With expected starter Geno Smith out 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw, the Jets brought Matt Flynn in for a physical Friday, but did not work him out. The 30-year-old Flynn, who was dealing with a hamstring issue, was released by New England earlier this week. 1 P a g e

A signing of Flynn was not immediately imminent by the Jets, who have only rookies Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps on the roster to back up Fitzpatrick. Flynn has also been with Green Bay (twice), Seattle, Oakland and Buffalo. He threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns both Packers records in Green Bay's victory over Detroit on Jan. 1, Fitzpatrick was thrust into the starting role when Smith's jaw was broken by a punch from then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali in the Jets' locker room Tuesday. Smith had surgery to insert plates and screws in his jaw, which is not wired shut, and he is expected to miss 6-10 weeks. Enemkpali was claimed off waivers by Buffalo and Rex Ryan, the linebacker's coach last season with the Jets. Fitzpatrick played just one series in the Jets' preseason-opening 23-3 loss to the Lions on Thursday night, going 2 of 3 for 16 yards. Petty, a fourth-round pick out of Baylor, went 10 of 18 for only 50 yards and did not complete a pass for more than 8 yards. NOTES: The Jets return to the practice field Saturday after a day off Friday.... TE Jace Amaro was scheduled to have an MRI exam after injuring a shoulder against the Lions. LB Erin Henderson was also expected to have an MRI on his sprained left knee. NEWSDAY Jets bring in veteran quarterback Matt Flynn for physical (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday The search for a suitable backup quarterback continues for the Jets. In the wake of Geno Smith's fractured jaw and the team's decision to promote No. 2 quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Jets brought in veteran Matt Flynn for a physical Friday. According to a source, he did not have a workout. The issue could be his balky hamstring, which resulted in his release from the Patriots on Monday. Flynn, 30, has thrown 17 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in seven NFL seasons. He played the majority of that time with the Packers but also spent time with the Seahawks, Raiders and Bills before he signed on to be the Patriots' third-string quarterback on June 11. The Jets don't appear to be in a rush to sign another quarterback, but that hasn't stopped them from looking. Rex Grossman and Tyler Thigpen also have been cited as potential backup options, but no moves have been made. Instead, the Jets took the field in Detroit Thursday night with their current stable of quarterbacks -- Fitzpatrick, 2015 fourth-round draft pick Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps. After the Jets' 23-3 loss to the Lions, Petty stressed that his struggles on the field were just a byproduct of the NFL learning curve. "I have a lot to learn," said the former Baylor star, adding that he didn't realize he would be replacing Fitzpatrick as early as the second series of the game. "It's just a different game coming from what I was in as far as system-wise. I've made a lot of strides since the beginning of camp. I feel good about where I'm 2 P a g e

at. Not that I've mastered anything, but I'm getting good chances. There are certain plays for whatever reason I'm comfortable with and there's certain plays that kind of have my head scratching a little bit." Petty, who was 10-for-18 for 50 yards, said the more reps he gets now, the better he'll be in the future. "It's huge for me because every rep is a learning experience, whether it's good or bad," he said. "So it's about getting in there and it's a process... Just taking it for what it is and learning as much as I can." Fitzpatrick looked steady in his Jets debut, but that's mainly because he mostly was asked to hand off to running back Chris Ivory on his only drive of the night. The first-team offense did go 10 plays on its initial drive, but a third-and-1 drop by tight end Jeff Cumberland forced the unit to settle for a field goal. "I wish I would have thrown a little bit better pass on the last one, completed it and we would have stayed on the field and got seven points," Fitzpatrick said. "But I thought it was nice to get out there and establish the line of scrimmage and be physical up front like we did. "I felt comfortable. It was nice -- just the procedure of it, and to get in and out of the huddle, to run some silent count, to get the plays and the motions and everything communicated and not having any pre-snap penalties. In that regard, I thought we did a good job." Notes & quotes: A source said tight end Jace Amaro had an MRI on his injured shoulder... Linebacker Erin Henderson suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain, a source said, and is expected to miss a week... Former Jets running back Chris Johnson is scheduled to undergo a physical and work out for the Cardinals on Sunday, according to Fox Sports. Johnson, who was wounded in the shoulder during a Jan. 9 drive-by shooting in Orlando, Florida, became a free agent during the offseason after the Jets declined to pick up his second-year option. ESPN NEW YORK Free agent Matt Flynn visits with QB-needy Jets, takes physical (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York The New York Jets have to make a decision over the next week or two on whether to add another experienced quarterback to the roster. Right now, there's only one healthy player who falls into that category -- Ryan Fitzpatrick. On Friday, they started to line up contingencies, visiting with free agent Matt Flynn, who was released Monday by the New England Patriots. Flynn, 30, took a physical but didn't work out for the Jets. They wanted to examine a hamstring injury, reportedly the reason the Patriots decided to cut him. Flynn has played for three teams but has spent time with two others, earning more $18 million in his career. Not bad for a guy with 17 touchdown passes. Geno Smith's surgically repaired jaw will be a big factor in the quarterback decision. Initially, the Jets said he'd be sidelined six to 10 weeks, so the best-case scenario is he'd be ready for Week 3 of the regular season. The worst case is Week 7 -- a pretty wide gap. The doctors were able to complete the surgery without having to wire shut his jaw, which could mean a quicker recovery, according to medical experts. The current No. 2 is Bryce Petty, who "played like a rookie" in the preseason opener -- a kind description by Todd Bowles. In nine possessions with Petty (10-for-18, 50 yards) at quarterback, the Jets managed no 3 P a g e

points and four first downs. Five of the possessions were three-and-outs and another ended with a fumble on a botched handoff. Growing pains are part of the game. Petty maintained a good attitude, admitting he felt overwhelmed at times in the 23-3 loss to the Detroit Lions. He called it a learning process, saying he has to do a better job of recognizing blitzes. Bowles said there were times when Petty wasn't able to identify the "Mike" linebacker before the snap, which is pretty basic. "I've made a lot of strides since the beginning of camp," he said. "I feel good about where I'm at. Not that I've mastered anything, but I'm getting good chances. There are certain plays that, for whatever reason, I'm comfortable with. And there are certain plays that have me scratching my head a little bit." If Smith isn't ready for the season -- and he probably won't be -- the Jets can't possibly go into Week 1 with a fourth-round rookie as their backup. They have time to figure it out, but competent quarterbacks don't fall out of the sky, so they'll have to make a trade or settle for a castoff. NEW YORK POST Jets have QB Matt Flynn in for a check-up (Brian Costello) New York Post The Jets are still trying to figure out what they are going to do for a backup quarterback in the wake of Geno Smith s broken jaw. As part of that effort, the team brought free agent Matt Flynn to Florham Park on Friday to undergo a physical, according to a source. Flynn is recovering from a hamstring injury, which was the reason the Patriots cut him earlier this week. Flynn did not work out for the Jets, the source said. That is a possible indication the hamstring is still an issue. The Jets need a veteran to back up Ryan Fitzpatrick, but the pickings are slim. Flynn, Rex Grossman and Tyler Thigpen have been mentioned as options. The Jets are in no hurry to sign anyone, happy to give rookie Bryce Petty more reps in training camp. The team also could wait for roster cuts in a few weeks to see which quarterbacks hit the market. Flynn has thrown 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions over eight seasons in the NFL with the Packers, Raiders and Seahawks. Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson played just five snaps in Thursday s game in Detroit, all in the second quarter with the backups. Since Richardson is suspended for the first four games of the season, and possibly longer, coach Todd Bowles has not had him working with the starters in training camp. I wouldn t say I m used to it, he said of his second-team status. But I brought it on myself, so I ve got to handle it accordingly. In a few weeks, he won t be allowed to practice at all with the Jets. It s going to be rough, he said. I m a ball player. Once again, I brought it on myself, so I can t look back now. I can only move forward. 4 P a g e

Richardon, 24, is scheduled to be arraigned in Missouri on Aug. 31 on charges of resisting arrest for a July 14 incident that involved him going 143 mph, trying to avoid police and eventually getting caught with a loaded semi-automatic handgun in his marijuana-reeking Bentley. Rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin nearly had a sack on Thursday night of backup Lions quarterback Kellen Moore. He came in unblocked and had a clear shot on Moore but overran him. It was in my hands, and I just misjudged the quarterback s intentions and he ended up getting out, Mauldin said. It was not a great debut for Mauldin, who also had a roughing the passer penalty on third down. I m gonna work on getting my own rings, he said, and laughed. What Jets revealed about their offense in first look (Brian Costello) New York Post It would be foolish to read too much into anything that happened in Thursday s preseason opener, but the one drive by the Jets starting offense offered a clue as to what this team wants to do with the ball. Quite simply: Run, run, run. Rex Ryan may be in Western New York, but Ground and Pound lives on with the Jets. The starters were in for nine plays, and six of them were runs. Chris Ivory carried it every time, gaining 25 yards. The running game was the lone silver lining the Jets could take away from a 23-3 loss to the Lions, and it gave fans a clue what Chan Gailey wants to do with his offense. I think that s going to be our makeup, guard Willie Colon said. We want to establish the run early and set the tone. I think we were able to do that. A big part of that was the offensive line, the only group to get praise from coach Todd Bowles after the game. The Jets had the No. 3 rushing offense in the NFL last year, so it should not be surprising to see this unit do well. But it is breaking in new left guard James Carpenter and right guard has been in flux this offseason as Bowles talked about competition. That competition appears over, though, with Colon the winner. The line opened big holes for Ivory to run though as the Jets marched 41 yards on nine plays, converting a fourth down along the way. The Jets settled for a field goal after a failed pass on third-and-1. I thought we came out, we were physical, we ran the ball well, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said. I wish I would have thrown a little bit better pass on the last one, completed it and we would have stayed on the field and got seven points. But I thought it was nice to get out there and establish the line of scrimmage and be physical up front like we did. I think it went smooth in terms of getting on the same page with Nick [Mangold] up front and the guys and just the communication in and out of the huddle. Fitzpatrick replacing Geno Smith at starting quarterback probably has not altered the game plan very much. All indications were the Jets were going to be a run-first team with Smith, who had 41 turnovers in two years. The formula for the Jets is simple: play good defense, run the ball and hope the quarterback does not turn it over. Fitz is a veteran, so I think we will be balanced out just like we started and I think we have good receivers and I think we have a great running game, Ivory said. It s just about balancing the two out and having 5 P a g e

both of them doing good. Both receivers and the run game haven t been good, so I think if we establish that, it ll be a balanced offense. Backup running back Bilal Powell also had a nice night. His 19-yard run was the Jets longest play, a telling statement of how poor the passing game was. The Jets gained just 56 yards through the air, letting rookie Bryce Petty play the rest of the game after the first series. Bowles said it s too soon to being to worry about the Jets poor showing. I m not concerned, Bowles said. I mean, it s the first preseason game. We got a lot of tackling to do. If the first group had played all game on both sides of the ball and we got killed like that, I would be a little more concerned, but if this was the third preseason game, you d be a little bit concerned. But we got a lot of work to do. Jets reaction to Bills signing IK Enemkpali? Rex is Rex (Brian Costello) New York Post DETROIT There was little reaction among the Jets players to former coach Rex Ryan bringing IK Enemkpali to Buffalo one day after the Jets waived him. Rex is Rex, guard Willie Colon said. We weren t surprised. The Jets waived Enemkpali on Tuesday after he punched quarterback Geno Smith in the locker room, breaking Smith s jaw. Ryan and the Bills picked him up Wednesday, a tweak of the Jets by Ryan. But Jets coach Todd Bowles said he had no reaction to the move and the players were unfazed. He drafted him so there wasn t really a reaction, defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson said. I kind of figured it actually. I m pretty sure the whole locker room knew that was going to happen. Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, who has been the Jets top slot receiver since 2011, did not get any firstteam reps. Instead, Quincy Enunwa played the slot role with the starters. Bowles said Enunwa is a better blocker and he wanted to see him in that role. Kerley said he wasn t surprised based on how reps have been divided in training camp, but admitted he is uncertain about his role. I ll let my play do the talking, Kerley said. It s new coaches, new everything around here. Maybe they just have to get to know me. The Jets suffered a couple of injuries in Thursday night s preseason opener with tight end Jace Amaro (shoulder) and linebacker Erin Henderson (knee) leaving the game in the second half. Henderson said he sprained his MCL and will have an MRI exam Friday morning. He did not think the injury was serious and was walking without a limp in the locker room. First-round pick Leonard Williams started the game at defensive end. The No. 6 overall pick looked shaky at times. He was pushed around by the Lions offensive line on several running plays, but did get one pass rush on backup quarterback Kellen Moore. Rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin had a few mistakes in his debut. He was flagged for roughing the passer on one play and missed a sack on another despite running unblocked at the quarterback. 6 P a g e

Safety Jaiquawn Jarrett was in uniform, but did not play because of a bruised shoulder. Former Jet wide receiver Greg Salas had a nice night against his former team, including a touchdown catch. He had five catches for 92 yards and the score. The scratches for the Jets besides Muhammad Wilkerson were: QB Geno Smith (jaw), WR T.J. Graham (hamstring), WR Chris Owus u (concussion), RB Stevan Ridley (knee), CB Dee Milliner (wrist), CB Curtis Brown (hamstring), TE Steve Maneri (hamstring) and WR Devin Smith (ribs). NJ ADVANCE MEDIA Matt Flynn had physical with Jets on Friday, source confirms (Dom Consentino) NJ Advance Media With Geno Smith out with a broken jaw, the Jets seem ready to move ahead with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starting quarterback, at least for the time being. But they're still doing their due diligence on other veteran options who could be possible backups. Here's proof: Matt Flynn had a physical with the Jets on Friday, though he did not work out, a person familiar with the situation confirmed. That person spoke to NJ Advance Media on condition of anonymity. Word of Flynn's evaluation with the Jets was first reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. Smith had his jaw broken after being punched by then-teammate IK Enemkpali, who has since signed with the Bills. Smith had surgery on the jaw Thursday and only needed to have plates and screws inserted, as opposed to having his jaw wired shut. It's not yet clear how that will affect the six-to-10-week timetable for Smith's return. Flynn has had a journeyman career. He's spent parts of six seasons with the Packers, but he's also logged time with the Seahawks, Bills, and Raiders. He's only made seven career starts. Flynn had most recently signed a free-agent deal with the Patriots in June, only to be released on Monday. Flynn began training camp with the Patriots on the active/non-football injury list, and Pats head coach Bill Belichick told reporters this week Flynn had not passed his physical. The Jets have Fitzpatrick penciled in as the starter, with rookie Bryce Petty an acknowledged project who's clearly not ready as the backup. Even if the Jets were to sign Flynn, it would likely be as a stopgap until Smith returns. How did Jets' Leonard Williams fare in his preseason debut at Detroit Lions? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media The Jets' preseason-opening loss at the Lions on Thursday night was the first chance for defensive end Leonard Williams to suit up for an NFL game. 7 P a g e

Williams, the No. 6 overall draft pick this year, will replace Sheldon Richardson for at least the first four games (and maybe more) as Richardson serves an NFL-imposed suspension (however long that might last). Jets coach Todd Bowles liked what he saw from Williams in his limited action Thursday. It didn't appear Williams made any glaring errors. "He got off the ball some," Bowles said. "I've got to look at the film and see what he did." Richardson was able to observe Williams, because Richardson played just five snaps Thursday, all with the backups. Williams and Ronald Talley stated the game at defensive end, as Muhammad Wilkerson (hamstring) sat out. "He did some good things," Richardson said of Williams. "He needs to play with his hands more [while engaging offensive linemen], and not his head. He just has to get his technique up a lot more. But as far as the aggression, he did that. He handled himself." Richardson, who spoke to Williams between drives Thursday, said Williams is "not too far away" from being an effective NFL starter. The Jets have less than a month until their Sept. 13 opener against the Browns. For his part, Williams said "it's kind of hard to judge" how he played Thursday, because he only played for one quarter. "I wasn't really nervous, but I was really anxious leading up to the game," Williams said. "Especially being a rookie, I thought I was going to be able to play a lot more. I wasn't going to argue with [Bowles]. I kept wanting to tell coach I wanted to go back out there, but by then, I had already took off all my tape and stuff." Though Williams said the Jets' veteran defenders have given him positive feedback about his play in practice, he admitted the obvious about replacing Richardson: "There's added pressure being in that spot." After Thursday's game, Williams pointed out a specific area he needs to improve. "I'm still kind of thinking a little bit because I'm still not used to reading plays before they develop," he said. "That's one thing that the guys I play next to are really good at. They see the play before it happens. I'm still learning the playbook a little bit, so I'm still thinking sometimes." Film study and playing experience will help him read plays more effectively, he said. "I think it also just has something to do with time," he said. "These guys have been playing in the NFL for a while, so they get down tendencies from o-linemen the way they lean, the way their heels are off the ground [while in their pre-snap stance]. I think from just experience, I'll get it down after a while." He is realizing how much more cerebral this sport is at the NFL level. "It definitely has surprised me, especially playing the d-line position, where you think you don't have too much pressure on you," Williams said. "You really just had to play the lineman [in college] and find the ball. Now, we have to make sure that we're in our gap, make sure we slant to the right spot. There's way more thinking to do." With suspension looming, Jets' Sheldon Richardson says, 'It's going to be rough' (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media 8 P a g e

l Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson spoke to reporters after Thursday night's preseason-opening loss at the Lions a game in which he barely broke a sweat. That's because Richardson played just five snaps, all with the backups. He has been practicing with the second-string defense in training camp, as the Jets prepare for his NFL-imposed suspension, however long that might last. The NFL benched him for the first four games after he repeatedly tested positive for marijuana. The league might extend his suspension, in light of Richardson's street-racing and resisting arrest charges that soon followed his suspension announcement. The last time Richardson wasn't a starter? His freshman season at Missouri. "I wouldn't say I'm used to it," he said Thursday, of not working with the first-team defense. "But I brought it on myself, so I've got to handle it accordingly." He has already begun thinking about his four-game suspension, when he won't be allowed to even practice with the Jets. "It's going to be rough," he said. "I'm a ball player. Once again, I brought it on myself, so I can't look back now. I can only move forward." He said he hasn't heard anything from the NFL about potential additional discipline. "No, I have not," he said. "I think they're waiting until the court things get settled." Richardson is scheduled to be arraigned in Missouri, where he was arrested last month, on Aug. 31. What's the latest on Jets' Muhammad Wilkerson's hamstring? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media tml It came as no surprise that Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson didn't play in Thursday night's preseason-opening loss at the Lions. Wilkerson has returned to practice after tweaking his hamstring, but he is still recovering. So how concerned is coach Todd Bowles about Wilkerson's recovery process? Bowles addressed that topic after the game, as the Jets continue to remain wisely cautious in bringing Wilkerson back from this injury. "We'll see what happens next week" after Wilkerson receives treatment this weekend, Bowles said. "He wasn't any better or any looser [on Thursday], so we held him out. In the first preseason game, to play him five or six plays wasn't going to do us any good." Bowles alluded to Wilkerson tweaking his hamstring again while practicing this week, after the initial nonserious (to use Bowles' word) tweak. So is this a significant setback or aggravation of Wilkerson's hamstring? "I don't think so, no," Bowles said. "It was the same [tweak in his hamstring]. It just never loosened up." 9 P a g e

Anyway, there's a little confusion about what exactly happened with Wilkerson's hamstring when he returned to practice. But the bottom line is, the hamstring is still a bit tight, though it remains a non-serious injury, according to Bowles. There was no sense in the Jets playing Wilkerson on Thursday night anyway. They need him healthy for the regular season. It's not like he's auditioning for a roster spot and has to play in these preseason games. All the Jets can do is give his hamstring the treatment and time it needs. They don't want this to become an issue that lingers throughout the season. (And hamstring injuries absolutely can linger.) There's a good chance it won't linger if they limit his action in preseason games, and continue to be cautious with him, as they were Thursday. How might Geno Smith's surgery affect his return to Jets? We asked a doctor (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media ml Geno Smith on Thursday had surgery on his broken jaw, and the Jets confirmed he had to have plates and screws inserted instead of having the jaw wired shut. So: Will that affect the six-to-10-week timetable for Smith's return? No, according to Dr. James Gladstone, the co-chief of sports medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. To be clear: Gladstone did not evaluate Smith personally. But he agreed to offer his professional opinion to NJ Advance Media over the phone based on his understanding of what's known about the nature of Smith's injury. "In some respects, needing plate and screws could indicate that the injury is worse" than if Smith had needed to have his jaw wired shut, Gladstone said. "There are many fragments of bone that have to be pieced back together. That could be done better with plates and screws than with the wiring." Gladstone said the plates and screws were likely used because Smith, the Jets' quarterback, had more than one break in his jaw, which squares with a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter that said Smith's jaw had been broken in two places thanks to a punch from then-teammate IK Enemkpali. "By using the plate and screws, you're aligning it straight and putting the pieces back together sort of like jigsaw puzzle, which putting a cast on or wiring the jaw shut can't do," Gladstone said. Plates and screws also ensures "as perfect an alignment as possible" with the bones, Gladstone said. None of this, however, will likely affect the initial timetable of six to 10 weeks Smith was given Tuesday, the day of the fateful punch. The bones still have to heal. "That's a biologic process," Gladstone said. "That takes the same amount of time, whether you're just holding things in place with the wire, or whether you have it in place with the plate and screws. The timetable doesn't change." A six-week return would have Smith back in time for the Jets' Week 3 game against the Eagles. Ten weeks would take until Week 7 at the Patriots. Not that it matters all that much. Head coach Todd Bowles has said Smith's job is not guaranteed upon his return, and it also sounds like Smith is losing the locker room. 10 P a g e

Gladstone also said as long as Smith returns to action once the bones have healed, he shouldn't be at any additional risk of injury beyond the sort that football normally presents to players. "Once bone heals, it's essentially as strong as it was before," Gladstone said. "In football, you get concussions, you get neck injuries, you get call kinds of extremity injuries and joint injuries. But you rarely hear about a football player breaking his jaw, and I think that's because the helmet does protect that area of the face." Jets' Erin Henderson to be out one week with sprained MCL, per source (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media ml Inside linebacker Erin Henderson, who left the Jets' preseason loss to the Lions Thursday night with what was described as an MCL sprain, had an MRI on Friday that confirmed the injury is a grade-2 sprain, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person, who spoke to NJ Advance Media on condition of anonymity, said Henderson was expected to miss about a week of practice, and that he should be back in time for the Jets' third preseason game against the Giants on Aug. 29. Henderson's doctor apparently told him he had lifted his foot just in time to avoid tearing the ACL in his knee, the person familiar with the situation said. Henderson, whose once-promising career with the Vikings was cut short by alcoholism, was signed to a non-guaranteed contract in April with a chance to compete for a roster spot behind starters Demario Davis and David Harris. Henderson had been having a solid training camp, both with the defense and on special teams. "I've been impressed with him from day one," defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers said earlier this week. While the injury is certainly a setback, Henderson is no doubt relieved there was no structural damage. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Jets bring Matt Flynn in for physical, quarterback has hamstring injury (Seth Walder, Manish Mehta) New York Daily News The Jets brought Matt Flynn in for a physical on Friday, according to a source. The quarterback did not work out for the team. The Jets are also exploring other veteran free-agent options in the wake of Geno Smith's broken jaw that is expected to sideline him for six to 10 weeks. Flynn, rehabbing for a hamstring injury, was released by the Patriots this week. The Daily News reported Friday that the Jets had some interest in the 30-year-old QB. Though the Jets need to acquire a new backup quarterback at some point, they aren't in a rush to do so and may wait to see who becomes available later in the preseason. 11 P a g e

He famously signed a three-year, $19 million deal with the Seahawks in 2012 after backing up Aaron Rodgers for four seasons in Green Bay, but was beaten out by rookie Russell Wilson in training camp and attempted just nine passes for Seattle before being traded by the Raiders. He's bounced around the league since then, playing for the Bills and Packers. WALL STREET JOURNAL What Can the Jets Expect From Leonard Williams This Season? (Michael Salfino) Wall Street Journal ?tesla=y The Jets will be without Pro Bowl defensive end Sheldon Richardson for at least the first four games of the regular season and maybe more after a violation of the league s substance-abuse policy and a subsequent traffic-related arrest in his home state of Missouri. Fortunately, they seem to have a readymade replacement in their highly rated rookie Leonard Williams. A two-time All-American at Southern California, the 6-foot-5, 302-pound Williams was viewed by some experts to be the best player in the 2015 NFL Draft even though he fell to the Jets with the sixth overall pick. In his first chance to suit up for the Jets, in Thursday night s preseason opener against Detroit, Williams got the start in place of Richardson but only played the first quarter and failed to record a tackle or sack. As a starter, he wasn t about to see extended time in the year s first exhibition and risk injury. With that in mind, expectations that Williams will make an immediate impact should be tempered. On top of being a Top 10 pick, Williams has the pressure of being asked to fill the shoes (at least temporarily) of an All Pro who had eight sacks while anchoring one of the game s best defensive fronts last season. In the more complex NFL game, top-drafted defensive ends have generally disappointed (or had bad luck), especially as rookies. Jadeveon Clowney, last season s top overall pick, missed 12 games for the Houston Texans with a knee injury. Aside from Clowney, six of the nine previous top-drafted ends failed to register five sacks in their rookie seasons. The top-drafted defensive ends, though mostly healthy, also combined for just five Pro Bowls, and four of those were by one player: Mario Williams, drafted by the Texans but now playing for the Buffalo Bills and their new head coach, Rex Ryan.
