JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (8-7) SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31, :00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI TV: CBS Regional Coverage (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) Gus Johnson and Steve Tasker. NATIONAL RADIO: CBS Radio/Westwood One Harry Kalas and Trev Alberts. LOCAL RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and Jaguars are set to square off in the first-ever New Year s Eve contest at Arrowhead. Both clubs need a victory and plenty of help to secure a postseason berth. The Chiefs playoff hopes hinge on a win vs. Jacksonville combined with a Denver loss, a Cincinnati loss/tie and a Tennessee loss/tie. Meanwhile, Jacksonville needs a victory against the Chiefs, a loss by the N.Y. Jets, a Cincinnati loss/tie and a Tennessee loss/tie to get into the postseason dance. Head coach Herm Edwards is seeking to join Gunther Cunningham ( 98) as just the second head coach in franchise history to post nine victories in his inaugural season with the club. Kansas City is coming off a 20-9 win at Oakland (12/23), extending the club s winning streak against the Raiders to eight games. The Chiefs own an NFL-best 20-2 (.909) record in December home games and are 12-2 when their final regular season contest of the year is played at Arrowhead. Former Chiefs LB Jack Del Rio makes his debut appearance as an opposing head coach at Arrowhead. Del Rio played for Kansas City in and is now in his fourth season as Jacksonville s head coach. He guided the Jaguars to a 12-4 mark a year ago and is attempting to lead his squad into the postseason for a second consecutive season. Jacksonville is coming off a loss vs. New England (12/24). Twelve-time NFL All-Star Will Shields and three-time Pro Bowl invitee Brian Waters are the NFL s first pair of teammates at guard to make the Pro Bowl three years in a row. Thanks to that duo and the rest of Kansas City s offensive front, two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson has racked up 1,651 rushing yards on the season and needs exactly 100 yards to surpass the single-season franchise record 1,750 yards he accumulated in The Jaguars have a pair of talented backs at their disposal in RB Fred Taylor, who racked up his sixth 1,000-yard campaign in 2006, and rookie RB Maurice Jones-Drew, who has averaged ypg over the past three contests. Jacksonville currently ranks second in the NFL, averaging rushing yards per game STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS JAGUARS Total Offense (16) (10) Rush Offense (8) (2) Pass Offense (21) (26) Total Defense (15) (2) Rush Defense (18) 86.0 (3) Pass Defense (14) (10) Turnover Ratio (6t) -1 (17) Pts./Game (17t) 22.7 (9) Opp. Pts./Game (9) 15.9 (4) THE SERIES The Chiefs are 1-4 in regular season action against the Jaguars. Recognized as one of the greatest sportsmen in American history, Mr. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Mr. Hunt served as a positive influence on the game for 47 years. He was the first AFL figure to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 72, a remarkable feat considering he became involved in the game just 13 years earlier. Despite his many accomplishments and his induction into eight different Halls of Fame, Mr. Hunt s humility was one of his most unwavering and most endearing traits. Whether it was serving as a key player in the AFL-NFL merger talks, coining the term Super Bowl or having the vision to conceive of Arrowhead Stadium, few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better more than this quiet Texan. The Chiefs will celebrate Mr. Hunt s life and legacy throughout Sunday s game. For the third consecutive game, the Chiefs will wear an LH decal on their helmets to honor Mr. Hunt s memory.

Since 94, the Chiefs are 24-6 (.800) against head coaches making their regular season debuts at Arrowhead. Jack Del Rio will make his first appearance as an NFL head coach at Arrowhead on Sunday. KC has won 19 of its last 21 games against QBs in their first or second year as NFL starters who are making their initial appearance as a starter at Arrowhead. Jacksonville QB David Garrard is expected to make his first start in KC on Sunday. Kansas City owns an NFL-best 20-2 (.909) December home record dating back to 95 and has won 18 of its last 19 home games in the month of December. The Chiefs are 12-2 when their final regular season contest of the year is played at Arrowhead. KC s only losses in such contests came in 99 (OAK) and 74 (MIN). Jacksonville is on the road under Jack Del Rio, including a 2-5 mark in The Jaguars own a 2-4 alltime mark on the road in regular season finales. Chiefs Rushing Defense Always Tough at Arrowhead Kansas City s defense has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 22 consecutive home games, the longest active streak in the NFL. Dating back to the start of the 2005 campaign, the Chiefs have allowed an average of just 81.7 rushing ypg at home, the second-lowest mark in the league over that span behind only Baltimore (79.7). Kansas City will face a Jacksonville squad that ranks second in the league in rushing offense, averaging ypg. Only Atlanta (185.3) averages more rushing yards per game than the Jaguars. Over the last six games, Jacksonville has averaged 35.7 carries and rushing ypg. The Jaguars have scored 11 rushing TDs the past six games, including eight from RB Maurice Jones-Drew. KC has played 135 games at Arrowhead since 90 and permitted a team to produce 200 rushing yards just twice. Pittsburgh was the most recent team to accomplish that rare feat with 203 yards in a win (10/14/01). The Chiefs have also forced at least one turnover in 18 consecutive games, which stands as the longest active streak in the NFL. KC was +4 (5 takes/1 give) in a 20-9 win at Oakland (12/23). KC has registered at least one defensive TD the past 17 seasons and needs a score on defense this week to extend that streak to 18 straight years. The Chiefs last defensive TD was a 57-yard INT return by CB Eric Warfield at Houston (11/20/05). Opponents have registered five return scores against the Jaguars this season, including two INT returns and a fumble return. Jacksonville has also permitted two punt return TDs. However, the Jaguars are just 3-15 (.167) over the same timeframe with a negative turnover differential, including a 2-8 (.200) mark on the road. 7 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 20, Raiders 9 December 23, 2006 McAfee Coliseum 61,446 KANSAS CITY OAKLAND The Chiefs registered a 20-9 victory at Oakland, becoming the first team to ever hand the Raiders eight consecutive losses. Two days before Christmas, Oakland was in a giving mood, committing five turnovers, including three in the first half as the Chiefs jumped out to a 17-6 halftime lead. Kansas City sacked Oakland QB Andrew Walter 4.0 times, while S Jarrad Page registered a pair interceptions in the end zone to lead the Chiefs defensive charge. The Raiders got as far as the Chiefs six-yard line on their opening drive before the Kansas City defense stiffened. K Sebastian Janikowski booted a 25-yard field goal to give Oakland a 3-0 advantage for its only lead of the game. Kansas City responded against the Raiders fourth-ranked defense with a scoring march of its own. Head coach Herm Edwards rolled the dice facing a fourth-and-eight from the Oakland 33-yard line when QB Trent Green found WR Samie Parker for a 24-yard pass and a first down. Three plays later, the Chiefs signal-caller shuffled to his right and found WR Eddie Kennison open in the end zone for a six-yard touchdown. DE Tamba Hali made the first big defensive play of the night for the Chiefs as he sacked Walter and forced him to fumble on the play. DE Jared Allen recovered the fumble setting the Chiefs offense up at the Raiders 38-yard line. Kansas City used the short field to expand its lead when K Lawrence Tynes booted a 29-yard FG to give the Chiefs a 10-3 advantage. Behind the running of RB Justin Fargas the Raiders were able to put together their second scoring march of the game. But like the first, the Chiefs defense forced the Raiders to settle for a Janikowski field goal, this time from 37 yards out. Later in the second quarter Allen recorded a sack-and-strip of Walter and recovered the fumble for good measure. It took the Chiefs five plays put another TD on the board. RB Larry Johnson started the drive with a 17-yard run and then Green completed three consecutive passes. Johnson capped the drive with a one-yard scoring run for a 17-6 halftime lead. The Chiefs then put the ball in the hands of their workhorse, as Johnson carried the ball six times on the drive. Tynes capped the march with a 28- yard field goal to give the the Chiefs a 20-9 cushion. Page would intercept his second pass of the game in the end zone to end an Oakland scoring threat in the fourth quarter. 12 THE LAST TIME Jaguars 22, Chiefs 16 October 17, 2004 ALLTEL Stadium 66,413 KANSAS CITY JACKSONVILLE Kansas City let a golden opportunity to secure a victory slip through its grasp as Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich connected a on 14-yard TD pass to WR Cortez Hankton for the game-winning touchdown with 0:45 left in the fourth quarter as Jacksonville rallied for a victory. The Jaguars grabbed the momentum early, taking the opening kickoff and eating 6:26 off the clock with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that concluded with a seven-yard TD run by Leftwich. After both clubs exchanged punts, QB Trent Green fired a 52-yard strike to WR Johnnie Morton, putting Kansas City at the Jaguars 14-yard line. Morton finished the game with seven catches for 111 yards. RB Priest Holmes got the Chiefs as close as the five-yard line, but KC would have to settle for a 31-yard field goal from K Lawrence Tynes. The Jaguars took a 14-3 lead when Leftwich dumped a short pass to RB Fred Taylor in the left flat. Taylor, who was held to just 66 rushing yards by the Chiefs defense, scampered 64 yards for the score. Kansas City was unable to mount a serious scoring threat while Jaguars K Josh Scobee misfired on a 51-yard field goal attempt to keep the count at 14-3 heading into intermission. The Chiefs mounted an impressive drive to start the second half as Green connected on passes of 19 and 21 yards to WR Eddie Kennison before lobbing a 24-yard TD to TE Tony Gonzalez on third-and-16 as the Chiefs QB evaded several would-be sackers to close the gap to Green completed 22 of 33 passes on the day, good for 315 yards and a rating. The gameʼs wild finish began when Green flipped the ball forward to RB Priest Holmes just an instant before the QBʼs knee hit the ground in a play upheld by replay. However, the Chiefs missed the PAT following Holmesʼ 28-yard TD catch, giving KC a lead with 4:45 remaining. KC got the ball back at the Jacksonville 33-yard line after the Chiefs defense held on fourth-and-one. With the Jaguars out of timeouts, KC could have potentially closed the book on Jacksonville with a first down, but Holmes came up just shy of the sticks on third-and-six from the Jaguars 29-yard line. KCʼs 42-yard FG attempt went wide right, setting up Leftwich for the game-winning TD drive. KC got the ball back with 0:40 remaining, but Greenʼs final desperation heave was intercepted by CB Deke Cooper as Jacksonville claimed the win. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez tied Stephone Paige for third in Chiefs history with 49 career TD catches. He also tied Keith Jackson for sixth in the NFL record books for most career TD receptions by a tight end. RB Priest Holmes moved into second place in KC annals with 1,301 attempts from scrimmage (1,086 rushes/215 receptions), moving ahead of RB Christian Okoye (1,288). RB Ed Podalak (1,445) owns the KC record in that department. JAGUARS Leftwich, 7-yard run (Scobee kick) (13-75, 6:26). CHIEFS Tynes, 31-yard field goal (5-53, 2:30).
