2 NFL In my over 35-year association with professional football, I have witnessed many memorable performances. But I have not witnessed a more dominating defensive performer than Derrick Thomas. It is on rare occasion when a defensive player dictates that his opponent know where he is aligned on every snap of every game. During the 10 years that I coached Derrick, he was everything a coach or teammate could ask for. He was a fiercely competitive player who gave his team the opportunity to win by his individual performance down after down. - Former Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer With his blinding first step, legendary speed off the edge and a patented sack-and-strip maneuver that led to many of his franchise-record 45 forced fumbles, LB Derrick Thomas wasn t merely the NFL sack leader in the 90s, he was the face of a revived Chiefs franchise that awoke from its dormancy to a new era of hope and prosperity. Derrick was a player who could dominate a game, said Broncos Hall of Fame QB John Elway. His explosive talents were so great that he could dictate to an offense pass and run-blocking schemes, as well as the plays that were called. Thomas compiled a franchise-high career sacks, earned a spot on the NFL s All-Decade Team of the 90s and set the NFL single-game sack record with 7.0 QB takedowns vs. Seattle (11/11/90). The highest praise for Thomas may have come from his hero, legendary N.Y. Giants LB Lawrence Taylor. Derrick is a great linebacker, said Taylor. He is a game breaker, the guy an opposing quarterback always has to be aware of. He s going to be considered one of the best when his playing days are over. Those days ended too soon. Thomas was severely injured in a car accident on January 23, Thomas died in his hometown of Miami, Florida on February 8, 2000.

While Hunt made many lasting contributions to the game, part of his legacy will be his accidental naming of pro football s most important contest, the Super Bowl. As the story has been told and retold over the years, some of the facts have gotten lost along the way. Here are some of the most important elements of the tale in how the Super Bowl got its name... - After the AFL-NFL merger was announced in June of 1966, Commissioner Pete Rozelle appointed a committee consisting of himself, Lamar Hunt (Kansas City), Tex Schramm (Dallas) and two other owners from each league (AFL & NFL) to firm up the details of the merger agreement. Pete Rozelle and Lamar Hunt both played pivotal roles in shaping professional football. - At one of those initial merger meetings, there was a discussion about the date of the game. As the committee discussed the championship game (which ultimately became referenced as the Super Bowl), there was some confusion on whether the parties were discussing the respective AFL and NFL title games or the game between the two leagues. It was then that Hunt first recalled saying, You know, the last game, the final game... the Super Bowl. - The inspiration for Hunt s whimsical suggestion was the high-bouncing Super Ball produced by the Wham-O company. Lamar s wife, Norma, had previously purchased one for each of the Hunt children (Lamar, Jr., Clark and Sharron) and the toy had become somewhat of a craze in the Hunt household and many other homes across the country. - Hunt was later quoted as saying, Nobody ever said let s make that the name of the game. Far from it, we all agreed it was far too corny to be the name of the new title game. - In a letter from Hunt to Rozelle on July 25, 1966, Hunt urged the commissioner to coin a phrase for the title game between the two leagues. In the letter, Hunt said, I have kiddingly called it the Super Bowl, which can obviously be improved upon. - Rozelle agreed with Hunt s suggestion since he had a particular disdain for the term super. According to longtime NFL executive Don Weiss, Rozelle was a former PR man who had a keen appreciation of grammar. In Rozelle s book, super was the equivalent of gee whiz or neat. He believed that the term Super Bowl had no sophistication whatsoever. - Rozelle was initially inclined to call the game the Pro Bowl, but that moniker was already assigned to the NFL s annual all-star contest. - In the years leading up to the merger, many members of the media had billed a possible championship match-up between the two rival leagues as a World Series of Football, but Rozelle clearly did not want to have his game associated with baseball. - After much consternation and debate, Rozelle eventually dubbed the title contest between the two leagues as The AFL-NFL World Championship Game. However, Hunt s whimsical, off-the-cuff comment had taken root. In the weeks leading up to the game, headline writers had already adapted Hunt s two-word title over the much more verbose official moniker for the game. The TV networks billed the game as Super Sunday and even NFL Films tagged their film reels as being designated for the Super Bowl. - After the first two AFL-NFL World Championship Games, the term Super Bowl was officially adopted by Commissioner Rozelle and the NFL. The first game to officially be designated as the Super Bowl at the time it was played was Super Bowl III between the AFL s Jets and the NFL s Colts. The first two championship games were retroactively named Super Bowls I & II. Hank Stram and Vince Lombardi exchange pleasantries prior to Super Bowl I. 7 CHIEFS ON SPORTS ILLUSTRATED COVERS The Chiefs have been featured prominently on the cover of Sports Illustrated on 10 different occasions in franchise history. Three of those SI cover appearances came courtesy of Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana, who was acquired in a trade with San Francisco in 93 and eventually guided the Chiefs to an AFC Championship Game appearance that season. Here are some of the highlights of Kansas City s Sports Illustrated cover appearances... Chiefs Paint New York Red (November 24, 1969): Kansas City s initial Sports Illustrated cover shot came during the club s Super Bowl IV season in 69 following a win at the N.Y. Jets (11/16/69). While the Jets were defending Super Bowl III champions, New York could not overcome three TD passes from QB Len Dawson to WR Otis Taylor in that contest. The Chiefs later defeated QB Joe Namath and company in the 69 AFL Playoffs in a game that featured a storied goal-line stand by Kansas City s defense. Len Dawson Engineers Superchief Upset (January 19, 1970): After claiming their third American Football League title, the Chiefs made one final stand for the AFL with a 23-7 victory over the heavily-favored Vikings in Super Bowl IV. Minnesota s Purple People Eaters had lost just two games all season, but Chiefs head coach Hank Stram devised the perfect plan to matriculate the ball down the field. QB Len Dawson who was named the game s MVP led an offense which executed the famed 64 Toss Power Trap to perfection, while the Chiefs defense limited the Vikings to just one score as Kansas City claimed the Lombardi Trophy. Cool, Joe Montana Magic Strikes Again (January 24, 1994): QB Joe Montana made his third appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a member of the Chiefs following the club s upset win in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Houston (1/16/94). Fresh off of a OT victory in an AFC Wild Card Game vs. Pittsburgh (1/8/94), the Chiefs earned a berth in their firstever AFC Championship Game thanks to Montana, who rallied the Chiefs from an early 10-0 deficit against the Oilers. While the Chiefs offense posted 21 points in the fourth quarter, Kansas City s defense registered 7.0 sacks. CHIEFS TELEVISION NETWORK The Chiefs Television Network is set to broadcast all four Chiefs preseason games to 10 different markets in a five-state region that includes Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Anchored by KCTV5 in Kansas City, the Chiefs Television Network will broadcast the club s first three preseason games in HD, while Kansas City s final preseason contest will be telecast in a 16x9 format in SD. CBS Sports NFL play-by-play announcer Kevin Harlan will officially join the Chiefs Television Network to call a pair of preseason games for Kansas City in Harlan will be in the booth for the club s games at Minnesota (8/21) and vs. Seattle (8/29). FOX Sports NFL analyst Jayice Pearson returns to the Chiefs Television Network for a seventh season in A cornerback for the Chiefs from 86-92, Pearson will join Harlan in the broadcast booth for the first time this season. Former Chiefs T Rich Baldinger also returns to handle sideline reports. Veteran broadcaster Dave Armstrong will cover the play-by-play duties for two games on the Chiefs Television Network. Owning a litany of national and local broadcasting credits, Armstrong has previously broadcast Kansas City Royals and Seattle Seahawks games, in addition to Big 8, Big Ten and Big 12 basketball. Former Chiefs and longtime NFL offensive lineman Rich Baldinger will once again report from the sidelines. CHIEFS TV NETWORK MARKET STATION MARKET STATION Kansas City...KCTV Tulsa...KWBT Des Moines...KCWI Omaha... KMTV Springfield...KSFX Wichita/Hutchinson...KWCH Topeka... WIBW Columbia/Jefferson City.. KMIZ St. Joseph...KQTV Joplin/Pittsburg... KODE CHIEFS INSIDER: Chiefs Insider hosted by Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holthus is the official pregame TV show of the Chiefs. This weekly, in-depth report includes an exclusive interview with head coach Todd Haley and Chiefs players, as well as expert analysis from Holthus. The show airs locally at 9:30 AM on KCTV5 and at other times on stations throughout the Chiefs viewing area. Super Bowl XXXI It s Going to be Kansas City vs. Green Bay (September 2, 1996): The prognosticators at Sports Illustrated were half right when they picked the Chiefs to meet the Packers in Super Bowl XXXI in the publication s 96 preseason issue that featured a fold-out cover. One side featured Chiefs QB Steve Bono, DE Neil Smith and RB Marcus Allen, while the other side depicted Packers WR Robert Brooks, DE Reggie White and QB Brett Favre. Although the Chiefs were coming off a 13-3 campaign in 95, they couldn t replicate that success in 96, finishing the year with a 9-7 record. One of those victories was a win vs. Green Bay (11/10/96), but it would be the Packers who would go on to claim the Lombardi Trophy with a triumph in Super Bowl XXXI over New England. The Chiefs Perfect (So Far) (November 17, 2003): QB Trent Green became the fourth Chiefs signal caller to earn a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated thanks to Kansas City s 9-0 start to open the 2003 campaign. That nine-game winning streak featured a remarkable run by WR Dante Hall, who produced a kickoff return or punt return for a touchdown in four consecutive games. That victory stretch also was highlighted by Green s performance in a OT win at Green Bay (10/12/03). Green led the Chiefs back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter and found WR Eddie Kennison on a 51-yard TD pass in the extra period to provide the game-winning points. On the South side of Arrowhead at Gate E, tons of earth were moved to create room for the massive elevator shafts and reinforced concrete supports that will be one of the most noticable exterior additions to The Home of the Chiefs. By June of 2009, the rising elevator columns, as well as structural elements for the new press box and Horizon Level can be seen taking shape. While work will continue throughout the 2009 season, by 2010, Chiefs fans will be able to enjoy the fully-enclosed and climate-controlled concourse on the club level, as well as a host of other amenities and new spaces throughout the stadium. 492 NFL 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Media Guide
