22 Photo by Robert Beck GONZAGA BASKETBALL Youth Movement Carries Bulldogs To Another NCAA Appearance In a year many thought Gonzaga would be ripe for a slip from the top of the West Coast Conference, the Bulldogs youth carried the team to yet another NCAA Tournament run. With only one senior starter returning, Gonzaga head coach Mark Few put together a team that finished 26-5 with a No. 10 national ranking and fifth straight WCC championship. Conference MVP s For the fifth straight year a Gonzaga player was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year. Senior Ronny Turiaf was named the award winner after 15.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Turiaf helped lead Gonzaga to a 12-2 WCC record as he finished his career fourth at Gonzaga in both career points and rebounds. Conference Honors Sweep For the second time Gonzaga swept all four West Coast Conference awards as the Bulldogs won their fifth straight WCC regular-season title. Mark Few was named the Coach of the Year for the fifth straight year while Ronny Turiaf was named the WCC Player of the Year, giving the Bulldogs the last five winners. J.P. Batista was named the Newcomer of the Year and Erroll Knight was voted the Defender of the Year. Gonzaga last swept the awards in 2001 when Casey Calvary was named the Player of the Year, Dan Dickau named Newcomer of the Year and Mark Spink named Defender of the Year. J.P. The Bulldogs climbed to 10th after winning the WCC Tournament championship. Double All-Americans For the second straight season Gonzaga placed two players on the Associated Press All-American list as senior Ronny Turiaf and sophomore Adam Morrison were both selected as honorable mention honorees. It was the second straight All-American nod for Turiaf and the first for Morrison. In 2004 Blake Stepp joined Turiaf on the AP All-American list to give the Bulldogs their first multiple All-America winners. Gonzaga played to sell out crowds all season with 6,000 fans jamming into the new arena for every game. Knocking Off No. 3 In the span of 10 days around Christmas, Gonzaga knocked off a pair of No. 3 teams that had both advanced to the NCAA Final Four in GU opened the run with a win over previously unbeaten Georgia Tech at the Las Vegas Showdown. They followed that up by handing Oklahoma State their first setback of the season at the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City. It marked the second straight year that Gonzaga has beaten a team ranked No. 3 after the Bulldogs picked off Missouri in 2004 at the Battle in Seattle. 41 Straight Sophomore guard Derek Raivio tied a school record when he made 41 straight free throws. Raivio started the streak against Oklahoma State and ended it against Santa Clara at home on Feb. 5 Another Top Seed For the second straight year Gonzaga earned a high seed in the NCAA Tournament as the Bulldogs were rewarded with a No. 3 seed after completing a 26-5 regular-season. In 2004 Gonzaga earned a No. 2 seed, the best by any school in West Coast Conference history. Ronny Drops 40 Senior Ronny Turiaf became the latest Gonzaga player to score 40 or more points in a game when he torched Idaho for 40 points in the third game played at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Turiaf was 13-for-18 from the floor and 14-for-15 from the free throw line as he became the 14th Bulldogs to accomplish that feat. Free Throw King In addition to climbing to No. 4 in both career points and rebounds, senior Ronny Turiaf shattered a 44-year old record as he became Gonzaga s career free throw leader with 643. Turiaf surpassed Frank Burgess mark of GONZAGA YEAR IN REVIEW
