3 Introduction What is an Equivalent (EQ) Drywall Stud? Gauge equivalent drywall framing must meet the minimum performance requirements of conventional drywall framing. ASTM and AISI define conventional drywall framing studs as basic C-shaped members. These basic members do not take advantage of today s roll-forming and steel making technologies that enhance the shape and strength with greater efficiency. ProSTUD employs these technologies and exceeds the performance of conventional drywall framing. When comparing drywall framing systems it is important to keep in mind Life Safety, System Performance, and Connections. For interior drywall framing members, bending strength is the criteria most important to the strength of a wall or ceiling. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) defines bending or flexural strength by Moment. The corresponding chart compares the bending strength of ProSTUD and conventional drywall studs. 4 Introduction Connections In addition to sufficient member strength, it is important to know how connections will perform. Connections are critical to the capacity and safety of an assembly, and they are also important for attachments of cabinets, shelving, handrails, and other accessories to the steel framing. The tables below compare the screw performance of ProSTUD to conventional drywall framing. This performance relationship to conventional studs can be applied to a variety of fasteners and connections. #6 Screw Pullout Values #6 Screw Shear (Bearing) Values Pullout (lbs) Pro Ga. 51 Pro Ga. 59 Pro 20 DW ProSTUD Drywall Framing Conventional Drywall Framing Ga. 6 Slip Connections Deep Leg Deflection Track Systems: Head-of-wall vertical deep leg deflection track systems are designed to allow the top of the wall stud to float within the top track legs. This allows for vertical live load movement of the primary structure without transferring axial loads to the interior drywall studs. A gap (determined by the Architect or Engineer of Record) is required between the top of the wall stud and the deflection track. ProSTUD Drywall Framing studs can be used with three Deep Leg Track Systems: ProTRAK Deep Leg Track ProTRAK deep leg track is available with leg lengths of 2", 2-1/2" and 3". Standard thicknesses available are: ProTRAK 25 and ProTRAK 20 DW. Non-Standard thicknesses are: ProTRAK 22, ProTRAK 20 STR, ProTRAK 30 MIL & ProTRAK 33 MIL. The wall studs are not fastened to the deflection track and a row of lateral bracing is required within 12" of the deep leg track to prevent rotation and lateral movement of the studs. The deflection track system must be designed for the end reaction of the wall studs (point loads) and for the specific gap required for vertical deflection. ProTRAK Deep Leg Track Lateral Loads and Wall Heights Deflection Track System Structural Deep Leg Track (18ga. & 16ga.) 13 Composite Table Information Not all limiting heights tables are created equally. In fact, as building codes have continued to evolve, the criteria and test procedures that are used to create limiting height data have changed dramatically. These changes have a very significant impact on the limiting height capacity of any specific stud. For example, ICC Evaluation Service Acceptance Criteria AC86-95 (released in 1995) in conjunction with the applicable codes in effect at that time allowed for a 0.75 load reduction in the formula used to calculate the limiting height of a stud. The most recent version of the code, AC86-10, in addition to eliminating the load reduction, also calls for a qualification of the gypsum board used in composite tests, and defines very specific and significantly more stringent testing and analysis procedures. Because of these changes, the limiting height capacity of a stud varies dramatically depending on the version of the standard used. In some cases these variances can be in the magnitude of several feet! Some manufacturers ignore these significant factors when creating and publishing limiting height data, or they fail to notate which ICC-ES version was used to create their tables, or they simply choose the standard that provides the greatest possible limiting height. When this is the case, it is very important for building professionals to compare tables that were created under the same rules and to make sure the data they are using matches the requirements of the code in effect in the jurisdiction where they are building. 12
14 Composite Table Information Which ProSTUD limiting heights table should I use? ProSTUD, like any interior drywall stud, may be used in a variety of applications including walls, ceilings, and soffits. While some conditions may require the expertise of a design professional, many assemblies can be selected based on tabulated data. Using the diagrams below, locate the required assembly and follow the instructions for selecting the proper ProSTUD member. Composite Assemblies Composite limiting height data can be applied to walls where gypsum board is installed on both flanges of the stud for the full height of the wall. ProSTUD composite data is based on the 2003, 2006, and 2009 International Building and was tested and analyzed in accordance with the most recent version of AC86 (2010). ProSTUD was tested with both 1/2" and 5/8" generic gypsum board that applies to all brands and types of wallboard. In addition, ProSTUD was tested with proprietary 5/8" Type X Gypsum board to provide data for a higher level of performance where applicable. Composite limiting height tables for standard ProSTUD members are available in this catalog. A comprehensive offering is available at Non-Composite Assemblies Composite Gypsum Board full height on both sides Non-composite conditions are common in all structures. When the gypsum board stops at the ceiling level, but the stud continues to the deck, it is a non-composite condition. While there may be advantages to contacting Technical Services or a Professional, many conditions can be covered by limiting heights tables shown in this catalog. When in doubt, call our complimentary Technical Services Hotline at < Lu < Lu < Lu 48"o.c. max. Chase Walls or Furred Walls Chase & furred walls are common, but the conditions vary greatly depending on the building requirements. American Gypsum, CertainTeed, Lafarge, Temple-Inland and USG composite limiting heights are calculated using ICC-ES AC In accordance with current building codes and AISI design standards, the 1/3 Stress Increase for strength was not used. The composite limiting heights provided in the tables are based on a single layer of gypsum board complying with ASTM C1396. The gypsum board must be applied full height in the vertical orientation to each stud flange and installed using minimum No. 6 Type S Drywall screws spaced a maximum of 12-in on-center to the framing members in accordance with ASTM C No fasteners are required for attaching the stud to the track except as detailed in ASTM C Stud end bearing must be a minimum of 1 inch. f adjacent to the height value indicates that flexural stress controls the allowable wall height. s adjacent to the height value indicates that shear/end reaction controls the allowable wall height. 14

26 High Performance Boards ProSTUD with High-Impact & High-Abuse Boards Projects such as schools, hospitals, and healthcare facilities where beds and carts might be pushed into walls; as well as heavily trafficked areas such as stairwells require the use of impact/abuse board products. These wall products are designed to take more impact and abuse than traditional gypsum wallboard without showing damage. Because of these additional requirements, it is important that the stud products supporting these board products meet the manufacturer s stringent requirements. The following Drywall Manufacturers conducted their own internal tests using ProSTUD Drywall Framing s with their High-Impact, Abuse and Tile Backer boards. Dietrich s nonstructural and cold-formed metal framing products and accessories contribute toward LEED credits in the following areas: Materials and Resources Credit 4.1 and 4.2 Recycled Content: Dietrich products are manufactured from steel coil that contains on average a higher percentage of recycled steel than the industry minimum. Materials and Resources Credit 5.1 and 5.2 Regional Materials: Dietrich s manufacturing facilities are located in close proximity to many of the industry material sources which greatly reduces the environmental impact of transportation to the project site. Project specific submittal documentation can be provided for these credits through the website at 25
