36 RETIRED JERSEYS VERNON BUTLER JOHN CLUNE DON LANGE KEVIN SINNETT Second on Navy s all-time career scoring and rebounding lists, Vernon Butler became the first player in Navy men s basketball history to have his jersey retired. Butler, a four-year letterwinner from , closed out his career with 1,952 points and 1,115 rebounds after captaining the Mid squads through two of the most successful seasons in Navy history. Leading the Mids to a 26-6 mark as a junior in 1985 and Navy s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 25 years, Butler then guided the Mids to a 30-5 mark, closing out his career against Duke in the East Region finals. A three-time all-conference forward, Butler was a 57 percent career shooter from the field and twice led the conference in rebounding. A 1954 All-America honoree, John Clune established a Navy single-season scoring record which stood for 31 years and a career scoring record which lasted 25 years. His single-season total of 634 points still ranks fourth, while his career total of 1,561 is also fourth. Meanwhile, he still owns the Naval Academy record for career scoring average at 22.3 points per game. In 1955, Clune played on the Armed Forces Pan American team and in 1956, he was a member of the Air Force Olympic Trials team. Clune was junior varsity basketball coach at the Air Force Academy in and was named the sixth Athletic Director of the Air Force Academy in November, 1975, a post he held until his retirement in Noted for his deadly hook shot, Don Lange and Navy basketball go hand in hand. Lange teamed up with John Clune to lead the Midshipmen to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in and under the guidance of legendary coach Ben Carnevale. A native of the Windy City, Lange earned third-team All-America recognition in his second season of playing basketball. Ironically enough, Lange gained success on the basketball floor with no prior experience of playing the organized game. It wasn t until entering the Navy that he even tried his hand at the sport. After playing just three seasons, Lange is just one of 19 Navy players to top the 1,000- point milestone. With 1,344 career points, he stands 13th on the Mids all-time scoring leaderboard and owns the fourth-best career scoring average at 20.1 points per game. A bull on the boards, Lange remains Navy s alltime leader in rebounding average, tipping the charts at 11.9 rebounds per game. During his final two seasons, he put together a string of 28-consecutive double-figure scoring games. Navy s fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,687 points, Sinnett joined David Robinson, Vernon Butler, John Clune and Don Lange as the only five players in Midshipmen history to have their jerseys retired. Sinnett, a four-year letterwinner and captain of the squad, closed out his career with 797 rebounds a Navy record at that time. Twenty years later, his rebound total now stands fourth on the Navy leaderboard. A hometown favorite hailing from Annapolis, Sinnett led the Mids in scoring all four years, including a 483-point performance his senior season. Additionally, he led Navy in rebounds his sophomore through senior seasons, including a high of 209 during his junior campaign. Along the way, Sinnett recorded three 30- plus point games, including a career-high 34 against Penn State on Valentine s Day in His 34-point effort guided the Mids to an win over the Nittany Lions at Halsey Field House. Sinnett also excelled in the classroom, garnering second-team academic All-America recognition his junior year. 146

37 DAVID ROBINSON ROBINSON GAME-BY-GAME 50 David Robinson gives his enshrinement speech during his induction to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in He came to Annapolis as a skinny 6-7 freshman from Woodbridge, Va., and an unheralded Osbourn Park High program. He did not start a game as a freshman in Navy s 24-8 season in , but jumped the opening tap in the next 99 games, as Navy rolled to 82 wins in those three campaigns. Few players in any era dominated his opponents the way Robinson did. In four years, Robinson sprouted six inches and his court numbers swelled. He claimed a pair of national blocked shot titles, as well as a rebounding crown and scored 2,669 points in his career, the 21st most in NCAA history. Over his final three years, Robinson scored 2,455 points, averaging 24.8 ppg from his sophomore to his senior season. Before Robinson, no player in NCAA history had scored 2,500 points, grabbed 1,300 rebounds (1,314) and shot better than 60 percent from the field (.613). Robinson added to his basketball accolades when he became the only American basketball player to play and win three Olympic Games, participating in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games, being a member of the original Dream Team in A perennial All-Star, Robinson led the San Antonio Spurs to the 1999 and 2003 NBA titles. Robinson s lore continued to grow in the NBA, where he was named the league MVP in 1995, Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and Rookie of the Year in He and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are the only two players to lead the league in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. Robinson is the only player in NBA history to be named to the All-NBA team as well as the All-Defensive team in each of his first seven years. Lastly, he was named one of the NBA s 50 Greatest Players of All-Time. The 1987 College Player of the Year still owns 30 different school records at Navy, and was the first overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to charity, in March 2003, the NBA renamed its award for outstanding charitable efforts in honor of Robinson. Winners of the NBA's Community Assist Award receive the David Robinson Plaque, with the inscription Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson who improved the community piece by piece. The award is given out monthly by the league to recognize players for their charitable efforts. Robinson was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Sept. 11, 2009, as part of argubly the greatest class inducted, joining legendary coach Ben Carnevale as Navy representatives of the Hall of Fame. The Mids were paired with eventual NCAA Champion Holy Cross in the first round in New York City. Navy led the Crusaders by eight points in the second half, but wilted under Holy Cross depth and fell, The game was the closest for the Crusaders in their march to the title. The Crusaders were led by past NBA greats Bob Cousy, Doggie Julian and George Kaftan. In the Mids consolation contest, Wisconsin s Glen Selbo s basket in the final seconds propelled the Badgers to a win in the East Regional consolation game. Ken Shugart and Cy Waldrop scored 14 and 13 points, respectively for the Navy attack East Region First Round Holy Cross 87, Navy 74 Navy was forced to wait six more years for its second NCAA Tournament appearance, drawing Holy Cross again in a firstround East Regional matchup in Philadelphia. The Mids were led by the dynamic duo of Don Lange and John Clune, who averaged a combined 43.2 points per game entering the contest. Holy Cross boasted another stacked roster, led by Catholic All- Americans Early Markey and Togo Palazzi. The contest lived up to the billing and Lange and Clune combined for 48 points (Lange 28, Clune 20). However, the Navy duo s output was matched by Palazzi and Markey, who combined for 47 points (Palazzi 30, Markey 17). In an up-and-down contest, Holy Cross outscored Navy at the free throw stripe, 27-14, for the difference in the contest and an decision in Holy Cross favor East Region Finals Navy 85, [19] Connecticut 80 Navy 69, Cornell 67 [12] La Salle 64, Navy 48 The 1954 NCAA Tournament was the last go-around for Navy superstars Don Lange and John Clune and the duo would not disappoint. Connecticut entered the contest with a 23-2 record, a No. 19 national ranking and were the Yankee Conference champions. However, boasting an outstanding offensive attack, the Mids upset the Huskies and moved into the East Region Finals with an impressive win. John Clune scored the third-most points in NCAA Tournament history (at the time) with 42 and Don Lange and Ed Hogan chipped in with 18 and 11, respectively. The Mids converted 23-of-32 free throws to hang on for the win. An East Regional semifinal date with Cornell in Philadelphia awaited the Mids. The Big Red entered the contest with an 18-6 and had defeated the Mids handily, 73-61, in early January. None of that really mattered to the Mids, as Navy held on for a victory over the Big Red. Lange (29) and Clune (21) continued their onslaught, combining for 50 points, outdueling Cornell s Lee Morton, who paced the Big Red with 34 points. A trip to the Final Four was on the line in Navy s next contest, a matchup with 12th-ranked La Salle and its All-American, Tom Gola. Navy struggled all game from the field, but were tied with the Explorers at halftime, La Salle then blew the game open in the second half, outscoring the Mids, for the final margin. Navy shot just 17-of-66 (.258) from the field and was outrebounded, John Clune scored 16 points, but the other half of Navy s sensational duo, Don Lange, was held to just three points on 1- of-6 shooting. Gola led La Salle with 22 points and 24 rebounds. Unfortunately for Navy, the Mids couldn t keep up its offensive success in its next outing, a overtime setback to Boston University. Trailing at intermission, Navy battled back to take a lead late in the second half. However, BU s Ed Washington (14 points, 19 rebounds) and Jack Leaman (13 points) were too much for the Mids. Metzler scored 16 points for Navy and Gary Bagnard tallied 11 points. The Mids suffered a huge blow in the contest when Richard Johnson played just 18 minutes after suffering an ankle injury. Navy would come back and win the regional third-place game with a triumph over Saint Joseph s. Jay Metzler led Navy with 18 points, while Richard Brown and Hank Egan contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. As the No. 13 seed in the Midwest, the Mids recorded one of the biggest upsets in tournment history in the first round with a resounding victory over fourth-seeded Louisiana State. Navy s trio of David Robinson, Vernon Butler and Doug Wojcik scored 56 points and grabbed 30 rebounds, while picking apart the Bayou Bengals on offense and defense. The performance left LSU head coach Dale Brown heaping praise on the Mids. It wasn t a fluke. The points are almost incredible. They totally dominated us. You have moments of embarrassment. That s what this is like. The win set up an intra-state showdown between fifthseeded Maryland and its All-American, Len Bias, and 13thseeded Navy and its All-American, David Robinson. Navy led the Terrapins, 55-51, with seven minutes to play, but went ice cold down the stretch and the Terps escaped with a victory. With Bias shadowing Robinson, the 6-11 sophomore was held to 22 points and eight rebounds, while Vernon Butler added 12 points and eight rebounds. Bias paced Maryland with 20 points and eight rebounds. The setback set Navy up for the most successful season in service academy history in East Region Finals (Elite 8) [17] Navy 87, Tulsa 68 [17] Navy 97, [9] Syracuse 85 [17] Navy 71, Cleveland State 70 [1] Duke 71, [17] Navy 50 Navy basketball fans faced a double-edged sword in All five starters and the top three reserves returned from the 1985 squad that was five points from advancing to the Sweet 16. With a schedule that included St. John s, Syracuse, DePaul and Georgia Tech, the Midshipmen had their work cut out for them. Led by a lethal combination of stifling defense and an efficient offense, Navy more than answered the call, earning the school s seventh NCAA Tournament bid. In the opening round, Navy overwhelmed 10th-seeded Tulsa, Navy shot 64.0 percent (32-of-50) from the field, and was led by the trio of David Robinson, Vernon Butler and Kylor Whitaker. The three combined for 70 points, 24 rebounds and 15 assists in the rout. The Mids outscored Tulsa, 46-30, in the second half, setting up a rematch with Syracuse on the Orange s cavernous home court, the Carrier Dome. Despite falling to the Orange in December, Navy came out firing. Leading by one at halftime, 32-31, Navy exploded for 65 points in the second half, pulling away from the Orange and silencing a partisan Syracuse crowd, Robinson dominated Orange center Rony Seikaly with 35 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocked shots and three steals. Seikaly finished with four points and four rebounds before fouling out in 27 minutes of action. Butler added 23 points and Cliff Rees scored 14 points in just 18 minutes. The Mids shot a remarkable 68.0 percent (17-of-25) in the second half and went 41-of-52 (.788) from the free throw line, including 31-of-38 (.816) in the decisive second half. Navy was probably expecting to see third-seeded Indiana in the regional semifinals, but a pair of upsets by 14th-seeded Cleveland State propelled the Vikings into the regional semifinals for a surprise matchup with the seventh-seeded Midshipmen. Navy surged to a nine-point halftime advantage, but saw Cleveland State whittle the lead away in the second half. The Vikings took a lead late in the contest, before Robinson s turn-around jumper with six seconds left gave Navy a one-point victory sending the Mids into the regional finals. Robinson (22 points, 14 rebounds, 9 blocks) and Kylor Whitaker (23 points, 10 assists) paced Navy into the Round of Eight. In order to advance to the national semifinals in Dallas, Navy had to get past everyone s preseason selection, Duke. The Blue Devils entered the game as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation and a lineup that would feature four players that would earn All- America honors during their time on campus. National Player of the Year Johnny Dawkins helped Duke put an end to Navy s remarkable season, by scoring 28 points in a defeat of the Mids. Navy couldn t get its offense untracked, shooting just 39.6 percent from the field and being outrebounded, Robinson closed out his junior campaign with 23 points and 10 rebounds, but was the only Navy player in double figures. Despite the loss, Navy had a fan in Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, an Army grad. It s sensational what Navy s done this year, said Kryzewski. To win 30 games and play for a spot in the Final Four at a service academy is remarkable. Vernon Butler ended his career as the school s all-time leading scorer and rebounder (only to be unseated by Robinson the next year) Southeast Region First Round Michigan 97, Navy 82 After six seasons as an assistant coach to Paul Evans, Pete Herrmann was elevated to head coach in the spring of He was well-aware of the large shoes he was expected to fill. Herrmann didn t disappoint. The Mids were making their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time ever and were led by the game s most dominating player, senior David Robinson. Facing a difficult schedule that included Atlantic Coast Conference champion N.C. State, Big Ten power Michigan State, NCAA Tournament team Idaho State, No. 1-ranked UNLV and national power Kentucky, Navy advanced to the tournament by winning the CAA Tournament, posting a 13-1 regular-season league mark. Drawing the No. 8 seed in the Southeast, Navy faced No. 9 seed Michigan in the first round. Despite shooting 58.1 percent (18-of-31) in the first half, Navy found itself trailing, 49-44, at the break, in large part to Michigan s eight three-point field goals. The Wolverines slowly started to pull away in the second half, but it became apparent that Robinson would record one of the greatest performances in NCAA Tournament history. Robinson scored 50 points on 22-of-37 shooting, a total that still ranks as the sixth-best single-game NCAA Tournament scoring total and the best since the 1971 tournament. He added 13 rebounds and two blocks, putting a stamp on one of the greatest careers in NCAA history. Unfortunately, Michigan s Garde Thompson went 9-of-12 from three-point land for 33 points and Gary Grant and Glen Rice added 26 and 21 points, respectively, to lead the Wolverines to a victory. Michigan shot 35-of-60 (.583) from the field, including 12-of-20 (.600) from long distance. Navy won the rebounding battle, 42-33, which included 25 offensive rebounds, but the advantage was offset by Navy s 38.6 percent shooting in the second half. Prior to his graduation in 1987, just nine players in NCAA 149

40 NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY history scored more points than Robinson s 2,669. Robinson still currently owns 48 school records West Region First Round [5] Missouri 76, Navy 53 Returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven years, Navy enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in Opening the year just 5-10 and 0-3 in the Patriot League, head coach Don DeVoe inserted freshman point guard Brian Walker into the lineup and Navy s fortunes turned around. The Mids won 12 of their last 14 games entering the NCAA Tournament, drawing No. 1-seed Missouri in the West Region first round. Navy made a game of it in the first half against the athletic Tigers, trailing by three at the break, However, Missouri pulled away in the second half for a victory. The Tigers held Navy to just 27.8 percent (20-of-72) from the field, including 21.2 percent (7-of-33) from long distance. Missouri also outscored the Mids, 26-6, from the free throw line. T.J. Hall and Jimmy Hamilton scored 15 and 14 points for Navy, while Jevon Crudup, Melvin Booker and Kelly Thames combined for 53 points and 32 rebounds for the Tigers Southeast Region First Round [2] Utah 75, Navy 61 Navy was turning into the premier programs in the Patriot League and was appearing in its second NCAA Tournament in four years. The Mids drew second-seeded Utah with its future NBA stars Keith Van Horn and Michael Doleac holding down the frontcourt. Navy entered the contest on a nine-game win streak and owned a 10-2 Patriot League mark. The Mids were 20-8 overall, just the sixth time in school history that Navy had won 20 games in a season. Navy jumped out to an 8-5 lead just three minutes into the game, but then went scoreless for the next six-and-a-half minutes as Utah embarked on a 14-0 run. The Utes would lead by as much as 18 in the first half, before setting in for a halftime lead. Navy shot just 9-of-34 (.265) in the first half, while the Utes went 14-of-25 (.560) from the field. Navy would get no closer than 13 points in the second half and Utah coasted home for a decision. Navy shot just 24- of-76 (.316) from the field, while Utah was 27-of-47 (.574). Navy outrebounded the Utes, 40-36, including a 22-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Hassan Booker paced Navy with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Brian Walker closed out his sensational career with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Doleac led a balance Ute attack with 19 points, while Van Horn contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds. Navy closed the season with a 20-9 mark, its second 20-win season in three years East Region First Round {1] North Carolina 88, Navy 52 Navy appeared in its second consecutive NCAA Tournament in the 1998 season after another outstanding regular season.
