GASOL POSTS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Pau Gasol had one of the best all-around games of his career at Seattle on Mar. 8, finishing with a game-high 21 points, 12 rebounds and a game and career-high 12 assists recording the first triple-double of his career. Gasol s triple-double was just the fifth in franchise history, and second since the team s relocation to Memphis (see Miller in 3-D below). *Gasol is the only player in the NBA to post a triple-double consisting of at least 20 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists this season. Gasol also had a career-high four steals and three blocks in 41 minutes. GRIZZLIES ALL-STAR ACTION: Pau Gasol appeared in his first All-Star game, finishing with a game-high 12 rebounds, including a game-high six on the offensive end (tied with Tim Duncan) in 14 minutes of action. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, prior to this year s game, only one player had even half that many total rebounds in an NBA All-Star Game in which he failed to score (Darrell Imhoff had seven boards in the 1967 All-Star Game; Ben Wallace also had eight rebounds without scoring on Sunday night). His 12 rebounds is also the most in an All-Star game since Tim Duncan pulled down 13 caroms in the 2004 All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Gasol represents the Grizzlies first All-Star in franchise history and the first Spanish player in NBA history to be selected to the All-Star team. Grizzlies rookie Hakim Warrick also participated in this year s All-Star festivities, placing third in the Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk competition Saturday night. Warrick becomes the first Memphis Grizzlies player to compete in the contest, and second player in franchise history to participate in the event (Stromile Swift, 2001 Slam Dunk competition). MILLER IN 3-D; GRIZZ STAR RESERVE POSTS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Mike Miller recorded his first career triple-double in a win over Sacramento on Jan. 10, finishing with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in 41 minutes off the bench. Miller s efforts marked the fourth triple-double in franchise history, and first since the team s relocation to Memphis ending the Grizzlies' streak of 452 games without a player recording a triple-double (since Mike Bibby had one on Apr. 2/00). At the time, it was the second-longest current drought in the league. Utah (at the time) had the longest active streak, but snapped their drought as well at 530 straight games when Andrei Kirilenko recorded his first career triple-double on Jan. 17 (first since Karl Malone posted one on May 4/99). Miller is just the third NBA player in the last 10 years to record a triple-double in a game that he did not start. Shawn Bradley did it for Dallas on Apr. 7/98 as did Magic Johnson for the Lakers on Feb. 14/ TEAM HIGHLIGHTS: - The Grizzlies win on Nov. Utah gave Mike Fratello his 47 th victory with Memphis, surpassing Sidney Lowe as the franchise s second-winningest coach in history. - The Grizzlies opened the season by going 10-5 in November, their best opening month in franchise history. The Grizzlies were one of only seven teams to post 10 or more wins in November in the NBA this season. - Memphis won three-straight games by 20 or more points for the first time with wins over Dallas (Nov. 26), Toronto (Nov. 30) and Orlando (Dec. 2), accomplishing the feat for the first time in franchise history. - The Grizzlies tied the franchise record for the most wins in December, going 9-5 in the month. - By earning their 20 th win with a victory over Golden State on Jan. 3 (only 30 games into the season), the Grizzlies reached the 20-win plateau quicker than they have in any other season. The previous best was through 38 games, accomplished both last season and in the season. For comparison, the Grizzlies didn t crack 20 wins in each of their first four seasons (including the lockout-shortened season). - The Grizzlies record of through their first 41 games was their best first-half start to a season in franchise history. GRIZZLIES IN THE COMMUNITY : HOMETOWN HOOPS The Memphis Grizzlies have unveiled Hometown Hoops, a 15 x 40 display of almost 40 area high school jerseys in the Grand Lobby of FedExForum. The display pays homage to the outstanding tradition of high school basketball in the Memphis region, representing both public and private institutions. There is no stronger basketball tradition in the country for quality high school basketball than right here in Memphis, said Grizzlies President of Business Operations Andy Dolich. The wall is not fully complete and we are looking for every school in the region to have a jersey as part of the display. At the time, the following schools appear as part of the Hometown Hoops display: Bishop Byrne, Bolton, Booker T. Washington, Briarcrest, Carver, Central, Christian Brothers, Collierville, Craigmont, East, Fairley, Harding, Horn Lake, Kingsbury, Kirby, Lausanne, Manassas, Melrose, Memphis University School, Mitchell, Northside, Oakhaven, Overton, Raleigh-Egypt, Sheffield, St. Benedict, St. George s, St. Mary s, Treadwell, Trezevant, Turrell, West Memphis, Westside, Westwood, White Station, Whitehaven and Wooddale. For more information or to have your school added to the Hometown Hoops display, contact Grizzlies Manager of Community Investment James Underwood at (901) TICKETS FOR KIDS The Memphis Grizzlies' Tickets for Kids program facilitates the distribution of tickets purchased by Grizzlies season ticket holders, corporate sponsors, players, coaches, and owners to charities and youth organizations throughout the Mid-South. The program aims to provide children who would not otherwise have the resources the opportunity to attend a Grizzlies home basketball game. While doing so, the Grizzlies aim to recognize hard work and achievement in the classroom. This season, 13 Grizzlies players and the coaching staff have donated the resources necessary to provide area children with tickets to Grizzlies home games. Contact Grizzlies Media Relations for more information and feature opportunities.

12 GRIZZLIES HEAD COACH, MIKE FRATELLO President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced on December 2, 2004 that NBA veteran coach Mike Fratello had been named the Grizzlies seventh head coach in team history. Fratello, 57, joined the Grizzlies as one of the NBA s most successful coaches in history, ranking 19 th on the alltime wins list (572) and 21 st on the all-time games coached list (1,037). A 13-year coaching veteran, he had compiled a (.552) overall NBA record, qualifying for the NBA playoffs in nine of his 13 seasons as a head coach (20-34), with an all-time playoff record of Fratello inherited a struggling Grizzlies squad that had opened the year 5-11, but quickly started to turn the season around with a victory in his very first game as Memphis head coach with a victory over Philadelphia. Under the direction of The Czar, the team went on to post their longest winning streak of the season, winning six consecutive games from December 27 January 7. Memphis carried their momentum throughout January, posting the most wins in the month in franchise history, going 12-3, including an NBA best mark of 6-2 on the road. The Grizzlies efforts during the month earned Fratello Coach of the Month honors for the fourth time in his career, and first with the Grizzlies. The team s 21-9 record in their first 30 games under Fratello, was at the time tied for the seventh best start under a head coach that took over mid or part-way through the season. On March 4, 2005, Fratello reached yet another milestone, becoming just the 19 th coach in NBA history to post 600 wins in his professional coaching career. The Grizzlies finished the year at 45-37, earning a spot in the playoffs for the second consecutive season, and second time in franchise history. Fratello began his NBA coaching career as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks ( ), before stepping into his first head coaching role when he and Brendan Suhr were named co-interim head coaches of the Hawks, replacing Hubie Brown 79 games into the season. In 1982, he joined the New York Knicks as an assistant coach for one season ( ) before returning to the Hawks as head coach in 1983 to lead Atlanta for seven seasons. During his seven-year stint, he compiled a winning record (.564), advancing to the playoffs in five seasons, including leading the Hawks to a Central Division title in His 324 regular season victories, 18 postseason wins and 577 games coached rank second among Hawks alltime franchise coaching lists. He set a franchise record for winning at least 50 games in four consecutive seasons ( ), earning 1986 NBA Coach of the Year honors after leading the Hawks to a record. In 1990, he left the sidelines to join the broadcasting booth for the first time in his career when he signed on to cover the NBA on NBC Sports for three seasons ( ). In 1993, he returned to the coaching ranks to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers, compiling a regular season record and guiding his team to four post-season appearances during his six-year stint ( ). His 248 victories rank third on Cleveland s all-time list. After six seasons with Cleveland, Fratello resumed his broadcasting career, joining Turner Sports in 1999 where he has served as a broadcaster for NBA basketball for the past six years. Partnered with Marv Albert and Steve Kerr for TNT s Thursday Night NBA coverage, he also served as an NBA analyst during the playoffs from In addition, he served as a television analyst for the Miami HEAT broadcast team for three seasons before joining the Grizzlies.
