4 Deja-vu can be defined as a person s feeling that current events have been experienced before. Prophecy can explained as telling something before it happens. George Mason s men s basketball team suffered through an injury-plagued season en route to a 9-18 overall record. The following year, the Patriots rebounded, going while capturing the CAA Tournament championship along with an NCAA berth. Four years later, the signs are there that the Patriots could make another run at the conference crown after an injury-riddled season. Like , Mason s campaign featured a depleted roster; however the team managed to put together a respectable overall mark. What is not yet known is how this year s team will perform on the court. The Patriots have already experienced the deja-vu or been there. done that routine of Now, Mason, projected to finish first in preseason voting conducted by the league s 10 head coaches, and the Patriot faithful must wait and see if this season s prophecy holds true. George Mason, which looks to obtain its fourth conference crown overall and third in the past five years, returns seven letterwinners in , including three starters. Patriot head coach Jim Larranaga looks to put last season behind him and concentrate on the high expectations he has for this year s squad. Returning to lead the Patriots are three starting seniors in point guard Raoul Heinen, guard/forward Mark Davis and guard/forward Richard Tynes. Heinen has been a three-year starter at Mason who has improved his game in each new season. His scoring average increased from 7.2 in to 11.0 last year, his three-point shooting percentage rose from 24.0 to 35.4, and his free throw shooting percentage went from 62.8 to Heinen ranked fourth on the squad in scoring last year and was second in assists and steals with 84 and 37, respectively. He played in 25 games with 24 starts after dislocating his thumb midway through the season. Upon his return to the lineup, the 6-5 floor leader continued to impress, scoring in double figures in six of his final 10 games. Davis did exactly what was expected of him in his first season with the Patriots put points on the board. The 6-5 swingman out of Palm Beach (FL) Community College opened with back-toback 20-point outings on the road, and finished the year as Mason s leader in scoring average at 15.5 points per game, which also ranked seventh overall in the CAA. He also topped the Patriots in three-point field goals made (50) and grabbed 3.9 rebounds per contest. Like a lot of players, it was Davis defense that sparked his offense as he also led the Patriots in steals with 54, which ranked second in the conference at 1.93 per outing. Voted to the preseason All-CAA first team by the league s 10 head coaches, Davis, one of two players to start every game last season, should once again be a threat for Mason at both ends of the court. Tynes is another key returnee for the Patriots, having started 16 of 25 games last season. At 6-4, he is one of Mason s most versatile players, capable of seeing action at both the guard and forward positions. A terrific offensive rebounder, he expanded his role on the team to become an outstanding defender as well. A solid athlete at both ends of the court, Tynes contributed 4.8 points and 4.4 rebounds last season. Returning to the lineup after missing the season with a strained hip flexor will be Lamar Butler, a sophomore who redshirted the last year, thus retaining three years of eligibility. The 6-2 guard is an outstanding long-range and free throw shooter who was selected to the 2002 CAA All-Rookie team, and was the runner-up for Rookie of the Year honors SEASON PREVIEW In , he started 18 of the last 19 games played and led the Patriots on the year with an.819 free throw percentage and a.380 three-point field goal percentage. He also tied for the team lead in three-pointers made (57). Expected to have an even bigger impact on the program than last season will be sophomore forwards Jai Lewis and Trent Wurtz. At 6-7, 275 pounds, Lewis is an imposing presence in the frontcourt. He started nine of 28 games, finishing the season ranked second on the team in rebounding at 5.6 boards, while adding 6.7 points per contest. A CAA All-Rookie team selection, Lewis also led the Patriots in field goal percentage (53.1), displaying great touch around the basket. Wurtz is a multitalented swingman who can play both forward positions. He appeared in all 28 games, earning 10 starts. He averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per outing and shot 36.4 percent from three-point range. Also adding depth to the Mason roster will be senior Deon Cooper. Cooper, a 6-9 post player who averaged 4.2 minutes per contest last season, appeared in only 12 games after suffering through a recurring stress fracture in his foot. Among the hot topics for this year will be team chemistry, as Mason welcomes six new faces to the floor. Leading the charge amongst the newcomers will be junior Terry Reynolds, a transfer out of Toledo who redshirted last season due to NCAA transfer eligibility rules. Although he will be a new face to the Patriot masses, Reynolds will not be a new face to most of his teammates as well as the coaching staff, having benefited from a year of practice experience with the Patriots during his one year of ineligibility. The 2001 Mid-American Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman and All-MAC honorable mention candidate his sophomore season, Reynolds played in 61 games during his two campaigns with Rockets, scoring 13.3 points, grabbing 3.9 rebounds, and dishing out 4.4 assists per game. One new player anticipated to have a significant role this season will be junior Kevin Mickens, a 6-9 forward projected to fill the void in the frontcourt left by three-year starter Jesse Young. Mickens is a junior college transfer from Allegany College of Maryland who averaged 13.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last year for the Trojans, earning all-region and all-conference honors in his final season. Another transfer who will see plenty of action will be sophomore Tony Skinn, who spent one year at Blinn (TX) College before sitting out last year attending Hagerstown Community College. Blinn is a mercurial 6-1 guard who averaged 5.7 points per game at Blinn and shot 72.0 percent from the free throw line. Mason also welcomes three freshmen in Gabe Norwood, Makan Konate and Jesus Urbina. Norwood, a 6-4 swingman who guided his State College High School team to the state championship, also led the team in scoring (14.8), rebounding (6.3), steals (71), and blocked shots (65). He was second overall in assists with 95. Konate, a 6-7 forward with excellent range from the perimeter, averaged 6.8 points per game as a senior at Worcester (MA) Academy and was named a McDonald s nominee. Urbina is a 6-7 forward who is also versatile enough to play out on the wing. Selected an independent schools all-conference and allstate honoree, he had already scored over 1,100 career points following his junior year. Although it is not know how well this year s team will perform throughout the course of the season, it is clear that from top to bottom the George Mason Patriots are loaded with an intriguing blend of youth and experience. Call it karma, destiny, fate, or whatever, if the Patriots live up to the prophecy, it will be like dejavu all over again.

5 Onward and upward. For George Mason men s basketball head coach Jim Larranaga, his first challenge with the Patriots was to rebuild a program that had fallen into disarray. He has quickly done that in his six seasons in Fairfax, and with a long-term contract at George Mason, he prepares for the next challenge of maintaining the level of success he has established at Mason. Larranaga, who earned his 100th Mason victory in the regular season finale against Drexel, has a record in his six years at George Mason, including a mark (60-24 in Colonial Athletic Association games, best in the conference) over the past five. Those five seasons have broken a streak of eight consecutive losing campaigns, and returned the Patriots to a level of prominence in the CAA they hadn t enjoyed since the late 1980s, and the 72 wins over the past four years ranks among the most in a four-year span in the 37-year history of George Mason men s basketball. Larranaga, 54, accomplished many of the same things in his 11 years at Bowling Green State University from and in two years at American International College from In 19 years as a head coach, he has a career record of The remarkable turnaround at George Mason began just two years into Larranaga s tenure and well before most people thought the Patriots would be a contender. A 9-18 record in his first year with the Patriots in drew plaudits from knowledgeable basketball people who realized the program was headed in the right direction, but it all came together the following season. George Mason was overall and a school-best 13-3 in the CAA in , making a 10-game improvement over the previous season, the 12 th -best performance in the nation. The Patriots won their first-ever conference regular season championship and their second CAA Tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The 19 victories were tied for sixth on the all-time list and were the most in nine years, and the season included a 10-game winning streak, the second best in school history. The performance by the Patriots earned numerous honors for Larranaga as he was named Coach of the Year by the CAA and in the NABC District 4, and he was selected state Coach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) and the Richmond Times-Dispatch. George Mason followed up with another overall mark in , tying James Madison for first place in the CAA at 12-4 and earning the top seed in the conference tournament. In , the Patriots finished overall and 11-5 in the CAA, good for a tie for second place, and they won the CAA Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. The Patriots, who also have a HEAD COACH JIM LARRANAGA record at home at the Patriot Center over the past five seasons, produced another solid campaign with a overall record (13-5 in the CAA) and a NIT berth in Mason s roster was racked with injuries throughout the year, but managed to pull together a record (11-7 in the CAA), and a fourth-place conference finish. At his previous stop on the coaching circuit, Larranaga made an immediate impact upon his arrival at Bowling Green in The Falcons were the nation s most improved team under a first-year head coach that took over a program with a losing record, posting a record for an eight-game improvement over the previous season. Larranaga went on to record a mark in 11 years at Bowling Green. He was the 1997 Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year after leading Bowling Green to a record, a conference regular season co-championship and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament. The 22 victories were the most by a Bowling Green team in 47 years and the 13 conference wins were the second-highest total in Falcon history. Larranaga s 170 victories at Bowling Green rank second all-time on the Falcons coaching list and he was only the second coach to record consecutive postseason appearances. Larranaga led his squad to NIT berths in 1990 (18-11) and again in 1991 (17-13), the first time the Falcons enjoyed back-to-back postseason appearances since the early 60s. Bowling Green won better than 61 percent of its games in Larranaga s last four years, recording a mark during that stretch. The Falcons finished fourth or better in the MAC in five of Larranaga s 11 seasons and he is among the winningest coaches in MAC history. Larranaga received his first head coaching position in 1977 when he was named to the post at American International, a Division II program in Springfield, MA. Taking over a team that had suffered through five consecutive losing seasons prior to his arrival, Larranaga turned AIC into a winning program in his first year and compiled a mark in two seasons. Over the years, Larranaga s teams have earned a reputation as giant killers. His Bowling Green teams defeated perennial national powers Kentucky, Michigan State (twice), Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue. The 1990 win over Michigan State (98-85) came when the Spartans were ranked fifth in the country. With the Patriots, his teams have won at Mississippi (snapping the Rebels 44-game non-conference home win streak in ) and has pushed nationally ranked Maryland to the threshold of defeat twice before dropping three-point decisions, the latest in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament in Boise, ID. Larranaga s teams also are known for their offensive efficiency and a frenetic defense dubbed the Scramble. In , the Patriots led the CAA (in conference games) in scoring for the third straight year at 72.8 points per game and were second in scoring margin, outscoring opponents by 7.9 points per contest. George Mason also led the conference in field goal percentage (.460) and turnover margin (+2.97) for the third con-

6 secutive season, led the CAA in steals (8.4) and was second in assists (13.7), and it also ranked second in assist/turnover ratio (0.96). In , George Mason ranked second overall and 16th nationally in scoring defense, holding opponents to a school record 60.5 points per game. The Patriots also listed second in the conference and 27th nationally in rebound margin (+5.2). A native of Bronx, NY, Larranaga is a 1971 graduate of Providence College with a degree in economics. A four-year letterman for the Friars, he was the team captain as a senior, leading Providence to a 20-8 record and an NIT appearance. He graduated as the school s fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,258 points and was selected in the sixth round of the draft by the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association. He was the team s top scorer as a sophomore and junior and was named New England s Division I Sophomore of the Year in His outstanding career was rewarded when he was inducted into the Providence College Hall of Fame in Larranaga was a natural to enter the coaching ranks after being tutored by three of the most widely respected coaches in the country. He played under legendary coach Jack Curran at New York City s Archbishop Molloy High School. In 1976, he left Davidson and spent one season as player-coach for the Geronemo Basketball Club in Belgium.
