8 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 31, Rams 17 November 5, 2006 Edward Jones Dome 66,191 KANSAS CITY ST. LOUIS Thanks to three first-half turnovers by the Rams and a season-high 172 rushing yards out of RB Larry Johnson, the Chiefs escaped St. Louis with a win in the Governor s Cup series. Chiefs RB Dee Brown pounced on the first fumble after WR Dane Looker muffed a P Dustin Colquitt punt at the Rams 14-yard line. That set up a Johnson oneyard TD run for a 7-0 lead. On the next possession, Chiefs DE Jared Allen sacked and stripped St. Louis QB Marc Bulger at the Rams 46-yard line. Rookie DT Stephen Williams recovered the fumble and watched his offense go for a knockout blow on the very next play. QB Damon Huard tossed a perfect 43-yard pass to WR Samie Parker down to the three-yard line. Huard then found TE Tony Gonzalez in the end zone for a TD and a 14-0 lead. LB Keyaron Fox forced a third St. Louis fumble, this time by RB Steven Jackson, on the next series. Allen recovered the ball for Kansas City at the St. Louis 33-yard line, setting up a 42-yard K Lawrence Tynes field goal to open the game with 17 unanswered points. Staring down a 17-0 deficit and searching for answers, the Rams switched to a no-huddle offense to shake things up. The change in gameplan seemed to ignite them as Bulger fired back-to-back big gains to WR Isaac Bruce to move inside the Red Zone. From there Jackson bulled across the goal line from two yards out to cut the Chiefs lead to 17-7 in the second quarter. Unfazed, the Chiefs would answer with a crisp, eight-play, 80-yard scoring march. Huard completed three passes on the drive including his second TD pass to Gonzalez, this time from 25 yards out. On the play, Huard side-stepped a blitzing CB Travis Fisher and found his Pro Bowl tight end down the seam to take a 24-7 lead with 0:48 left in the half. The Rams would sneak in a 41-yard field goal from Jeff Wilkins as time expired in the half to make the score at the break. St. Louis would edge closer with a 12-play, 80-yard drive the ended with a Bulger-to-WR Kevin Curtis pass on third-and-goal from the two-yard line. Bulger who completed five of six passes on the drive and the Rams were now within one score at with 3:50 left in the third quarter. Kansas City s offense struggled to find its footing in the second half as it mustered just one first down in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter the Chiefs got rolling from their own six-yard line. Johnson ripped off runs of 15 and 16 yards. Then Huard hooked up with Gonzalez on a big third-down conversion to keep the drive alive. On the very next play, Huard took a hit, but still managed to hit TE Kris Wilson with an 11-yard TD pass to take a lead with 6:20 left in the game. St. Louis drove into the Red Zone, however its comeback bid came up short when Bulger s third and fourth-down passes from inside the five-yard line were batted down. First, S Sammy Knight knocked down the third-down attempt, then S Bernard Pollard iced the Chiefs victory on fourth down. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez caught two touchdown passes, bypassing WR Otis Taylor (57) for the most TD catches in Chiefs history. RB Larry Johnson made his 20th career NFL start. 13 THE LAST GAME Chargers 31, Chiefs 0 December 12, 2010 Qualcomm Stadium 66,780 KANSAS CITY SAN DIEGO The Chiefs suffered a 31-0 setback at Qualcomm Stadium. San Diego racked up 426 yards of total offense and converted 11 of 15 (73.3%) third-down attempts, while the Chiefs registered 67 yards of total offense and were unable to convert any of their 11 third-down tries. The Chiefs defense did force a pair of takeaways as S Eric Berry registered an INT and LB Tamba Hali produced a sack and strip, but Kansas City was unable to convert either of those opportunities into points. Kansas City won the toss and elected to receive. QB Brodie Croyle made his first start since Opening Day of the 2009 campaign, replacing QB Matt Cassel, who underwent an appendectomy early in the week. The Chiefs came out and attempted to establish the running game early but were forced to punt on their first possession. The Chargers took over at their own 33-yard line. On third and one QB Philip Rivers handed off to WR Vincent Jackson on an end around for 14 yards into Chiefs territory. A four-yard scramble on third and two gave the Chargers a fresh set of downs at KC s 32. Rivers connected with Jackson for 10 yards on third down, moving the chains once again. The very next play Rivers found WR Malcom Floyd on a fade in the back corner of the end zone for a 17-yard TD pass to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead with 5:39 remaining in the opening quarter. Both teams went punt for punt before the Chargers constructed another scoring march. RB Mike Tolbert took a handoff around the left side into the end zone advancing the Chargers lead to After a Kansas City punt the Chargers drove into Chiefs territory and an 18-yard gain from RB Darren Sproles moved the Chargers to the KC nine. On the next play Rivers hit Floyd in the corner of the end zone for a nine-yard TD. The catch went under review and the call on the field was upheld, putting the Chargers in front by a 21-0 margin. KC got the ball back, but Croyle was sacked on the final play of the half. The Chargers received the second-half kickoff and converted two third and longs to push into KC territory. Rivers completed three consecutive passes before Berry intercepted the ball near the sideline at the KC 16. The Chargers challenged the call on the field, but the ruling was upheld and KC took over. The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on the turnover and went three and out. Kansas City s defense again came up big when Hali sacked Rivers, forcing a fumble recovered by DE Wallace Gilberry at the Chargers 37. The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on the turnover and punted the ball back to San Diego. The score remained 21-0 in favor of San Diego entering the fourth quarter. After a sack by DE Tyson Jackson at the Chiefs 28 forced a 48-yard FG by K Nate Kaeding. That score pushed the Chargers lead to 24-0 with 8:30 remaining. Chargers CB Antoine Cason returned a Chiefs punt down the sideline 42 yard to the KC 36. The Chiefs challenged the player stepping out of bounds, but the ruling on the field stood and the San Diego took over in KC territory. Sproles rumbled up the middle for 15 yards to the KC 17. Four plays later RB Ryan Mathews scored on a 15-yard TD run, giving the Chargers a 31-0 lead with 3:23 to play. QB Tyler Palko took the helm for the remainder of the game, but the Chiefs were unable to score leaving the final count at 31-0 in favor of San Diego. SD Floyd, 17-yard pass from Rivers (Kaeding kick) (10-67, 6:10). SD Tolbert, 8-yard run (Kaeding kick) (9-69, 5:04). SD Floyd, 9-yard pass from Rivers (Kaeding kick) (9-81, 2:58).
