In addition, 17 former D-Leaguers have started at least one game during the NBA season. Every referee hired by the NBA since 2002 has worked in the D-League, while coaches, athletic trainers and front office executives are also being developed. Almost 150 players, coaches, referees, athletic trainers and front-office personnel have moved to NBA teams or the league office since November Due to the NBA s most recent collective bargaining agreement, the D-League plays an expanded role for the NBA, with affiliations between D-League and NBA teams. Des Moines, Iowa (announced Feb. 27, 2007); the team will play at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Fort Wayne, Indiana (announced April 10, 2007); the team will play at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Rosters can expand to 12 if NBA players are on assignment. Teams play a 50-game regular season schedule beginning in late November and ending mid April. The D-League conducts a league-wide Draft in early November. To be eligible for the draft a player must have signed a D-League Standard Player Contract. Each team holds a training camp in mid November. In order to participate in team training camp, a player must have been a member of the team during the previous season, been drafted by the team during the D-League Draft, been allocated to the team by the league or been selected to attend camp from a local team tryout. PLAYERS Players sign a contract with the league and not with teams. The Standard Player Contract obligates players for one season. Teams are required to have at least two first-year professionals on the roster at all times. Teams do not have injured reserve lists. THE COMMUNITY The D-League and its teams participate in D-League Cares, executing almost 300 reading-related programs and activities last season, including Welcome Back to School 3

4 Events, Read to Achieve Day and monthly Reading Timeouts. About 1,500 books were distributed. The D-League High School Sportsmanship Program honors a high school basketball team as sportsmanship winners on or around March 5, which is National Sportsmanship Day. The Student Achiever program runs throughout the school year and rewards students for various achievements such as perfect attendance, straight A s or improving in academic areas and is highlighted at games. NBA TV Approximately 60 games aired on NBA TV in , up from 35 in NBA TV also airs a bi-weekly highlight and features show throughout the season. Five half-hour segments on ESPN2 aired beginning in mid-february, giving viewers an all-access look at life inside the NBA s minor league. 4

5 NBA D-LEAGUE PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS Player Development Orientation Introduces players to topics that will assist them in their transition into the D-League. Special emphasis is placed on topics such as the Business of Basketball, player development programs, basketball operations, public relations, media training, marketing partners, community relations and cultural adjustment issues. Team Awareness Meetings Team Awareness Meetings (TAM) promote the development of personal and professional skills deemed necessary for basketball and life success on topics such as: Nutrition, Money Management, Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Sexual Health/Sexual Harassment Career Planning, High Risk Situations, NBA Scout Feedback Panel and Motivation. Over 120 D-League and NBA Assigned players receive seminars on two topics per month during the season for a total of 16 hours of off the court professional development training. Continuing Education and Life Skills Programs Assist players in completing their college degrees and assist them in returning to school, including offering online business communication and life skills certificate learning programs from Michigan State University. For the season over 25 % of D-League players were involved in continuing education program initiatives. D-League Call ups Jared Reiner formerly of the Sioux Skyforce and now with Milwaukee Bucks and Louis Amundson formerly with the Colorado 14ers and now with the Utah Jazz both participated in the MSU Communications Skills online certificate program. Career Education Program Provide career counseling resources and skills development opportunities in areas such as career coaching sessions, career assessments, resume writing, interviewing skills and job search strategies. Summer Apprenticeship Program This program allows the player to earn a salary and valuable on the job experience with a local sponsor in the field of their choice during the off-season. The program gives D-League teams the opportunity to continue marketing their brand during the off-season by having a player conduct various community relations appearances. Anthony Terrell of the Fort Worth Flyers interned at a law office in Fort Worth in the summer of 2006 and made multiple community relations appearances for the team over the summer. Mentoring Program The mentor program matches a high potential player with a retired NBA player or a successful local business man who have successfully accomplished what this player is seeking to achieve in sport or life. 5

6 The mentor assists the player mentee in acquiring valuable basketball and career related information in an effort to prepare the mentee for the challenges of the NBA or the business world. Former NBA players who served as mentors for the 2007 season are AC Green, Sean Rooks, Lee Mayberry, John Coker and Elliot Perry to name a few. 6

7 NBA D-LEAGUE ALL-STAR 2007 Sidney Moncrief of the Fort Worth Flyers and Joe Wolf of the Colorado 14ers served as head coaches for the Gillette D-League All-Star Game in association with 24 Hour Fitness, which was held at NBA All-Star Jam Session at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Feb. 17. The Eastern Division defeated the Western Division , with Eastern Conference All-Star and Fort Worth Flyers forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu taking home MVP honors following a 30-point, seven-rebound performance.
