In 2004, he took over for long-time head coach and Hall of Famer Jerry Yeagley, winning a national title in his first season. Freitag became only the third first-year head coach, joining Saint Louis coaches Harry Keough (1967) and Bob Guelker (1959), to lead his program to a national title. In his five seasons as head coach, IU has compiled a (.728) record. Freitag has been involved in five of s seven national championships. Last season Freitag saw his team advance to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and make its 14th appearance in the Big Ten Tournament championship match while posting a record of The Hoosiers went against opponents ranked in the top 25 while recording shutouts against eight of those 11 teams. In five seasons as head coach, he has coached nine National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All-Americans. He has had 13 players sign professional contracts, including 11 Major League Soccer (MLS) draft selections. Last year the Hoosiers had two first-team All-Big Ten selctions, led by unanimous pick Kevin Alston, along with Brad Ring. Andy Adlard and Eric Alexander were named to the second team, while Will Bruin and Tommy Meyer were unanimous selections to the All-Freshman Team. Bruin became the third Hoosier in the last four years and the 10th overall to take home the Big Ten Freshman of the Year honor. Alston and Ring were taken in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft with Alston going in the No. 10 spot to the New England Revolution, and Ring taken 17th by the San Jose Earthquakes. Freitag took home a personal honor in 2009 when he was inducted into the Colorado State Youth Soccer Hall of Fame. In 2007, Freitag earned his second-straight Big Ten Coach of the Year honor after leading the Hoosiers to a conference record and the Big Ten regular season title. He earned the award in 2006 as the Hoosiers won the Big Ten regular season championship and Big Ten Tournament Championship titles. Freitag s 2006 squad captured the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles and was led by Big Ten Player of the Year Josh Tudela and Big Ten Freshman of the Year Darren Yeagle. John Michael Hayden joined Tudela on the first team, while Yeagle and defender Greg Stevning were second-team honorees. During his second season in 2005, the Freitag-led Hoosiers went , capturing the third seed in the NCAA Tournament. IU had three first team All-Big Ten selections and a pair of second team honorees and All-Freshman team choices. He also had the first Big Ten Player of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year players during his tenure. Brian Plotkin was the lone unanimous first team All-Big Ten selection on his way to being named the conference player of the year. In total, six players from the 2005 squad signed professional contracts. Lee Nguyen signed with Holland power PSV Eindhoven. Four Hoosiers were drafted into the MLS with Jed Zayner (13th overall 82

2 Columbus Crew), Plotkin (20th overall Chicago Fire) and Jacob Peterson (21st overall Colorado Rapids) going in the second round and Mike Ambersley (43rd overall FC Dallas) going in the fourth round. Jordan Chirico and Ambersley also signed with the Rochester Raging Rhinos of the United Soccer League (USL) First Division. He was the head coach of the Region IV Olympic Development Program ( ) and head coach of the Colorado State Olympic Development Program (1987). Presser was a four-year letterwinner for the Hoosiers from , helping the Hoosiers win their fifth national title in Prior to returning to, Presser was an assistant coach under former assistant and player John Trask at the University of Illinois-Chicago during the 2005 season. Presser is no stranger to coaching at. In 2003, he became the first undergraduate assistant coach for the squad. The 2003 team went on to win the first championship of back-to-back national title runs in 2003 and In 2002, the Hoosier defense ranked 15th nationally in goals against average at 0.77 with Presser. The squad also notched eight shutouts. In all, Presser helped the IU program to a record (.786), including three trips to the NCAA College Cup. Presser was a three-year starter for the Hoosiers at the defensive midfield position. He earned All-Big Ten accolades in 2001 and In total, Presser started 67 games during his four-year career. The versatile player tallied 10 career points with two goals and six assists. His lone goal in the 2001 season proved to be the game-winner in the third round of the NCAA Tournament against Rutgers. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native was the 1998 Player of the Year, a high school All-American and the Gatorade State Player of the Year as a senior at Canterbury High School. He led the Cavaliers to consecutive High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) State Championships. Along with his exploits in the collegiate and prep ranks, Presser played professionally for the Kansas City Comets and the Chicago Storm of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He helped the Comets reach the final four in In 2003, Presser graduated from with a bachelor s degree in management from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA). He and his wife, Kristal, reside in Bloomington with their 11-month-old daughter, Ava. 84

4 ALEKSEY KOROL 2009 indiana men s soccer ASSISTANT COACH personal Date of Birth: October 14, 1977 Birthplace: Belaya Tserkov, Ukraine High School: Livonia, 1996 College:, 2005 B.S., Sports Management Coaching Experience UIC : Assistant Coach Former IU All-American Aleksey Korol joined the coaching staff in February Korol comes to IU from UIC where he spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach for Hoosier alum John Trask. During his three seasons the Flames compiled a record of and advanced to the NCAA Tournament each season, incuding appearances in the quarterfinals in 2007 and the round of 16 in His duties at UIC included assisting with daily team training, individual instruction and oversite of compliance issues. Korol helped lead the Flames to the Horizon League regular season title and an appearance in the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament while recording a record of in In 2007 UIC captured the Horizon League title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. In his first season at UIC the squad went , defeating nationally-ranked foes Saint Louis and eventual national champion UC Santa Barbara on the road during a nine-match unbeaten streak to open That led to a Horizon League regular-season title and an at-large berth into the NCAA Division I men s soccer championship. While at UIC Korol also served as a coach with Chicago United FC and John Trask Total Soccer. Korol is no stranger to championship success dating back to his four-year career at from During that period the Hoosiers won backto-back NCAA titles in his junior and senior seasons and he made three College Cup appearances. As a sophomore he netted 14 goals and seven assists as the Hoosiers posted a 23-1 mark. The following year, he tallied 17 goals and 44 points as IU went 23-3 and defeated Stanford for the national title. During his senior campaign he netted 20 goals and became the first IU player in a decade to tally 50 points. He earned Big Ten Player of the Year, NSCAA All-America and Soccer America Player of the Year honors that season. He was later named to the Soccer America All-Decade team in the `90s. Korol currently ranks fourth on IU s all-time points scored list with 57 goals and 149 points. Drafted by Dallas with the fifth pick in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft, Korol played two seasons for the Burn, playing in 36 matches and scoring seven goals, and appeared in one game for the Chicago Fire before injury hampered his MLS career. He played in the United Soccer League in 2002 (Rochester Rhinos), 2003 (Pittsburgh Riverhounds) and 2004 (Charleston Battery). He also had a stint with the Kansas City Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League in Korol earned a B.S. in Sports Management from in Originally from the Ukraine, he was selected at the age of 12 for the Dinamo Kiev Youth Academy where he spent three seasons before coming to the United States Present: Assistant Coach 85

5 2009 indiana men s soccer hoosier STAFF MIKE SANICH Volunteer Assistant Coach First Year CHAY CAIN Student Assistant Coach First Year JOE LUEKEN Assistant Athletics Trainer 17th Season Mike Sanich is in his first season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Hoosiers. Sanich has earned a reputation as one of the foremost goalkeeper coaches in the Midwest. He is currently a volunteer staff goalkeeper coach for the State of and a staff coach with U.S. Youth Soccer s Region II Olympic Development Program. His long career in as both a player and coach stretches back to the early 1970s. In 1996, Sanich started in the professional field when he joined the staff of the Blast of the USISL. Sanich s coaching resume includes stints with Butler University, DePauw University, Wabash College and IUPUI. In addition to lending his expertise in the field of goalkeeper training to University, Sanich also brings an extensive background in strength and conditioning. Chay Cain is in his first year as a student assistant coach after an outstanding four-year career for the Hoosiers. Cain will focus on working with the goalkeepers. A four-year letterwinner at IU, Cain earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2007 with a record in goal and a 0.61 goals-against average. He posted 10 shutouts that season, allowing just one goal in Big Ten play as captured the regular-season title with a record. Cain was also an NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes Region secondteam pick. In 2006 Cain was named the Defensive Player of the Big Ten Championship as the Hoosiers won the conference crown. He finished the year eighth in the nation and first in the Big Ten with a 0.57 goals-against average and recorded 10 shutouts. As a senior Cain helped lead to a record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. For the third-straight season he recorded 10 clean sheets and finished the year with a 0.97 goals-against average while tallying 65 saves. Cain currently ranks among the top 10 in career saves, shutouts and victories. In the classroom Cain was a three-time ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America selection, as well as a three-time Academic All-Big Ten pick. He was named to the NSCAA/adidas Men s Scholar All-America second team in Cain is currently finishing up his degree in accounting in the Kelley School of Business. Joe Lueken begins his 13th season as the head athletic trainer for the soccer program and his 17th overall at IU. Former head coach Jerry Yeagley repeatedly praised Lueken for his work in keeping the IU regulars on the field and not on the injured list. Lueken has served as an athletic trainer at for the past 16 years and also has worked with the golf, track and field, football and baseball teams. In addition, he is an instructor and teaches within the curriculum of the athletic training programs. Lueken previously served as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs. He was responsible for team preparation, practice and competitive coverage for various teams, international travel and administrative responsibilities for the Sports Medicine clinic. Lueken earned a bachelor s degree in exercise and sports sciences from in 1987 and a master s from Arizona in He and his wife, Pam, are the parents of two daughters, Mckenzie and Abbie. The family resides in Bloomington. 86

6 hoosier STAFF 2009 indiana men s soccer TOM MORRIS Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach 5th Year CHRIS REYNOLDS Senior Assoc. Athletics Director 7th Year CATHY NAREY Administrative Assistant 18th Year Tom Morris is in his fifth year as strength and conditioning coach at University. In addition to working with men s soccer, he also assists with women s basketball and track and field, and is the coordinator of Olympic sports. Morris is a 2003 graduate of Penn State University with a bachelor s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on exercise science. As an undergraduate, Morris worked with all Nittany Lion Olympic sports. Morris went on to earn a master s degree in health education from PSU in 2005 while he worked with the football team. Prior to joining the Hoosiers, Morris worked as the Director of Strength and Conditioning at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pa. Additionally, Morris is certified by USA Weightlifting (USAW-W1) Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (SCCC). Former IU basketball standout Chris Reynolds, BA`93, JD`96, is in his seventh year at his alma mater and his sixth as senior associate athletics director. Reynolds returned to Bloomington after three years as an assistant athletic director for rules education at the University of Notre Dame. In addition to serving as sport administrator for the men s basketball program, Reynolds supervises the men s and women s soccer programs, the men s and women s tennis programs as well as the softball program. Furthermore, he provides oversight for all areas of contract administration for the athletics department and serves as the department s liaison to the University General Counsel s Office. Also, Reynolds coordinates all public information requests and provides oversight of the department s diversity efforts in hiring and any other diversity related matter. During his tenure at Notre Dame, Reynolds handled coordination and education of NCAA and Big East Conference compliance rules to athletic department staff, coaches, student-athletes and the university community. Prior to working at Notre Dame, Reynolds served as an assistant athletic director at Western Michigan University. At Western Michigan, his responsibilities included working in the following areas: NCAA compliance, human resources management, and contract administration. Also, he served as a part-time faculty member. Reynolds began his athletic administration career at Michigan State University and has also conducted personal, professional and leadership skills development workshops for Nike, Inc. and the NCAA national office. A native of Peoria, Ill., Reynolds is married to the former Katrina Cazares. The couple has a six-yearold son, Joshua, and a three-year-old daughter, Olivia. Entering her 18th season as Administrative Assistant for the IU Soccer Program is Cathy Narey. She is an integral part of the program as she handles all the day-to-day office operations. Narey and her husband, Ed have three children - Christa (32), Shana (31), and Dustin (21). The Bloomington native also has three grandchildren.
