The five-member class of 2012, consisting of Shannon Bone, Ryan Rotanz, Jessica Nonn, Julie Wolfinger and Morgan Widlake, will be recognized before their final game at Thompson Field. This weekend s clash with Columbia marks the first time since 2006 that the Hokies have wrapped up the regular season against a team other than Maryland, as well as a nonconference opponent. Series Info: Columbia This weekend s matchup marks just the second time the Hokies have faced the Columbia Lions. Tech took the only other meeting, topping the Lions at Thompson Field in The Hokies are 1-2 all-time against teams currently in the Ivy League. The only other Ivy League team Tech has faced is Cornell, on two occasions. Scouting Report: Columbia The Lions will also conclude their 2012 season Saturday, as they enter the game with a 2-12 record. They went 0-7 in the Ivy League this year and will look to snap a three-game losing streak while also searching for their first road win of the season. Kacie Johnson has paced the Lions offense this season, tallying 40 goals and 32 assists. On the defensive end, Amanda Goodhart has caused a team-best 28 turnovers, while also grabbing 30 ground balls. In cage for Columbia has been Skylar Dabbar. She has been the only player to see time in goal this year and has made 124 saves, good for a.394 percentage. Will Named To ACC All-Tournament Team Freshman Megan Will was recently named to the All-Tournament team after a three-goal performance against Maryland in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Will is just the second Hokie to earn the honor and was the only freshman on this year s squad. Nonn Earns All-ACC Honor Senior middie Jessica Nonn was named to the 2012 All- ACC squad after what has been a stellar final season. This is the first of such honors for the Catonsville, Md., native, as she becomes just the fourth Hokie to garner the accolade. 2 Player Spotlight Megan Will Fr. Attack Bel Air, Md. Freshman Megan Will earned ACC All-Tournament Team honors earlier this week after her threegoal performance in Tech s quarterfinal game against Maryland. Will was the only freshman named to this year s squad and the first Hokie to earn the honor since Natasha Fuchs did so in The Bel Air, Md., native was the only Hokie to tally multiple points in the tournament game and she put away two of Tech s three second-half goals. Will is one of just two freshmen to start more than half of Tech s games this season and currently ranks second on the squad in scoring (27) and points (33). History Made Topping No. 7 Hoos The Hokies downed their in-state rival No. 7 Virginia two weeks ago, 10-9 in overtime for the first time in program history. The win gives Tech its first win over a top-10 team, while it also marks the second straight season the Hokies have knocked off a ranked conference opponent. Even play and long possessions themed regulation, as neither team led by more than two goals at any point. It was the late heroics of senior middie Jessica Nonn that kept Tech alive. She scored the final three goals of the game for Tech, including the overtime game-winner. This was Tech s first overtime game since the 2009 season and its third straight win in extra time. Nonn Honored for Top Performance Senior leader Jessica Nonn was honored for her performance against No. 7 Virginia. After scoring the eventual game-winning goal, as well as the final two Tech goals of regulation, Nonn earned various weekly honors. She was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week as well as Synapse Sports Offensive Player of the Week, WomensLax.com Player of the Week and Virginia Tech Hardees Star of the Week. Tech Against The Best As a memeber of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Hokies have the opportunity to face numerous ranked teams every season. Tech is 5-71 all-time against ranked teams, as it recently upped that record with a historic, 10-9 overtime win over in-state rival Virgina. The Cavaliers were ranked seventh in the country that week. The win was Tech s first ever over a top-10 team. The Hokies have faced back-to-back ranked conference twice this season and faced then-no. 13 James Madison in nonconference play. Tech wraped up conference play by traveling to No. 4 Maryland and six days later faced the No. 4 Terps in the ACC Tournament. Leading the Way Captaining the Hokies in 2012 are seniors Shannon Bone, Jessica Nonn and Julie Wolfinger. The trio earned team captain honors before the year began and will look to lead their team in their final season. The three players have combined to start 130 games, scoring 130 goals and assisting on 32 more. On the defensive end, they have scooped up 233 ground balls and caused 131 turnovers through their three previous seasons. Nonn Spearheads Veteran Midfield Already a dominant player on the field, senior Jessica Nonn has extended her takeover this season to Tech s record books. While the Catonsville, Md., native leads the team in every statistical category, she also ranks among the all-time best at Tech in all categories except assists. Nonn holds the No. 2 spot in caused turnovers and ground balls, while also ranking third in draw controls, goals and points. The senior has scored in 14 of the 15 games so far this season. She ranks third in the ACC with 1.75 ground balls per game. Gale in Goal Junior Alex Gale remains as the starter in the cage for the Hokies, which makes it her third season as the primary goalkeeper. The Cicero, N.Y., native has made 79 saves so far this season, including at least six in five of the last seven games. Despite the loss, Gale came up big against William & Mary, blocking all four free position attempts in the game. Later, Gale allowed just one goal in the first half at Mt. St. Mary s and came up big for her team, espcially in the closing minutes to help seal a win at Old Dominion. Widlake Adds to Powerful Midfield Senior Morgan Widlake adds greatly to the depth and experience in an already veteran midfield for the Hokies. Widlake has been a staple in the starting line-up since arriving at Tech three seasons ago and has been a force on both end of the field. The Catonsville, Md., native ranks second on the squad with 28 ground balls, and is also third on the team with 18 caused turnovers, 22 goals and 36 draws. Will has missed just two starts in her career and is second on the team with 27 goals this season. Boissonneault has grabbed 16 ground balls and has tallied 16 points. Bartley has earned at least one point in ten of Tech s last 12 games, while also consistantly dominating the draw. Back Where They Belong Juniors Brooke Martin and Libby Rosebro have both transitioned back to their original positions this season and have proven they are happy to be back. Rosebro contributed greatly on defense last season but has rejoined the midfield this year due to her offensive success in the off-season. The Richmond, Va., native has tallied 19 points, 16 ground balls and ten casued turnovers on the year. Martin rejoins the attack this season from the midfield last year. She has tallied 22 goals and 27 points, inluding an impressive six-goal outing against High Point. Protecting the Cage The Tech defense has a much different look in Senior captain Julie Wolfinger speadheads the newly constructed unit and she is joined by junior Charlotte Marsh, redshirt freshman Taylor Landry and redshirt junior Chirstina Patten, who both missed last season due to injury. Relieving the starting crew has been freshman Ann Wallace Tazewell and junior Kristin Semones. Fifteen games into the season, the unit is stronger than ever, tallying 44 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers collectively. Fresh Start All eight of the team s freshmen saw action in the seasonopening win over Presbyterian College, while newcomer Megan Will also started the game. Will led all newcomers with three points in the game as she buried the first three goals of her career. Also earning their first points were Jack Boissonneault (2g), Maddy Hess (1g, 1a), Rachel Skay (1g), Cawley Bromley (1a) and Meg Bartley (1a). Changing Things Around Tech will see a number of players switch positions this season or return to positions they previously played. Senior leader Shannon Bone, who has served as somewhat of a utility player for the Hokies and also saw a lot of time on the defensive end last year, will also reposition herself into the midfield. Junior Brooke Martin will move out of the midfield, where she gave the Hokies great minutes off the bench last season and get back to her original position on attack. Also moving out of the midfield will be Taylor Landry. Landry missed last season due to injury and saw some time in the offseason as a middie, but really excelled on the defensive end. New Additions for 2012 On top of adding new assistant coach Sarah Jonson to the staff in the offseason, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team has welcomed eight freshmen this season in Maddy Hess, Cawley Bromley, Jack Boissonneault, Ann Wallace Tazewell, Meg Bartley, Rachel Skay, Caroline Boucher and Megan Will. The class represents six different states, with only two players hailing from the same state, as well as Canada.
