1 2015 SPORT RECOGNITION AWARDS Coach Developer Don Watts Award Leigh Goldie Multisport Leigh has dedicated his life to sport. He has taught in the department of Physical Education and Kinesiology at Grande Prairie Regional College for the past 40 years. During this time he served as the chair of the department for 9 years and athletic director for three years. He has taught classes and presented at professional conferences, sharing his insight on the mental skills related to coaching performance. Leigh is not only a teacher; he is an asset to the coaching world. In 1984, Leigh founded the Wolves Volleyball Club where he was the club director for 25 ears. He has hosted numerous volleyball camps and has coached teams at the provincial and national level. Leigh s involvement in coaching has lead him to become certified through the NCCP as a multisport course conductor; learning facilitator; advanced learning facilitator; master learning facilitator; and program evaluator. He has been a multisport course conductor for over 100 courses and is still actively involved with the NCCP, assisting with coach development. In addition to all his work with the NCCP, Leigh is also the president for Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, president for Volleyball Alberta and chair of the Grand Prairie Sport Council.
2 Coach Developer Sport Award Beth Veale- Ringette Over the past 40 years, Beth has contributed to the sport of ringette as a player, coach, instructor, committee member, author and coach developer. In the late 1970s, Beth began coaching in the Calgary area. She has coached every level from community to competitive. As a coach, Beth always looked for new and innovated ways to make her athletes better. Her coaching methods paid off as her teams were very successful. Beth s teams have won a total of 25 medals. Beth is dedicated to the development of coaches. She has written many instructional resources for Ringette Canada Coaching, as well as athlete committees. Three major works that she helped write included: Community Sport Initiation; Competition Introduction; and Competition Development. These resources are used as the curriculum for coaching courses today. To further her involvement in coaching, Beth took the Level 3 technical course and became a conductor/ learning facilitator. She has been involved as a facilitator for the last 30 years, facilitating more than 300 clinics. In the last six years, Beth has continued to advance her involvement in coaching by getting her Master Learning Facilitator in Ringette. Beth states that her mission is to continue to ensure that our coaching programs continue to develop the very best coaches in the world.
3 Coaching Recognition Robin McKeever - Cross Country Skiing Robin McKeever started his career as a successful athlete in cross country skiing. In his athletic career, Robin was named as a Paralympian, Olympian and 11-time able-bodied national champion. However, in 2001, Robin switched from being an athlete to being a sighted guide for his brother. It was at this point that Robin became a coach. Robin s coaching history has been outstanding. He has helped his athletes reach the podium on numerous occasions and they have never finished below 16 th position. His most successful story though has been coaching his brother Brian. Robin has led his brother to 13 medals over the course of three Paralympics and 10 of those medals have been gold brought new triumphs as Robin s athletes Chis Klebl and Mark Arendz attended the Paralympics in Sochi., where both of his athletes medaled. Chris won the gold medal in sit-ski and Mark won silver in biathlon. Robin also attended the 2014 World Championships where Team Canada won gold, silver and bronze. In the 2014/2015 season, Robin will be the head coach for Team Canada as they participate in the World Cup.
4 Coaching Recognition Duane Bratt - Lacrosse Duane Bratt began lacrosse as an athlete but transitioned into the roles of coach, referee, and administrator. In 1975, Duane started playing minor lacrosse in Calgary. His athletic career continued to progress as he played for several teams including the Aurora Stallions; Calgary Mountaineers; and at the University of Windsor. In 1995, Duane transition from player to coach. He has coached numerous teams over the years and is still actively involved in coaching today. Not only is Duane a dedicated coach, but he is also the Canadian Lacrosse Association s (CLA) National Resource Person for coaching. In this role, Duane designs coaching programs and develops resources. One of the programs that he has been instrumental in developing is the CLA Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) program. Duane is the Vice-president Technical Development for Alberta Lacrosse Association and Vice- President of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. He s the chair of the LTDA Committee and has been a Master Learning Facilitator and Evaluator for more than a decade. Some of the highlights of Duane s career include: receiving the James McFall Memorial Award to become a Life Member of the Alberta Lacrosse Association (2009); coaching the Calgary Boykiws to the Ross Cup - Canadian Senior A Men's Field Lacrosse Champions (2010); and receiving the Queen s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his work in lacrosse (2012).
5 Coaching Recognition David Flewwelling - Diving In 2014, David had a successful year as the Canadian National Diving Coach. He attended numerous national and international competitions including the Canada Cup in Quebec, the World Cup in Shanghai, the World Junior Championships in Russia and the Italian Grand Prix in Italy. During the course of the year, athletes that David has coached have won a total of 9 medals; six gold, one silver and two bronze medals. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, in 2014, David also attended the FINA Aquatics conference in Florida to increase his knowledge and coaching skills. When Dive Canada implemented difficult dive requirements, David s love for coaching enabled him to think outside the box and create a second tier for divers in Alberta. This second tier allowed more divers to participate in meets and compete and gain experience in the sport they love. David is a role model to the kids that he coaches, providing them with leadership and both diving and life skills.
6 Officiating Duncan Daniels White-water Slalom Canoe and Kayak Duncan Daniels has been officiating in white-water slalom canoe and kayak since Through his commitment and passion for the sport, Duncan has progressed through the officiating ranks working his way up to the chief judge and official level. This has earned him the ability to officiate at provincial, national and international events. In 2014, Duncan officiated at the Alberta Summer Games, Pan American Championships, Canoe Kayak Canada National Championships and the International Canoe Federation Senior World Championships. Dedicated to his sport and committed to staying current and up-to-date on officiating practices, Duncan attended the ICF International Technical Official Seminar in Maryland in In 2015, he will train with the Inte4rnational Canoe federation technical official team to prepare for the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Duncan plays an active role in the development of officials by being a course conductor and providing mentorship to officials across Canada.
7 Officiating Bill Popadych Tennis Bill s officiating career started in 1999 when his wife decided that she wanted to pursue becoming a tennis official. Bill also became involved and soon began climbing through the officiating ranks. Bill s progression continued and recently he was awarded his gold badge as a chief umpire. Bill is currently the only official in Canada to receive this status. Some of the highlights from Bill s officiating career have included being the chief umpire at the World Master Games and being a referee at the Canada Senior National Championships. Bill has been a dedicated official and has gone above and beyond just officiating. Bill had also contributed by being a coordinator for officials, assigning them to appropriate sanctioned events. He volunteers countless hours of his time to sit on committees, assists the Board of Directors as a technical consultant and mentors other officials through certification workshops, and education opportunities. Bill s passion for tennis as well as his spirit of upholding competition has made him an icon in the tennis community.
8 Officiating Deirdre Zuk - Netball Deirdre has been an umpire in the sport of netball for 15 year. She has dedicated her life to officiating, working her way up the officiating ranks. In May of 2014, Deirdre completed the National level certification, which is the highest level in Canada. She is currently the only National level umpire in Alberta and one of six national umpires across Canada. In addition to umpiring, Deirdre also volunteers her time as the Umpire Director. In this position Deirdre has spent many hours mentoring and developing umpires at all levels. Another position that Deirdre also willingly fulfills is Manager of Bench Officials. Recently, she organized and managed all of the bench officials for the American Federation Netball Association Regional World Cup qualifying event. At these types of events, Deirdre is required to coordinate and train more than 20 volunteers to ensure that rules and regulations are upheld at each tournament. Deirdre s ambition and love for officiating has motivated her to work towards becoming an international umpire, which is the highest level attainable in the sport.
9 Volunteer Recognition Charlotte McNaughton Orienteering Charlotte McNaughton has an extensive resume of volunteer history and experience. In 1994, Charlotte started working as the promotions volunteer at the Foothills Wanderers Orienteering Club, a position that she still holds today. Since beginning her volunteerism in orienteering, Charlotte has held many positions at the provincial, national and international levels. Some of these have included: Executive Director, President, helping with development initiatives, and coordinating numerous conferences and fundraisers. Charlotte s accomplishments while volunteering at Alberta Orienteering include developing new initiatives like the high performance program for elite athletes and developing a sportspecific longer term athlete development program. Charlotte has also dedicated her time to the Canadian Olympics Committee. In 2014, Charlotte attended the Sochi Olympics as part of the Canada mission staff. Charlotte s leadership abilities and dedication has helped contribute to the development the sport of orienteering.
10 Volunteer Recognition Dan Syrotuik Football Dan had been involved in Football Alberta since He began his volunteer career by becoming one of the original Football Alberta board members. His involvement in football Alberta has involved various roles such as NCCP Coaching Certification, Executive Vice President of Programs, President, and Chair of Membership Services. Although he has held many positions, his most extensive work has been in the field of coaching. After being drafted and playing for the Edmonton Eskimos, Dan decided to go back to school and get his Masters and then his PhD. During that time, Dan became the assistant coach for the University of Alberta Golden Bears. He coached the team for 17 years, having worked with the defensive line, linebackers, defensive backs, offensive backs, special teams and acted as defensive coach and strength and conditioning coach. Over the years, Dan has had many achievements; some of the most noteworthy ones have included: obtaining his level 4 in coaching, the highest attainable in football; producing the original National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) manuals; being a master course instructor for the NCCP; and participating in research projects at the U of A involving kinesiology, athlete movement performance and mental tendencies.
11 Volunteer Recognition Paula MacWilliams Netball Paula has been involved in Netball Alberta for 30 years. In 1992, Paula was appointed the President of Netball Alberta. During this time, she also coached and started a school clinic program. The school clinic program involved teaching netball to students as part of their physical education classes. Through the school clinic program, Paula wanted to share the benefits of our sport with children and encourage them to become involved in the sport either at the junior level or through local leagues. The program was a success and more than 4,000 students participate annually in the sport through the program. Netball Alberta has since employed a development officer to continue Paula s work. In 2012, after serving for 10 years as the President of Netball Alberta, Paula turned her focus to coaching, taking on the role of Coaching Director. She has been instrumental in helping many individuals become qualified National Coaching Certification Program coaches. Paula has also played a key role in helping teams medal at various national and international competitions and has served as a national team selector and manager.
12 Volunteer Recognition Malcom Kano KidSport In 1984, Malcom began working for the Alberta Sport Council. During his tenure there, he served as the coordinator for 15 Alberta Summer and Winter Games. In 1988, Malcom was selected to attend the Olympic Academy of Canada. In 1995, Malcom became one of KidSport s first provincial board members. He helped launch the KidSport Lethbridge chapter, which was the first local chapter development in Alberta and became the organization s first Chair, a position he still holds today. Malcom s passion for KidSport has motivated him to expand KidSport by encouraging others to start a KidSport chapter. Through Malcom s motivation, 11 new chapters have been created across Alberta. Eventually, the Lethbridge chapter expanded to include Taber in its boundaries, becoming known as KidSport Lethbridge and Taber. To increase awareness of KidSport and keep chapters sustainable, Malcom helped organize an annual golf tournament, which has been successfully operating for eight years. In addition to being Chair of KidSport, Malcom has also sat on the Lethbridge Sport Council Board for the past five years. Through his involvement with the Sport Council he is committed to bringing one major event and 10 national championships to Lethbridge over the next four year period. In 2014, the Lethbridge/Taber chapter has helped 380 kids participate in sport. Over his 20 years of involvement, Malcom has helped more than 69,500 children participate in sport.
