3 BO RYAN - COACH OF THE YEAR Bo Ryan was named consensus 2013 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Ryan who also won Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2002 and 2003 trails only Gene Keady of Purdue (7) and Bob Knight of Indiana (5) for the most conference coach of the year awards. UW was universally picked to finish between 5th and 8th in the Big Ten this year and many of those projections were before the Badgers lost starting PG Josh Gasser before the season began. Ryan guided the Badgers to their 12th-straight top-4 fi nish in the Big Ten and fourth-straight season with at least 12 conference wins. After a 9-4 non-conference season, Bo Ryan s Badgers fi nished among the Big Ten s top 4 and ended the season just 2 games out of the conference title. In his career, Ryan has now won conference Coach of the Year honors 9 times, including 6 WIAC honors as the head coach at UW-Platteville. UW S RARE EARLY EXIT FROM NCAAS The Badgers lost an opening-round game for just the 2nd time in 12 seasons under Bo Ryan, falling to No. 12 seed Ole Miss, in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in Kansas City. UW led at the half, but shot just 22% in the second half (3-for-17, 16.6% from 3-point range). Freshman Sam Dekker was the only Badger in double fi gures with 14 points. Senior Jared Berggren chipped in 8 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks in his fi nal collegiate game. WISCONSIN S BIG TEN TOURNEY RUN The Badgers played 3 top-10 teams in 3 days at the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, coming up just short of winning the team s 3rd conference tournament title. Wisconsin beat No. 6 Michigan, 68-59, in the quarterfinals. Then knocked off top-seeded and 3rd-ranked Indiana, 68-56, in the semifinals before losing, 50-43, to No. 2 seed Ohio State in the championship game. The Badgers advanced to the championship game for the first time since winning the title in Overall, UW made its fifth appearance in the Big Ten tournament championship. After scoring just 17 points in the first half of the opener against Michigan, UW scored a seasonhigh 51 points in the second half - it s highestscoring half vs. a Big Ten opponent since Wisconsin shot just 17.2% in the first half, but blistered the nets to the tune of 60.7% (66.7% from 3-point range) in the second half. The Badgers held their 3 opponents to a collective 9-for-46 from 3-point range (19.6%). Ohio St. shot just 1-for-16 from deep in the championship. UW tallied 18 blocks and 22 steals over the three-day span. Senior Ryan Evans and sophomore Traevon Jackson were named to the All-Tournament team. Evans averaged team highs with 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He also blocked 4 shots in 3 games. Jackson was 2nd on the Badgers averaging 11.0 points, while dishing 3.0 assists per game. Junior Ben Brust also averaged double figures for the tournament, scoring 10.7 points per game. Brust went 6-for-14 (42.9%) from 3-point range. WRECKING THE RANKED With wins over No. 6 Michigan and No. 3 Indiana in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, UW went 7-6 against teams in the AP Top 25 this season, with all 7 wins coming vs. teams ranked in the top 15. UW s 7 victories against teams ranked in the top 15 is the most in the country, tied with Indiana. UW s 7 top-25 wins is the 2nd-highest mark in school history, trailing UW s 8 wins over ranked teams in The Badgers also own a school-record four top-10 victories this season. UW is the only team in the country to have played 13 games against AP Top-15 opponents. No other team in Division 1 has even faced double-digit top-15 foes (Ohio State next highest with 9). Over the last 3 years, the Badgers are (.564) overall against top-25 teams. The Badgers have 3 wins vs. Top 10 teams away from home this season (at No. 2 Indiana and vs. No. 6 Michigan and No. 3 Indiana at the Big Ten Tournament), which is tied with Indiana for the most of any team in the country. Wisconsin s win at No. 2 Indiana on Jan. 15 represented the school s fi rst road win over a team ranked in the top 3 of the AP poll. BADGERS TRIO EARN BIG TEN HONORS In addition to Bo Ryan taking home Big Ten Coach of the Year accolades, three Wisconsin players were honored by the conference. Senior Jared Berggren was named consensus second-team All-Big Ten. He also took home All-Defensive Team honors and earned Wisconsin s Sportsmanship Award. UW has had a member of the All-Defensive Team in 6 of the last 7 years: Michael Flowers (2007, 2008), Joe Krabbenhoft (2008), Trévon Hughes (2010), Jordan Taylor (2011) and Josh Gasser (2012). Wisconsin (2001-present) Purdue ( Illinois ( ) During UW s streak of 13 straight winning seasons, every other Big Ten team has had multiple seasons with losing records, except Michigan St., who has finished.500 twice in that span. Among the 6 major conferences, only Kansas (23 seasons) has a longer active streak of finishing above.500 in league play. With a career record of (.706), Bo Ryan owns the 2nd-best winning pct. in Big Ten history. NEW LEVELS OF WINNING The Badgers won 23 games in , the 9thhighest single-season win total in school history. Bo Ryan-led teams own each of the top 9 spots in the UW record book for single-season wins. Wisconsin Record Book, Single-Season Wins ANOTHER 20-WIN SEASON The Badgers reached the 20-win threshold for the 7th consecutive season and the 10th time in Bo Ryan s 12 seasons at UW. Prior to Ryan s arrival, the Badgers had just four 20-win seasons in 103 years of basketball. UW s win seasons since is 2nd in the Big Ten behind Illinois (11). The Badgers streak of 20-win seasons is also the 2nd-longest active streak in the Big Ten behind OSU s 8 straight. In regular season games played on Feb. 1 or later, Ryan s teams have gone (.741) over his 12 seasons. That includes a mark of 7-3 this year. Over the last 5 years, Wisconsin has gone (.739) in regular-season games in February and March, the top mark in the Big Ten. Last 5 Seasons, Reg. Season Record Feb. 1 or Later Team Record Pct. 1. Wisconsin Ohio State Michigan State Purdue ROAD WARRIORS Under Bo Ryan, Wisconsin is renowned for its incredible home record, but the Badgers have also enjoyed remarkable success on the road. Since Bo Ryan was hired in 2001, Wisconsin has been the Big Ten s best road team, owning the most true road wins (67) and best road win percentage (.504) in the conference. In fact, in that era Wisconsin is the only Big Ten team with a road record of.500 or better. Wisconsin Ohio State Indiana Michigan State A FINISH THAT LASTS One of the keys to Wisconsin s success is its remarkable ability to fi nish games. Dating back to February of 2011, the Badgers have won 56 of their last 57 games when leading or tied with 5:00 to go. That includes a mark of 21-1 this season with the only loss coming at Minnesota in which UW led with 5:00 remaining.

5 WHAT S TRENDING This season there have been some dramatic trends that seem to infl uence Wisconsin s games. UW went 18-0 when shooting a better FG% than its opponent and 5-12 when the opponent shoots the same or better. The Badgers have won 90 of their last 91 games when owning the better FG percentage, including 21 consecutive such wins. UW s only loss since 2009 when shooting a higher FG% was a loss at Iowa (2/23/12). UW is 13-0 when shooting at least 45.0% from the fi eld and when not reaching that mark. Wisconsin s last loss when shooting 45.0% or better was a loss at Iowa (2/23/12). UW is 22-6 when holding foes below 45.0% shooting & 1-6 when opponents are over 45.0%. UW is 16-2 when owning the rebound edge and 7-10 when its opponent grabs the same or more rebounds. The Badgers out-rebounded Iowa in a losing effort as well as Minnesota UW had won 12 straight when having an advantage on the glass prior to Iowa (1/19/13). UW is 18-5 when holding opponents below 60 points and 5-7 when foes reach 60. BUZZER-BEATING BADGERS Wisconsin has had 20 buzzer-beaters (last second or as time ran out) in school history, and 2 happened this season. Ben Brust hit a half-court shot as time expired to force overtime against Michigan (2/9). Trailing by 3 with 2.4 seconds left, Brust caught the ball near mid-court, took one dribble to gather himself before making the shot from near the sideline. UW would go on to win, 65-62, in overtime. Brust s shot was the 3rd buzzer-beater in school history that forced overtime and led to a win. One month later, sophomore Traevon Jackson turned the trick in the Badgers regular-season fi nale at Penn State. With the game tied and 3.3 seconds remaining, Jackson dribbled the length of the court and made a 25-foot 3-pointer as time expired for a win. BLOCK PARTY Led by a school-record 73 blocks from senior Jared Berggren, the Badgers equaled a team record with 153 blocks on the season. The 153 swats were the most in school history since the team posted the same number. Wisconsin Record Book, Single-Season Blocks Blocks Year BERGGREN NAMED TO NAISMITH TOP-30 Senior Jared Berggren was selected as one of 30 fi nalists for the 2013 Naismith Award, an honor awarded annually to the nation s top player. Berggren finished 2nd on the Badgers and 24th in the Big Ten averaging 11.0 points per game. He was 6th in the conference at 6.9 rebounds per game. He was one of just 4 players (joining IU s Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo and NU s Brandon Ubel) to rank among the Big Ten s top 25 scorers & top 10 rebounders. Berggren also led the Big Ten averaging 2.1 blocks per game and became Wisconsin s all-time blocks leader, owning 144 for his career. Berggren had 3 double-doubles in Big Ten play: 16 points, a career-high 14 rebounds (8 offensive) and a career-best 7 blocks vs. Iowa (2/6). 15 points and 12 rebounds vs. Illinois (1/12). 12 points and 10 rebounds at Penn St. (3/10). NATION S BEST POST DEFENDER? UW s all-time blocks leader, Berggren received the defensive praise he deserved in ESPN analyst Dan Dakich named Berggren his co-defensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten alongside Indiana s Victor Oladipo. The Sporting News Mike DeCourcy tweeted: Jared Berggren is the best returning defensive big man in college basketball. Period. Luke Winn of Sports Illustrated ranked Berggren 10th on his preseason list of the nation s top impact defenders. ESPN s Jay Bilas said, Berggren is an outstanding shot blocker and a deceptive athlete. He s one of the better defenders in the country. 3-POINT SHARP-SHOOTERS UW had 7 different players who have made at least 10 3-pointers this season, including 6 with 20 or more. Northwestern was the only other team in the Big Ten to have 6 different players connect on 20+ triples. Individually, Sam Dekker, George Marshall and Ben Brust finished ranked among the Big Ten s top 3-point shooters. Dekker ranked 7th in the Big Ten connecting on 39.1% (50-128) from long range. He made at least 1 triple in all but 5 games. Brust was 8th in the Big Ten, shooting 38.9% from deep (79-for-203). Brust s 79 3-pointers set a new UW single-season record, surpassing Sean Mason s 78 in Brust averaged pointers per game, the 5th-highest average in the conference. He had hit a 3-pointer in 22 consecutive games before going 0-for-2 against Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. In fact, Brust had hit multiple treys in 15 straight games. This year s team is scoring at a better rate than last year s team thanks to a few significant factors: Balance: UW had 8 players capable of leading the team in scoring 3-pt shooting: UW had 7 players with at least 14 made triples and 3 of the Big Ten s top 12 shooters. Low turnovers: UW ranked 4th in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (9.8 avg.). Offensive rebounding: UW averaged 11.6 offensive rebounds per game (9.7 last season). According to STATS, Inc., the Badgers averaged 1.04 points per possession this season. That figure is 6th in the Big Ten. UW has averaged over 1.0 offensive points per possession in each of Bo Ryan s fi rst 11 seasons The Badgers averaged 65.0 points per game, having reached 80 points 5 times and topped 70 points in 14 games. A year ago, UW averaged 64.0 ppg and topped 70 just 9 times. BALANCED BADGERS A year ago Jordan Taylor led Wisconsin in scoring in over half of the team s games. This season, 8 different Badgers led the team in scoring. During Big Ten play alone, 7 different players led the Badgers in scoring - Jared Berggren, Ryan Evans, George Marshall, Mike Bruesewitz, Sam Dekker, Traevon Jackson and Ben Brust. Wisconsin has seen 8 different players score in double figures in a game this season, and 7 different players have reached at least 15 points in a game. CONTROL FREAKS Over the last 3 seasons, no one in the country has taken care of the ball better than Wisconsin... and it s not even close. For the fourth-straight season, Wisconsin fi nished among the nation s top four in fewest turnovers per game. Wisconsin finished the season 4th in NCAA Div. I with an average of just 9.77 per game. The team pulled in 1,287 rebounds and 406 offensive boards. Both marks ranked 2nd on the school's all-time single-season list. Wisconsin ranked 6th in the Big Ten averaging 11.5 offensive rebounds per game this season after averaging 9.7 offensive rpg last season. By comparison, UW s opponents averaged just 9.3 offensive rebounds per game, which was 2nd behind Penn State (8.9) for the Big Ten s best mark. The Badgers led the Big Ten in defensive rebounding percentage, grabbing 73.1% of possible defensive board chances. SHACKLING NATION S TOP OFFENSES Wisconsin once again boasts one of the nation s top defenses, but what the Badgers have done against the Big Ten s top offenses is what might separate this unit from previous versions. Wisconsin has played four games against Indiana and Michigan, the two highest-scoring teams in the Big Ten. UW went 4-0 in those games. The Badgers limited Indiana to 57.5 points per game in the two matchups. IU averaged 81.5 ppg. in its other 31 games this season. In two games vs. UW, the Hoosiers made just 8-of-29 (.276) 3-pointers. Against everyone else, IU shot.418 from distance. In two meetings with Michigan, the Wolverines averaged 60.5 points per game (that includes one OT game). In its other 37 games this year UM averaged 76.0 ppg. Michigan made just 8-of-31 (.258) 3-pointers in two games against UW but made 39.0 percent of its treys against all other competition. In the win over Ohio State (2/17), the Badgers held OSU to a season-low 49 points and equaled their fewest 3-pointers in a game going 3-for-12. In the 2013 Big Ten Championship, the Buckeyes were held to just 50 points on a season-low 1-for-16 (6.3%) shooting from 3-point range. Illinois averages 69.1 points per game and leads in the Big Ten making pointers per game. In 2 games against UW, the Illini averaged just 59.5 ppg and made a COMBINED 4 3-pointers (4-for-27).
