12 SEAHAWKS NEWS & NOTES #51 LOFA TATUPU NO LOAFIN AROUND For Seahawks MLB Lofa Tatupu, loafing on the field isn t an option. Although some considered him undersized before the draft, Tatupu has used hard work and football instincts to lead the Seahawks in total tackles with 105. Tatupu also registered 4.0 sacks and three interceptions. Tatupu led team with a career high 13 tackles versus New York and versus Philadelphia, his 38-yard interception returned for a touchdown contributed to a 42-0 shut out in Philadelphia and a share of the network s Horse Trailer Award. He helped Seattle outscore Philadelphia and San Francisco 83-3 marking the largest margin of victory over consecutive games in club history. Given the task as a rookie middle linebacker making all of the defensive calls, Tatupu became only the second rookie in team history to lead the team in tackles and the first since Terry Beeson registered 134 in Tatutpu earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for December/January. #56 LEROY HILL HILL TOPPING Although Seahawks rookie LB Leroy Hill has started just nine games, he had a knack for finding the quarterback and flirted with topping the Seahawks list for most sacks by a rookie. The performance marked Jurevicius second-career game with 100 or more yards receiving (100 vs. Atlanta, 12/6/02). His nine receptions eclipsed his previous best of eight catches in a game which he had posted twice (vs. Atlanta-12/6/02, vs. Green Bay-1/6/02). Jurevicius matched that 137 effort with the same yard total versus the N.Y. Giants (11/27) including two TDs. He led the team with a career-high 10 TDs. He also set a season career high with 55 receptions and his total of 694 yards fell just 13 yards shy of setting a career high. Holmgren guided the club to a 13-3 record, best in club history while securing the franchise s first-ever playoff bye with home homefield advantage. The Seahawks have now recorded five winning seasons under Holmgren s direction. This season, the Seahawks have set a franchise record with 11 consecutive victories. Holmgren s 13 wins also match the most of his career. While head coach of Green Bay, Holmgren led the Packers to consecutive Super Bowls in 1996 and 1997 after finishing the regular season with 13-3 records. The Seahawks enter the postseason for the third consecutive season. During that run, Holmgren has guided the Seahawks to a record, best in the NFC over that span. Seattle finished 10-6 in 2003 and won the NFC West with a 9-7 record in Holmgren originally joined the Seahawks as Executive VP/General Manager and Head Coach on January 9, Following the 2002 season, Holmgren decided to focus exclusively on coaching and relinquished his duties as general manager. In his first season with the Seahawks, Holmgren helped guide the club into its first postseason since 1988, breaking a 10-year playoff drought. The 9-7 record was the best since Holmgren s 2003 squad finished with 10 wins, just the third time in franchise history and first time in 17 years the Seahawks posted as many wins. The 8-0 record at Qwest Field was the first time in history the club had gone undefeated at home, a feat accomplished again in Holmgren took control of the Seahawks following one of the most successful coaching stints in league history. As head coach of the Green Bay Packers from he posted a (.670) regular-season record, a 9-5 (.643) postseason mark, and two Super Bowl appearances, including a victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI played in New Orleans. By winning at least one game in five consecutive postseasons, ( ) Holmgren joined John Madden ( ) as the only coaches in league history to reach that accomplishment. From , Holmgren s Packers posted an NFL-best record, finished first in the NFC Central Division three times, second once and posted a 7-3 mark in the playoffs. In 20 NFL seasons ( Seattle, Green Bay, San Francisco) Holmgren s teams posted a record, hit double digits in the win column 12 times, made the postseason 15 times, won three Super Bowls (XXIII, XXIV, XXXI), and reached two other Super Bowls (XL & XXXII). He also totaled three touchdowns. His most heroic performance came at Washington where he totaled nine receptions for 106 yards after sustaining a broken rib on his first reception of the game. In six games, Jackson still finished fourth on the team with 38 receptions for 482 yards with three scores. The biggest free agent pickup in the NFL this season may have been JOE JUREVICIUS who played a enormous role in keeping the receiving corps together when Jackson and Engram missed games. Jurevicius led the team with 10 receiving touchdowns and set a career high with 55 catches for 694 yards. D.J. HACKETT played a big role during the core of the season with Jackson and Engram out as well. Hackett posted career highs with 28 receptions, 400 yards and two touchdowns. Hackett started three games and played in all 13 after being activated at Washington (10/2). PETER WARRICK saw action in 14 games with five starts serving mostly as the club s receiver in four and five-wide sets. PORK CHOP WOMACK, sidelined most of the first part of the season with injuries, is the top backup at both guard and tackle positions. Jones and Locklear helped Seattle to a club-record 320 rush yds. and two 100-yd. rushers for only the third time in team history vs. Houston (10/16). The line did not allow a sack in three games this season. At Kansas City (8/27), Womack injured his left triceps in the preseason and then strained his quad at St. Louis (10/9), opening the door for LOCKLEAR to move into the starting role. WAYNE HUNTER works both sides, but primarily behind Jones and was active for the final game at Green Bay. RAY WILLIS, this year s fourth-round choice was active for the final game at Green Bay. Hutchinson was selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl in Veteran CHRIS GRAY, who is Seattle s all-time leader with 106 consecutive regular-season games, is entrenched at right guard. The versatile PORK CHOP WOMACK is the top backup at both positions. CENTERS 65 Spencer, Chris R Mississippi 61 Tobeck, Robbie Washington State Although he doesn t have Pro Bowls on his resume, ROBBIE TOBECK is considered the leader of one of the premier offensive lines in football. An alternate to the Pro Bowl this season, he helped Seattle to a club-record 320 rush yds. and two 100-yd. rushers for only the third time in team history vs. Houston (10/16). He is backed up by this year s first-round draft choice CHRIS SPENCER (26th overall). He has great mobility and strength for a guy playing that position, said Holmgren. You talk to people that know offensive lineman around the league and it is pretty unanimous on his potential. TIGHT ENDS 83 Hannam, Ryan Northern Iowa 88 Mili, Itula Brigham Young 86 Stevens, Jerramy Washington JERRAMY STEVENS took over starting duties after a strong offseason and training camp play. He set single-season club records for most yards (554) and touchdowns (5) by a tight end and finished with a career high 45 receptions. RYAN HANNAM saw more playing time with Mili sidelined early and his consistency and blocking ability kept him in the lineup. Hannam caught a game-tying 1-yd.
