The Jets announced Wednesday that Richardson, who was originally selected as an alternate, will play in the game in Glendale, Arizona, on Jan. 25 a week before the Super Bowl is played there. Richardson joins center Nick Mangold as Jets players in the Pro Bowl this year. Richardson, the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, followed that up by leading the Jets with eight sacks and establishing himself as one of the league's top defensive linemen. McCoy was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Dec. 15 after spraining his right knee. Jets hire Cardinals' Todd Bowles as coach (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press January 14, NEW YORK (AP) The New York Jets hired Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles as their head coach Wednesday. The 51-year-old Bowles replaces Rex Ryan, who was fired, along with general manager John Idzik, on Dec. 29 after six seasons. Bowles was a highly sought candidate after leading Arizona's defense the last two seasons. It is a homecoming of sorts for Bowles, who is a native of Elizabeth, New Jersey. He also served as the Jets' defensive backs coach under then-coach Al Groh during the 2000 season. Bowles beat out five other candidates who interviewed for the job, including Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and former Buffalo coach Doug Marrone. 2 P a g e
The Jets hired former Houston director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan as their general manager Tuesday night. Bowles had a second interview Tuesday with Johnson, Casserly and Wolf along with Maccagnan and impressed the Jets enough to move forward. New York canceled a scheduled interview with Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott that was set for Wednesday. Bowles also called off a second meeting with the Atlanta Falcons for their head coaching vacancy that was scheduled for Wednesday. Bowles becomes the fifth black head coach currently in the NFL, joining Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin, Cincinnati's Marvin Lewis, Tampa Bay's Lovie Smith and Detroit's Jim Caldwell. He is also the fifth straight defensive-focused coach Johnson has hired since taking over the Jets in 2000, joining Ryan, Eric Mangini, Herm Edwards and Groh With the Jets, Bowles will inherit a solid defensive front seven which was always Ryan's primary focus with rising star defensive linemen in Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson. The secondary, however, needs a major overhaul. Along with Maccagnan, who was hired Tuesday night, Bowles will try to help the Jets bounce back from four straight seasons out of the playoffs. The franchise is also starving for a Super Bowl appearance, something it hasn't had since Bowles brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience with him to New York. He played college football for current Cardinals coach Bruce Arians at Temple. He went undrafted in 1986, but was signed by Washington and worked his way to a major role with Joe Gibbs' Redskins including starting at free safety against Denver in the 1988 Super Bowl. Bowles had 15 career interceptions in eight NFL seasons, including two stints with Washington while Casserly was in the Redskins' front office, sandwiched around one season (1991) with San Francisco. Bowles was hired by Green Bay after his playing career ended, working in the Packers' player personnel department from when Wolf was the GM. He then made several stops as a coach at the college and pro levels, first as the defensive coordinator at Morehouse College and then Grambling State both under his former Washington teammate Doug Williams and as an assistant with the Jets, Cleveland and Dallas, under then-coach Bill Parcells, whom he considers a mentor. He was hired as the Dolphins' assistant head coach and secondary coach from He served as the team's interim head coach for the final three games of the 2011 season, going 2-1 with wins over Buffalo and the Jets after Tony Sparano was fired. Bowles went to Philadelphia in 2012 as the Eagles' secondary coach, but was elevated to defensive coordinator when the team dismissed Juan Castillo. After that season, Bowles was hired as Arizona's defensive coordinator and firmly established himself as one of the league's up-and-coming assistants. AP source: Chan Gailey to be Jets' offensive coordinator (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press January 15, NEW YORK (AP) Chan Gailey is returning to the NFL to run the New York Jets' offense. 3 P a g e
The former Dallas and Buffalo head coach will be the Jets' offensive coordinator under new coach Todd Bowles, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Gailey was out of football the last two seasons after being fired as the Bills' coach after the 2012 season. But Bowles, who was hired by the Jets on Wednesday, is making him a part of his staff in New York. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the hiring. The 63-year-old Gailey replaces Marty Mornhinweg as the Jets' offensive coordinator after New York struggled with consistency, particularly with quarterback Geno Smith, on offense. The Jets finished 22nd in overall offense this season, but were last in the NFL in passing. "He'll try to put Geno, if he is indeed the guy, in a position where he'll be playing with a lot of confidence," said former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who had Gailey on his staff for four seasons. "That's what I like about Chan, is his ability to be flexible and get the players to understand and, at the same time, believe in what they're doing. Along with Bowles and new general manager Mike Maccagnan, hired Tuesday, Gailey will try to upgrade the offense and determine whether the Jets will move forward with Smith or perhaps look elsewhere in free agency or the draft. "I have great respect for him," Cowher, now a studio analyst for CBS, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I think he's a very good playcaller. He knows how to get the very best out of what he has. He's not married to a certain system. I think the biggest thing with Chan is that he's got diversity." Gailey has had several coaching stops at the college and NFL levels, including serving as head coach at Troy State, Samford, Georgia Tech and in the World League. In addition to being Cowher's offensive coordinator for two of his four seasons in Pittsburgh, Gailey was in the same role under Dan Reeves in Denver, Dave Wannstedt in Miami and Herm Edwards in Kansas City. While his head coaching record of in Dallas and in Buffalo might not excite Jets fans, Gailey's work with offenses is still very much respected around the NFL. And, the two-year layoff is of no concern to Cowher. "Chan has been in the game long enough," Cowher said. "For a first-time head coach, there are things that will come up that you have never experienced before, and Chan has been there. He's selfless, he's loyal and I think he'll be a great resource to Todd, in particular on his side of the ball while he takes care of what he's going to do on his side of the ball." NEWSDAY Jets' Sheldon Richardson to replace Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy at Pro Bowl (Kimberley Martin) Newsday January 15, Sheldon Richardson is Pro Bowl-bound after all. The Jets' second-year defensive lineman will replace the Bucs' Gerald McCoy, who is unable to play in the game because of injury. 4 P a g e
"I'm elated," Richardson told the Jets' website. "It's an overwhelming feeling. It's the crème de la crème and I'm one of them. I'm glad I got in, not the way I wanted to, but I'm appreciative and most definitely thankful." Richardson led the team with eight sacks and recorded 84 total tackles, but he was named a second alternate for the Pro Bowl. "I want to say thanks to my defensive line, my defense, and most definitely my linebackers because they make me right. And thank you, Rex," Richardson said of former Jets coach Rex Ryan, who was introduced as the Bills' new coach Wednesday afternoon. "There's a lot of freedom in his defense for guys at my position to make plays, and I appreciate that for not putting shackles on me." Center Nick Mangold was the only Jet selected to the Pro Bowl, which will be played Jan. 25 in Glendale, Arizona. Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Chris Ivory were selected as alternates. Ryan said last month that he was shocked Richardson wasn't voted in. And, naturally, so was Richardson. "I might have to break the record for me to get some recognition," Richardson said on Dec. 26, three weeks after sacking Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater three times. "I might have to get eight, break Derrick Thomas' record." Richardson, the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year, also vowed that day never to miss another Pro Bowl again. "I told you, I'm one of the best defensive linemen in the game. That's how I feel," he said. "I'm only getting better, baby." Bill Parcells gives Todd Bowles his blessing (Bob Glauber) Newsday January 15, Todd Bowles has a daunting task before him as the Jets' new coach. He inherits a 4-12 team with myriad problems, including the lack of a franchise quarterback, a dearth of quality cornerbacks, an offensive line in transition and little depth at wide receiver. But the former Cardinals defensive coordinator, who agreed late Tuesday to become the successor to Rex Ryan, has someone in his corner who has more credibility in this town than almost any other coach who has come through here. The 51-year-old Bowles has the seal of approval from none other than Bill Parcells, who led the Giants to their first two Super Bowl championships and helped the Jets to an AFC Championship Game appearance in the second of his three seasons as coach. Parcells has long admired Bowles, who worked on Al Groh's staff in 2000, the year Parcells served as the Jets' general manager before leaving the organization. But Parcells' affection for Bowles goes back far longer than that. "I coached against him when he was running the secondary with the Redskins," Parcells said Wednesday from his home in Jupiter, Fla. "He was making all the [defensive] calls and that stuff, and you notice that as a coach, who's doing what. He's a highly intelligent guy." 5 P a g e
This was back when Parcells was coaching the Giants and Bowles was with Washington as a safety from Bowles made the team as a free agent walk-on out of Temple, a player who caught the eye of one Charley Casserly, who was then in the Washington scouting department. Bowles wound up as a starter for renowned defensive coordinator Richie Petitbon, who engaged in plenty of superb matchups against the Giants during those halcyon days of the NFC East. Parcells saw the heady play of Bowles, who had 13 interceptions with Washington from before going to the 49ers for a year and then returning to Washington for his final two NFL seasons as a player. "I think he did a good job for them," Parcells said. "It's something you do notice." Parcells continued to keep an eye on Bowles once he decided to go into coaching. Bowles paid his dues by working with an assortment of teams at every level. After a combined three seasons coaching the defensive backs at Morehouse and then Grambling State, Groh brought Bowles onto his Jets' staff to coach the secondary. He did solid work during a 9-7 season, and while Parcells was quick to point out that it was Groh who hired him, Bowles certainly had Parcells' blessing. Bowles moved on to the Browns from , but Parcells brought him onto his staff in Dallas when Tuna was the Cowboys' coach. And when Parcells moved on to take over the football operation at Miami, Bowles came with him, too, serving as the assistant head coach/secondary from and briefly serving as the interim head coach at the end of the 2011 season. After a year in Philadelphia as the secondary coach and a brief stint as interim defensive coordinator, Bowles made his mark with two quality years in Arizona, where the Cardinals made the playoffs both years under coach Bruce Arians. Bowles had taken over for the very popular Ray Horton, but soon won his players over with his unique brand of tough love -- sound familiar, Parcells? -- and deft handling of the team's varied personalities. Fast forward to the Jets' hiring process, and it was Casserly and fellow adviser Ron Wolf, the former Packers GM who had Bowles on his personnel staff in , who recommended Bowles to owner Woody Johnson. Johnson brought back Bowles for a second interview on Tuesday and shook hands with his new coach later that evening. Parcells couldn't be happier for Bowles. "I have a high regard for Todd Bowles," Parcells said. "I think he has a lot of experience, both coaching and playing. I think he's going to be OK." And what about the New York market, which has proved to be a challenge for even the most hardened coaches, Parcells included? "You guys all think it's different," Parcells said of the notion that the New York area is tougher than other places. "It's not different. There's much more of it. Everywhere else, it's the same." Bowles is about to find out what this town is all about, but the man who saw promise in him as a player and then a coach believes his apprenticeship will serve him well in his new role. Bowles has Tuna's blessing, which counts for something around here. Jets make hiring of Todd Bowles official (Kimberley Martin) Newsday January 15, P a g e
The Jets officially announced Todd Bowles as coach Wednesday. The expected news completed a flurry of activity in Florham Park that began with Tuesday's hiring of general manager Mike Maccagnan. "It's an honor and privilege to coach the Jets,'' Bowles, the Cardinals' former defensive coordinator, said in a statement released by the team. "I want to thank Mr. [Woody] Johnson and Mike Maccagnan for this opportunity. I can't help but be humbled by the chance to coach this team. "I am going to do everything I can to build a consistent winner.'' That's exactly what the Jets need after a 4-12 season, their fourth in a row without a playoff appearance. Bowles is expected to hire Chan Gailey as offensive coordinator and bring in Dolphins defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers as defensive coordinator. Gailey, 63, has not coached in the NFL since he was fired as Bills coach after the 2012 season, but his reputation for being a pass-happy coach who likes to stretch the field is well documented. Gailey was the offensive coordinator for the Broncos ( ), Steelers ( ), Dolphins ( ) and Chiefs (2008). Bowles' history with Rodgers, 45, dates to , when both were on the Cowboys' staff. They also worked together with the Dolphins from "I am proud to welcome Todd Bowles as the head coach of the New York Jets,'' Johnson said. "From entering the league as an undrafted free agent in Washington to becoming a very successful coordinator in Arizona, Todd has earned everything he has achieved. He is a hard-working and dedicated leader who has garnered the respect of players and coaches. "I am confident that Todd and Mike Maccagnan are the right combination to lead this team.'' Maccagnan is expected to make significant changes to the scouting department, and longtime Jets executive Terry Bradway and director of college scouting Jeff Bauer may not be retained. Bowles had been scheduled to fly to Atlanta yesterday morning for a second interview with the Falcons. But after interviewing Tuesday with the Jets for several hours -- and dining with Maccagnan, Johnson and advisers Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf -- Bowles decided the Jets were the right fit. Both sides reached an agreement late Tuesday, sources said. "Todd is a natural leader and excellent communicator with a great work ethic, who has demonstrated a consistent ability to win by utilizing all of his players,'' Maccagnan said. "... When we first met, it was immediately clear how sincere and very real he is. While he appreciates the need for discipline, players love playing for him and I believe he has outstanding qualities to help make the Jets a competitive, winning team.'' Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, who also coached Bowles at Temple during the 1980s, congratulated his friend. "I couldn't be more happy for Todd,'' Arians said. "The Jets got themselves a tremendous coach and an even better person. We're sorry as hell to lose him, but we all knew this day was coming, especially with the job he did here the last two years. "Todd and I go back more than 30 years. He was one of my captains at Temple and it was obvious then how special he was. "His passion for the game and intelligence are as high as anyone I've ever been around. Todd's been ready for this for a long time, and I'm ecstatic for him to finally get the opportunity.'' 7 P a g e
THE RECORD Jets: Look to Todd Bowles for more discipline (J.P. Pelzman) The Record January 15, 2015 Daily Clips Cont. There are similarities between Todd Bowles and Rex Ryan, the man he has replaced. Both are defensive-oriented and both used successful stints as a defensive coordinator to become viable head coaching candidates. And both are well-liked by their players, including veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who has given high praise to both men on Twitter in recent days. But there seems to be an important difference, and it's one the Jets apparently are counting on after they officially hired the 51-year-old Bowles as their new coach Wednesday. In a statement, new general manager Mike Maccagnan said: "Todd is a natural leader and excellent communicator with a great work ethic, who has demonstrated a consistent ability to win by utilizing all of his players. Todd's eight years in the NFL [as a player] after not being drafted speaks to his determination, adaptability and resilience and he has first-hand knowledge of how all players can contribute. When we first met, it was immediately clear how sincere and very real he is." Maccagnan, hired by the Jets on Tuesday, added, "While [Bowles] appreciates the need for discipline, players love playing for him and I believe he has outstanding qualities to help make the Jets a competitive, winning team." Discipline was a major problem for the Jets under the laissez-faire Ryan. Not so much in terms of off-field problems, but with the on-field product. Silly mental errors and careless penalties became the norm, and it was a common sight on game day to see a player commit an egregious mental mistake and then walk to the sideline, passing within earshot of Ryan, yet no words were exchanged. Bowles figures to be more likely to use such situations as teachable moments and perhaps instill a sense of accountability that often seemed to be lacking during Ryan's regime. Bowles, an Elizabeth native who was Arizona's defensive coordinator for the last two seasons, becomes the fifth African-American head coach currently in the NFL. The others are Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin, Cincinnati's Marvin Lewis, Tampa Bay's Lovie Smith and Detroit's Jim Caldwell. He also is the fifth consecutive defensive-minded coach hired by owner Woody Johnson, following Al Groh, Herm Edwards, Eric Mangini and Ryan. The last offensive-oriented Jets head coach was Rich Kotite in "It's an honor and privilege to coach the Jets," Bowles said in the statement. "I want to thank Mr. Johnson and Mike Maccagnan for this opportunity. I can't help but be humbled by the chance to coach this team. I am going to do everything I can to build a consistent winner." Bowles plans to bring in former Buffalo and Dallas head coach Chan Gailey as his offensive coordinator, a source confirmed. Bowles' first NFL coaching job was with the Jets as their secondary coach in 2000, a position for which he was hired by Bill Parcells. Parcells later brought Bowles to Dallas and Miami for stints as an assistant. He also has ties to both of the consultants employed by Johnson in the dual searches for a new GM and coach. He played for the Washington Redskins during Charley Casserly's tenure as GM there, and Bowles' first NFL job was in Green Bay's personnel department in when Ron Wolf was the general manager. 8 P a g e
Casserly said, "He does a good job of relating to players and they want to play for him." Wolf noted, "I was very impressed with Todd Bowles during his interview." NJ ADVANCED MEDIA Bill Parcells has 'a high regard' for new Jets head coach Todd Bowles (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advanced Media January 15, Bill Parcells began our phone conversation by apologizing. Parcells, the Hall of Fame former Giants and Jets head coach, is described in the 2014 Cardinals' media guide as "one of [Todd] Bowles' mentors." Bowles, officially hired Wednesday as the Jets' head coach, had worked under Parcells three different times as Bowles climbed the coaching ranks in the last 20 years. Bowles, an Elizabeth native, had spent the last two seasons as the Cardinals defensive coordinator before the Jets plucked him to take over for Rex Ryan. I had left Parcells a pair of phone messages on Wednesday. When he finally called me back in the evening, he politely explained that he had gotten 20 or so requests from other reporters looking for anecdotes and color about Bowles. (The actual number probably wasn't as high as 20, but he made his point.) So rather than take any questions that would lead him into spinning yarns and staying on the phone a while, he offered up a few quick comments about Bowles instead. Bowles had played safety for Washington from , then again from after spending the '91 season with the 49ers. He later worked for Parcells as a defensive backs coach with the Jets in 2000 (when Parcells was general manager), Cowboys ( , when Parcells was the head coach), and Dolphins ( , when Parcells was executive vice president of football operations). So there are lots of ties between the two men. Which is why, ever so briefly, Parcells just said a few words about how much he thinks of Bowles. "I have a high regard for Todd Bowles," Parcells said. "He has a lot of experience as a coach and as a player. And when I played against him I was coach of the Giants when he was a safety with the Redskins; he was running the Redskins' secondary, really, and making all the calls, and I noticed that. "I also worked with him in three different places the Jets, Cowboys, and Dolphins and I think he's a highly intelligent guy. I think he'll do well." Todd Bowles officially hired as Jets head coach (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advanced Media January 15, What the world already knows is now officially official: Elizabeth native Todd Bowles is the 18th head coach of the New York Jets. Well, 19th, if you want to include that Bill Belichick dude, but he never actually coached a game before resigning as HC of the NYJ, so maybe he shouldn't count. Anyway, the Jets just a few minutes ago tweeted out a photo of Bowles putting pen to paper on his contract, which a league source told NJ Advance Media late Tuesday night would be for four years: 9 P a g e
The Jets also released statements with reactions from various team officials, including Bowles: Owner Woody Johnson: "I am proud to welcome Todd Bowles as the head coach of the New York Jets," Johnson said. "From entering the league as an undrafted free agent in Washington to becoming a very successful coordinator in Arizona, Todd has earned everything he has achieved. He is a hard-working and dedicated leader who has garnered the respect of players and coaches. I am confident that Todd and Mike Maccagnan are the right combination to lead this team." General manager Mike Maccagnan, who was officially hired on Tuesday: "Todd is a natural leader and excellent communicator with a great work ethic, who has demonstrated a consistent ability to win by utilizing all of his players. Todd's eight years in the NFL after not being drafted speaks to his determination, adaptability and resilience and he has first-hand knowledge of how all players can contribute. When we first met, it was immediately clear how sincere and very real he is. While he appreciates the need for discipline, players love playing for him and I believe he has outstanding qualities to help make the Jets a competitive, winning team." Consultant Charley Casserly: "Todd Bowles is an excellent football coach. He's proven that ability, both as a defensive coordinator and as an interim head coach. He does a good job of relating to players and they want to play for him. I have a lot of confidence in his ability to be a head coach in the National Football League." Consultant Ron Wolf: "I was very impressed with Todd Bowles during his interview. The experience of serving as an interim head coach and running the defensive side of the ball showed through. His preparation in assessing both the Jets and the entire AFC East showed a great attention to detail. His presentation from constructing a staff, to planning, to player philosophy, to his thoughts on making a team better were all tremendous." Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians: "I couldn't be more happy for Todd. The Jets got themselves a tremendous coach and an even better person. We're sorry as hell to lose him but we all knew this day was coming, especially with the job he did here the last two years. Todd and I go back more than 30 years. He was one of my captains at Temple and it was obvious then how special he was. His passion for the game and intelligence are as high as anyone I've ever been around. Todd's been ready for this for a long time and I'm ecstatic for him to finally get the opportunity." Bowles: "It's an honor and privilege to coach the Jets. I want to thank Mr. Johnson and Mike Maccagnan for this opportunity. I can't help but be humbled by the chance to coach this team. I am going to do everything I can to build a consistent winner." Jets defensive line coach Karl Dunbar expected to join Rex Ryan with Buffalo Bills (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media January 14, ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Jets' defensive line coach, Karl Dunbar, was at Rex Ryan's introductory press conference Wednesday with the Bills, indicating the Jets are losing Dunbar to Buffalo. Ryan declined to say after his press conference if he will bring Dunbar with him to Buffalo. Dunbar, meanwhile, posted an apparent farewell message on his Twitter account: "Thanks to all my Jet Fans for the support the past 3 yrs!" 10 P a g e
Dunbar coached the Jets' most talented unit, but it would unreasonable to think that the play of Sheldon Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson and Damon Harrison will suffer significantly without Dunbar around. The Jets' new head coach, Todd Bowles, has a defensive background, albeit as a secondary coach. Bowles reportedly will hire Dolphins defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers to be his defensive coordinator. Rodgers has coached NFL defensive linemen since 2003, with the Cowboys. It is the only position group he has ever coached. So the Jets' defensive linemen appear to be in good hands with their new coaching staff. On Tuesday night, Ryan attended a Sabres game in Buffalo with four Jets assistants who are also expected to join him with the Bills: secondary coach Tim McDonald, linebackers coach Bobby April III, offensive assistant Tony Sparano Jr. and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman. Dunbar was not in that group, but his appearance Wednesday at Ryan's press conference made it clear that he won't be sticking around the Jets, to see if Bowles might retain him. Ex-Giants scout calls Jets' Mike Maccagnan 'as hard a worker as there is' (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advanced Media January 14, With Mike Maccagnan (finally) in place as the Jets' general manager, what's the low-down on him? (Aside from his wonderful yearbook photo, about which there can never be enough reminders.) We covered some of this ground here, but now a former NFL scout has weighed in (on the record!) with some impressions he gleaned from having worked alongside Maccagnan in league scouting circles over the years. Greg Gabriel spent nearly 30 years in NFL scouting, including 16 with the Giants during a period in which they won a pair of Super Bowls and three NFC championships. He later was the Bears' director of college scouting for nine years. He now writes for the National Football Post and he thinks highly of Maccagnan. This is from what Gabriel wrote for NFP about Maccagnan on Wednesday: I first met Mike on a school call in the late 1990's when I was with the New York Giants, and he was with Washington. You learn a lot about a scout when you are on the road with them. You see their work habits, how diligent they are, how professional they are. Trust me, scouts "scout" other scouts. They know who is good and who "goes through the motions". Mike Maccagnan is as hard a worker as there is when he is on the road. He always was one of the first scouts in the building and the last to leave. When the "pro liaison" came in to talk about the prospects, Mike would ask important pertinent questions, not the typical scouting questions. When you make school calls, there are typically two or three meeting rooms the school makes available for scouts to watch game tape. Generally, many of the scouts gather in one room where they watch tape but many also have a high degree of conversation. Maccagnan was not one of those guys. He would go into a room either by himself or with a few veteran scouts, where he knew he could make the best use of his time. When practice began, Mike, again, would be by himself watching practice, where he could have full concentration on the task at hand. That is one thing I always respected about him when I was with him at various schools. I saw first-hand how important it was to him to not waste his time and get the evaluation right. 11 P a g e
Gabriel goes on to point out that he thought Maccagnan would get the Jets' GM job as soon as he heard Charley Casserly had been brought on as a consultant. Casserly had hired Maccagnan twice before, and the two have known each other for 20 years. But, Gabriel added, "Casserly would not put his reputation on the line by hiring Maccagnan just because they were friends." Jets' Sheldon Richardson heading to Pro Bowl after all (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advanced Media January 14, The Pro Bowl is the NFL's annual all-star game that no one says they care for but millions still watch, because football runs this country. And when Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson learned last month he hadn't been selected for this year's game, he said his immediate response was "too explicit for TV." But now he's going to be going anyway. Richardson, the 2013 NFL defensive rookie of the year, was initially chosen as a Pro Bowl alternate at defensive tackle. But the Jets on Wednesday announced he would be going because Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy begged out. McCoy has a knee injury that had cut his season short. The initial Pro Bowl rosters were announced after Week 16. At the time, Richardson had as many sacks as McCoy and one fewer than Rams rookie Aaron Donald. But Richardson graded out as the NFL's secondbest 3-4 defensive end behind the Texans' J.J. Watt. That Donald got picked over Richardson prompted then-jets head coach Rex Ryan to say Donald "can't hold [Richardson's] jock as a player," though Ryan never mentioned Donald by name. Center Nick Mangold is the only other Jets player headed to the Pro Bowl. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, running back Chris Ivory, and left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson had also been chosen as alternates. The Pro Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 25 in Glendale, Ariz. Richard Sherman to Todd Bowles: 'You are the best D-coordinator I've seen' (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advanced Media January 14, Todd Bowles is going to be the Jets' head coach, and the Jets ought to be making the news official any moment now. The hold up? Bowles intends to accept the job, but he hasn't yet signed his contract, which a league source said would be a four-year deal. Details are being negotiated on Wednesday. But how good is Bowles, an Elizabeth native who had been the Cardinals' defensive coordinator the last two years? In 2013, the Cardinals were second in the NFL in DVOA, per Football Outsiders. This past season, the Cardinals' were seventh even though there were significant personnel setbacks, with seasonending injuries to ex-jets linebacker John Abraham (concussion) and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett (torn ACL), plus inside linebacker Daryl Washington's season-long suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. 12 P a g e
But get a load of what Richard Sherman, the Seahawks' cornerback and one of the game's premiere defenders, had to say to Bowles after the Seahawks beat the Cardinals last month in Glendale, Ariz. KNXV- TV in Phoenix caught the following audio and video NEW YORK POST Chan Gailey s gift: Getting most out of offensive talent (Bart Hubbuch) New York Post January 15, Chan Gailey won t be bringing his own system to the Jets if, as expected, Todd Bowles picks him to be their next offensive coordinator. Gailey doesn t have a system. He was a washout as a head coach with the Cowboys, Georgia Tech and the Bills, but Gailey s creativity and chameleon-like adaptability as a play-caller have earned him plenty of admirers around the NFL. Look no further than Bowles himself the Jets new head coach reportedly insisted on Gailey despite no previous coaching connection and even though Gailey had been out of football since Buffalo fired him following the 2012 season. The one thing about Chan is that you can t peg him, former Giants coach Dan Reeves told The Post on Wednesday. He s been in a lot of different systems with a lot of different schemes, and he s been successful in all of them. Reeves should know, considering he and Gailey are from the same town Americus, Ga. and Reeves even coached Gailey in Little League baseball before Gailey spent six seasons on Reeves staff in Denver in the 1980s. Gailey liked to spread the field and throw the ball for most of his three seasons with the Bills (particularly in 2011, when Buffalo threw the ball almost 60 percent of the time), but that doesn t guarantee he would use the same approach with Gang Green. After all, Gailey was the offensive coordinator with the Steelers in 1997 when Pittsburgh reached the AFC Championship Game running the ball 56 percent of the time. And even as recently as Gailey s final year in Buffalo, the Bills pass-run ratio was nearly While Gailey emphasized giving speedy players space and was fond of running out of the shotgun, with screen passes and short throws to receivers in Buffalo, don t count on the Jets being a replica. Good luck predicting what he s going to do with the Jets, said NFL Network analyst Gil Brandt, the former Cowboys personnel executive. You might think he s going to be run-first because of the Steelers or passhappy because of the Bills, but I bet you he s looked at a hundred tapes while he s been out these past two years, knows the trends and will put his own spin on them. Whatever style the 63-year-old Gailey decides is right for the offense-challenged Jets, his track record as strictly a play-caller says it is likely to be successful even with Geno Smith as Gang Green s incumbent starting quarterback. Not only did four of Gailey s offenses finish in the NFL s top 10 in scoring, but he also got journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick a $60 million contract in Buffalo and in his most amazing feat managed 13 P a g e
to squeeze more than 3,000 all-purpose yards and 22 touchdowns out of Tyler Thigpen as the Chiefs playcaller in Chan has always done a great job of coaching the personnel that he s got instead of forcing a system on his personnel, Reeves said. That s why you can t peg him. He s so versatile and very adaptable. Gailey s creativity as a play-caller also is proven. As Pittsburgh s wide receivers coach in 1995, he came up with the Slash package for Kordell Stewart part-time quarterback, part-time running back, part-time wide receiver and then got within four points of the Super Bowl two years later with Stewart as his starter. Gailey s track record isn t impeccable, though. The fact his teams finished 15th or worse in total offense (including 24th and 26th) in five of the seven seasons he has been an NFL offensive coordinator has to be considered a red flag. Gailey s biggest task with the Jets will be trying to develop Smith, which is the one thing Brandt is comfortable predicting about Gailey. Chan has great patience and his work ethic is immense, and that s going to make Geno work harder, Brandt said. If Geno lets Chan do what he does best, the Jets quarterback is going to be a lot better than he was last year and their offense is, too. Anger over Sheldon Richardson s Pro Bowl snub now moot (John Demarzo) New York Post January 15, When Sheldon Richardson was initially snubbed for the Pro Bowl, he said his reaction was too explicit for TV. Now, the Jets star defensive tackle is singing a different tune, as Richardson was selected to his first Pro Bowl on Wednesday, replacing the injured Gerald McCoy of the Buccaneers. When the Pro Bowl rosters were announced on Dec. 23, Richardson was named only as an alternate, leading former Jets coach Rex Ryan to criticize the decision. If it kept [Richardson] out of the Pro Bowl because some guy had X amount of sacks, and that guy can t hold his jock to be honest with you, as a player, I think that is kind of strange to me, Ryan said the following day. I guess you guys will figure out who I am talking about. I see the tapes. This guy deserves to be in there. There is no doubt about it. The guy with X amount of sacks appeared to be the Rams Aaron Donald, who finished with nine sacks, one more than Richardson, who was Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2013 and had a breakout 2014, posting eight sacks and spearheading a Jets defense that ranked fifth against the run and allowed only 3.8 yards per carry. Center Nick Mangold is the Jets only other Pro Bowler, though that could change, as players from the teams that make the Super Bowl will not participate. That could lead to additional roster changes. How Todd Bowles is the anti-rex Ryan and exactly what Jets need (George Willis) 14 P a g e
New York Post January 15, Paul Palmer can t wait for the Jets opener next season, but he won t be wearing anything green and white. We all going to be wearing our Temple shirts, Palmer told The Post on Wednesday. There s going to be five or six of us there, wearing our Temple shirts and carrying on. You ll see us. Palmer, a star running back at Temple in the late 1980s, is now one of the biggest Jets fans on the planet after Todd Bowles, his former college teammate, was named to replace Rex Ryan as head coach. Palmer and Bowles played together at Temple when Bowles was a defensive back and Palmer finished second to Vinny Testaverde for the 1986 Heisman Trophy. Palmer, now a high school football coach in South Jersey and broadcaster for Temple football, described Bowles as a born leader who influenced his teammates by action more than words. He was very confident, but he was quiet, Palmer said. As a ballplayer, he would lead by example. He s not a loud person. But he s someone you can trust and he s very knowledgeable. He s going to be someone the Jets can believe in. Former teammates, fellow coaches and those who have played for Bowles describe him as the anti-rex Ryan. He s not going to charm the media or boast and brag about what he s going to accomplish. He earns respect through hard work, dedication and holding people accountable. Former Giants linebacker Carl Banks, who played with Bowles as a member of the Redskins, called him a smart player who has the DNA of a very good coach. Banks said the Jets have found a guy who knows how to make sure that whatever his directive is that everybody s in line with it that is coaching his players. You can tell that by the way his defenses played. Everybody was on the same page. They coached that philosophy in one voice. I m happy for him. I think he s going to make an excellent head coach for the Jets. Ray Mickens was a defensive back for the Jets when Bowles was the team s secondary coach in He described Bowles as a mild-mannered person who was willing to lean on his veteran players. Great coaches listen, learn and then lead, Mickens said. That s what he did that year. He listened to things that were in place and led in his own way. He was a great DB coach for us and he s grown so much. Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams played with Bowles with the Redskins and gave him his first coaching job at Morehouse College. After playing with Todd and watching him on the defensive side of the ball, he was not only a bonecrushing killer, but he knew the other team s offense and made sure everybody else knew where to go, Williams told The Post. You could tell he was the consummate guy, who wanted to be aware of what went on around him on the field. I look at Todd as that little brother I brought to Morehouse and then to Grambling. It makes me feel good knowing where he is today and that I might have had anything to do with that. The Jets figure to be a tough team if they take on the personality of their new head coach. Palmer recalls a time during college when Bowles went to visit a lady friend in South Philadelphia and had an altercation on the subway with a few hostiles. Palmer asked Bowles if he was scared. Why should I be scared in Philly? Bowles said. I grew up in Elizabeth. 15 P a g e
Don t be surprised if Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians shows up to a Jets game wearing one of those Temple T-shirts. Bowles was a freshman when Arians became the head coach at Temple. He later hired Bowles to be his defensive coordinator in Arizona. Watching him grow as a player, he was a coach on the field at all times, Arians said recently. We could do so many things defensively because of him. He s a great teacher, a great communicator and players love him. He s soft spoken but a very good motivator and he can get on them as good as anybody. Quinn helped push Jets to grab Bowles while they could (Brian Costello) New York Post January 15, The Jets ended a cross-country, 2 ½-week search for a head coach by hiring someone who grew up just minutes from their training center in Florham Park, N.J. The Jets officially named Todd Bowles, a 51-year-old from Elizabeth, as their new head coach Wednesday. The Jets chose Bowles after two interviews in the last week. They have hired the anti-rex Ryan. Bowles brings a quiet demeanor, who is liked by his players but also not afraid to discipline them. The Jets believe he will be someone who can unify a franchise that was fractured over the past two years. Despite a public perception Quinn was the favorite, a source said Bowles was just as popular, if not more. After the first round of interviews, the Jets desire was to interview both Bowles and Quinn again. To that end, the Jets were prepared to fly to Seattle on Saturday night if the Seahawks lost to the Panthers in the playoffs. They were not definitely going to offer him the job. Instead, they wanted to talk to him again. When the Seahawks won to advance to this week s NFC Championship Game, that plan ended. If the Jets wanted to wait to talk to Quinn again, it would not happen until after the NFC Championship Game, at the earliest. If the Seahawks were to defeat the Packers on Sunday, the Jets would not be able to offer him the job until after the Super Bowl. With the Falcons and other teams also interested in Bowles, the Jets lined up a second interview with him for Tuesday. Owner Woody Johnson, team president Neil Glat and consultants Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf had been impressed with Bowles in the first interview Jan. 7. In the second interview, new general manager Mike Maccagnan got to meet Bowles. A group of Bowles, Maccagnan, Johnson, Casserly and Wolf went to dinner that night. At one point, Maccagnan and Bowles were left alone. Maccagnan came away convinced Bowles was the right choice, and the two sides agreed on a four-year deal worth a little more than $16 million. Bowles will work with Maccagnan to try to revive a Jets organization that has not made the playoffs or had a winning record since It s an honor and privilege to coach the Jets, Bowles said in a statement from the team. I want to thank Mr. Johnson and Mike Maccagnan for this opportunity. I can t help but be humbled by the chance to coach this team. I am going to do everything I can to build a consistent winner. Johnson was impressed with Bowles record. From entering the league as an undrafted free agent in Washington to becoming a very successful coordinator in Arizona, Johnson said, Todd has earned everything he has achieved. He is a hard-working 16 P a g e
and dedicated leader who has garnered the respect of players and coaches. I am confident that Todd and Mike Maccagnan are the right combination to lead this team. With Bowles coming to the Jets, Quinn is the favorite to get the Falcons job, and Atlanta is willing to wait for him, according to an ESPN report. Sources said Bowles approach of being something between an players coach and a disciplinarian appealed to the team. They felt players would play hard for him, but would also be held accountable, something that was lacking under Ryan. The Jets also liked Bowles ideas about putting together a coaching staff. Bowles wants to hire former Bills and Cowboys coach Chan Gailey as his offensive coordinator, according to a source. He also is expected to hire Dolphins defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers as his defensive coordinator, according to a source. Bowles, 51, was considered one of the top head-coaching candidates on the market. He spent the past two seasons in Arizona, where the Cardinals were fifth in scoring defense this year. I think he s going to be a great head coach, Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell said in a telephone interview Wednesday. He has all the tangibles. He s smart. He knows how to put his talent in position to win. He s a natural leader. People want to follow him because he does it the right way consistently. I m excited for him to see how well he does. The Cardinals defense had to overcome injuries and suspensions to some key players this past season. Bowles adaptability is something that impressed the Jets. I think that s what makes him a great coach, Campbell said. He knows what his players do well and he puts them in position to do well. He knows if what an outside linebacker s strengths are and he ll put him in those situations to excel and try to keep him out of situations where he will struggle. Campbell supported the Jets view that Bowles will put his foot down when he needs to. He yells rarely but he will get after you, especially when the energy is low, Campbell said. He ll get on you real quick. As long as you have good energy and you make mistakes, he ll fix them, but if you don t have good energy, he ll get after you real quick. He definitely has a fire behind him when he needs to. Bill Parcells gives his scouting report of Todd Bowles (Steve Serby) New York Post January 15, Bill Parcells has appreciated and respected Todd Bowles since the 1980s. Parcells brought Bowles as an aide to Dallas and Miami, and The Tuna is confident he won t be a fish out of water as the Jets head coach. I have a high regard for Todd Bowles, Parcells said. He has a lot of experience, both as a player and as a coach working for different organizations and different people. I was paying attention to him when he was running the secondary at the Redskins as a player when I was coaching against him. That s something that I would notice. I think he is a highly intelligent guy, and I m very hopeful that he does well. Parcells, like Bowles, is a Jersey guy, which helped him when he began coaching the Giants in 1983 and through the rest of the decade. Asked about Bowles temperament, Parcells said, I think he s an even-keeled guy. 17 P a g e
