to 20 points or less in every contest this season. After a victory vs. Minnesota (9/23), KC is now 41-0 at Arrowhead dating back to 90 when holding opponents to 10 points or less. Since the start of the 2006 campaign, the Chiefs have allowed just 161 points (17.9 ppg) in nine home contests. The highest point total that KC has permitted any opponent during that nine-game home stretch was a 30-point performance by Jacksonville (12/31/06). The Jaguars are 5-15 (.250) under Jack Del Rio on the road when being held to 21 points or less. Jacksonville is 0-13 all-time on the road when being held to 10 points or less, including an 0-5 mark in such contests under Del Rio. Jacksonville has averaged 20.2 ppg in nine road games dating back to the start of the 2006 campaign. Jacksonville s defense has been even better than Kansas City in terms of scoring defense in 2007, allowing just 34 total points, good for an 11.3 ppg average that ranks second in the league behind only Tampa Bay (11.0 ppg). Prior to Monday Night Football, Jacksonville and New England were the league s only two squads to hold their first three foes to 14 points or less. Dating back to the start of the 2006 campaign, Jacksonville has allowed 16.2 ppg and has held seven foes to 10 points or less. Chiefs Four-Game Defensive Report The Chiefs defense continues to make steady improvement under defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. Kansas City has made significant progress in several key areas compared to just two years ago. Most notably, KC is permitting 83.0 fewer total yards per game and 8.3 fewer points per game compared to the four-game mark of the 2005 campaign. Kansas City is 52-7 (.881) at Arrowhead when leading at halftime dating back to 95. The Chiefs also own a 7-1 record when holding a halftime lead under Herm Edwards. The Jaguars are 21-5 (.808) when leading at halftime under Jack Del Rio, but are just (.363) when trailing after two quarters. Jacksonville led 17-7 at the half in a win at Denver (9/23). The Chiefs and Jaguars have both been adept at preventing scores early in games. KC has held two of its four opponents scoreless in the first quarter this season. Kansas City scored a defensive TD for the first time since 2005, while rookie WR Dwayne Bowe enjoyed a breakout performance in a game that marked the 50th regular season victory in the head coaching career of Herm Edwards. San Diego opened the game with a quick 10 points on their first two possessions. First, a 12-play scoring drive resulted in a 24-yard K Nate Kaeding field goal. Next, QB Philip Rivers completed passes to three different players before RB LaDainian Tomlinson scored on a five-yard TD run. The defense gave the Chiefs their first positive boost as S Jarrad Page recovered a fumble at the San Diego 22- yard line. Kansas City pounded RB Larry Johnson seven times for 19 yards before coming up just short of the end zone. K Dave Rayner would boot a 21-yard field goal to pull Kansas City within The two teams would alternate field goals in the second quarter as Kaeding sandwiched three-pointers from 51 and 38 yards around a 25-yarder from Rayner. That kicking competition put the score at 16-6 at intermission. Kansas City started to chip away at the Chargers lead early in the third quarter with another Rayner field goal, this time from 41 yards out, making the count LB Derrick Johnson would keep the pressure on San Diego when intercepted the second Rivers pass of the afternoon, setting the Chiefs up on the San Diego 36-yard line. From there Huard hit Larry Johnson for a 14-yard pick up, then watched TE Tony Gonzalez out-jump two defenders for a 22-yard TD tying the game at late in the third quarter. The touchdown catch was the 62nd of Gonzalez s career to tie TE Shannon Sharpe for the most TD receptions by a TE in NFL history. Huard and the Chiefs offense stayed on the attack minutes later. After a 19-yard gain from Gonzalez, rookie WR Dwayne Bowe caught a slant pass, spun out of a tackle and raced for a 51-yard touchdown. Bowe s third consecutive game with a TD reception gave him eight catches for 164 yards, the highest single-game receiving yardage tally by a rookie in franchise history. The Chiefs put the game on ice when Johnson made his second big defensive play by sacking Rivers and knocking the ball loose, allowing rookie CB Tyron Brackenridge to execute the scoop-and-score. Brackenridge raced 50 yards for the touchdown and gave the Chiefs a lead with 7:37 left to play. The Chargers would threaten to score once more, but as they faced a fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line Page made a diving pass break-up to give the ball back to Kansas City on downs with only 3:41 left in regulation. With a 37-yard run, Johnson would run the clock out and seal the Chiefs win.
