The Braves are 2-0 for the first time since and trying for their first 3-0 start since Bradley is giving up just 50.0 points per game and has held its first two opponents of a season to 60 points or less for first time since (fifth time in program history). The Braves have won their road opener in four of the last six seasons. Bradley has won the last two meetings with Illinois and three of the last five in the series with the Illini. Brewer started 16 contests and averaged 8.1 points per game last year as she capped the season by averaging 9.6 points per outing and shooting 45 percent from three-point range over the final 14 outings. The most experienced player on the roster, Schlueter has started 64 consecutive games and is the top returning scorer at 10.5 points per game. Schlueter s 796 career points rank 34th all-time on The Hilltop. In addition to the experienced backcourt, junior forward Vanessa Markert and sophomore forward Chelsea Brackmann are expected to anchor the frontcourt. Markert led Bradley with 38 blocks last season to go with 10.3 points per game and 5.1 boards. She shot a team-best 46.3 percent from the field in Brackmann made a big impact in her rookie season and earned a spot on the MVC All-Freshman Team after averaging 8.0 points and 6.7 boards per contest. Gorski and the Braves will look to build on last year s improvement and could become the first Bradley team to increase its overall and Valley win

In fact, it s just the fifth time in program history Bradley held its first two opponents of a season to less than 60 points with three of the four previous times resulting in overall records of or better. Four of Bradley s last five opponents have failed to reach the 60-point mark dating back to last season. Wednesday s game against Lincoln (Mo.) was one for the record book with the Blue Tigers shooting just 21.9 percent from the field in the contest. The 53 points off the bench marked just the second time in the last six years BU s reserves topped the 50-point mark. Four reserves scored at least eight points in Wednesday s outing. On the season, Bradley s reserves own a scoring advantage over their counterparts. The Braves have received an average of 36.0 points, 30.5 rebounds, 8.5 assists, 2.5 blocks and 3.0 steals per game from the bench through two games, while reserves have accounted for nearly 46 percent of the team s minutes and shot 49.2 percent from the field. Markert, who had four blocks in just 15 minutes Wednesday against Lincoln, has moved into ninth in school history with 87 career blocks. Dating back to last season, she has turned back 15 shots in her last five games. During that eight-game stretch, the Braves are 7-0 when committing 15 or fewer turnovers. Bradley s next home game is slated for Saturday, Dec. 2 against Illinois-Chicago with the outing against the Flames marking the 100th game for the Braves at Renaissance Coliseum. A victory against UIC would give Bradley four consecutive home victories to match the longest win streak in the eight-year history of Renaissance Coliseum.

4 On the mark After shooting 23.5 percent in the first half of the victory over Omaha, Bradley got things going offensively in the second half by shooting a blistering 67.9 percent (19-for-28) from the field. In fact, the Braves missed their first two shots of the second half and were 1-for-4 shooting to start the third quarter before going on to connect on 18- of-24 (75 percent) of its shots over the final 17:30 of play. The 67.9 percent shooting in the second half matched Bradley s best shooting performance in a half since the first half of the Dec. 4, 2010 victory over Saint Louis (81-64) in which the Braves were 16-for-23 (69.6 percent). Juniors Vanessa Markert and Shunseere Kent combined to go 12-for- 17 (70.6) percent with 28 points, eight boards, one assist and three blocks after halftime. strong debut Junior college transfer Shunseere Kent had a strong debut, making 6-of-8 from the field in the second half as she helped highlight the victory over Omaha to start the season with 17 points. Kent s 17 points were the most by a Brave in a debut since Kelly Krumwiede tallied 22 points against Illinois-Chicago as a freshman to start the season. Kent also added six rebounds and one assist in the victory. 43rd season The season marks the 43rd year of intercollegiate competition for Bradley Women s Basketball. The Braves will be playing their eighth season at Renaissance Coliseum and 35th as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. returning numbers While Bradley lost senior Leti Lerma to graduation, the Braves return four of the team s top five scorers in and six of the top eight in scoring from last year. Bradley is one of five teams in the MVC returning at least 70 percent of its scoring and 60 percent of its rebounding from the previous season. In fact, Bradley s 42.4 points per game returning this season ranks fourth among Valley teams. For the first time since , the Braves return two players which scored 10 or more points per game the previous year in senior guard Anneke Schlueter (10.5 ppg) and junior forward Vanessa Markert (10.3 ppg). Bradley s seventh-place finish in was the team s best since The last time the Braves had a three-win improvement both overall and in MVC play was when Bradley finished overall and 11-7 in conference action. Gorski is the only Bradley coach to lead the squad to a three-win improvement in MVC play in their first season. Bradley had 15 or less turnovers a total of 15 times in , with eight of those coming in the final 12 contests. The Braves were 7-2 in their last nine outings in which they had 15 or fewer turnovers. 6 To Markert we will go Bradley boasts one of the strongest returning frontcourts in the Missouri Valley Conference with the combination of sophomore Chelsea Brackmann and junior Vanessa Markert combining to average 18.0 points, 11.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 blocks per game in Markert scored 10.3 points per contest last year as a sophomore to become just the fifth Bradley underclassman to score 300 points in the last 11 years. She scored in double figures in nine of the last 15 outings to average 11.3 points per game on 48 percent shooting during that stretch. Markert picked up where she left off, scoring a team-high 19 points in the season-opening victory against Omaha. She and Brackmann have combined for 23.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 5.0 blocks and 1.0 steal per game this season, while shooting 19-for-31 (61.3 percent) from the field. something brewing One of Bradley s top defenders, senior guard Danielle Brewer had a late season surge in scoring in double figures in four of the last five and seven of the last 10 contests to close the season. During that 10-game stretch, Brewer was second on the team in scoring at 10.3 points per outing and connected on 15-of-30 (50 percent) three-point attempts. She missed the final four non-conference games due to injury before returning for the MVC opener. 13 A member of the school s Athletics Hall of Fame, Andrea (McAllister) Gorski returned to The Hilltop when she was named the ninth head coach in program history in April 2016 and is in her second season as head coach at her alma mater. Gorski returned to Bradley from Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois, where she spent the previous three years as associate head coach on former Bradley assistant Cindy Stein s staff. Gorski entered coaching shortly after graduating from Bradley in 1992 with a degree in business management and administration, serving as a graduate assistant for the Braves in before venturing into the private sector. She returned to coaching three years later, taking over as head coach of Ladywood High School in February She led her squad to a (.650) record in 12 seasons at the Livonia, MI, school and the Blazers claimed 11 district titles and a pair of conference championships during her prep coaching career. Gorski was a threetime Catholic League Coach of the Year and was selected as the state coach of the year in 2005 by the Associated Press, Detroit Free Press and Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. A 1996 Bradley Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Gorski was a first-team All-Gateway Conference selection as a senior in Her sophomore season included a school-record 12 conference victories and her final three seasons mark the only time in program history the Braves finished in the top half of the league standings in three consecutive seasons.
