Demons basketball club prides itself on promoting a fun, positive and fair environment for all its junior members. Demons Basketball Club asks all our coaches to concentrate on developing core skills based around basketball fundamental principles. Winning is not our primary focus but we believe it will come if we embrace this philosophy. Success is not always measured by premierships. More so the smiles on kids faces when they make their first goal or do something new for the first time. This coach s guide is designed to give coaches an idea of what players are expected to learn as they progress along their basketball journey. It s not our aim to tell coaches how to coach or what drills to run, more so set goals for you to reach thru out the season. Some of the more advanced skills or terminology used may be foreign to new coaches. Please ask a club representative or our other coaches if you are ever unsure.. We also encourage coaches to use the internet (Google, You tube, etc) to help explain skills or drills. There are 1000 s of drills to teach these skills, there are no right or wrong drill as long as the goal is reached. Coaching juniors is a fun rewarding experience for both the Coach and Players, enjoy!! Children respond positively to encouragement and a healthy relationship with their coach. Children enjoy variety. Children enjoy being with their friends. Children learn at different rates and have different needs. Children can conceptualise movement. Children need time to learn new skills. Children acquire skills at different rates. Children can learn from each other. Children learn specifically what you teach them.

Basketball Australia and thus Demons expect its coaches accept and adhere to the following behaviours at all times: Coaches are not to make overly verbal or animated objections to a referee s decision. Coaches are not to attempt to intimidate an opponent, or an official, by their words or actions. Coaches are to refrain from asking questions or making comments to a referee whilst play is in progress or during short stoppages in play. This includes but is not limited to: o A throw in resulting from a violation, foul or other occurrence, o During the administration ofree throws, or o During a stoppage in play for substitutions. Coaches are to direct questions to referees only during time-outs, quarter and half time breaks. Coaches are to limit their questioning of Referee s to either Rules or Bylaw interpretations. If a coach is not satisfied with a ruling he/she may seek clarification with the Court Supervisor for that stadium but he/she may not stay and argue the point with the referee s. Coaches are not to make statements of an abusive nature towards a referee the nature of which includes but is not limited to, o Performance or competence of referee or partner, o Racial Discrimination, o Gender or Sexuality based remarks, or o Perceived bias of a referee towards an opposing team. Coaches are not to use audible obscenities, which can be heard by other players, spectators or officials. Coaches are to treat all players, spectators, officials and other coaches with the same respect, professionalism and courtesy that you expect. Coaches are requested to assist a referee s request to address the conduct of his/her players and spectators.

Travel - To run or move without bouncing (dribbling) the ball or to move the pivot foot without bouncing the ball Double Dribble - 1) Once a dribble has been completed a player may not start to dribble again. 2) To bounce the ball (dribble) with both hands or in a manner that has both hands touching the ball. Out Of Bounds - Simply, when the ball goes out of the court. The team last to touch the ball will lose possession Foul - A foul is called on a player after illegal contact with an opposing player. A player fouled in the act of shooting will be awarded two free throws (or one free throw if the shot is made) 3 Second Rule - A player may only be in the offensive end key area for 3 seconds at a time. (This rule is often modified or relaxed for beginners) Jump Ball - A jump ball starts the game. Alternating Possession will occur when two players from opposing teams grasp and tug at the ball for possession and both hold on. Possession from the sideline is awarded alternately to each team. Team Fouls - A team may be given 4 team fouls in each quarter. Each foul after 4 the opposing team will be given two free throws. (Except if it is a offence foul) Personal Fouls - Each player is allowed 5 personal fouls in each game. After any player reaches their 5th personal foul, that player can not take any further part in that game. UMPIRE SIGNALS %

! There are THREE main steps to developing a basketball player: 1. Understanding the basic concepts and principles of offence and defence. 2. Teaching good decision making - with the ball knowing when and where to move it, without the ball knowing when and where to move oneself. Decision making is a product of good vision. Teaching vision and spatial awareness - being aware of the ball and all other players on the court and the spaces around them. 3. Learning the skills of the game footwork, movement and ball skills. "# Defence has deliberately been written in to this document before offence.- because its very important. It s a fact that if your opponent never scores you will never lose. Coaches typically focus on offensive skills. Kids love to dribble and shoot they will do this all day in their own time but kids never practice defence at home in the back yard. It s your job as coach to make your players passionate about defence It is generally recognised that if a child is taught the fundamentals of Man to Man defence at an early age when they get older they with have the core skill set to play any style of defence at a latter date. Demons endorses this philosophy and asks all its coaches to teach man to man defence particularly from U9 s up. Court awareness, voice, defensive close out, denial off the ball, split line help and boxing out are all terms players should be familiar with by the age of "# Many sports have the same basic concept of offence - take the ball to the open spaces, away from the defence, to score more easily. These sports include all field and court sports as well as net sports (tennis, badminton, and volleyball). It seems logical to teach the concept first and yet many basketball coaches don t recognise the need to teach this concept at the beginning. Have you ever seen two teams of 9 or 10 years old children learning to play soccer? The field is big; the ball is small and where are all the players? Gathered around the ball, like ants around a pot of honey. Why? Because every player wants to get the ball, but no one can, except through some lucky break. While all of the offensive players are all gathered around the ball so are the defensive players and so good passing becomes impossible and scoring is out of the question. Now cast your mind to Championship Division soccer. Here the players in offence are spread out over almost the entire field and the ball is passed into spaces, away from the defence and scoring becomes imminent. (

The same examples can be made in basketball, and unfortunately for many players who are not taught the concept of offence they continue to gravitate toward the ball even as senior players and this is why the passing and shooting skills look so poor at lower standards of the game. In fact the technique of the skills of passing and shooting may be very good, but a lack of understanding of the concept of offence causes the skills to look poor. Moving the ball to players in open space makes a team look good at passing and shooting, even if their technique is not too good. Take the ball to the open spaces, away from the defence, to be able to score more easily! By taking the ball to an open space, away from the defence, whether passing, dribbling, shooting or protecting the ball, the defence is forced to adjust, failure to adjust quickly will present opportunities to the offence for scoring. Obviously this means that all players without the ball must be continually moving into open spaces, away from the defence. This creates two problems for the defence, regardless of which style of defence they may play (man-to-man or zone). Firstly, the defensive players away from the ball must be continually adjusting (re-active defence) or they will allow offensive players to move into scoring positions. Secondly the defence is not in a position to create much pressure on the ball and if it tries to do so (pro-active defence) then the offence can move the ball to a player in a scoring position.!!! It is the aim of the Demons Basketball club to have a consistent approach to the teaching of the fundamentals of basketball throughout its junior program. *

Demons encourage all teams to train. In winter due to the intrusion of more dominant sports like football and netball that can be a struggle. Those teams that do make an effort to train will see the rewards. Every training should contain discipline and effort by both the coach and players it should also be enjoyable and competitive. You play how you Train - Coaches should maintain enthusiasm and interest in all aspects of coaching even though a players may at time seem disinterested, lack competitiveness or the required skills at that time. Training sessions should be organised & planned. Thought should be given to long and short term objectives. Even go as far to loosely plan the whole season to ensure all required aspects are covered. A Suggested coaches running sheet: Warm up exercise (compulsory) either baseline to baseline or baseline to ½ way line. Jog in line down court, then high knees, high heel, defence slide, & grapevine. (5 10 mins) include stretching for some age groups. Fundamentals could include dribbling, ball handling skills, passing, receiving, rebounding, boxing out & pivoting. Shooting lay ups, jump shots & foul shooting Fast break drills Defence or Offence Drill- rotate from week to week Offence take the ball to the open space Practical application where skills can be transferred into game like situations. Some fun time Slot some quick drills /games that you know the group enjoy between your boring fundamental drills. Always finish on something positive. 1

$% $ The following sections include a by age group overview followed by breakdowns of skills that each player should have when they complete that age group. 4 different levels of these skills can be observed Understand Is aware of the skill to be explained, but may still struggle with its use and or purpose in a game. Capable Can perform the skill and tries to use in game situation Proficient - Skill to be familiar to player, practised extensively and used in a game situation Mastered Confidently understands and implement the skill at will. Tip: Make copies of these skill charts for each individual player and mark off once taught or used. -.

& It s really important to ensure basic techniques are taught properly at this early age. It s near impossible to change a bad sooting technique when a child is older than 10 or 11. Emphasis must be on teaching playing rules, court markings, common terminology and having fun in a team environment. Please discourage grandparents paying kids for goals as it discourages team play. U7 s is purely about fun, participation and every one having equal court time. There are no Premierships points in U9 s.coaching should still give all players equal and fair court time. Continue to concentrate on basic techniques. For example, Its near impossible to change a bad shooting technique when a child is older than 10 or 11. Emphasis should still be on teaching playing rules, court markings, common terminology and having fun in a team environment. Again discourage grandparents paying kids for goals as it discourages team play. A more structured Man to man defence and learning how to do layups are the biggest difference between U7 s and U9 s.
