1 NBA COMMUNITY OUTREACH Over the years, Carolina basketball alumni have donated their time and money to a number of charitable causes near and dear to their hearts. This page repress is just a sampling of those community outreach efforts. Michael Jordan donated $1 million to the Jordan Institute of Families on the Carolina campus. Here, Jordan is pictured with the late UNC Chancellor Michael Hooker at the ceremonial opening of the Insitute. Jordan s $1 million donation was the largest gift ever given to Carolina by an active professional athlete. George Karl s Friends of Hoop organization helps to bring the community together in the Seatte and Milwaukee areas. The group sponsors the annual King Holiday Hoopfest tournam and provides a sound recruitm structure for potial candidates pur- The Rasheed Wallace Foundation s Trail Blazing for Children Awards Benefit Weekend supports the Police Athletic League and selected children s charities in Portland, Durham, N.C, and his hometown of Philadelphia. Sheed s Squad enables a large group of disadvantaged kids in Portland to enjoy lower- Kenny Smith s AIM HIGH Foundation s goal is to keep children off the streets and off drugs. Every year, Smith flies youth teams to participate in NCAA-sanctioned tournams across the country. The foundation also provides SAT prep classes, tutelage in school classes and personal guidance for future stud-athletes. Vince Carter s Embassy of Hope foundation lends financial support to causes that primarily benefit children in Toronto and his home state of Florida. The foundation sponsors turkey basket drives at Thanksgiving and Christmas gift-giving and fea- Eric Montross raised over $100,000 to build a teen activities cer in the new Children s Hospital at UNC through his annual Father s Day Basketball Camp. Curr UNC Assistant Athletic Director and former assistant coach John Lotz makes numerous charitable apperances on behalf of the basketball program and the athletic departm.
