Sports Office Contacts: ISSUE 16 : 12 September 2014 (Sheldon College Oracle for Optimal Performance in Sport) Telephone (07) Facsimile (07) Wet Weather 1800 SHELDON sport@sheldoncollege.com For updated Sporting information, please visit SHELDON AT THE AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY 2014 Four Sheldon College runners represented the College and Queensland at the Australian Schools Cross Country Championships on August 23 in Albany, Western Australia. Our athletes did themselves and Queensland very proud. We received a total of 4 National medals (3 GOLD, 1 SILVER and 3 BRONZE medal). Well done!! The results were: MAX HOOPER - placed 3rd in the 10 years boys 2km Cross Country event. He had the best run of the season beating all Queenslanders and running down 3rd place in the final 200m. Due to Max s efforts his 10 years Queensland team won the silver medal for the team s points event and then a day later his relay team won the gold medal in the 4 x 1km relay. Maxy posted the fastest relay time of the day across all 10 year olds. A fantastic effort coming away with the full set of National Medals on his first National trip. SHAUN EARP placed 14th (out of 70) in the U16s (14yrs and 15yrs) boys 4km Cross Country race. A great result from Shauny as he is the bottom of this age group. He was the second 14 year old over the line. Due to Shaun s efforts his Queensland team won the gold medal for the team s points event and then a day later his relay team won the gold medal in the 4 x 1.5km relay.
JAMIE HISCOCK - placed 29th (out of 63) in the 13 years girls 3km Cross Country race. An awesome effort as Jamie had a massive fall at the start of the race after colliding with a fellow competitor s spikes. She had to recover and get herself back up after reentering the race in last place, 50m behind the field. Great determination saw Jamie get back through more than half the field and earn a spot in the Queensland number 1 relay team. Jamie s 13 years Queensland team won the bronze medal for the team points event and then a day later her relay team also won bronze. WILL MORRIS - placed 34th (out of 70) in the U16s (14yrs and 15yrs) boys 4km Cross Country race. A great result for Will as he is the bottom of this age group. He was the fifth 14 year old over the line. SHELDON S MET-EAST ATHLETICS RESULTS 2014 Sheldon had 37 athletes competing at the Primary and Secondary Metropolitan East Athletics Championships. They were held at QSAC on September 4 & 5. The athletes again achieved some great results with 35 PBs and 18 Sheldon students qualifying for the State Championships (this is 5 more than last year): A particular highlight was provided by elite triathlete, CHRISTIAN WILSON, who obliterated the Open Boys 5000m record by 32 seconds, beating the 2001 record with a race time of 15m11.01s.
JAMIE HISCOCK (13) - 1st 800m, 1st 1500m and 3rd 400m CHRISTIAN WILSON (18) - 1st 5000m (RECORD ) and 1st 1500m MAX HOOPER (10) - 1st 800m and 2nd 200m DUGALD STRACHAN (15) - 1st 800m and 2nd 1500m JOHN GALLAGHER (17) 1st 2000m Steeple LACHLAN BEVERIDGE (11) - 1st Long Jump SHAUN EARP (14) - 2nd 1500m and 3rd 3000m WILL MORRIS (14) - 2nd 2000m Steeple DANIEL CAMPBELL (16) - 2nd 2000m Steeple TOM MACBETH (13) - 2nd 400m EMILY MACBETH (10) - 2nd Long Jump AIDAN FULLER (16) - 3rd 3000m and 4th 1500m JOANNE MILLER (16) - 3rd 3000m and 4th 1500m LACHLAN MCBAIN (11) - 3rd 100m HAYLEY PARTRIDGE (13) - 3rd 800m and 4th 1500m ELLIE-ANN GREEN (13) - 4th 400m JOSH YATES (15) - 7th 400m CHLOE TREURNICH (14) paper nomination 3000m Walk To qualify for the State Championships the secondary athletes had to win or attain the state qualifying time while the primary athletes had to place in the top three. We wish these athletes all the best in the upcoming Queensland Championships to be held at QSAC in Brisbane towards the end of October. SPORTY STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS The following sporting achievements have been reported to us by parents JEAN-LUC FULLER was first placed Under 14 (out of 562) in last Sunday s Bridge to Brisbane 5km race. His time of 17:59 meant he averaged 3:35km for the race and finished 40th out of all competitors - there were over 7000 finishers! This was all the more impressive as Jean-Luc will still be in this age group next year! Jean-Luc's brother Aidan had an awesome race too, finishing in 25th place overall with a time of 16:42. Both have been training hard with Mr Chris Lang via the Sheldon Triathlon Academy and are absolutely primed for the exciting Triathlon season ahead. SWIMMING NEWS Congratulations to THOMAS D ARCY on his selection into the Brisbane team that will be competing at the upcoming Patron Shield championships. The Patron Shield is an inter-regional swimming championship between the best swimmers aged 9-13 years from the Gold Coast, Wide Bay, Darling Downs and Brisbane regions.
Thomas was selected from his performances from the recent Queensland Short Course Championships. Congratulation Thomas Congratulations to our three senior swimmers; MELA GILLARD, THOMAS D ARCY AND DALEY SMELTZER who competed at the Queensland Short Course Championships over the weekend. We had some great results from the weekend with the swimmers setting 12 new Personal Best times out of 15 swims. Thomas won 2 silver medals in the 50 and 200 Freestyle, and a bronze in the 100 Freestyle. Mela set 5 new PB s and had 4 swims ranked in the top 10 overall, and her 50 freestyle performance ranked her in the top 4. Daley set 3 new PB s and was ranked in the top 10 for the 200 Breaststroke. Congratulation swimmers on your fantastic results BASKETBALL MATCH REPORTS U11 Boys Navy 21 v Eagles 61 The U11 Boys Metro semi-final was 3rd placed Sheldon Navy against 2nd placed Eagles. It was a fairly even start to the game with Eagles being up 6 pts to 4 after about 5 minutes. The Sheldon boys of Ambrus Major, Lachlan Kelly, Liam Forbes, Keagan Forbes, Lachlan Andrews, Hayden McKillop and Cooper Jones were having a good defensive start to the game. The Eagles machine kicked in and they started to make a break in the score line with Eagles shooting 2 three pointers only to have Lachlan Kelly shoot a 3 pointer for Sheldon. The half time score had Sheldon with 11 points trailing Eagles 31. The Sheldon boys moved the ball around well, but were out gunned by Eagles who continued their dominant play and finished comfortable winners. Finishing third on the ladder and making the semi-final in the competitive Southern Districts Metro competition was a great achievement for the boys. They have improved throughout the season and they should be happy with their skills and achievements from the championship season. U13 Boys AR Navy v Carina Taipans 23 Despite having only four of our normal players this week, the boys did well to score another decisive win! Player of the Week went to Miguel Costa Teixeira (6 points) for a high-energy game with some great breaks and rebounds. The Coach s Encouragement Award went to Mini - Cooper Jones (9 points), who, along with Brodie Blaser, helped out by standing in brilliantly for our absent players. Top scorer Zander Zwolsman (20 points) made repeated fast breaks, Ben McCloskey (11 points) was relentless in his defence, while Peter Swan made some breaks and intercepts of his own. Great teamwork, boys! U13 Boys AR Navy 21 v Jets Fires 31 A big disappointment for the boys this week in their first semi-final. After appearing to have the game sewn up following a great first half, the opposition dominated play in the final 15 minutes to edge us out. Player of the Week went to top scorer Ben McCloskey (11 points) for
his usual high-energy game. The Coach s Encouragement Award went to Zander Zwolsman (4 points) for his relentless defence. Peter Swan took a couple of great rebounds, while Nick Beard (4 points) made some brilliant passes. Miguel Costa Teixeira (2 points) and Balin Howlett made some valuable breaks, Cameron Shaw was strong in defence, and both Connor Roddy and Slade Hoare demonstrated their skill with some fine passing. Great effort, boys! Thanks for an excellent season. U15 Girls Navy 28 v Carina Cobras 26 The Sheldon girls finished in second place on the ladder and were worthy semi-finalists. Our opponents were the must-improved Carina Cobras, who under the direction of coach, Nigel Stainer, have become a very well-drilled team. Sheldon played the Cobras in the final week of the league and lost by a single point. So the girls had a point to prove and a big hurdle to overcome before advancing to the final. As suspected, the game was extremely close with the teams trading baskets for baskets. Both teams were creating opportunities and it came down to which team was putting up the best defence. All the girls played well and they kept up the pressure until the final whistle. In the panic of the final seconds, the girls held their nerve, held possession and denied the Cobras any reply. Grand Final here we come. Anything is possible on finals day! Congratulations to Sarah Peterson, Azeb Feilding, Rachel Evans, Hayley Lehmann, Jamie Hiscock, Chelsea Anthony and Mela Gillard. SOCCER MATCH REPORTS U12 2 v Toowong 3 U12 3 v Jimboomba 0 Happy father's day to all the dads! What a great win by the Under 12s against Jimboomba. Player of the Week was awarded to Ethan Mowbray and goal scorers were Ethan, Ben Dixon and George Slade. All players contributed to a fine victory with special mention to the two Ethans, Mowbray and Stafford, also Ben Dixon. Great effort gentlemen! TOUCH FOOTBALL MATCH REPORTS U8 Lions 6 v ANZ Taipans 4 What a win! Sheldon Lions displayed a stunning performance against the ANZ Taipans with a 6 4 victory! Player of the Week, Brody Gray scored two tries with blistering pace, Jaxon Ford also scored two tries with Mia Peupelmann and Zali Campbell scoring one a piece. It was another great display of teamwork and determination resulting with a move from 9th up to 5th on the leader board stay tuned as we keep climbing! Well done Lions. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Basketball U13 Boys AR Navy U15 Boys AR White Soccer Under 12 Touch Football U8 Lions Miguel Costa Teixeira, Ben McCloskey Stephen Margetts, Ned Claffey, Stephen Margetts Liam Henry, Ethan Mowbray Brody Gray
