1 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES HOFSTRA (0-0) at #22 Gonzaga (0-0) Nov. 22, 10 p.m. (EST) The Kennel Spokane, WA TV/Radio: WRHU (88.7 FM, Streaks, Stats, and Storylines: For the second straight season, Hofstra plays one of the top mid-major programs in the nation in November. Last year, it defeated Kent State on Nov. 23 at the University Hoops Classic. Kent State went on to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Hofstra and Gonzaga were ranked 1-2 in the final regular season collgeinsider.com mid-major poll in the season. The Pride finished 26-5 that year. Hofstra is beginning its second season in the Colonial Athletic Association after moving to the CAA from the America East last winter. The Pride returns its entire roster from last year, but begins the season without projected starters Rick Apodaca and Wendell Gibson (suspension) and Danny Walker (injury). Hofstra (Speedy Claxton) and Gonzaga (John Stockton, Dan Dickau) have combined to produce three point guards currently in the NBA. Pride s Tentative Starters (w/ last year's stats) Po. No. Name Cl. 2 Exhibition Recap: Sophomore guard Michael Radziejewski had 18 points to lead five Hofstra players in double figures as Hofstra captured a win over the Adidas Panthers in an exhibition game on Tuesday Nov. 12 at Hofstra Arena. Sophomore forward Kenny Adeleke added 15 points and nine rebounds, while senior center Lars Grubler chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Pride. Also in double figures were freshman guard Gibran Washington with 11 and senior forward Marc Petit, who had 10 points and nine rebounds. Freshman walk-on Anthony Noble started at shooting guard and had seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Hofstra jumped out of the gate quickly to a 16-4 lead on a lay-up from Radziejewski. The Pride built its lead up to as many as 20 points in the first half at on a Petit 18-foot jumper, but the Panthers closed out the half with a 10-1 run to pull within at the break. The Panthers cut the lead down to single digits early in the second half and pulled to within six at on a three-pointer from guard Rich Rosario. However, Adeleke made back to back baskets to stretch the lead back up to double figures. After the Panthers cut the lead down to nine at 53-44, Hofstra went on a 10-2 run, capped off by a pair of Grubler free throws, to take control of the game for good. The Pride held a commanding edge on the boards for the evening and shot 53.3 percent from the floor (28-57). Hofstra did struggle at the free throw line, where it shot 14-28, and with turnovers, totaling 25. Lamar Parker led the Adidas Panthers with 12 points, while former Hofstra power forward Roberto Gittens had 10 points and six rebounds against his former teammates. Hofstra vs. Gonzaga: This game marks the first ever meeting between the Pride and Bulldogs, although it is not Hofstra's first-ever trip to the Kennel. The Pride participated in the Spokane Shootout at Gonzaga in the season under legendary head coach Butch van Breda Kolff, where it played Boston University and Howard. Hofstra went 1-1 at the tournament, dropping a overtime decision to Boston University in the opening round and defeating Howard in the consolation game Home, Sweet Home: Despite losing its last three home games of the season, Hofstra still has compiled a 42-6 record in its last 48 home games, dating back to the season. The Pride had a 26-game home court winning streak, which ranked third in the nation at the time, snapped in a loss to Delaware Nov. 30, The Pride is 26-6 all-time at Hofstra Arena (which opened January 2, 2000) after winning its last 16 games in the old Physical Fitness Center. Pride Hoping To Return To Winning Ways: Hofstra established itself as one of the top mid-major programs in the country over a three-year stretch from in which it compiled a record. Included in that run were back-to-back America East Conference championships in 2000 and 2001 and a 26-5 season in which saw the Pride earn the No. 1 spot in the final regular season collegeinsider.com mid-major poll (Gonzaga was #2). Hofstra graduated seven seniors from that team (the winningest class in school history) and moved into the CAA last year. The Pride slipped to a record last winter, when it had no seniors on its entire roster. Hofstra In Season Openers: Hofstra won its opening game last year against Florida Atlantic, the second year in a row that has started out the season with a victory. The Pride is all-time starting out a season, including in its 29 years at the Division I level. Adeleke Looks To Pick Up Where He Left Off: Sophomore forward Kenny Adeleke had an immediate impact for the Pride in his rookie season last year, culminating with the CAA Rookie of the Year Award. Adeleke averaged 13.5 points and 7.8 rebounds a game, including 26 points in Hofstra's loss to VCU in the CAA semifinals in the Pride's final game of the year. He also had 25 points in Hofstra's upset win over Kent State, which advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in March. The 7.8 rebounds were the most for any Hofstra player since Gerald King averaged 8.5 per game in the season. Adeleke also had a team-high nine double-doubles last winter, including one in his collegiate debut against Florida Atlantic (13 points, 10 rebounds). Adeleke's Double-Doubles Here is a list of the nine double-doubles that Kenny Adeleke registered during his freshman season a year ago: 11/17: vs. Fla. Atlantic 13 pts., 10 rebs. 12/8: vs. Stony Brook 24 pts., 13 rebs. 12/28: vs. Illinois-Chicago 15 pts., 15 rebs. 12/29: vs. Bucknell 10 pts., 12 rebs. 1/9: vs. VCU 15 pts., 13 rebs 2/4: at VCU 14 pts., 11 rebs. 2/13: vs. JMU 15 pts., 12 rebs. 2/23: at Delaware 18 pts., 14 rebs. 2/25: vs. Towson 21 pts., 15 rebs. 2
3 Souffrant Gets The Point: Sophomore Woody Souffrant emerged as a solid point guard for the Pride during the second half of last season. After beginning the year on the bench, Souffrant was rewarded with his first career start in Hofstra s Dec. 23 game against Drexel and responded to the starting assignment by dishing out 10 assists. That made him the first Pride player to reach double figures in assists since current San Antonio Spurs guard Speedy Claxton had 12 in a game against Northeastern on Jan. 28, He matched that 10- assist total in a Jan. 26 win over Delaware. Souffrant averaged 5.9 assists in conference games last year, ranking him third in the league. Don't I Know You?: Kenny Adeleke and Woody Souffrant are the only projected opening day starters this year who were also starters at the end of last year. The two players developed into solid teammates in the after high school careers in which they were adversaries. In fact, Souffrant's Grady High School team defeated Adeleke's Robeson High School squad in the 2001 New York City Public School Athletic League championship. Remarkably, they aren't even the only Pride sophomores who played against each other for New York championships, as Chris McRae's St. Raymond's team defeated Wendell Gibson's Archbishop Molloy squad in the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association championship that same year. The four players combined for one of the most decorated recruiting classes in Hofstra history, including two of the 100 finalists for the McDonald's All-American game (Gibson, McRae) and a third player (Adeleke) who was ranked as high as 52 in one scouting service. Apodaca, Gibson Out 14 Games: Senior guard Rick Apodaca and sophomore forward Wendell Gibson are both serving 14-game suspensions to begin the season for violation of university policy. The two players will become eligible to play their first games of the year on Jan. 18 against Old Dominion. The 14 games include all nine non-conference tilts and the first five CAA contests. The Pride's first three CAA games are against the teams that finished in the season (UNC-Wilmington, George Mason, VCU). Apodaca's loss is especially damaging to the Pride, as he was the team's leading scorer last season at 17.7 points per game, and led all CAA players with 19.2 points per game in conference contests. He had the ability to carry the Pride offense were long stretches, as he showed when he scored 20 points in the second half of the Pride's upset win over second-seeded George Mason in the CAA semifinals last winter. Gibson averaged 6.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in his rookie campaign and was a projected frontcourt starter going into this season. Kieza Out Five Games: Freshman forward Aurimas Kieza will miss the first five games of the season to serve an NCAA penalty for participating in a league with professional players in his native Lithuania. Kieza played in the league prior to coming to the United States, where he spent his senior year of high school at the Florida Air Academy in Melbourne, Florida. He will be eligible to play his first game when the Pride faces St. John's on Dec. 14. Walker Out With Injury: Senior small forward Danny Walker has yet to practice this season after suffering a severe ankle injury in early October and is not expected to play in the Pride's first few games. Walker's earlyseason recovery could determine whether or not the coaching staff chooses to redshirt him. Walker averaged 7.8 points and 6.1 rebounds last winter, ranking him third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding. Millar, McRae Nursing Injuries: Senior forward Osei Millar and sophomore swingman Chris McRae both missed Hofstra's exhibition game on Nov. 12 with minor injuries, but are expected to be available for the Pride's opener. Millar averaged 5.2 points and 4.4 rebounds and provides three-point shooting and shot blocking to the frontcourt. McRae, who averaged 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds, is a physical defender and strong open court player for the Pride at the wing positions. Radziejewski Assumes Larger Role: With the suspension to returning shooting guard Rick Apodaca and the injury to returning small forward Danny Walker, sophomore Michael Radziejewski has been forced to take on more responsibility this winter. Radziewjeski will be asked to be the Pride's top perimeter scorer to provide some balance to the inside scoring of Kenny Adeleke. Radziejewski has been a part of the Hofstra program since , when he redshirted during the Pride's 26-5 season. Last year, he played in 31 games, including 10 starts, and averaged 4.4 points. His season high was 15 in a home win over Delaware on January 25, a figure he surpassed with a team-high 18 points in the Pride's exhibition win on Nov. 12. Noble Impresses In Early Going: Freshman walkon guard Anthony Noble has been a pleasant surprise in preseason and may even be rewarded with a start in Hofstra's season opener. He was in the starting line-up in the Pride's exhibition game win over the Adidas Panthers on Nov. 12 and contributed seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Noble is from nearby Uniondale High School, where he averaged a triple-double as a senior with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists a game. 3
4 Seniors Lead Frontcourt: Hofstra lacks a little bit of experience in its backcourt this season, where sophomores Woody Souffrant and Michael Radziejewski are likely to start, with freshmen Gibran Washington and Anthony Noble also receiving playing time. That is not the case in the frontcourt, where three veteran seniors will be asked to provide leadership and experience. Marc Petit, in fact, is a sixth-year senior after missing two seasons ( , ) with injuries, while Osei Millar is a fifth-year senior after transferring from Boston College in December of 1999 and sitting out a year and a half. Lars Grubler is in his fourth season with the Pride, but even he earned his degree in three years and is currently in grad school. Grubler, who averaged 3.2 points and 2.7 rebounds, is pencilled in as the starting center, while Petit (1.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg) is expected to be a solid contributor off the bench. Millar (5.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg) saw action at small forward, power forward and center last winter, providing Hofstra with much-needed versatility. Apodaca 17th In Scoring: Senior guard Rick Apodaca became the 24th player to score 1,000 career points at Hofstra in the Pride's loss to George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 8. He now has 1,151 points, putting him in 17 th place. He has a chance to climb as high as seventh when he becomes eligible on Jan. 18 after serving a 14- game suspension. Hofstra 1,000-Point Club: 1) Steve Nisenson ,222 2) Rich Laurel ,102 3) Bill Thieben ,045 4) Craig Claxton ,015 5) David Taylor ,818 6) Norman Richardson ,677 7) Frank Walker ,437 8) Leroy Allen ,435 9) Ken Rood ,368 10) Dave Bell ,330 11) Barry White ,286 11) Mike Tilley ,286 13) Roberto Gittens ,240 14) Demetrius Dudley ,220 14) John Mills ,220 16) Ted Jackson ,159 17) Rick Apodaca 1999-pres. 1,151 18) Wandy Williams ,132 19) Richie Swartz ,107 20) Derrick Flowers ,069 21) Darius Burton ,060 22) Percy Johnson ,045 23) James Shaffer ,022 24) John Irving ,018 Hofstra Signs Three: The Pride signed three players to national letters of intent in the early signing period, including 6-2 guard Carlos Rivera (Miami, FL/Bridgeton Academy), 6-9 forward Brian Sisti (Northport, NY/ Northport High School), and 6-4 swingman Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY/St. Thomas More). Rivera is playing this season at Bridgeton Academy in Maine for head coach Whit Leisure after playing last season at Miami Christian, where he led his team to a 38-2 record and a Florida Class 1A state championship. Miami Christian set a Florida high school record with their 38 wins and were ranked 11th in the country in the final USA Today scholastic rankings. He was a first-team all-florida selection after averaging 21.9 points, five assists and five rebounds a game. Sisti, meanwhile, averaged14 points and 13 rebounds for Northport High School and head coach George Frank as a junior. Stokes will play for head coach Jere Quinn at St. Thomas More Academy in Connecticut this season. Last year, he averaged 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists at Bishop Carroll High School in Buffalo and was named the Western New York State Player of the Year after leading his squad to a 23-2 record. Hofstra has two scholarships remaining for the High School Class of 2003, although the Pride has no juniors on its roster this season and may choose to keep those scholarships available for next year's recruiting class. Pride Returns To MSG: Hofstra will return to its home away from home when it plays St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 14. Last year, the Pride's win over Iona at the Marty Glickman Classic on Dec. 1 continued a recent trend of success for the Pride when playing at the Garden. Hofstra is now 6-1 in its last seven games at the "World's Most Famous Arena", including two straight ECAC Holiday Festival Championships in 1998 and 1999 and a runner-up finish in Hofstra Hosts In-Season Tourney: The Pride will host the Hofstra/Wingate Inn Holiday Tournament on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, facing Lehigh in the opening round, while Quinnipiac and Texas-Pan American face off in the other first round game. It is the first in-season tournament that Hofstra has hosted since the season, when it won the Hofstra Classic with victories over St. Joseph's (N.Y.) and Westmont. Up Next: Hofstra returns to action on Monday when it faces St. Francis (N.Y.) at 9 p.m. in the Coaches vs. Cancer Snapple College Slam at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, NY. Manhattan and Sacred Heart play in the first half of the doubleheader at 7 p.m. 4
5 Odds And Ends: Some strange, unusual, and sometimes relevant facts regarding Hofstra basketball: Defense Tells The Story: Hofstra has won 30 straight games when holding opponents to less than 60 points (3-0 last year), dating back to a loss to Rutgers at the Postseason NIT in They are also over the last three years (10-8 last season) when holding opponents to less than 70 points. Closing Time: Much like a baseball team with a dominant closer, it has proven to be very difficult for opponents to come from behind against the Pride recently. Since the start of the season, Hofstra is 47-6 when leading at the half (7-2 last year), and 58-1 when leading with 2:00 left in the game (12-1 last year). Its lone loss came when Hofstra led with 2:00 left in its loss to William & Mary last Feb. 16. Board Scores: Hofstra was outrebounded only eight times last season in 32 games (going 1-7 in those contests). In fact, in the last two years, Hofstra has been outrebounded only 14 times in 63 games (going 5-9 in those contests), or just 22.2 percent of the time. The Pride has a record over that same two-year span when it holds the rebounding advantage (and 1-1 when rebounds were even). Share And Share Alike: The Pride has won its last 21 games (including 13-0 two years ago and 5-0 last year) when four or more players score in double figures. Beyond The Arc: Hofstra shot 1-13 from three-point territory in a win over Iona last Dec. 1, ending a streak of 114 straight games with more than one threepointer. The last time Hofstra was held without a trey was in at Boston University games ago. Working Overtime: Hofstra's overtime game last year against Illinois State in the third place game at the University Hoops Classic on Nov. 25 was a bit of a rarity in recent years for the Pride. Hofstra played only two overtime games in Jay Wright's seven-year tenure: an win over Maine in and an win over Hartford in Overall, the Pride has won its last eight overtime games, dating back to a loss to Boston University in the season. Camera Shy?: The last two years have seen the Pride strangely perform much better when not on television. Last season, Hofstra was 2-12 on TV, 10-8 when untelevised. The year before, the Pride was 11-5 on TV and a perfect 15-0 when no cameras were present. CAA Standings: Here are the final CAA standings and tournament results from : Team Conf.
