3 CENTRAL FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF JEFF ZENISEK (Head Coach, 3rd Year, 13-5) Jeff Zenisek, who joined CWU' s coaching staff in 1990 as its defensive coordinator and defensive back coach, begins his third season as head coach this fall. Last year he guided the Wildcats to a 9-2 record and a third-place national ranking and shared the Mt. Rainier League Coach-of-the-Year honor with Pacific Lutheran head coach Frosty Westering. In his rookie campaign, the Wildcats posted a record. Zenisek will also coach the quarterbacks in addition to handling his head coaching duties. The past two seasons he has coached the defensive backs and inside linebackers, respectively.,. Zenisek, 35, is a former CWU player. He played offensive center in 1980 and 198 l. He earned all-district honors and was CWU' s Best Blocker award winner in the latter season. A native of Dubois, Wyo., he graduated from Pinedale High School in Wyoming in At Pinedale, he lettered in football, basketball and track. In football, he earned all-conference honors at linebacker and was voted Team Captain and the Best Blocker award. Zenisek played one season at Wenatchee Valley College and one season at Mt. Hood CC before enrolling at CWU where he earned a BA degree in education in 1983 and a MA in education in Prior to joining the CWU staff, he was the head coach at Orcas Island High School for four years. He compiled a won-loss record and twice (1987 & 1989) was voted Coach-of-the-Year. He also earned Coach-of-the-Year honors in girls basketball ( ). In four years his teams won 59 games and lost 31. His team won a league title and his team placed ninth in the state tournament. He also previously served two seasons at CWU ( ) and two at Washington State University ( ) as a graduate assistant coach. Misc.: Born at Riverton. Married. Wife's name is Robin. They have a three-year-old daughter, Jordan. BRUCE WALKER (Offensive Coordinator, 7th Year) Bruce Walker, 34, begins his first season as CWU' s offensive coordinator this fall. He replaces Greg Olson, who accepted a coaching job at the University of Idaho last spring. W!d!<er"lrtn his seventh season on the CWU coaching staff. This will be his fifth season as offensive line coach. He also coached the defensive line for two seasons. Last season, behind Walker 's offensive line, the Wildcats led the nation in total offense, averaging yards per game. CWU also ranked first in the CFA in rushing, averaging 198.S yards per game. CWU also led the CFA in rushing in In 1988, when Walker coached the defensive line, CWU led the CF A in rushing defense. Walker has also previously served the university as its Director of Athletic Development. This year he will also work with the track-and-field program. He will also be the director of the annual Alumni Golf tournament. He graduated from Eastmont High School in 1978 where he earned All-Mid Valley League honors at linebacker and center. He then played two seasons at Yakima Valley College prior to enrolling at CWU. Walker, who was a two-year starter here at center in the 1980 and 1981 seasons, earned a BA in business administration from CWU in 1983 and a MS in Prior to returning to CWU in the fall of 1988, he worked as an investment broker. Misc.: Born in Pierre, S.D. Married. Wife's name is Sharryn. They have one daughter, Natalie, who will be 2 in October. Brothers, Bill ( ) and Arie (1988) also played for Wildcats. Bill was also outstanding track athlete, earning All-American honors with sixth place finish in shot put in 1988 NAIA national meet ( )I GARRICK REDDEN (Defensive Coordinatm; 1st Year) Garrick Redden, 30, is the newest addition to Central Washington University' s full-time coaching staff. He will be in charge of the defensive backs and will also serve as the defensive coordinator. Redden previously coached at Cal State - Fullerton and at Kamiakin High School in Kennewick. He also served as a graduate assistant at the University of Oregon and the University of Washington. 4 then joined the Kamiakin staff after the program at Fullerton was dropped due to budget restraints. He coached the wide receivers at the University of Washington staff in 1989 and 1990 and worked under CWU grad Keith Gilbertson, now the head coach at Cali for - nia. In 1987 and 1988, he worked under defensive coordinator Denny Schuler at Oregon and assisted with the secondary and the special teams. Redden is a 1983 graduate of Kamiakin High School where he earned 11 letters - three in football, four in basketball and four in track-and-field. He was an all-state defensive back during his junior and senior seasons at Kamiakin and earned All Big Nine Conference honors as a and punter in 1981 and Redden then was a four-year starter at free safety at Eastern Wa5hington earning a B.A. degree in business adminstration with a emphasis in marketing in He earned his M.S. degree in management and program development with an emphasis in athletic adminstration at Oregon in In addition to working with the football program, he will also serve the university as its Director of Athletic Development. CHARLES CHANDLER (Wide Receivers, 8th Year) Charles Chandler begins his eighth season on the CWU coaching staff. He is in charge of the wide receivers. \ Chandler, 32, was a standout wide receiver for CWU in 1984 &i and In 1985, he caught 38 passes for 605 yards. The 38 'ill},;f catches is the l 0th best mark in school history and the 605 yards.ii also ranks l 0th on the all-time list., He earned second team All-Evergreen Conference honors and was an honorable mention All-Northwest pick. He also played two seasons at Olympic CC. Chandler was also a three-year track letterman at CWU. He won the l 10 meter high hurdles at both the 1986 and 1987 district meets and represented cwy at the national meet in 1985, 1986 and He wa5 CWU's Track MVP in 1985, Team Captain in 1986 and 1987 and Most Inspirational Award winner in For the past five seasons, Chandler has served as CWU' s men's and women's head track-and-field coach. He was an assistant track coach at Lake Washington High School (Kirkland) in 1983 and was head coach in He led CWU's men to 17th place finishes in the 1991 and 1992 national meets. His 1990 men's team placed 18th in the national meet. Last spring both the men and women placed second in the district meet. It was the highest finish ever for Central' s women. Played defensive back on undefeated 1963 team. THU AMENT (Running Backs, 1st Year) Thu Ament, 25, joins the Central coaching staff this fall and will coach the running backs. Ament is a graduate of CWU. He earned a B.S. degree in physical education and is returning to Ellensburg to pursue a teaching certificate. He was a member of CWU's squad in the 1988 and 1989 seasons, but did not letter. After earning his degree in 1991, he coached the running backs with the Federal Way Jets, a semiprofessional team in Ament aiso played baseball at the collegiate level, at both Tacoma CC and Washington State University. A native of Saigon, Viet Nam, Ament is a 1987 graduate of Foss High School where he earned three letters in football and baseball and one in basketball. He played flanker and cornerback in football and was an honorable mention all-league pick. He also earned all-league honors in baseball. Ament was the team captain in both sports. BRIAN BENT (Defensive Line, 2nd Year) Brian Bent, who assisted with the offensive line last year, will coach CWU's defensive line this fall, while he completes work on a bachelor's degree in Spanish. Bent, 23, played four seasons at Evangel College (Mo.) prior to transferring to Central Washington. He was an honorable mention All-American his senior season. A native of Seattle, Bent graduated from Ever green High School in 1989 where he competed in football and track. He earned all-state honors in football on both the offensive and defensive line. Misc: Born Married. Wife's name is Tracey. JOHN REED (Outside Linebackers, 5th Year) John Reed, 35, will coach the outside linebackers this fall for the fifth year while he works toward a degree in physical education. Reed is a 1978 graduate of Fort Vancouver High School where he lettered in football and wrestling. For the four years prior to joining the CWU coaching staff, he had been an assistant football coach at Columbia River High School in Vancouver and he coached wrestling at Mt. View High School in 1987 and He also coached football, wrestling and girls track at Jason Lee Junior High School in Vancouver between 1979 and Reed earned a AA degree from Clark CC in Vancouver in 1990 prior to transferring to Central. Misc: Born at Olympia. Married. Wife's name is Kelli. JOHN PICHA (Inside Linebacker<>, 6th year) John Picha begins his sixth season on the C WU coaching staff this fall. He will coach the inside linebackers. In 1988 and 1989, he coached the tight ends. He then coached the defensive line in 1990, 1992 and He took the 1991 season off. A 1984 graduate of Rogers High School in Puyallup, Picha is a former two-year letterman for the Wildcats. He earned honorable mention all-league honors in 1987 and was the recepient of CWU' s Best Blocker award in Picha played two seasons at Wenatchee Valley College before enrolling at CWU, earning second team NW AACC honors during his sophomore season. 5 In 1987 he started all 10 games at center for CWU as the Wildcats averaged yards rushing and set a CFA record with 34 rushing touchdowns. Misc: Born at Puyallup. Brother Tom played football at UPS and is head coach at Bellarmine High School. Also has three sisters. JIM WEST (Defensive Backs, 1st Year) Jim West, 25, will assist Garrick Redden this fall with CWU ' s defensive second ~y while he pursues a teaching certificate. He also plans to work toward a master's degree in athletic administration. West is a 1991 graduate of Western Oregon State College where he earned a B.S. degree in business and economics. He played cornerback for one season at Wenatchee Valley College and two at Western Oregon. He skipped his final year of football eligibility to graduate early. Following graduation from WOSC, he coached the defensive backs for three seasons at Bainbridge High School while working for Boeing. He is a 1987 graduate of Bainbridge, earning three letters in football. He was a two-year starter and earned all-conference honors his senior season. He had five interceptions and also caught 35 passes for 510 yards and averaged 7.8 yards per rush from his slotback position. Misc: Born at Seattle. Single. Worked three years for The Boeing Company as a property accountability analyst. BRIAN BORGEN (Kickers, lstyear) Brian Borgen, 29, will coach the kickers this fall, while he pursues a degree in fitness and sports management at Central Washington University. Borgen is a 1983 graduate of Lakes High School. At Lakes, he earned letters in football and swimming. He then played two seasons at Louisiana State University, earning second team All-Southeast Conference honors one season. For the past two seasons he coached the kickers at Lakes. Misc: Born at Wahoo, Neb. Married. Wife' s name is Jennifer. They have two children, Tyler, 2, and Hannah, I. GARY FREDERICK (Athletic Director, 14th Year) Gary Frederick, who has been Central Washington's athletic director since Sept., 1980, returns to Ellensburg this fall after spending the school year at the N AJA national office in Tulsa, Okla. Frederick was on sabbatical last year and served the NAIA as its interim Director of Championship Events. During Frederick's tenure at CWU, he helped develop the Wildcat athletic program into one of the top small-college programs in the country. For 10 consecutive years between and , CWU was ranked in the Top 8 in the NAIA Men's All-Sports competition. Frederick, 57, has a long affiliation with Central. After graduating from Raymond High School in 1955 he enrolled here. He lettered in football three years ( ) and earned second team all-conference honors in 1957 and first team honors in 1958 at center. He graduated in 1959 with a bachelor of arts degree in education and later earned a masters in physical education from Central and a doctorate in secondary education from the University of Idaho in Frederick coached basketball and baseball at Thorp High School ( ); football, basketball and track at Waitsburg High School ( ) and football and baseball at Central Kitsap ( ) before returning to Ellensburg in From 1967 until 1983, he served as an assistant football coach and was head baseball coach from 1968 until 1978 when he resigned to take over the chairmanship of the physical education department. He gave up the that job when he was named to succeed Adrian "Bink" Beamer as athletic director in the fall of Frederick is CWU ' s winningest baseball coach. In 11 seasons his teams won 234 games and lost 147 and qualified for the NAIA College World Series in 1968 and Three times he was named District I Coach-of-the-Year. Frederick also served as CWU's women's basketball coach between 1983 and In 11 seasons, his teams won 164 games and lost 146 and twice (1986 and 1988) he was named District 1 Coach-of-the-Year. This spring Frederick will auume duties as CWU' s women's softball coach replacing Nancy Katzer. Katzer is now the women's basketball coach. Misc: Born 7-17 at Hoquiam. Wife's name is Bobbi. College: Played one season at Whitworth before transferring to CWU. Has excellent mechanics. Could start for a lot of teams in CFA. Elected one of four team captains for 1994 season. Father (Bill) was Northwest Small College first team all-star quarterback in 1967 for Eastern Washington and is member of University of Idaho football coaching staff. Un cle (Nick Scarpelli) played baseball at Notre Dame. Jon Kitna (QB,, 215, Jr., Tacoma - Lincoln) High School: Graduated from Lincoln High School in Lettered in football (3), basketball (2) and baseball (3). All-league receiver junior season. Switched to QB and earned all-league hon ors senior season. Completed 92 of 180 passes for 1500 yards and IS touchdowns. League MVP. Played forward in basketball, averaging 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Shortstop-pitcher in baseball. All -league three times. Batted.404 junior senior and.440 senior year. College: Redshirted 1991 season. Has started 19 of 20 games past two seasons. With two years left already ranks as all-time passing (5205) and total offense (5462) leader in school history and ranks 12th in passing and ninth in total offense in CFA history. Set state single game rushing record with 347 yards. Played forward and guard in basketball. Team placed eighth in state tournament. College: Played one season at Merced Junior College in California and one at Walla Walla CC prior to transferring to CWU. Used mostly in short yardage situations last year. Netted 85 yards on 23 carries and scored four touchdowns. Also caught one pass for one yard and scored once on a two-point conversion... Has excellent size and speed and is a very good blocker. Was Kittitas County Male Athlete-of-the Year in Rushed for 3,761 yards and scored 60 touchdowns in career. Goreal Hudson (RB,, 180, Sr., Puyallup - Rogers) High School: Graduated from Rogers High School in Lettered in track (3), wrestling (3) and football (3). Captain in all three sports. Played tailback and won Century award in football. College: Played one season at Pacific Lutheran before transferring to CWU. Ranked eighth in CFA for Lutes in kickoff returns in with 20.8 average (25-520). Averaged 26.7 yards on 10 returns in 1992 season for CWU and ranked third in the CF A and sixth nationally. Had 85-yard non-scoring return against Puget Sound. Also netted 34 yards on four rushes and caught six passes for 62 yards. Averaged 20.6 yards on 17 returns last year. Briefly attended Western Washi ngton, but did not play, prior to transferring to CWU. Redshirted 1992 at CWU. Was one of the top running backs in the CFA last year. Tied school-record with seven consecutive 100-yard rushing games, incl uding 205 yards in win at Lewis & Clark ( ). Injured in first half of season finale against Western Washington and fin ished with 994 yards and seven touchdowns. Because of emer gence of Tom Craven wi ll likely be moved to H-back position this fall. Showed ability to catch ball as well as run last fall, catching 22 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns. Wide Receivers Brett Allen (, 6-4, 196, So., Renton - Hazen) High School: Graduated from Hazen in Lettered in football (2), baseball (I) and track (2). Led Seamount League in receiving senior year helping Hazen win league title. First team allleague wide receiver and honorable mention all-league linebacker. Team captain. Was outfielder in baseball and hurdler in track. Competed in state meet in 4x400 relay and in district meet in I I 0 high hurdles and 300 intermediates. College: Redshirted frehsman season and earned letter last year.played mostly on special teams. Misc: Born at Frankfurt, Germany. Was National Merit Scholar and ASB president in high school. Played quarter - back in football, passing for 1,000 yards senior season. Averaged 13 points per game in basketball to earn All-Narrows honors. Placed fourth in the 400 meters (49.94) and ran the third leg on winning 4x400 meter relay (3:17.42) in 1990 State AAA meet. College: Played one season at Colgate University and one at the University of Puget Sound ( 11 catches for 149 yards and four touchdowns) prior to redshirting 1992 season at CWU. Caught 45 passes for 724 yards and I I touchdowns last fall to earn first team Mt. Rainier League honors. Tied school record with three touchdown receptions against Simon Fraser ( ). Caught seven passes for 160 yards against SFU, the I 0th best single-game receiving yards total in school hi story. 10 Wildcats Host Whitworth in Annual Homecoming Contest Conference Overall Mt. Today's Schedule: Whitworth at Central Washington, Pacific Lutheran at Simon Fraser, Puget Sound at Western Washington. 'Cats Still Ranked 22nd Despite Losing Two Straight Central Washington, which hasn' t lost to Whitworth since 1972, will be trying to break a two-game losing streak today when it hosts the Pirates. Whitworth has lost four straight and brings a 1-4 record to Ellensburg. The Pirates opened the season defeating Lewis & Clark 50-19, but since has lost consecutive games to Western Oregon, Willamette, Eastern Oregon and Western Washington and has been outscored Last Saturday, Western Washington shutout Whitworth Central fell to 2-3 last Saturday losing at home to Pacific Lutheran after dropping a decision to Linfield a week earlier. Linfield is ranked No. 1 and Pacific Lutheran is ranked No. 2 in this week' s NAIA national poll. Despite its losing record, the Wildcats are still ranked 22nd in the national poll. The 'Cats, who haven't been out of the Top 25 since 1986, are the only team with a losing record in the Top 25. CWU has dominated the series recently, winning 13 straight, including by lopside margins the past two seasons (66-7 and 54-21) and will be heavy favorites. The Pirates rank last in the CFA in total offense (298.8 yards per game) and are next-to-last in total defense (432.4). Still, considering how the season has gone so far this year for the Wildcats, CWU coach Jeff Zenisek is weary of this weekend's opponent. "They've struggled the past two weeks on offense, but their quarterback (J.J. Green) has the potential to put together a big game, if they can give him some pass protection," Zenisek said. Green passed for a CFA season-high 528 yards three weeks ago against Willamette and he threw for 336 in the season opener against Lewis & Clark, but he has been held to less than 100 yards the past two weeks, including just 33 yards against Western Washington. On the season Green has completed 95 of 159 passes for 1,097 yards and 10 touchdowns. His top receivers have been T ony Doughty, who has caught 24 for 353 yards, and Scott Sund, who has 18 catches for 154 yards. Brion Williams is an outstanding running back and has rushed for 303 yards on 78 carries. He's scored two touchdowns. He was a second team CFA all-star last season when he netted 783 yards on 150 rushes. Williams, Doughty (2nd team), tight end Steve Haug (honorable mention) and guard Brian Neely (second team) all earned all-star recognition last year, however linebacker Eric Nasbur g is the only returning all-star on the defensive side of the ball. He earned honorable mention honors. Among this season's defensive stalwarts for the Pirates have been outside linebacker Eric Bird and comerback Casey Clark. Both players have four interceptions. Outside linebacker Jeff Baxter leads the team in tackles with 48 and linebacker Shay Smith has 40. Cody McCanna, who redshirted two years ago at CWU prior to transferring to Whitworth along with his brother Joey, starts at free safety for the Pirates and has 32 tackles, including three for losses. Central ranks in the middle in most of the CF A statistical categories. The Wildcats are seventh in total offense, seventh in rushing, seventh in passing and fifth in scoring in the 12-team conference. In defense, CWU ranks fifth in total defense, third in rushing, 10th in passing and seventh in scoring. Individually, quarterback Jon Kitna is 10th nationally in passing and third in the CF A, averaging yards per game. Running back Tom Craven ranks fourth in rushing with 452 yards. Craven played only briefly in CWU' s loss last Saturday to Pacific Lutheran and is questionable this week. In his absence, Goreal Hudson rushed for 138 yards and had 190 yards all-purpose yards. He was selected the Sub Shop Wildcat-of-the-Week. On the season, Hudson has rushed for 219 yards. Larry Bellinger is CWU's top receiver with 18 catches for 249 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Kentin Alford leads the team in tackles with 38. Defensive end Malik Roberson has 31 tackles, including a CF A-best nine quarterback sacks. Defensive backs Gary Michael (pictured) and Pat Reddick are among the national leaders. Michael is tied for fifth (along with Whitworth's Clark and Bird) in interceptions with four and Reddick ranks second nationally in kickoff returns, averaging 31.9 yards per return. One ofcwu's major problems this fall has been its kicking game. The 'Cats have made just three-of- 13 field goals. Last year, CWU made eight-of-14 and two years ago they made 10of16. Central also ranks just ninth in the conference in net punting, averaging 31.7 yards per game. 13 WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT Five Inducted In Hall Tonight Two All-American football players are among four former Central Washington University athletic greats who will be inducted into CWU' s Athletic Hall-of-Fame tonight. The inductees include John Coen, an All-American quarterback in 1972; Dan Collins, a first team All-American offensive tackle in 1968; Darren Sipe, who was one of CWU' s first place winners in the NAIA national wrestling tournament, and Dick Bedlington, who twice placed in the NAIA national trackand-field meet in the javelin. Also being inducted is Ken Kladnick, a Cle Elum High School graduate, who was a student trainer at CWU and later served as the head trainer at the University of Idaho and Oregon State University. He currently is the head trainer at Eastern Oregon State College. The inductees: John Coen, Football Coen, a graduate of McKinley High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, played quarterback for two seasons at CWU and is generally recognized as the best quarterback in school history. In 1972, he completed 122 of 227 passes for 1,904 yards and 25 touchdowns and was voted the first team NAIA All-American quarterback. In two years at CWU ( ), he threw for 2,808 yards and 31 touchdowns and still ranks as the fourth all-time leading passer in school history. Prior to enrolling at CWU, he played one season at Mesa Junior College in Grand Junction, Colo., and one at Wenatche Valley College. At McKinley High School, Coen was an allstate running back his junior season and played just one game at quarterback. Dan Collins, Football Collins was not only one of the outstanding football players in school history, but he was also one of the outstanding scholar -athletes. He played four seasons at CWU after graduating from Washougal High School in 1966 where he earned all-conference fullback honors in 1966 and also played basketball and baseball and participated in track-and-field. At CWU he twice earned all-conference and All-American honors. He was a first team All-American offensive tackle in 1968 and was an honorable mention selection in Following graduation in 1970 with a degree in physical education and health, he was a recepient of a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate scholarship. He later coached at Mt. Hood Community College and at Idaho State and now is an ssistant principal and athletic director at a junior high school in Pocatello, Idaho. Darrin Sipe, Wrestling Sipe, a 1962 graduate of Mt. Rainier High School where he earned all-state honors in football, wrestled three seasons at Central Washington University and was on CWU' s first wrestling team that placed in the NAIA national meet. He finished fifth at 177 pounds, helping the Wildcats earn a third-place team finish. After earning a degree in education in 1966, he served as an assistant wrestling coach at Issaquah High School for one season and then was the head coach at Newport High School in Bellevue for six seasons. He then moved on to the University of Washington as an assistant coach and was the head coach from 1977 until 1980 when the university dropped the sport. He was named the the Pac-10 Coach-of-the-Year in 1977 and was also selected the Rookie National Coach-of-the-Year the same season. In four seasons, he coached six national place winners. He returned to Newport as an assistant coach in 1985 and was named the head coach in In 13 seasons at Newport, his teams have won 210 dual meets and lost 40. Dick Bedlington, Track-and-Field Bedlington, who graduated from Lynden High School in 1967, still holds CWU' s school record in the javelin with a 1970 toss of 241 feet, 11 inches. He was a four-year letter winner in track-and-field and also competed in football one season at CWU. In 1969, he placed second in the NAIA national meet with a throw of 218 feet, six inches. He placed fourth in 1970 with a throw of 222 feet, eight inches. He was the District I champion in 1971 with a throw of In 1970, he was invited to the Olympic Training Camp. Since 1973, he has owned and operated Dick Bedlington Farms in Lynden, which is one of the Jar gest seed potato growers on the West Coast. Ken Kladnick, Athletic Trainer Kladnick, a native of Ellensburg, is a 1968 graduate of Cle Elum High, where he served as a student trainer for four years. He was also a student trainer at CWU, graduating in 1973 with a BA degree. He earned a master's degree in education from the University of Arizona in Kladnik has been an assistant professor and head athletic trainer at Eastern Oregon State College since Prior to that he was the httad trainer at Oregon State University for eight years. He also previously served as a trainer at the University of Idaho, Whitworth College and Willamette University.
