1 NCAA Rules Presentation 2016 New Rules and Clarifications Critical Scoring Area Rule 8 Changed from 15m to 12m (fan) above goal line extended Extends straight down from fan to end line 2 The Dots Rule 1, Section 9 Two small circles (5-6 inches in diameter) 5 yards from the hash marks on goal line extended (toward end line and perpendicular to goal line) White or single contrasting color May be temporary marks Free positions below the goal line extended and in the critical scoring area shall be taken at the closest dot 3 1

Continuous through overtime and not reestablished at the coin toss before overtime Only the team that is awarded the alternate possession may call a timeout Arrow changes on restart whistle If the team awarded alternate possession commits a subsequent foul, they lose both possession and their right to call timeout Possession means both the ball and the arrow 10 Alternate Possession Cont d. Offsetting fouls are called and goalkeeper is outside of goal circle, above goal line extended Goalkeeper may go back into her goal circle Offsetting fouls are called and goalkeeper is outside of goal circle, below goal line extended Goalkeeper may not go back into her goal circle Must remain at the spot she was when whistle blew

6 Empty Stick Check Rule 6, Section 2(c) Blatant empty stick checks not initially playing the ball but rather checking the opponent s stick to prevent the opponent from playing the ball shall be called Incidental contact during 50/50 balls shall not be called 16 Body Ball Rule 6, Section 2(g) May use any part of the body to stop or otherwise control the ball Exceptions may not use hand or head Minor Foul May NOT use any part of the body to stop a shot Major Foul Goalkeeper Exception Outside of the Goal Circle May use her body to stop a shot outside of the goal circle May not bat, throw, catch or carry the ball with her hand when outside of the goal circle
7 Horizontal Stick Rule 6, Section 1(f) Illegal = Defender initiates stick to body contact with stick at 3 and 9 o clock and hands are apart Legal = hands are together (touching) and hands are initiating the contact Defender can initiate stick to body contact as long as: Stick is not at 3 and 9 o clock Stick is not being used to hit, push or displace opponent Self-Start Rule 5, Section 6 Free positions outside of the CSA, player awarded the ball may self-start Without waiting for official s whistle Within 1.5 stick lengths of the spot of the foul Must settle prior to restart (feet stationary on the ground and the ball in the head of the stick) If official has to reset, then the restart is on the whistle Example: If player attempts to self-start farther than 1.5 stick lengths from spot of the foul 21 7

Offending player must move as directed (4m away/behind) May engage player immediately upon self-start All players more than 4m from the foul must stand Repeated false starts by defenders, delays in moving 4m away/behind, or self-starts beyond 1.5 stick lengths of the spot of the foul may result in delay-ofgame 22 Self-Start Cont d. Noteworthy Boundary Examples: Legal check, ball goes out of bounds = no self-start (no foul occurred within the playing area to cause the ball to go out of bounds) Illegal check within the playing area, ball goes out of bounds = self-start (foul occurred within the playing area play shall commence at the spot of the foul) Cross-check (other type of foul) that causes player to go out of bounds = selfstart (foul occurred within the playing area play shall commence at the spot of the foul) 23 Self-Start Cont d. Foul within 4m of a Boundary Line (sideline or end line): Self-starts are permitted within 4m of a boundary line. If the player awarded the free position does not immediately selfstart then the official is expected to instruct the player(s) to move 4m in. The player awarded the free position can self-start at any point (immediately, during instruction, or after the full administration of the penalty). 24 8
