Tennessee got on the board in the second quarter when Justin hunter hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Zach Mettenberger to make the score The Eagles and Titans would trade off on the next four scores. First, Philadelphia added another Parkey field goal (26) that was countered by Tennessee with a two-yard touchdown run by Shonn Greene. Next, the Eagles scored on a two-yard touchdown run by LeSean McCoy that was followed up by a 20-yard Ryan Succop field goal by the Titans to create a Eagles advantage at halftime. Philadelphia pushed its lead up to in the third quarter when Mark Sanchez found James Casey for a 14-yard passing touchdown. In the fourth quarter the Eagles continued their scoring ways with two more Parkey field goals (35, 30) to bring the score to Tennessee scored once more on a six-yard passing touchdown by Mettenberger-to-Dexter McCluster that made the score 40-24, but another Parkey field goal (50) provided the final for Philadelphia DALLAS LAST GAME Coming off of their bye week, the Dallas Cowboys entered Sunday s contest with the Giants looking to equal last season s win total of eight games and keep pace in the NFC playoff race. The Giants offense was coming off a poor performance the previous week and looked like it had something to prove against Dallas as they came out firing on all cylinders with a 13-play, 80-yard touchdown drive on their first posession of the game, converting four-of-four third downs in the process. The touchdown came on a three-yard pass from Eli Manning to odell Beckham Jr. Dallas answered the drive with a 38-yard Dan Bailey field goal, but then Beckham struck again with a one-handed, 43-yard touchdown reception that gave the Giants a 14-2 lead. The Cowboys again answered with a methodical drive down the field, culminating in a four-yard Jason Witten shovel pass from Tony Romo. The Dallas defense could not stop the Giants however, and the GIants drove down the field again and put the ball in the end zone for their third first half touchdown when Andre Williams punched the ball across the goal line. After the Giants went seven-of-eight on third downs in the first half, the Cowboys defense came out strong and pitched a shut out in the third quarter while earning a red zone takeaway when Barry Church intercepted Manning and returned it 45 yards to midfield. The interception was the 23rd Manning has thrown against the Cowboys in his career, the most of any team, and it proved costly as Romo connected with Cole Beasley on a 45-yard catch-andrun for a touchdown. Dallas followed up that score with a Dez Bryant 31-yard touchdown catch to give them the lead for the first time in the game. New york re-took the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Tony Romo manufactured one of his patented fourth quarter comebacks, hitting Dez Bryant with a 13-yard strike in the back of the end zone for the game-winning score. The win was Romo s 23rd career fourth quarter comeback victory and it put Dallas in a tie for first place in the NFC East. FIRST TIME...LAST TIME The first time these two clubs met, the Cowboys were just two weeks old, and Dallas was unable to claim its first win of the season, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in front of 18,500 fans at the Cotton Bowl on Sept. 30, The last time these two clubs met, Dallas hosted Philadelphia at AT&T Stadium on Dec. 29, 2013 to decide the winner of the NFC East and a spot in the 2013 playoffs. 21 MR. SEPTEMBER DeMarco Murray was named the NFC offensive of the Month for September after leading the league after a torrid start to the season. It was the first time a Dallas Cowboy has been named NFC of the Month since Tony Romo took home the award in November of he was also twice named FedEx Ground NFL of the Week - Week 2 and Week 4. During the first month of the season, he rushed for an NFL-leading 534 yards and five touchdowns on 99 carries, an average of 5.4 yards-per-carry, which ranked second in the NFL amongst players with at least 50 carries (Justin Forsett, 5.5). Murray rushed for at least 100 yards and one touchdown in each of the Cowboys first four games, making him only the second Cowboy and fourth player in NFL history to accomplish such a feat, joining Jim Brown (1958), o.j. Simpson (1975) and Emmitt Smith. Murray also racked up 30 rushing first downs and 17 rushes of 10+ yards, both of which led the NFL. Additionally, his rushing totals of 167 yards against Tennessee (9/14) and 149 yards against New orleans (9/28) were the third and fourth-highest single-game totals of his career. Murray also caught nine passes for 68 yards to combine with his rushing yards to lead the league in the first month with 602 scrimmage yards. MR. OCTOBER For the second consecutive month, DeMarco Murray earned NFC offensive of the Month honors. he joins Barry Sanders (1997) and Emmitt Smith (1992) as the only running backs to win consecutive NFC offensive of the Month Awards in one season. For the month of october, Murray added to his streak of 100- yard games, closing the second month of the season as he did the first, with four straight 100-yard outings to make him the first player in NFL history to open a season with eight consecutive 100- yard outings. Through october, he rushed for 520 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 107 carries (4.9 avg. ) to give him 1,054 yards and seven scores in eight games to become the fastest player in team history - tied for fifth in NFL history - to reach 1,000 yards in a season. For the season to date, Murray individually out rushed 29 entire teams, and through october alone, he has more rushing yards than one NFL team has through eight games. In october, Murray's 107 carries were 24 more than the second place rusher (Arian Foster, 83) while his 520 yards in the month also led the league and is 207 yards greater than his closest competition in the NFC (LeSean McCoy, 313). Murray has put together the most prolific second month of the season in franchise history. his 520 yards beats out Emmitt Smith's (second place) 504 yards and Tony Dorsett's 460 yards (in five games). In addition to his rushing accomplishments, Murray hauled in the second-most receptions (17) and fourth-most receiving yards (171) on the team. Collectively, his 691 yards from scrimmage led the league through october. FIRST DOWN MURRAY DeMarco Murray rushed the ball 29 times at Tennessee (9/14), accumulating 167 yards, a touchdown and 10 first downs - the most rushing first downs in a single game in his career. 22 TAKE IT AWAY The Dallas Cowboys recorded their first two takeaways of the season at Tennessee (9/14), as both Barry Church and Rolando McClain intercepted Titans passer Jake Locker. Church s interception in the second quarter marked the first takeaway of the year, and the second of his career. McClain made an acrobatic snag of Locker s pass in the fourth quarter to register as the second of his career. The Cowboys added a season-high three takeaways at St. Louis (9/21) behind a henry Melton fumble recovery and interceptions by Bruce Carter and Morris Claiborne - both in the fourth quarter to help clinch the win. The defense forced three more turnovers against New orleans (9/28), with Justin Durant collecting an interception of Drew Brees while J.J. Wilcox picked up his first career fumble recovery and Sterling Moore added one as well. The Cowboys had one takeaway against houston (10/5) on an orlando Scandrick interception of Ryan Fitzpatrick. At Seattle (10/12), Rolando McClain picked off Russell Wilson s fourth quarter pass to preserve the win. Against the N.y. Giants (10/19), both Durant and Melton each had a fumble recovery. J.J. Wilcox recorded his first career interception against Washington (10/27). Against Arizona (11/2), Tyler Patmon intercepted his first career pass and returned it 58 yards for his first career touchdown to mark the fifth-longest interception return for a touchdown by a rookie in team history. The defense added three takeaways across the pond with its matchup against the Jaguars (11/9) as Carter picked off his second pass of the season and both Church and C.J. Spillman each had a fumble recovery. Church picked off Eli Manning at the N.y. Giants (11/23) to mark his second of the season and third of his career. The Cowboys defense finished the 2013 season with 28 takeaways, fifth for the club since The 2014 squad has 18 - tied for 12th in the league: Dallas Cowboys Year-by-Year Takeaways (since 2005) SACK ATTACK From Dallas racked up at least 35 sacks each season, but fell short in 2012, posting 34. The 2013 team finished with 34 once again, and since the 2006 season, Dallas has totaled 344 sacks - fifth in the league over that span: NFL Team Sack Leaders - since 2006 Team Sacks Philadelphia Eagles Minnesota Vikings Miami Dolphins Pittsburgh Steelers Dallas Cowboys In 2014, the Dallas defense produced one sack against San Francisco (9/7) with Bruce Carter s takedown of Colin Kaepernick. The defense had two at Tennessee (9/14) as Rolando McClain gathered one and henry Melton and Kyle Wilber split the other sack of Jake Locker. Dallas had two sacks against New orleans (9/28), with Melton taking down Drew Brees while Jack Crawford collected his first career sack when he helped foil a fake punt and took down punter Thomas Morstead. At Seattle (10/12) George Selvie took down Russell Wilson. Dallas had three sacks against Washington (10/27) as Melton logged his third career multi-sack game - first as a Cowboy - and Jeremy Mincey added his first of the season. The defense added two more sacks against Arizona (11/2), with Melton posting 1.5 for his fourth career multi-sack game - his fifth time in his career to have back-to-back sacks - and Anthony Spencer splitting a half sack, his first of the season. The defense logged a season-high four sacks at Jacksonville (11/9) as Brandon Carr and Cameron Lawrence both collected their first career sacks, while Jack Crawford and Mincey each added their second of the season. At the N.y. Giants (11/23), Mincey and Selvie had a sack. For the 2014 season, the Dallas defense has 17.0 sacks. SHUTTING OUT EACH HALF The Dallas Cowboys defense has stood strong early in the 2014 season, posting four shutouts that currently ties for 25th in team history during a single season. The 1973 defense had the most with 10 total shutouts in either the first or second half. Despite being behind 28-3 by halftime against San Francisco (9/7), the Cowboys defense responded in the second half by not allowing a single point in either the third or fourth quarters. It was the unit s first shutout of an opposing team s defense in the second half since against Buffalo (11/13/11). The last time a Cowboys defense had shutout an opponent s offense during either half in came in 2013 during the first half at Philadelphia (10/20) where the scoreless streak extended through the first three quarters. The Cowboys defense continued their shutout streak into their next game at Tennessee (9/14), holding the Titans offense scoreless in the first two quarters. The defense also limited Tennessee to 68 total offensive yards in the first half, two first downs and did not allow a successful third-down conversion. Though Tennessee scored in the third quarter to break up the shutout, the defense continued to stifle the Titans offense on third downs, holding them to two-of-10 (20.0%) overall to finish the game. Dallas defense pitched another shutout against New orleans (9/28), holding the Saints scoreless in the first half to mark the third time this season the defense held an opposing offense scoreless in a half. The defense also limited New orleans to 114 total yards and seven total first downs in the first two quarters. The squad then held houston (10/5) scoreless in the first half to mark the fourth shutout. DALLAS D POSSESSED At Jacksonville (11/9), the Dallas Cowboys defense was instrumental in holding the Jaguars offense in check. After giving up a touchdown on Jacksonville s first offensive drive of the game, the Dallas defense dug in, not allowing a scoring drive for the next 11 possessions until the Jaguars final drive of the game which ended in a touchdown. That 11-possession streak marked the longest for a Cowboys defense since the 2009 season when Dallas defense shut out Philadelphia s (1/3/10) offense on all 11 possessions. OH HENRY! The free agent addtion of defensive tackle henry Melton is beginning prove sweet for the Dallas Cowboys. After a relatively quiet start to the season for Melton on the sack front, the former Pro Bowler has picked up his play as of late by getting to opposing team s quarterbacks. he had 1.5 sacks through the first eight weeks of the season, but totaled 3.5 sacks in two games following two sacks against Washington (10/27) and 1.5 sacks against Arizona (11/2), to reach a team-high five on the season, two shy of his career-best of seven set during his 2011 season with Chicago. ROLANDO S NFL RETURN Rolando McClain, the former eighth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the oakland Raiders, joined the Dallas Cowboys via trade from the Baltimore Ravens on July 1, In each of his first three seasons ( ) with the Raiders he compiled over 85+ tackles, finishing in the top-five amongst oakland s top tacklers each year. overall, he compiled 274 stops, 6.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss and an interception in 41 games with 38 starts. Following his release by oakland on April 5, 2013, he signed a one-year contract with Baltimore on April 12, but retired from the NFL on May 15 and was out of football for the 2013 season. McClain was reinstated from the Reserve/Retired list on April 14, 2014, but abruptly retired once more on April 23. however, upon his trade to Dallas, he was reinstated and particpated in training camp and the preseason with the Cowboys where he finished fifth on the defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Due to McClain s strong play in the preseason, he earned the starting role at middle linebacker for the 2014 season. In his first game action since his last game with oakland on Nov. 25, 2012, he started at middle linebacker for the Cowboys against San Francisco (9/7) and led the team with 12 tackles - tied for the second-highest tackle total of his career - and a quarterback hurry. he followed that up leading the team in tackles once more at Tennessee (9/14) with 10 stops while also adding a sack, tackle for loss, his second career interception and a pass breakup. he missed the Week 3 game at St. Louis (9/21) due to a groin injury. At Seattle (10/12) McClain was second with eight tackles, a tackle for loss, a game-clinching interception and a pass breakup. Through 11 games, McClain leads the Cowboys defense with 79 stops. 22
