TULSA GOLDEN Hurricane fooball Tulsa s Fooball 1895: The Legacy Begins The legacy of Tulsa fooball began when he Bacone School for Indians and Henry Kendall College, which laer became The Universiy of Tulsa, did bale in I was one of he firs fooball games in he Indian Terriory and he game caused a lo of exciemen wihin he suden bodies of each school as well as he ciizens of he Terriory. People in he Oklahoma Terriory were excied by he prospecs of having fooball in he area, bu no one really undersood how he game was played. The Kendall eam didn even acually have a coach in ha firs season. A young ransfer suden from Springfield, Missouri, named Norman Leard sepped up o he ask. Alhough here was no score recorded, Kendall College won he only game he eam played ha year. Fooball sruggled o gain is prominence a he college. The college played only 19 games beween 1900 and No eams were fielded in 1903, 1904, 1906,1907 or Kendall College s reappearance on he collegiae fooball scene in 1912 came a a ime when he game iself was becoming modernized. New rules alered he game. Offenses were allowed four downs o make 10 yards. The lengh of he playing field was reduced from 110 o 100 yards, and mos imporanly, he 20-yard limi on forward passes was removed. By 1914, he resurrecion of Kendall College fooball was in full swing and wo men helped spur ha along. Sam McBirney, a Tulsa banker, and Francis Schmid came on he scene. In 1914, McBirney led he eam o a 7-2 record wih five shuou vicories, and followed ha season wih a record in I wasn jus McBirney who jump-sared he fooball program. Ivan Grove, who was one player insrumenal in building he he Kendall fooball program, was he key o undefeaed seasons of 1916 and He quarerbacked he Presbyerians from 1914 hrough 1916, and again in 1919 During he 1916 season, Grove and receivers Virgil Jones and Madison Puny Blevins developed he conroversial ower play. The play called for Jones and Blevins o sprin down field, Blevins would sop, lif Jones ono his shoulders, and Grove would oss he ball o Jones. A ha ime, here were no rules agains such a play Bu i only worked once for he Kendallies in a hrashing of Missouri School of Mines. Tha was he ype of dominaion The firs season ha fooball Kendall experienced in The season wore numerals on ended wih Kendall producing an undefeaed 10-0 record, and laying claim o heir jerseys was in he unofficial ile of sae champions. While he eam urned in heir uniforms ha season, a few Tulsa businessmen waned one more game for he Kendall eam, agains he fabulous Irish of Nore Dame. How close Kendall came o playing Nore Dame in he finale of he 1916 season probably will never be known, bu a definie move was underway wih some of he own s wealhies oilmen reporedly backing he promoion. Prior o he 1917 season, McBirney wen back o his bank, and Schmid, an assisan coach under McBirney, wen o figh in World War I, as did a number of. As a resul, he 1917 season was a rough one for Kendall College. Hal Medford ook he coaching reins, bu enrollmen dropped drasically as did he male populaion. Wih only wo varsiy available, Medford ook he iniiaive o recrui from Kendall Academy o fill he roser. The eam had many weak areas and Medford had a hard ime finding o srenghen hose areas. The eam wen wihou a win, hus i was called he season ha fell vicim o he Kaiser s war. By 1919, he Presbyerians were back in full force and primed for a comeback. Schmid HENRY KENDALL COLLEGE 1916 FOOTBALL TEAM IT WAS NOV. 13, 1915 WHEN TULSA USED THE TOWER PLAY AGAINST MISSOURI SCHOOL OF THE MINES. 3 2005 came back from he war ready o coach, and McBirney joined him as an assisan coach his ime. All he from previous years were back now, including Grove, and opimism was high. The eam played nine games, bu only hree were seen as serious hreas Oklahoma, Oklahoma A&M and Arkansas. The powerful Kendall eam wih Grove, John Young, Benon Springer, Harry Miller and Vergil Jones back in 1919, pummeled is firs opponen, Oklahoma Bapis. Kendall scored 22 ouchdowns and 20 conversions o amass a vicory. Tulsa wen on o defeaed wo of is main rivals, including 27-0 agains Oklahoma and a 63-7 vicory over Arkansas. Tulsa and Oklahoma A&M ied 7-7. By he urn of he cenury, Henry Kendall College was on he map as a eam o reckon wih on he fooball field. The Glorious Twenies Schmid ook Henry Kendall College ino he new decade wih anoher undefeaed season in 1920, he hird such season in he brief of he school. Kendall ouswcored is in 1920, 621 o 21 poins. As he decade progressed, changes ranging from coaching o he name of he universiy iself alered he face of Kendall fooball. The firs hing o change was he acual name of he universiy. On February 8, 1921, The Universiy of Tulsa was born. The adminisraion of Kendall College believed ha by aking on he name of he ciy, more suppor from is ciizens would follow. This change was me wih ime increases in donaions, hus proving is effeciveness. Schmid, who led he 1921 eam o a 6-3 record, was preparing for he 1922 season when he was named he head coach a he Universiy of Arkansas. Ener he name Howard Acher. When he ook over he posiion, Acher saw grea poenial in his eam and waned o publicize i by creaing a new ideniy wih a new nickname. Spors wriers and ohers had called he school by any number of names from he Presbyerians o he Orange and Black, o he Kendallies. Afer an opening day win agains a srong Texas Chrisian Universiy eam in 1922, Acher pu his mind o work. The press had claimed ha he Kendall fooball eam blew hrough is like a ornado. So, i figured ha Tornadoes, would be he nickname wih golden added o idenify he color of he uniforms. However, i was laer found ha Georgia Tech had claimed ha name, so from ornado i was evolved meeorologically o a hurricane. Thus he squad voed, and he name Golden Hurricane became he new eam monker wih he gold added because of he jersey color. TU lived up o is nickname as he Golden Hurricane blew hrough he Texas A&M defense in he nex game wih pass afer pass from quarerback Rex Thomas. TU won is firs game as he Golden Hurricane by a score of A perfec 9-0 record in was followed wih wo sraigh losing seasons, and afer he 1924 season Acher resigned his posiion as head coach. His replacemen was quie a shock o everyone as Elmer Gloomy Gus Henderson was chosen o ake over he coaching reins. The selecion of Henderson wasn as much of a surprise as was his accepance of he offer. He was coming from a program a he Universiy of Souhern California where, one All American was in he game, and his subsiue on he bench was an All American. No one could undersand why he would leave such a program. Bu he reason COACH FRNKA PICTURED WITH GLENN DOBBS, Only 12 fooball was simple, his lucraive conrac a Tulsa. Known as Gloomy Gus because of made he rip o Sillwaer his pessimism when speaking for publicaion, he found success easy a Tulsa. He on Oc. 22, 1927, and Tulsa augh his eam five new formaions, and came away vicorious pu he eam back on is fee afer only hree wins over he previous wo seasons. His firs few seasons resuled in 13 wins and four losses, and by 1927, Golden Hurricane fooball was well on is way o recovery. In 1928, prosperiy in America and he success of Tulsa fooball, inspired Henderson o dream of a new sadium. He ook his dream o he rich oilmen of Tulsa, and hey suppored i. A shor ime laer, Henderson saw his dream come rue. The Universiy of Tulsa fooball eam had a new home o go along wih he new philosophy and nickname. Tulsa Fooball Ges a New Home The 1930 season saw Coach Henderson s dream of a new home for Tulsa fooball became a realiy. Though he Depression had hi hard, he need for a new sadium was growing by he day. McNuly Park, he original home of he Golden Hurricane, had become archaic by modern collegiae sandards. In acualiy, i was a baseball field ha only measured 90 yards. This mean eams had o cross he goal line once, place he ball back on he 10 yard line, and cross he goal line again in order o score. By 1930, he new sadium had been approved and funding for he $300,000 projec had been acquired, so here could be no sopping. The sadium was buil o hold 15,000 specaors, and he norh and souh ends were lef open for fuure growh. Capaciy now sands a 40,235. The sadium was named afer William G. Skelly, a local oilman, who donaed $125,000 o he projec. The balance was raised by Tulsa businessmen by organizing he Sadium Corporaion of Tulsa. The sadium was dedicaed a he 1930 season opener agains Arkansas. The Golden Hurricane chrisened heir new home wih a 26-6 vicory TULSA FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 131

TULSA GOLDEN Hurricane fooball THE FIRST GAME IN SKELLY STADIUM WAS PLAYED ON OCT. 4, 1930, AS TULSA DEFEATED ARKANSAS One of he mainsays for he Golden Hurricane during his ransiion was Che Benefiel who played for TU from 1928 o The halfback s explois on he fooball field was said o have spurred he suppor for TU fooball ha resuled in he building of Skelly Sadium. Benefiel earned honorable menion All-America honors in 1930, and capained wo eams. He was Oklahoma Back of he Year in 1929, and was seleced o he All-Oklahoma eam in 1929 and As he Hurricane adaped o is new surroundings, he eam s prosperiy grew. Henderson s 1933 eam was he highligh of he decade. The Golden Hurricane played seven games ha season, posing vicories over rivals Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas. The Hurricane also soundly bea Oklahoma Cenral, Washburn and George Washingon. The lone seback TU suffered was a he hands of Texas A&M. Wins over such srong compeiion caused he eam of 1933 o be called one of he bes in Tulsa foobal. When Henderson decided o leave his coaching pos in 1935, TU wen in search of a successor. Wha hey found was ye anoher Rose Bowl champion coach from Souhern Mehodis Universiy named Vic Hur. A firs, Hur didn accep he posiion, bu wih some persuasive recruiing alk and a visi o campus, he acceped. Hur s enure lased hree seasons and afer he 1938 season, he sepped down o ake he head coaching pos a Kansas. Former TU player Che Benefiel moved up from his freshman coaching posiion o be Hur s successor, In 1940, Benefiel led he Hurricane o share he Missouri Valley Conference Championship in However, his conrac was no renewed for he nex season. As a resul, Tulsa hired Henry Frnka who would lead he Hurricane hrough one of he mos successful decades in Tulsa fooball. Tulsa Goes o Five Sraigh New Years Day Bowl Games The Firs School o Accomplish ha Fea The 1940s saw grea developmen in he srengh and nooriey of he Universiy of Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Players like Glenn Dobbs, Sax Judd, Bobby Jack Suar and N.A. Keihley, combined wih he coaching of Frnka mean five sraigh bowl berhs. Tulsa became he firs school o go o five sraigh New years Day Bowl Games, saring wih he Sun Bowl on January 1, Two Sugar Bowls, he Orange Bowl and Oil Bowl followed. Frnka brough a ferven love of he game and a srong desire o learn as much as he could abou he game o Tulsa. He buil a naional fooball powerhouse en roue o a career record of in his five years. The bowl appearances began in 1941 as he Hurricane posed a 7-2 regular season record. By early December, here had been no alk of a bowl bid for he Hurricane. A 13-6 loss o Arkansas seemed o have dashed any bowl dreams he eam may have had. However, on December 4, word came ha TU had in fac been invied o he Sun Bowl o play Texas Tech in El Paso, Texas on January 1, Tech was favored in he game, bu ha fac did no inimidae he Hurricane. As he waning minues of he game approached and he game sill scoreless, Dobbs conneced wih Judd who fell over he goal In 1941, he eam colors changed o blue, gold and crimson, line for he games only poins. 5 2005 Tulsa s bowl dynasy gained srengh in A he end of he regular season, he Hurricane had he only perfec record in college fooball going a I had been rumored ha he Hurricane was in line for he Rose Bowl, bu when he inviaion came, i was from New Orleans and he Sugar Bowl. Tulsa s opponen would be Tennessee. Tulsa sruck firs in ha January 1, 1943 game. On TU s second possession, Dobbs wen o work picking apar he Vols defense o pu he Hurricane on op 6-0. As he game wen on, TU saw is lead dissipae. The Voluneers pulled o wihin one poin jus before halfime. A safey and anoher Tennessee ouchdown in he second half gave he Vol s a 14-7 vicory, and ending Tulsa s hope of going 11-0 on he season and Tulsa began he 1942 being able o claim he naion s number one season wih shuous ranking. Tulsa ended he season 10-1 and ranked fourh in he naion. in is firs six games, The 1943 season saw Tulsa receive a second sraigh inviaion o he Sugar Bowl. This ouscoring ime he opponen would be Georgia Tech Afer he Tulsa offense failed o gain a firs down, Clyde LeForce faked a field goal and hrew he ball o Ed Shedlosky for a 6-0 Tulsa lead on he firs Hurricane possession. A he sar of he second quarer, TU sruck again on a Jimmy Ford 76-yard ouchdown run puing TU in command Then, he Yellow Jackes go on he scoreboard making i a 12-7 game. By halfime, he score sood a As he second half began, he Yellow Jackes began a comeback ha broke he backs of he Hurricane. Tech quickly scored a ouchdown o bring he score o A 78-yard drive hammered he final nail in he Hurricane s coffin as he game ended in a hearbreaking defea. As he nex season ook shape, TU was looking good for a fourh sraigh bowl game. Tulsa s wish came rue when he Hurricane received word ha hey d have a chance o avenge he previous year s bowl loss o Georgia Tech. This ime Tulsa would face Tech in he Orange Bowl on January 1, Tulsa scored wo firs quarer ouchdowns and added a hird TD in he hird quarer before Tech was able o ge on he scoreboard. Tech had a hird period score and each eam scored once more in he final quarer, as Tulsa held on for a win. Coming off ha bowl vicory, TU was hungry for anoher, and ha hunger grew as he 1945 season began. Hopes of anoher big bowl appearance were srong, bu sebacks near he end of he season deflaed hose hopes somewha. However, Tulsa impressed he Oil Bowl selecion commiee enough wih a win over Hondo Air Base in he regular season finale o earn a bowl bid. Thus, he Golden Hurricane found iself in is fifh sraigh bowl game playing Georgia. The Oil Bowl game was close hroughou, as each eam capialized on urnovers and he score sayed 7-6 unil he fourh quarer, when he Bulldogs scored 13 of heir 20 poins in ha quarer. Tulsa came ou on he shor end of a 20-6 bale. Alhough ha loss ended Tulsa s bowl appearances for a ime, he accomplishmen of having gone o five sraigh bowl games pu The Universiy of Tulsa on he college fooball map. The Frnka era also ended wih he Oil Bowl game. Bu, his conribuions o Tulsa kep alive a radiion of qualiy fooball ha ranks wih some of he bes in he counry ha carried ino he 1950s. 6 TULSA GOLDEN Hurricane fooball The Bowl Legacy Coninues J.O. Buddy Brohers moved ino he head coaching posiion in 1946 and ook he Hurricane program ino he 1950s, bu no before posing a 9-1 record in Tulsa hi a low poin in 1948 wih an record, bu wo years laer Tulsa bounced back wih a mark in The highligh of he 1950s was Tulsa s visi o he Gaor Bowl following he 1952 season where hey me a srong Florida eam. Tha season, he Hurricane posed an record as TU renewed heir bowl radiion. Several played key roles in he success of ha 1952 eam. Of course, i all sared wih inspiraion from Coach Brohers, who was born wih no lef hand. He inspired his wih his courage and deerminaion no o allow his handicap o ge in he way. Tom Ham, a player for Brohers on ha 1952 eam, once said coach Brohers showed his oughness every day a pracice. His oughness spurred he Hurricane o success in Coach Brohers was voed Missouri Valley Coach of he Year in 1949 and His Hurricane eams had a career record of , winning wo Missouri Valley Conference championships. Tulsa was also blessed wih excepional alen in Tommy Hudspeh, Marvin Mauszak and Howard Waugh were ri-capains. Hudseph was a srong defensive back for he Hurricane and was seleced o he All-Oklahoma decade fooball eam of he 1950s. Mauszak, hailed as one of he bes linemen in Tulsa, was he firs Hurricane player o wice be named firs eam All-America. Waugh was a record-seing running back. He led he naion in rushing wih 1,372 yards and averaging 6.8 yards per rush. LINEMAN MARVIN MATUSZAK (1951) WAS TULSA S FIRST TWO-TIME ALL-AMERICAN These hree men led a srong Hurricane eam ino he Florida game. From he ime he Hurricane ook he field agains Florida in he Gaor Bowl, hey knew hey were in for a bale. Florida scored he firs ime hey had he ball, and again on a 37-yard pass play in he second quarer. When TU ook he field for he second half, he Hurricane consruced a drive of 73 yards for heir firs score pulling he Hurricane wihin a ouchdown a Tulsa s second scoring drive covered 46 yards, capped by Waugh leaping ino he end zone afer he Hurricane recovered a fumble a he Gaors 46-yard line. However, Tom Miner s PAT wen wide lef leaving Florida wih a onepoin lead, TU had one final scoring opporuniy afer anoher Florida fumble wih six minues remaining in he game. The Hurricane ravelled o he Gaors' 4-yard line, bu had o sele for a field goal aemp ha missed, allowing Florida o hold on for a vicory. Alhough Tulsa los ha bowl game, he 1952 eam and hose previous o i had some of he bes in Tulsa. Tulsa upses highly favored Villanova, 21-19, in Philadelphia on Oc. 14, Villanova was considered he bes eam in he Eas GATOR BOWL FOOTBALL TEAM 134

2005 Passing was he Name of he Game in 1960 s As he 1960s ook shape, Glenn Dobbs became he head fooball coach a his alma maer in Dobbs revialized Tulsa s passing aack making he Hurricane offense a hrea whenever i ook he field. Tulsa led he naion in passing for five sraigh seasons 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 and Alhough he 1963 season produced only a 5-5 record, Tulsa s offense, spearheaded by quarerback Jerry Rhome, averaged yards passing per cones. Unil 1964, college fooball was dominaed by running aacks. The naion saw Howard Twilley had 16 recepions for 267 yards in Tulsa s vauned offensive aack in 1964 as he bes passing eam he naion had a vicory over ever seen. Memphis Sae on Oc. 9, For 30 years eams avoided passing 1965, he firs game in he he ball because hey hough running he ball was a beer way o play he expanded Skelly Sadium. game. Wha ook years for college fooball o develop, Rhome and company oblieraed in wo years. In 1964, he Rhome-Twilley connecion broke 20 NCAA for oal offense, passing, receiving and scoring. The nooriey hose impressive saisical numbers gave he wo Hurricane sandous helped lead hem o back o back Heisman Trophy runner-up finishes ññ Rhome in 1964 and Twilley in Dobbs obviously didn believe in he ground aack philosophy. He was one of he Hurricane s mos prolific passers himself, so i s no wonder he brough his aerial philosophy back o Tulsa. Under Dobbs guidance, he Hurricane offense passed 52 percen of he ime, well above he 29 percen Tulsa s were averaging. Behind ha srong offense, he 1964 eam won all bu wo regular season games leaving he Hurricane wih an 8-2 record and an inviaion o he Bluebonne Bowl in Houson, Texas o face Mississippi. In ha game, Tulsa dominaed wih is passing game as he Hurricane came from behind o re-esablish hemselves as a srong bowl eam by winning 14-7, and finishing he season wih a 9-2 mark. The 1965 season saw a quarerback named Billy Guy Anderson rise up o lead he Hurricane. I wasn long before Anderson sared breaking he Rhome had se he year before. Anderson was he naion s leading passer as he ook Tulsa o ye anoher Bluebonne Bowl. BILLY GUY ANDERSON PASSES FOR A SCHOOL RECORD 502 YARDS IN A WIN OVER COLORADO STATE ON NOV. 25, Tulsa s receiving andem of Rick Eber and Harry Wood combined for 640 yards and six TDs on 33 recepions in a 58-0 win over Idaho Sae on Oc. 7, Eber had 20 caches for 322 yards, while Wood had 13 caches for 318 yards. SKELLY STADIUM WAS EXPANDED TO 40,235 SEATS IN Twilley was more of a hrea han ever as he pu his eam and NCAA of he previous year o shame. He caugh 134 passes for 1,779 yards and 16 ouchdowns in 1965, and came up jus shor in he Heisman Trophy balloing, as did Rhome he year before, finishing second o USC s Mike Garre. The Golden Hurricane wen ino he Bluebonne Bowl agains Tennessee wih an 8-2 record hoping o repea he success of is previous Bluebonne Bowl appearance. However, hings were rough for he Hurricane his ime, as Tulsa could cross he Voluneers 20-yard line only wice. Tennessee jumped ou o a 14-0 lead as hey capialized on wo Tulsa fumbles. They also reurned a pun for a hird score, and urned an inercepion ino heir fourh score. The voluneers pu he game ou of reach on heir las ouchdown in he hird quarer. Tennessee won he game In he 1960s, Tulsa ook he collegiae passing game o a level never seen before. The Hurricane averaged nearly 318 yards in 1964, and increased ha average o 346 yards a year laer. Under he uelage of Dobbs, i was Rhome, Anderson and Twilley who helped revoluionize he way college fooball was played. NFL Talen Flourishes The 1970s coninued he wealh of alen going hrough he Hurricane program and enering he professional ranks. Some of he Tulsa urned ou ha decade wen ino he NFL and became legends of he game. Names like Seve Largen and Drew Pearson wen on o successful careers in he NFL. When F.A. Dry ook over as head coach a mid-season 1972, replacing Claude Gibson afer six games, he was faced wih he ime challenge of creaing an undersanding of his philosophy. Tha 2005 TULSA FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 135

TULSA GOLDEN Hurricane fooball philosophy. He believed ha srong organizaion was key he o a successful eam. From he momen Dry ook he helm, hings began o improve for he Hurricane. His firs game came he nigh afer he acceped he head coaching posiion. Before ha game, TU had gone 1-5, bu upse Louisville and won is final wo games o pos a 3-2 record under Dry, and 4-7 on he year. I would be he only year during Dry s four-and-ahalf year enure, ha he Hurricane would suffer a losing season. A year laer, Dry led Tulsa o a 6-5 record and firs place in he Missouri Valley Conference. The 1976 season was he highligh of he Dry Era as he coached he eam o a 7-4 record, a Missouri Valley Conference championship, and a berh in he firs Independence Bowl where he Hurricane faced McNeese Sae Universiy. Things looked promising for he Hurricane a firs as hey consruced a 65-yard drive capped by a Thomas Bailey one-yard jaun ino he end zone for he firs TU score, bu a halfime, Tulsa clung o a sligh 7-6 lead. As he second half sared, McNeese Sae produced a 65-yard scoring drive of heir own, opped wih a wo-poin conversion giving hem he lead The Hurricane scored on a blocked field goal aemp, bu he PAT was no good, so he Hurricane sayed a poin shy of he lead a Afer Tulsa made a fourh quarer 38-yard field goal o go ahead 16-14, TU seemed o have he game in he palm of heir hands, bu McNeese Sae answered by puing ogeher an 80-yard scoring drive during he final wo minues ha pu he Hurricane down o defea Dry made grea srides in revializing Hurricane fooball. During his enure, he posed a record, and coached many sandou. Tweny-seven of hem wen ino he pro ranks mos of which were drafed. One player who wasn drafed, urned ou o be one of he bes NFL receivers of all-ime. Drew Pearson signed a free agen conrac in 1972 wih he Dallas Cowboys where he esablished himself as one of he bes receivers in Naional Fooball League. Afer wo years as Tulsa s quarerback, he wen o he receiving end of he ball and led TU o he Missouri Valley Conference championship in As a receiver for he Hurricane, Pearson caugh 55 passes for 1,119 yards placing him enh in receiving in TU. His senior season, Pearson averaged 20.9 yards per cach scoring five ouchdowns. Pearson was signed wih he Dallas Cowboys as a free agen in 1972 Seve Largen, who would become an NFL Hall of Fame inducee, was favorably compared o Howard Twilley while a Tulsa. In 1974 and again in 1975, Largen led he naion in ouchdown recepionsn wih 14 ouchdowns each year. He was a wo-ime selecion for he all-mvc eam and was named o he Associaed Press second eam All-American squad in Largen averaged 17.5 yards per cach for his career, KEN LACY, ONE HALF OF THE PALOMINO EXPRESS and caugh 51 passes for 1,000 yards his senior season. In 1977, offensive lineman Seve Augus was a firs round draf selecion of he Seale Seahawks. These and ohers, along wih he man who coached hem made a mark on Tulsa fooball. Some made a mark on he NFL as well. The eams of he 1970s helped Tulsa build a repuaion for developing qualiy who can make a difference on a eam. No Jusice John Cooper ook over he Tulsa fooball program in 1977, and suffered hrough a 3-8 campaign, bu in 1978 he rebounded he roops for an impressive 9-2 record. Perhaps one of he bes fooball eams was assembled in The only blemish on he season was a loss o naionally-ranked Arkansas. However, Tulsa's 10-1 season and op-20 naional ranking was no good enough o impress Bowl scous. In ha same season, college fooball fans new abou a andem of running backs a SMU, nicknamed he Pony Express ññ Eric Dickerson and Craig James. Bu wha college fooball fans may no have known was ha Tulsa has he only oher pair of running backs in he counry o rush for over for over 1,000 yards each Micheal Guner and Ken Lacy. In a akeoff of he Pony Express, Tulsa's andem was dubbed he "Palomino Express". Tha season, Tulsa was no he only 10-1 eam snubbed from he Bowl picure, as New Mexico was in he same siuaion as he Hurricane. Tulsa and New Mexico fans cried ou for jusice, and Jusice is jus wha hey received. Tulsa and New Mexico would square off in he Jusice Bowl on December 19, A 1:15 p.m. ha afernoon, radio saions in he wo ciies carried he play-by-play of a ficiious machup beween he wo schools. In Tulsa, he Hurricane would win he game, and in New Mexico he Lobos riumphed. In 1983, quarerback Seve Gage scored a ouchdown on his firs collegiae run from scrimmage, and hrew a TD on his firs pass, boh coming in he season opener agains San Diego Sae. Bowl Games Close ou 1980s, Usher in he 90s Coach Cooper enjoyed a successful enure aking Tulsa fooball ino he 1980s, while a former Tulsa quarerback would ake Hurricane fooball ou of he ë80s and ino he 1990s. When Dave Rader became head coach in 1988, he became an expansion of Tulsa fooball s pas. Beween Cooper and Rader, Tulsa had wo coaches for a oal of hree seasons. Don Moron was he head coach in 1985 and 1986, while George Henshaw coached he Hurricane for he 1987 season. Under Rader, Tulsa fooball experienced a roller coaser ride. The highes poins were wo bowl games 1989 Independence Bowl and 136

2005 CHRIS PENN (#86) GRABS T.J. RUBLEY S HAIL MARY PASS LATE IN THE GAME TO SET UP A GAME-WINNING FIELD GOAL AGAINST SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI IN Freedom Bowl. In his college debu, quarerback T.J. In 1989, he Hurricane Rubley compleed 27 passes for 386 posed a 6-5 regular season mark, and represened he yards agains Oklahoma Sae on Independen Fooball Alliance Sep. 5, a he Independence Bowl, where he Hurricane faced a srong Oregon eam from he PAC-10. The Ducks had a second-place conference finish, and was a 16-poin favorie, bu TU obviously didn gamble. TU gave he Ducks all he figh hey could handle. Tulsa sruck firs on a one-yard TD run from Bre Adams, bu Oregon bounced back as hey pu ogeher scoring drives of 54 and 79 yards of heir own o ake he lead The Hurricane ook a lead ino halfime on a field goal and a blocked pun reurn for a ouchdown. Tulsa scored once more in he hird quarer o build heir lead o 24-10, bu Oregon came back scoring wo quick ouchdowns o kno he game a 24. As ime wound down in he fourh period, he officials ruled agains TU on a fumble recovery allowing he Ducks o coninue a drive ha ended wih a final field goal and a vicory.
