3 BOB QUINN Executive Vice President and General Manager Years with Lions: Years in NFL: 7 QUINN MAKES HIS MARK Bob Quinn, hired January, 6 as executive vice president and general manager, oversees the entire Lions football operations and reports directly to Owner and Chairman of the Board Martha Firestone Ford. ¾ Since joining the Lions, Quinn, who spent the previous 6 seasons with the New England Patriots, has begun building the football foundation which he believes will provide the team with the optimum chance for success. During his introductory press conference, he quickly set forth his vision. ¾ Among the numerous free agents acquired by Quinn this offseason was WR Marvin Jones, considered by many to be the top free agent wide receiver on the market. Additionally, Quinn also retained key Lions free agents, including DT Haloti Ngata and LB Tahir Whitehead. ¾ His initial draft class featured the selection of the most linemen (offense and defense) in a Lions draft since 989, highlighted by the team s first three picks (T Taylor Decker, DT A Shawn Robinson and C Graham Glasgow). PATRIOTS PAST During his time with New England, Quinn served a number of roles in the player personnel department, including most recently as Director of Pro Scouting from -. While he worked as Director of Pro Scouting, the Patriots won the 4 Super Bowl and four-straight AFC East Division championships. ¾ From 9-, Quinn was the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel. For the previous nine years, Quinn worked in several different capacities within the Patriots player personnel department, including roles in college scouting as a National Scout and Regional Scout. He played an integral role in evaluating and procuring talent for the team through the NFL draft process, free agency, trades, etc. ¾ While working for the New England Patriots, he helped contribute to one of the most impressive stretches in NFL history, one that produced four Super Bowl titles, including the most recent championship in 4 (Super Bowl XLIX). Since, Quinn s first year with New England, the Patriots have won six AFC Championships, 3 AFC East titles, + games in a season times (which includes the past six years) and + games in 4 of his 6 seasons. ¾ As Director of Pro Scouting, Quinn utilized all possible methods to seek the Patriots next player. This approach had a tremendous impact on the Patriots Super Bowl XLIX championship as seven players, who were acquired (including two via trades) after the start of the regular season, all played in the Super Bowl. ¾ Another key player during the Super Bowl XLIX Championship run, CB Malcolm Butler, signed with the club after a rookie minicamp tryout. Butler, who sealed the Super Bowl victory with a goal line interception, would join All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis in the New England secondary. NEW LIONS LEADER ¾ Prior to serving as Director of Pro Scouting, Quinn was the Patriots assistant director of pro personnel. 5 QUOTE THE LIONS The following are post-game quotes from the Lions' Week 7 game vs. Green Bay (//7). LIONS HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL On what adjustments need to be made going forward to improve second-half scoring: We ve just got to get better, there s no magic to it. If we play the second half like we ve been playing the first half we ll be fine. If we can play the first half that way, we can play the second half that way. We haven t done it just because of execution more so than anything else. On last night's game having a playoff atmosphere and what the team can take from that experience: Yeah, you know, I think that every opportunity that you have is a learning opportunity, particularly with as many young guys as we have out there. There s always a lot of teaching to be done for a number of different examples. We ll take the positive things and we ll work on those, look at them and try to improve upon our negatives. Like I said, our focus is going to be more so on our opponent coming up than necessarily what s behind us. Season is over with, regular season is done. It was a regular season, our guys earned the right to be right where they are today. Might not have been pretty, but we re here. It s our job to take advantage of it. On if he still feels the team is right where it needs to be: All I can tell you is, number one, it s very difficult to get into the playoffs. Number two, there s only teams working tomorrow morning and we re one of those. If you re in, you ve got a chance. Obviously we ll have a chance to get better, the things we need to still work on we can improve upon. Excited about our opportunity, that s for certain. On the mood of the locker room after making the playoffs despite losing to Green Bay: I don t think - Obviously guys don t like to lose, they re competitors. But the fact of the matter is though that we have an opportunity. When you look at the alternative, this is, times better than that. Guys have got to shake it off a little bit and go to work on Tuesday. On how he will pick the team back up heading into the matchup with Seattle: It s not going to be hard because I tell them, It s a new season. The only thing they have to do is once they get through with you guys today, that s it. That s all we re going to talk about that particular ball game. Not going to talk about it anymore, it s over, it s a new season. We re talking about Seattle, very tough team to play out there. We ve got to get ready to go. You can t linger on this stuff. On what he thought of the offensive line s performance given the injuries to C Travis Swanson and T Riley Reiff: I haven t looked at the film yet, but we had a lot of guys that were kind of, you know, Riley (Reiff) wasn t in. So we had a few guys move around as well as our secondary. That s what football is, you know. You just never know once the whistle blows exactly what s going to happen, so you have to be able to adjust. You adjust, you fight, you scratch and try to find a way to win. On RB Zach Zenner s improvement from the first half of the season to the second half of the season: You know, I m really not certain. He is one of those guys that I think just, he s very smart, very cerebral and always finds a way to try to work to get better. He has a good sense of self. He knows what s best for him, in terms of how he runs. He finds seams and, you know, he s a tough, hardnosed guy that s active. I mean what d he gain, 3, yards a year in college or something like that? Something ridiculous like that,,? I mean, that doesn t just happen, you know. The guy has some ability. On how the team will defend the mobility of Seahawks QB Russell Wilson next week after struggling against Rodgers: Better work on our sprinting technique a little bit, keep him contained a little bit better. Here s one of the things you have to understand, they do that to everybody. You just have to get them down enough times. We just didn t get him down enough times. You re not going to completely stop Russell Wilson. No one has at this point throughout his career. So you ve just got to get him down enough times to be able to stall the drives and be able to answer with points. That s the real key. LIONS QB MATTHEW STAFFORD On the mood in the locker room after the loss despite also qualifying for a Wild Card spot: Yeah, obviously just didn t play well enough to get the win tonight. Everybody sees that and understands that, but excited about what s ahead, you know. We got in, we re one of teams that earned a spot in this thing and it s a brand new season. On if this season feels differently compared to the and 4 playoff runs: Yeah, you ve just got to reset. It s a new season. You know, teams at every spot in the playoff ranking have won this thing, so we ve just got to go in there, look at the film, get a little bit better and get ready for next week. 6 On the team s recent struggles in the second half: Just got to do a better job of putting points on the board, you know. For one reason or another, we re not executing as well. We ve just got to go out there and execute a little bit better. On missed opportunities against Green Bay, such as the incompletion to WR Golden Tate: Yeah, man, that one was close. It was close to being really good. But yeah, gonna hit some, gonna miss some. It s a good defense, guys are sticky in coverage, but made some plays. LIONS LB DEANDRE LEVY On what went wrong against the Packers: I don t know, I don t think we stepped up to the moment in that second half. We just didn t make enough plays, we didn t stop them enough. We had too many breakdowns defensively. They schemed up a couple good things, but we still have to trust our rules and make those plays that we need to make. On why the team fell short on the big stage: Yeah, I mean, I don t know. It was just, second half we were flat. You know, we have to come out and not let that initial kind of rush of energy You know, the first half we started out, we came out and had good energy. We kind of let that carry us a little bit. In the second half we just came out flat and we never really recovered. They came out and made some plays and we didn t do a good enough job responding. LIONS RB ZACH ZENNER On why he wasn t able to duplicate the success he had in the first half: You know, again, I think it comes down to us as an offense executing our jobs and doing what we need to do to move the ball down the field. On not having the ball for much of the third quarter: Credit to their offense and that team. I mean two of their drives, you know, the third quarter and then that one throughout the fourth. I mean great job by them keeping the ball away from us. On the mixed emotions in the locker room after the game: They re not mixed. This is disappointing. I m personally disappointed and I m sure as a team we re all disappointed that we didn t get this done. But tomorrow, they also won t be mixed. We ve got to move on, we ve got to get ready for the next game. But tonight, we ll be disappointed, for sure. LIONS LB TAHIR WHITEHEAD On the team clinching a playoff berth: We re in. No matter how ugly it was, we re in. And at this point the record is erased, it doesn t matter. It s a new season. Now it s win or go home and we ve just got to go out there and get it done now. No matter how we were able to get in, the only thing that matters is we re in. On how the team regains momentum after losing three games in a row: It doesn t matter. I think we have a really good team. We re able to just refocus, be able to go out there and just be able to make whatever corrections that need to be made and go out there and play football. At the end of the day that s all it really boils down to. You know, you need to go out there and take it one play at a time, one series, one drive at a time and go out there and just keep fighting, keep battling. LIONS WR GOLDEN TATE On bouncing back after the Green Bay loss: You know, we wanted to win this one. We re competitors. It hurts to take an L, especially at home against especially the Packers, but on the flip side we ve got to have a shortterm memory. We re in the playoffs. It s a new season. We have a chance to do something special still and we ve just got to focus in and get ready for Saturday. On if he is happy to make the playoffs despite the loss: Yeah, we want to get in (the playoffs) any way we can get in and we re in. On knowing the team is on a three-game losing streak heading into the playoffs: No, I think we do a good job of having a short-term memory. We ve had a heck of a season to earn our way into the playoffs and that s all that matters.
