The Mid-Pacific Boys Basketball Program believes that it is a privilege and honor to be a part of a TEAM, PROGRAM & COMMUNITY. We want to teach our student-athletes the proper values/manners, commitment to our overall team goals, hard work/dedication, school pride and self-confidence/perseverance to achieve excellence not only on the court, but in the classroom and out in the community. We use the game of basketball to teach life lessons and strive to help prepare our boys for the real world. Mid-Pacific Basketball is in the process of growing and the more buy-in we get from everyone involved, the more growth that we will witness in the coming years. You can be part of the story and with every story comes the good and bad, but the best part is writing the chapters and finishing the book with those who have your back. Program Summer Teams Intermediate II Head Coach: Drew Swanson, 2 nd Season Contact: Intermediate I Head Coach: Philip Farmer, 2 nd Season Contact: Junior Varsity Head Coach: Eric Kam, 3 rd Season Contact: Varsity & Program Head Head Coach: Ryan Hirata, 4 th Season Contact: Summer Try-Out Requirements The following must be completed in order to participate in Summer Try-Outs - IMPACT (Concussion) Testing o New students, those headed into 9 th & 11 th grade must take this test. The next available date to sign-up will be on Friday, May 12, 2017 at either 3:30 pm or 4:30 pm. - Updated Physical Forms - Sign-Up If you have not done so already, please Coach Ryan Hirata at with your full name, current grade ( ), weight, height and if you are a current Mid-Pacific student, or new student ASAP. If you have any questions regarding your requirements, please contact Michael Miyashiro at Please make sure to get these items completed ASAP so you are able to participate in try-outs.

Summer Try-Out Procedure & Dates All players, who have completed the above requirements and are cleared to try-out, will have three complete days with their respective grade levels. After three-days of individual drills, team continuity and instruction, our coaching staff will be in communication with each other to make the best possible decisions for the overall program when it comes to setting the rosters for each team. UNFORTUNATELY, NOT ALL PLAYERS WHO PARTICIPATE IN TRY-OUTS WILL MAKE A TEAM. *It is very important that you contact the Head Coach of the team you will be trying out for ASAP if you are unable to make the try-out dates due to legitimate reasons so they can properly address your situation. At this time, try-outs are tentatively set for the following dates and times... *Times & Location are subject to change. Monday, May 15, 2017 TBD - Intermediate 1 & 2 (Current 6th-7th) Location: TBD 5:00-7:00 pm - Junior Varsity & Varsity (Current 8th-11th) Location: Mills Gym Tuesday, May 16, :00-5:00 pm - Intermediate 1 & 2 (Current 6th-7th) Location: Outdoor Courts 5:00-7:00 pm - Junior Varsity & Varsity (Current 8th-11th) Location: Outdoor Courts Wednesday, May 17, 2017 TBD - Intermediate 1 & 2 (Current 6th-7th) Location: TBD 5:00-7:00 pm - Junior Varsity & Varsity (Current 8th-11th) Location: Mills Gym Summer League Start/End Dates & Leagues The Summer Program will start with try-outs (Monday, May 15 Wednesday, May 17, 2017) and run through mid-july 2017 depending on your team s game and practice schedule. Because there are multiple sports and teams using the gym during the summer, coaches will do their best to plan ahead and send out a primer of all the events planned on a weekly basis. Practices held on weekdays, will usually be from the 3-5 pm, or 5-7 pm range, while weekend practices will vary in time.

Intermediate I & II PUNAHOU SUMMER LEAGUE Games on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday Junior Varsity MARYKNOLL SUMMER LEAGUE Games on Wednesday, Friday & Saturday Varsity IOLANI & KALANI SUMMER LEAGUES Games on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday Summer Goals At Mid-Pacific, we treat Summer Basketball with the utmost respect and commitment as the practices, workouts and game competition provides us the opportunity to develop our overall continuity and core of our program. While we know summer will be a busy time, a high majority of our returning players have made Mid-Pacific Basketball a priority because they love the program. Of course, coaches will work with families the best we can on scheduling conflicts that does not interfere with a tremendous amount of missed time. 1. Individual & Team Fundamentals 2. Team & Program Chemistry & Commitment 3. Competing at the highest possible level 4. Developing great habits on and off the court 5. Knowing what the extra is Summer Roster Decisions - IN OUR BASKETBALL PROGRAM THERE IS ALWAYS A PLAN o We watch each and every one of our players in the program. We look at the overall body of work and make the best decisions possible to benefit the program as whole not just for the current year, but for years to come. Overall skill level Ball handling, shooting, passing, defensive footwork, etc. What role can they fill to help the team? Understanding of the game & how quickly can they pick up on schemes, concepts, terminology, etc.? Commitment, Work Ethic & Sacrifices for the TEAM Attitude Non-Verbal & Verbal

- PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE o Intermediate 2, Intermediate 1, Junior Varsity and Varsity are names of levels No matter what team you are on it is a privilege and opportunity to represent Mid-Pacific. If you love the game and are in it for the right reasons and to be part of the TEAM you are one of the many pieces to the Mid-Pacific Boys Basketball Program. In some cases, current 8th graders will be placed on the Intermediate roster, while some 11th graders may be playing Junior Varsity. Some will be given the opportunity to play on two teams based on what we think is best for the development of everyone involved. Over the years, we have had numerous cases in which players in the program had to make this sacrifice to be a part of the team and it paid dividends. - PLAYING TIME o It is a fact that some players get more playing time than others based on who gives the team the best opportunity to succeed. We trust our coaches to have the right line-ups on the floor and they will have the final decision when it comes to this. - TOUGH DECISIONS o As we mentioned earlier in the document, although we would like to keep everyone our coaching staff will be making cuts. This is always the worst part for both parties, but we as coaches do our best to be up front and provide honest feedback to all players. - SUMMER ROSTERS DIFFER FROM ILH REGULAR SEASON ROSTERS o In many cases, the Summer Roster is a separate entity from the ILH Regular Season Roster. Once the ILH Season begins, we will re-evaluate our teams via try-outs. Overall Program Expectations - MAKING THE RIGHT DECISIONS ON AND OFF THE COURT - You are a reflection of not only yourself, but the basketball program, your family and Mid-Pacific. Think hard before you act. If you know there is a risk, or the possibility of getting in trouble, stop and don t do it. The reaction can be a positive reward or negative consequence depending on what you choose. Make the right decision, not the peer pressure decision

- MANNERS & THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF RESPECT o Please, Thank You, You re Welcome, & Yes Mom, Dad, Coach can never be used enough. We expect all players to treat teammates, coaches, parents, administration, teachers, opponents and everyone they meet with respect. No player is to leave practice without shaking everyone s hand. No matter what the age, we want our players to be great people. - I-LEAPS (This is very important to our Program s success and improvement) o Initiative Preparing yourself and team for success o Learn If you learn to care, you will care to learn o Effort & Hard Work - You can control the amount you put into the tank o Accountability Being responsible for your actions and decisions o Positive Attitude & Mindset We want players who have a TEAM first mindset o Sacrificing Commitment, Communication & Time Management The great teams and players will figure out what these words mean and how to use it effectively Sacrifice making the extra pass to a wide open teammate, diving on the floor for a loose ball to get your team another possession, making a consistent effort to be at practice on time, cheering on a teammate who plays the same position you play when he makes a great play Commitment & Attendance making Mid-Pacific basketball a priority when it comes to team events and opportunities to get better (i.e. off-season workouts and conditioning). Communication getting in touch with coaches to let them know if you will be late to a practice, game or workout due to school, traffic, etc., letting teammates know if a practice time or location changes Time Management completing other tasks beforehand so you are available to make games and practices - WANTING TO BE NOT JUST A GOOD, BUT GREAT TEAMMATE o The difference between good and great teams/programs is the way they treat each other both on and off the court. You should have each other s backs at all times. Take care of your teammates, treat them with respect and you will build lifelong friendships. ABSOLUTELY NO BULLYING IS TOLERATED AND ANY INCIDENTS ARE GROUNDS FOR REMOVAL FROM THE PROGRAM.

- ROLE MODEL, MENTOR & LEADERSHIP Our older players set the tone and example for all of our programs. Be the positive role model that our CSAL, Intermediate and Junior Varsity players want to be in the future. Don t be too cool to say hi or learn each other s names. Everyone can be a leader in their own right by taking care of their responsibilities and being a great teammate. - STUDENT-ATHLETE Your dedication, habits, motivation and hard-work starts as a student in the classroom then translates onto the basketball court as an athlete. We hold our student-athletes accountable to reach their full potential in the classroom. - WHAT KIND OF PERSON DO YOU WANT TO BE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS o Not falling for Negative Peer Pressure - Who can we trust to be the leaders within the program and to do the right things not only in front of authority but behind closed doors?, Who is going to be humble after achievement?, What does your non-verbal and verbal communication say about yourself? - SOCIAL MEDIA All players should make good decisions when it comes to Instagram, Facebook, etc. Do not post anything of negative nature. - HAVE FUN & ENJOY THE GAME & EXPERIENCES - THE COACHES HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO BE POSITIVE ROLE MODELS AND GIVE 100% TO THE KIDS AND PROGRAM AND ARE HELD TO SAME STANDARDS & EXPECTATIONS o Coaches are also held to a high standard. It is understood that coaches teach basketball and play a crucial role in developing players into young men. All coaches in the Mid- Pacific Boys Basketball Program are expected to look out for the best interest of the team and program. Our coaches will be intense, raise their voices at times, and provide a challenging and disciplined environment, but at the end of the day, we will treat each player with the respect that he deserves. We want to show each player and family that comes through our program that they are important, and we will do our very best to make sure that everyone leaves the program with the best possible experience. - COACHES & PARENTS WORKING TOGETHER WITH THE SAME MESSAGE o Being a parent in the Mid-Pacific Boys Basketball Program is a great way to build the comradery for our kids. It is not only exciting for the boys to be a part of a great program, but also for the parents as well. Our goal for the parents is to make each season a great experience for all, and we are very appreciative for all that the parents do.

Parents will treat players, coaches, opponents and officials with respect and dignity. All comments by parents and their guests will exhibit encouraging and complimentary behavior from the sidelines. (Parents and guests will refrain from making comments about players mistakes or errors.) Parents will schedule a meeting to discuss player and/or team concerns directly with the head coach. Parents will make sure their son attends all practices, team activities and games on time Please sign below to acknowledge that you have read this document and bring the cut-off portion to the first day of try-outs on Monday, May 15, 2017 to turn in to the coaching staff.
