He becomes just the second Cardinal in team history to record three or more 1,000 yard seasons (Roy Green: 1983, 84, 88). Edgerrin James needs 12 yards on the ground this week to become the first Cardinal running back to reach 1,000 yards in a season since Adrian Murrell had 1,042 in James has hit the 1,000-yard mark in five of his seven years in the NFL. In the Cards win vs. Seattle, the offensive line did not allow a sack while the defense took down Matt Hasselbeck three times. It was the first time all year that Seattle s defense was held without a sack and also the first sack-free game for the Arizona offense. The team marked the occasion with 7-point win over the visiting 49ers that saw Arizona jump out to an early lead and then withstand a furious last-minute comeback attempt by San Fran. QB Kurt Warner upped his mark as a starter vs. the Niners to 7-0 with a 3-TD, 301-yard performance while RB Edgerrin James rushed 26 times for 73 yards and a TD in his regular season debut for he Cards. WR Larry Fitzgerald led the way at receiving. After 49ers rookie TE Vernon Davis capped the game-opening drive with a 31-yard TD catch from Alex Smith, Arizona answered with a 74-yard drive that ended on a 2-yard Warner pass to WR Troy Walters. On the ensuing drive, LB Orlando Huff forced a Frank Gore fumble that Gerald Hayes scooped up and returned to the SF 5. Three plays later, James dove in from a yard away to make it San Fran s next drive ended when Davis fumbled and DT Darnell Dockett recovered at the SF 41. That led to a 6-yard Warner-to-Anquan Boldin TD pass late in the opening quarter. The Cardinals, who went all of 2005 without a first quarter TD, suddenly had scored three. The team hadn t scored on its first three possessions of a game since 1993 and hadn t notched three first quarter scores since Early in the second, Gore scored on a 4-yard run that made it but a 36-yard Neil Rackers FG extended the lead to at the half. Midway through the third, San Fran CB Walt Harris made a pivotal play when he sacked Warner, forcing a fumble that he recovered at the AZ 7. Two plays later, Gore plowed it in from 2 yards out to make it a 3-point game. The Cards answered though with a long drive (10 plays, 86 yards) that ended when Warner hit TE Adam Bergen with a 7-yard TD pass. Early in the 4 th, Niners kicker Joe Nedney missed a 34-yard FG that would have made it but came back on the next drive to hit a 22-yarder that was set up by a 60-yard Arnaz Battle punt return and trimmed the AZ lead to 7 with 8:52 to play. From there the Cards embarked upon a 13-play, 68-yard drive that chewed up 7:02 and ended with a 30-yard Rackers FG that made it a two-score game. Out of time outs and down 10, a 46-yard pass from Smith to Antonio Bryant put the Niners at the AZ 26 with :34 left and Nedney kicked a 44-yarder on first down to give them a chance. The chances increased when SF recovered the on-side kick but two long passes into the end zone from the AZ 36 fell incomplete to preserve the win that placed Arizona at 1-0 for the first time since ERS CARDINALS Team Qtr. 3 LAST WEEK S GAME CARDS VS. BRONCOS Game 14 Broncos 37, CARDINALS 20 December 17, 2006 University of Phoenix Stadium (63,845) The Cardinals closed their inaugural home slate at University of Phoenix Stadium with a loss to the Broncos that dropped them to Arizona entered the contest on a 2-game win streak and had won 3 of its last 4 but Denver scored on 7 of its first 9 possessions to snap its 4- game losing streak. In a battle of rookie QBs, Jay Cutler passed for 2 TDs and an INT while Matt Leinart was picked off twice with no TDs for the Cardinals. Cutler put Denver up 7-0 with his 54-yard TD pass to Javon Walker on Denver s 3 rd offensive snap. On Arizona s next play, Leinart was INT d by Champ Bailey who returned it to the AZ 25 setting up a Jason Elam FG that made it 10-0 early in the first. After another Elam FG on Denver s next drive made it 13-0, Neil Rackers put the Cardinals on the board with a 49-yard FG. On the ensuing Broncos possession deep in their own end, DE Chike Okeafor hit RB Tatum Bell in the backfield forcing a fumble that DE Antonio Smith scooped up and returned for a TD that made it a game. Denver responded by moving 66 yards in 13 plays and Elam s 3 rd FG of the game made it at intermission. Despite Denver s advantage in total yards and 12-minute edge in time of possession, Arizona trailed by just 6 at halftime and seemed to seize momentum on the 3 rd play of the 2 nd half when FS Robert Griffith INT d Cutler and returned it to the DEN 28. When the Cards could not move the ball, Rackers hit a 40-yard FG but a holding penalty pushed it back 10 yards and his 50-yard try was no good. From there, the Broncos moved 60 yards and capped the drive on Cutler s 10-yard TD pass to Rod Smith. Down 23-10, Arizona had to settle for a 38-yard Rackers FG on the next drive after Bryant Johnson dropped a 3 rd down pass in the end zone. Quincy Morgan then returned the kickoff 64 yards to the AZ 29 and that led to a 1-yard Mike Bell TD run. A 1-yard Edgerrin James TD run on the ensuing drive made it a 10-point game with 7:50 to play but Denver s offense answered with an 11-play, 62-yard drive than ended on Bell s 2 nd rushing TD of the day. Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin had 60 receiving yards on 5 catches to top the 1,000-yard plateau for the 3 rd time in his career and joined Roy Green as the only Cardinals to record three 1,000-yard campaigns. BOLDIN AMONG THE ELITE Since joining the league in 2003 as Arizona s second-round draft pick, Anquan Boldin has accumulated 334 receptions, the fifthmost in the NFL during that span (despite playing in fewer games than anyone in the top 10). A Pro Bowler in 2003, Boldin has recorded over 100 receptions in two of his first three seasons in the NFL. Last season, Boldin broke his own previous record for receptions in a season, recording 102 for 1,402 yards. Boldin s rookie total of 101 tied the franchise record. Boldin recorded nine receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown against Minnesota on 11/26. It marked his 18 th career 100-yard performance, tying him for the third-most in franchise history. It s the third time in his four-year career that Boldin has hit the 1,000 yard mark. Only one other person in team history has recorded 1,000 yards three times or more in his career (Roy Green, 1983, 84, 89) With Edgerrin James only 12 yards shy of his sixth 1,000 yard season, it would mark only the 5 th time in team history that the team has finished with 1,000 yard receiver and running back. 1,000 1,000 Year Receiver Rusher 1998 Frank Sanders 1,145 Adrian Murrell 1, Roy Green 1,555 Ottis Anderson 1, Roy Green 1,227 Ottis Anderson 1, Pat Tilley 1,040 Ottis Anderson 1, Anquan Boldin 1,027 Edgerrin James BOLDIN COLLECTING 100 S Anquan Boldin recorded his third 100-yard game of 2006 in Minnesota on 11/26 and the 18 th of his career. 5 THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY While the team looks ahead to its final two games, it s hard not to think of what might have been had three straight home games earlier in the season ended differently. One play would have made the difference in each and may have changed the complexion of the Cards 2006 season. 9/24 vs. St. Louis: Trailing 16-7 heading into the 4 th quarter, the Cards made it a game when Edgerrin James scored on a 6-yard run with 4:13 to play. A Marc Bulger fumble turned it over to Arizona at the St. Louis 30 with 1:58 left. The Cards moved to the 18 in two plays and were in position for a game-winning FG when Kurt Warner fumbled and the Rams recovered to clinch the victory. 10/8 vs. Kansas City: In Matt Leinart s first career start, the Cards jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and led entering the fourth. A Chiefs FG tied it with 5:07 remaining and a 78-yard gain on a screen pass to Larry Johnson led to a go-ahead FG with 1:36 to go. Leinart moved the Cards to the KC 33 in the closing seconds but Neil Rackers 51-yard game-tying FG was wide right. 10/16 vs. Chicago: On Monday night against the 5-0 Bears, the Cardinals led 20-0 at the half thanks to two Leinart TD passes and a pair of FGs. Arizona led 23-3 with 16 minutes to play before the Bears scored a pair of defensive TDs on fumble returns and then took a lead on Devin Hester s 83- yard punt return with 2:58 to play. Leinart again marched the Cards downfield but Rackers 40-yard go-ahead FG try with 0:52 left was wide left. 9 AGENT 99 Entering this season, safety Adrian Wilson had two touchdowns in his previous five NFL seasons a 61-yard INT return at Washington on 1/6/02 and a 35-yard fumble return vs. New Orleans on 10/3/04. He has not only matched that figure in 2006 but nearly gone the length of the field on each. The more recent of those two TDs came at Minnesota on 11/26 when he scooped up a fourth quarter fumble by Chester Taylor and raced 99 yards for a TD. Wilson also had a franchise record 99-yard INT return for a TD off Michael Vick in Arizona s game at Atlanta on 10/1/06. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Wilson is the first player in NFL history to record two touchdowns of 99+ yards in the same season without the benefit of a kickoff return TD. Wilson becomes just the fifth player since the 1970 NFL merger to record two 99+ yard scores in the same season. The four others all scored on kickoff returns. However, this season another safety by the name of Wilson is trying to make a reservation for his name in the Ring. Strong safety Adrian Wilson has emerged as one of the premier defensive backs in the NFL. Since 2005, Wilson has recorded 12.0 sacks, the most by any defensive back in that span. His 8.0 in 2005 set a new NFL record for sacks by a defensive back and in 2006, Wilson has recorded four. Wilson is the only player in the NFC to have recorded four sacks and four interceptions this season. Wilson is widely considered one of the best safeties in the league by his peers but he has never been named to a Pro Bowl. Hayes has also recorded three interceptions and two fumble recoveries this season. A new name to the elite inside linebackers of the NFL, Hayes is beginning to generate attention for his consistent play. Recently he was named as a Pro Bowl pick by Pete Prisco on CBSSportsline.com. Prisco also named Wilson and safety Aaron Francisco for his special teams play. BIG PLAY BRYANT JOHNSON Bryant Johnson has three plays of over 50 yards this season including a 56-yard touchdown on the Cardinals first offensive play from scrimmage vs. Seattle (12/10). In last week s game vs. Denver, Okeafor forced a Tatum Bell fumble that was recovered by Antonio Smith and returned four yards for a touchdown. Okeafor also had six tackles, the most of any Cardinals defensive lineman vs. Denver. Okeafor now has 44 tackles, nine short of his career-high 53 set in 2004 with the Seahawks. Okeafor and the Cardinals face the 49ers this weekend, the team that drafted him in the third round of the 1999 draft. Cardinals vs. 49ers Page 10 of 37

Dansby recorded a team-high 12 tackles in the Cardinals win over the Seahawks and two weeks before when the Cards were in Minnesota he recorded another team-high 10 tackles and two sacks. Dansby has recorded 78 tackles this season, even though he has started only seven games and was inactive for two contests. DEALING LONG TERM The Cardinals have locked up 17 of 22 regular starters to contracts through 2007 or longer. Eight members of the offense and seven members of the defense are signed through 2008 or longer. The Cards signed DT Darnell Dockett and LB Gerald Hayes to five-year extensions earlier this season, locking up both players through On offense, center Nick Leckey will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season and left tackle Leonard Davis will become an unrestricted free agent. 12 MR. SMITH HITS BIG SCREEN Antonio Smith, the Cardinals 5 th round draft choice in 2004, has been a key contributor to the Cardinals defense since the line lost DE Bertrand Berry. In last week s game vs. Denver, Smith picked up a Tatum Bell fumble that was caused by fellow DE Chike Okeafor and returned it four yards for a touchdown. It was Smith s first career touchdown and put the Cardinals within three points of the Broncos. FRANCISCO MAKING WAVES Safety Aaron Francisco has gone from a long shot to even make a roster, to one of the Cardinals most versatile players. In 2006, Francisco has played in every game and is widely used as a third safety with along with Adrian Wilson and Robert Griffith in nickel packages. Francisco is also the leader in special teams tackles with 20. Francisco has begun to garner attention for his special teams play. Pete Prisco named Francisco to his Pro Bowl roster on CBSSportsline.com. Against the Lions on 11/19, Francisco recorded his second interception of 2006, picking off a pass that was deflected by Gerald Hayes in the Cardinals red zone. Francisco s first career interception came in front of a national audience on Monday Night Football. CARDS SACK ATTACK Many people thought the Cardinals pass rush was dead when the team placed DE Bertrand Berry on injured reserve with a torn triceps muscle. However, the loss of Berry has only meant the rise of the rest of the Cardinals defensive line. Chike Okeafor sacked Matt Hasselbeck on 3 rd down on the Seahawks final drive of the game, forcing a 4 th - and-20 situation for the Seahawks who would then turn the ball over on downs to end the game. Last week, Okeafor sacked Denver s Jay Cutler while forcing a fumble. Okeafor has recorded 4.5 sacks in the last three games. Darnell Dockett recorded his second sack of the season while forcing Hasselbeck to fumble. DT Gabe Watson picked up the loose ball. The Cardinals drove the ball to the Seattle 24, but Matt Leinart s pass intended for Larry Fitzgerald was intercepted. Antonio Smith also recorded a sack in the second quarter vs. Seattle. It was Smith s second full sack of the year, giving him 2.5 for the season.
