(AP) The New York Jets have acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin from the Seattle Seahawks. Two people familiar with the trade told The Associated Press on Friday that Harvin, a star in last season's Super Bowl but injury prone through his career, was headed to the Jets. The people spoke anonymously because the deal wasn't officially announced by either club. The 26-year-old Harvin has played in 60 games with only 47 career starts since being a first-round pick (22nd overall) by Minnesota in He was traded to the Seahawks in 2013, appearing in just one regular-season game because of hip surgery. But he had two rushes for 45 yards and ran back the secondhalf kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown in Seattle's 43-8 win over Denver in the Super Bowl. 2 P a g e

New York gave up a conditional draft pick. The deal was first reported by Fox Sports. Harvin has battled a thigh injury and was listed as questionable for the Seahawks' game at St. Louis this weekend. The Seahawks have tried to find a variety of ways to use him in their offense as a runner, receiver and on special teams, but injury woes slowed their plans. This season, Harvin has 22 receptions for 133 yards, with 12 of those catches coming behind the line of scrimmage. He has only one catch on a ball thrown more than 10 yards, according to STATS. Harvin's average of 6 yards per catch is last among all wide receivers in the NFL averaging at least two receptions per game. He also has 11 runs for 92 yards and a touchdown, and 12 kickoff returns for 283 yards. New York's offense has struggled and the Jets have lost six straight since opening with a win over Oakland. Harvin figures to team with Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerley as the Jets' main weapons in a so-far weak passing game with Geno Smith at quarterback. As a rookie, he made the Pro Bowl and the Offensive Rookie of the Year. Harvin's best season was 2011 with 87 receptions for 967 yards and six TDs. He also rushed for 345 yards and two scores, and averaged 32.5 yards per kickoff return. Rex Ryan's solution: Stay the course, fix it now (Barry Wilner) Associated Press FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) Credit the New York Jets with pushing the Patriots to the limit. Also credit them with another loss. The Jets' sixth straight defeat after an opening victory came in what was one of their better performances of a dismal season. Coach Rex Ryan isn't taking much solace from that. "It's been a big failure, obviously," Ryan said Friday of his team's record. "The season's not over, but you don't want to be 1-6. If you had asked me, I was thinking we'd be the other way we expect to win every game. Obviously, we are not finding ways to win. "We have done some good things, haven't done it for 60 minutes." So what's next? The Jets have some extra time to prepare for a home game against Buffalo, but they really can't breathe much easier because the schedule lightens up. Of course, it can't get much harder than facing Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Jay Cutler, Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in succession. "The big picture is that it has to be each day," Ryan said. "An old thing I got from Lou Holtz was WIN: What's Important Now. "It has to be on the right now. We can't look down the road. We just have to find a way to get a win. I hope that will springboard to other things." Perhaps, but not if they keep making the killer mistakes that doomed them in a loss at Foxborough that was a very winnable game. The Jets blew several coverages in the secondary, twice allowing touchdown passes by Brady including one on third-and-19. They had some critical penalties, with one holding call negating a touchdown. 3 P a g e

They wasted some timeouts, which made their final drive more frantic and led to a 58-yard field goal attempt that was blocked on the last play. Perhaps worst of all, they moved the ball extremely well in the first half and got four field goals out of it. For those who say it's important to put points on the board on every possession, it's even more critical to put touchdowns on the board against a Brady-led opponent. "We have to get better in the red zone. That is really a thing that is holding us back," Ryan said. Just as running back Chris Ivory noted after the game: "I thought we moved the ball really well, we've just got to score a little more when we get to the red zone instead of taking threes. That's the difference for a win for us." A win, something the Jets have not experienced since downing Oakland in the season opener. Yes, they've faced nothing but teams with winning or.500 records since their loss to Green Bay in Week 2 and the Packers currently lead the NFC North. And there was that gantlet of outstanding and nearoutstanding quarterbacks. But Ryan, who ducked any questions about his job security, doesn't want to hear or deal in excuses. "We can't deny where we are at, we're 1-6," he said. "The job is every day to get better and I believe our football team is getting better, it just hasn't been good enough to win yet. "The focus will shift to Buffalo immediately. You go right back, correct what you can correct off this tape. If something is hurting you, you will see it again (from an opponent). So make sure to get that corrected and move on. "Focus on one game is exactly what we will do." NOTES: The only injury of note Ryan mentioned was to cornerback Phillip Adams (groin), who left during the loss at New England.... After hosting the Bills, the Jets play at Kansas City, are home for the Steelers, then have their bye. NEWSDAY Source: Percy Harvin traded to Jets (Kimberley Martin) Newsday Six straight losses spurred John Idzik into action. The Jets general manager has agreed to trade a conditional draft pick to his former organization, the Seattle Seahawks, for wide receiver Percy Harvin, a league source confirmed to Newsday. The conditional pick in 2015 will range from a second- to fourth-rounder, according to ESPN's John Clayton. The deal is contingent upon Harvin's passing a physical. The timing is a major surprise, considering the Jets' 1-6 record and Idzik's glacial pace when it comes to making moves. But whether it was done out of desperation or to keep hope alive despite the Jets' losing streak, this season now is about evaluating second-year quarterback Geno Smith. And having more weapons never hurt a QB. 4 P a g e

The versatile Harvin, 26, has 22 catches for 133 yards and 11 rushes for 92 yards and a touchdown this season. On Oct. 6, he had three touchdowns against the Redskins called back because of penalties. Harvin missed all but one regular-season game in 2013 after recovering from offseason hip surgery. He played in Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in February, returning the second-half kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown in the Seahawks' 43-8 win over Denver. Harvin is under contract through 2018, but no portion of his salary is guaranteed beyond this season. According to Sportrac, he will count $7.1 million against the salary cap this season and $10.5 million next season. Money, however, is no object for the Jets, who have more than $21 million in salary-cap space and several roster holes to fill. And the good news for Jets fans is the team can cut bait after this season if they're underwhelmed or unhappy with Harvin. Harvin was chosen by the Vikings with the 22nd overall pick in the 2009 draft. He was traded to the Seahawks in March 2013 for first- and seventh-round picks in the 2013 draft and a third-round pick in Seattle -- which gave Harvin $25.5 million guaranteed, including a $12-million signing bonus -- reportedly had been trying to trade him for weeks, according to NFL.com. And within hours of the trade news, which was first reported by Fox Sports, rumors and anonymously sourced stories surfaced that Harvin is a malcontent. Nevertheless, his presence should instantly upgrade the Jets' offense if he can stay healthy. He has 303 career receptions for 3,452 yards and 20 touchdowns and has rushed 118 times for 775 yards and five touchdowns. He also has five touchdowns on kickoff returns. Jets' trade for Percy Harvin brings up one big question: Why? (Bob Glauber) Newsday The Jets have traded for Seahawks wide receiver Percy Harvin, which prompts us to say, simply: Wow. And then to ask, simply: Why? It's a rare in-season blockbuster deal, especially for one team that is 1-6 and essentially out of the playoff race and the other that is 3-2 and defending the Super Bowl championship. A Super Bowl title game in which Harvin showed just how dazzling he can be on the field when his health and his head are in the right place. This is now the third team for the former first-round wide receiver, who was selected with the Vikings' 22nd overall pick in 2009 and then traded to the Seahawks last year for first- and seventh-round picks in 2013 and a third-rounder in That's an awful lot of bouncing around for an elite talent, who spent much of his time in Minnesota dealing with migraine headaches, ankle and hip injuries, and contract complaints. When he's right in body and in mind, Harvin is one of the most electrifying players in the game. Unfortunately for the two teams that have invested big money in him - the Seahawks gave him a six-year, $67 million contract that included $25.5 million in guarantees - Harvin has been big on drama and injury, 5 P a g e

and mostly short on performance. He spent most of last season rehabbing from hip surgery, but the Seahawks gambled that he'd be healthy by the end of the season. Harvin played in just one regular-season game and had only one catch, suffering complications from the surgery that kept him out of action until the playoffs. He made it back in time for the divisional round of the NFC playoffs, helping the Seahawks to a win over the Saints. A concussion left him unable to play in the NFC Championship Game, but he came back for the Super Bowl and was a key factor in Seattle's 43-8 win over the Broncos at MetLife Stadium. He had an 87-yard punt return for touchdown to start the second half, and had two rushes for 45 yards. Harvin had what would have been a dramatic performance in Seattle's win over Washington in a Monday night game on Oct. 6, but the three receiving touchdowns he caught were all called back because of penalties on the Seahawks' offense. Harvin's moments of brilliance have been largely overshadowed by his injuries and his attitude, and unless there is demonstrable evidence that he will be a reliable presence on the field and in the locker room, we'll have to put this trade into the high-risk category. At 26, Harvin is still in the prime of his career, but as the Jets have already seen with another 26-year-old mercurial wide receiver they once traded for, the risk may not be worth the reward. The Jets acquired Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes from the Steelers in 2010, and Holmes turned into a major contributor in the Jets' run to the AFC Championship Game that year. But he also turned into a locker room distraction, and the Jets bid him adieu in the off-season. Good riddance at the time, especially once the Jets replaced him with Broncos free agent Eric Decker, who is a much more reliable player and teammate. Even with Decker, the Jets' receiving corps lacked a game-breaking type player, and Harvin certainly fits that description when he's ready to play. But all too often during his days with the Vikings and then his brief stint with the Seahawks, he hasn't been ready to answer the bell on game day. Jets general manager John Idzik has been widely criticized for not making bold moves and using up some of the $20-plus million in salary cap space the Jets created after getting out from under cap-constraining contracts of Holmes, Mark Sanchez and others. Is he reacting to the pressure by trading for Harvin, especially when there's a strong likelihood the Jets will have a new head coach next season? Or does Harvin figure into Idzik's long-term planning process? The receiver is certainly young enough to fit into that vision, but he hasn't been reliable enough to count on. That the Seahawks were willing to give up on Harvin so quickly ought to at least raise some red flags. And for a team that's already out of it less than halfway through the season, you have to wonder what the upside is, other than to create some buzz for a season gone bad. That hasn't been Idzik's modus operandi in his very deliberate roster construction, so perhaps there are other factors at work. Team owner Woody Johnson was enamored with another temperamental speed receiver in the offseason, but the Jets didn't pull off a trade for DeSean Jackson, who went to Washington. Maybe Harvin is the consolation prize. Whatever the case, it's a "wow" moment for a Jets team that has gone kaput early. But we still can't get away from that other one-word reaction to this blockbuster deal: Why? Rex Ryan on Jets' season: 'It's been a big failure' (Kimberley Martin) Newsday 6 P a g e

This is how bad it has become for Rex Ryan: The Jets became the first NFL team to lose a game despite a 40-minute time of possession (40:54), 200 rushing yards (218) and no turnovers, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The stat goes back to 1977, when time of possession first started being tracked, and it also highlights the dramatic downward trend the Jets are on. Ryan's overall coaching record is 43-44, but after going in his first two seasons and reaching the AFC Championship Game each time, he's the past four seasons -- including 1-6 in Each week, the Jets find another way to lose. And Thursday night's road loss to the Patriots was, perhaps, their most crushing defeat. Rather than contemplating how to make the playoffs, they need to figure out how to win a game. "It's been a big failure," Ryan said during a conference call Friday. "And the season is not over. But you don't want to be 1-6. If you'd ask me, I was thinking we'd be the other way. "We expect to win every game. Obviously, we're not finding ways to win, and that's what it is. We've done some good things; we just haven't done it for 60 minutes." With the offseason upgrades they made on offense, the Jets -- at least on paper -- appeared to be a better team. But the additions of Eric Decker, Chris Johnson, Michael Vick and draft pick Jace Amaro have done little to offset the lack of top-tier talent in their secondary. More than a week ago, Ryan stated the obvious about his coaching future when he said, "If we don't get this thing on the right track, I don't think for a minute I'll be here. I know I won't." Since then, his players have fought hard against future Hall of Famers Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in a five-day span. But both times it was Ryan's team that was left frustrated. Ryan's own frustration reached a tipping point after the loss to the Patriots. He punched a wall before addressing the media. His responses at the postgame news conference were dripping with sarcasm and agitation. "I hate losing," he said Friday. "And the reason I'm so angry is I know how much effort the team puts into it, how much effort the coaches put in, but more importantly, how much effort the players put into this. I mean, they're hurting, they're putting everything into it, and they deserve a better fate. "Obviously, you've got to earn your way, you've got to earn victories and all that. But I know these men. They deserve a better fate. And I think that's what's so upsetting. I would do anything in my power, whatever it would be, if I could find a way for this team to win -- not for my own benefit, but for these guys. 'Cause they deserve it." Self-inflicted wounds have become a recurring theme in the Jets' nightmarish season. Against the Patriots, they got good play from quarterback Geno Smith, who returned after a brief injury scare (left knee) to lead a comeback attempt. Smith didn't throw an interception for the first time this season and running back Chris Ivory had a breakout game. But penalties (particularly in the red zone) and inexplicable defensive breakdowns have been this team's calling card. 7 P a g e

Despite the coverage breakdowns, Ryan praised his defense for holding its own against Brady & Co. He also denied that lack of talent is the biggest reason the unit is struggling. "To think that we're just going to shut people out to 100 yards passing or something like that, it's not realistic when you look at the talent of the six teams," Ryan said, referring to their recent opponents. "It has nothing to do with the talent we have. It has to do with the talent that we're up against."though it was obvious in training camp that general manager John Idzik had a secondary that lacked above-average talent despite $21 million in available salary-cap space, Ryan indirectly defended his boss on Friday. "We like our talent. Obviously, you don't like the injuries that we've had," he said, referring to cornerbacks Dee Milliner (Achilles) and Dexter McDougle (ACL), who are out for the season. "When you lose... two guys you're really counting on, you have a guy go AWOL [Dimitri Patterson] on you, it's hard to anticipate. You lose three corners that you really thought could contribute for you. "... Obviously, that's going to weaken you in some areas. We feel good about our players, regardless of who we have." Last season, his players won three of their final four games to save his job. But with each passing game, it's looking more unlikely that Ryan will return in "First off, I'm not focused on what's down the road. I'm focused on the right now," Ryan said. "I can't expect my team to be focused that way if I'm looking down the road. "You're right, this is a win business... But this is about the team and it's always been a team and that's the priority. The priority has never been my future. And that's just the way it is. Each day we try to go out and get a little bit better, and I think if we continue to do that, because believe me, we have done that, and if we continue to do that, I believe better days are ahead of us." No flag for referee in assist on Patriots' FG block of Jets' Nick Folk (Kimberley Martin) Newsday FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Chris Jones' block of Nick Folk's winning field goal attempt was the ultimate gutpunch for Jets fans. It sealed New England's win Thursday night, but it's the actions of a game official during that final field goal try that has Jet Nation fuming. On Folk's 58-yard attempt, Patriots linebacker Dont'a Hightower stood over Jets long snapper Tanner Purdum after he approached the line of scrimmage. But a referee moved Hightower over. No flag was thrown, and Jones came flying through to block Folk's kick. "It is a standard officiating procedure that occurs regularly," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an to Newsday. "In fact, it is on Dean Blandino's video that went to the teams yesterday and will be on the version of it that goes to the media today." Blandino used his Twitter account for explain Friday morning. "In #Jets #Pats game that is a standard officiating mechanic," he tweeted. "No different than pointing out LOS [line of scrimmage] to wideout." 8 P a g e

The umpire will remind players, Blandino added, about the safety rule that says a defensive player must have his entire body outside the shoulder pads of the snapper on field goals and point-after attempts. This was the second straight Jets-Pats game that involved unusual field-goal play. And the last one involved Jones as well. Last October, he blocked a 56-yard field goal attempt by Folk in overtime. But Jones was called for a 15-yard penalty for pushing teammate Will Svitek into the line of scrimmage. The friendly shove was a violation of a newly implemented NFL rule and Folk was granted another try -- this time from 42 yards out. Folk nailed the kick and the Jets won, 30-27, at MetLife Stadium. THE RECORD Rex Ryan calls Jets season so far 'a big failure' (Matt Ehalt) The Record The early portion of the season always was meant to test the Jets' mettle, pitting them against six consecutive Pro Bowl quarterbacks beginning in Week 2. They entered that stretch with one win, and after Thursday's crushing loss to the Patriots, they exited the stanza stuck on that lone victory. Even as coach Rex Ryan sees improvement from the team, the Jets' 1-6 record has them close to irrelevancy before the midpoint of the season. "It's been a big failure obviously. The season's not over, but you don't want to be 1-6," Ryan said on a conference call before the team traded for Percy Harvin. "If you had asked me, I'd have thought we'd be the other way. We expect to win every game. Obviously we're not finding ways to win and that's really what it is. We've done some good things, we haven't done it for 60 minutes." With these losses, Ryan's job security has become a hot topic, as the Jets seemingly are headed toward missing the playoffs for a fourth straight season. Ryan, who was composed after being combative at times following Thursday's defeat, did not address specifically whether this losing streak has him concerned about his status moving forward. The Jets have not made the playoffs since Ryan's second season in "I'm not focused on what's down the road. I'm focused on the right now. I can't expect the team to be focused that way if I'm looking down the road," Ryan said. "This is a wins business, I understand that no doubt. It's always about the team and that's always the priority. Each day we try to go out and get a little bit better. I think if we continue to do that we have done that I believe better days are ahead of us." Entering the season, the six-week stretch of Pro Bowl quarterbacks was slated to make or break the Jets season, and the conclusion thus far is it has broken the Jets. They were able to hang close with those teams except for one game a blowout loss in San Diego but could not make the necessary plays to win. While Ryan would not blame his maligned secondary for the team's struggles, the defensive backs did little to help the Jets in any of these games. 9 P a g e

The group of Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler, Matt Stafford, Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady combined to throw16 touchdowns and one interception while averaging 275 passing yards per game. Brady threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns Thursday. Ryan said he likes the talent in the Jets secondary but acknowledged the team is hurting in that area because of injuries and other issues. The coach added that he believes the Jets fared better statistically than most teams would against the unit of top signal-callers. "We've had a tough go of it at the corner spot," Ryan said. "Lose a [Dee] Milliner, lose a [Dexter] McDougle, two guys you really count on, and have a guy [Dimitri Patterson] go AWOL on you, that's hard to anticipate that you lose three corners you think can help." With the hellacious stretch over, the Jets now will attempt to right the ship against the softest part of the schedule. Time is running out on them, and they'll have essentially another must-win game next Sunday when they host the Bills. "We just have to find a way to get a win. I think that will springboard us to other things," Ryan said. "We can't deny where we're at. The job every day is to get better and I believe our football team is getting better. It just hasn't been good enough to win yet." Jets' Rex Ryan OK with ref's warning on field goal (Matt Ehalt) The Record Jets coach Rex Ryan did not have an issue with an official telling Patriots linebacker Dont'a Hightower not to stand over the center which would've resulted in a penalty against New England before the blocked kick on the final play of Thursday's game. "I think that's the best officiating crew in the league in my opinion," Ryan said on a conference call Friday. "This league is about protecting the players and that's the way it should be. Something like that happens while trying to protect a player before something has a chance to happen, obviously, that's a good thing for the league." Before the final snap of the game, Hightower walked toward long snapper Tanner Purdum before a referee touched him and motioned to move away. Had Hightower been over Purdum when the ball was snapped, the Patriots would've been penalized and the Jets would have had another shot at the winning field goal. The Jets lost, NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino told NFL Network that it was a "standard mechanic" and not an unusual call. He said it's no different than when officials at the line of scrimmage will point out the line to the wideouts. "It's on the player to under stand that, but we will in certain situations warn players to prevent things from happening, especially when it's a player safety issue and they're trying to prevent a potential injury situation," Blandino said. "Ultimately, it's on the player but this is something that's been a mechanic ever since this rule's been in place, and like I said, not unusual." BRIEFS: Cornerback Phillip Adams is dealing with a groin injury, according to Ryan. Adams left Thursday's game early and did not return, but an injury was not announced. The Jets are very thin at corner. Ryan 10 P a g e

said the Jets need to improve offensively in the red zone and do a better job defensively on third down when opponents are in the zone. Jets report card (J.P. Pelzman) The Record Rushing offense: A-plus The Jets rebounded from a woeful 31-yard performance against Denver by rushing for 218 yards (5.1 per carry). Chris Ivory (21 carries, 107 yards) went over the 100-yard mark for the second time this season and also scored the Jets first TD on a 1-yard vault. The line opened gaping holes even with second-year pro Oday Aboushi making his first start at LG, replacing injured Brian Winters. Passing offense: B QB Geno Smith had his first turnover-free game of the season, and threw for 226 yards and one TD. But the protection was spotty, as he was sacked three times. And he completed only 20 of 34 attempts, sometimes missing open receivers and at other times throwing to well-covered ones. WR Eric Decker had four catches for 65 yards despite being covered by former Jet Darrelle Revis for most of the night. Rushing defense: B New England ran only 15 times in the absence of injured RB Stevan Ridley, but averaged 4.2 yards per carry. Much of that damage came on a 17-yard run around left end by Shane Vereen when the Jets failed to set the edge of the perimeter. That play led to a TD. Passing defense: C-minus Yes, the Jets often confused Tom Brady, who hit on only 20 of 37 passes. But the defense forced no turnovers and Brady threw three TDs. Vereen had two of those touchdown grabs, including a 49-yarder after a blown assignment by DB Antonio Allen, who also surrendered a TD catch by WR Danny Amendola on third-and-goal from the 19. Brady faced some pressure, but was sacked only once. Special teams: B-minus Nick Folk went 4-for-5 on field-goal attempts and saw his streak of 13 consecutive makes from the beginning of the season end when his 58-yarder was blocked on the final play, preserving New England s win. Ryan Quigley shanked a 30-yard punt in the fourth quarter, giving the Patriots a short field for their final TD drive. Walt Powell had a 62-yard kickoff return that led to a field goal. Coaching: B Rex Ryan got his team prepared and motivated four days after a very disappointing loss to Denver. But his team burned two timeouts in the third quarter, one on offense and one on defense, and that falls on the head coach. The Jets certainly could have used those timeouts in the final minute. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg stuck with the running game for a change and got 168 rushing yards from the tandem of Ivory and Chris Johnson. Jets acquire wide receiver Percy Harvin from Seahawks (J.P. Pelzman) The Record 11 P a g e

Owner Woody Johnson mentioned the Jets war chest when he spoke to reporters earlier this month when he was questioned about the fact they were more than $20 million under the salary cap. On Friday, general manager John Idzik apparently broke the padlock on that chest. The Jets acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin from Seattle for a conditional draft choice in 2015, according to a source. The trade itself is conditional upon the oft-injured Harvin passing a physical. Harvin has 22 receptions for only 133 yards and no touchdowns this season and was questionable for Seattle s game at St. Louis on Sunday because of a thigh injury. He sat out practice Thursday. The Jets next game is against visiting Buffalo on Oct. 26. Harvin also has 92 rushing yards and one touchdown on 11 carries. He also has value as a kickoff returner, averaging 27.7 yards in his career with five touchdowns. The trade comes at a curious time, considering the Jets are 1-6 after a loss at New England on Thursday night. The Jets offense has lacked a speed receiver who can stretch the field. The sixth-year pro has 303 career receptions for an 11.4-yard average and 20 touchdowns. But the injuryprone Harvin, 26, has played in only 15 games since the start of the 2012 campaign. Harvin, selected by Minnesota with the 22nd overall pick in the 2009 draft, missed the last seven games of the 2012 campaign. Harvin then was acquired by the Seahawks in a trade with Minnesota in March 2013, but played in only one game for Seattle last season because of a hip injury. The Seahawks obtained him less than two months after Idzik left their front office to accept the job with the Jets. Idzik is good friends with Seattle general manager John Schneider, his boss when he was with the Seahawks. Seattle gave the Vikings first- and seventh-round picks in 2013, and a third-rounder in The Seahawks signed him to a six-year, $67 million contract with $25.5 million guaranteed. There is no guaranteed money due him after this season, according to overthecap.com. The Jets will pay him $7.1 million for the rest of this season. Despite having excellent speed, the former University of Florida standout has only one catch this season on a ball thrown more than 10 yards, according to STATS. Worse yet, his average of 6 yards per reception is last among NFL wideouts who average at least two catches per game. The move would seem to indicate the Jets continue to be all-in with quarterback Geno Smith, despite his struggles during his second NFL season. Smith, who has seven touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 2014, had his first turnover-free game of the year in the Jets loss to New England on Thursday night. Smith has been relying mainly on wideout Eric Decker, signed to a five-year, $36.25 million contract as a free agent in March. But Decker doesn t have the speed to be a deep threat, and the Jets evidently are hoping that Harvin can provide that dimension despite his mediocre statistics so far in Some critics also have claimed that Harvin has character issues. Certainly the Seahawks will get much less from the Jets in terms of draft picks than what they gave the Vikings to acquire him. 12 P a g e

NJ ADVANCE MEDIA Percy Harvin trade: 6 things to know about the Jets' newest receiver (Dom Cosentino) NJ.com Daily Clips Cont. west_receiver.html Well now. How was your Friday evening going? The reeling Jets, whom head coach Rex Ryan had described earlier in the day as a "big failure" because of their 1-6 start, just pulled off a blockbuster trade by getting wide receiver Percy Harvin from the Seahawks in exchange for a conditional draft pick. Let's get to the particulars. Here's what you need to know about the Jets' newest wideout. 1. The basics. A native of Virginia Beach, Va., the 5-foot-11, 184-pound Harvin starred at the University of Florida, where he won a pair of national titles under head coach Urban Meyer. He clocked a 4.41 in the 40-yard dash at the 2009 NFL combine, and the Vikings took him with the No. 22 overall pick that spring. He scored touchdowns in his first three NFL games and went on to become the AP offensive rookie of the year. For his career, he's got 20 receiving touchdowns, five rushing TDs, and and five TDs on kickoff returns. 2. A former Jets scout weighs in: Joe I can remember we had strong feelings and a lot of work on done on Harvin and we tried to make him a Jet back then 6:48 AM 17 Oct Health issues. The Daily Norseman has a pretty good rundown here, but Harvin has had issues with migraine headaches going back to his college days. He then had a lingering ankle injury late in the The Vikings traded him to the Seahawks in March 2013 for first- and seventh-round picks last year and a mid-round pick this season. The Seahawks promptly signed him to a five-year contract with $26.5 million in guaranteed money. But Harvin tore the labrum in his hip while working out in the offseason and spent 2013 on IR, though he's been healthy, has played in every game this season, and led the Seahawks in catches with The money. According to spotrac.com, Harvin is due to earn $7.1 million for the remainder of this season, plus salaries ranging from $9 million to $11 million through He'll also count the same against the cap in all of those years, provided he's still with the Jets. But after this year, none of that money is guaranteed, which makes Harvin a low-risk option for a Jets team that looks to be playing out the string this season with Geno Smith as its young quarterback. Harvin's deal fits perfectly with Jets general manager John Idzik's plan: Idzik has structured just about every Jets player's deal to avoid a significant commitment to high salaries in future years. If the Jets think Harvin isn't a good fit in their last nine games, they can walk away and owe him nothing. 5. What he brings. Speed, a word that might as well be Greek this season for the Jets, whose offense lacks a significant downfield threat other than wideout Eric Decker. Harvin gives the Jets a much-needed ability to stretch defenses and to be used in a variety of packages like the "jet sweep," which the Seahawks used to great effect against the Packers back in Week 1. Harvin also can be used to return punts and kickoffs, with the added benefit that he's a real, live threat to break one for a touchdown. 6. What's the catch? Because there's always a catch. Trades are uncommon in the NFL, but this is now the second time Harvin has been traded in the last 19 months, which is a bit of a red flag. They also swapped 13 P a g e

him for a single, undisclosed draft pick. And NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Seahawks had been shopping Harvin around "for several weeks." The Seahawks are the defending Super Bowl champs. Their offense is predicated on speed. Idzik previously worked in Seattle, and he's trying to build the Jets in the Seahawks' mold. The obvious is question is why the Seahawks were so eager to part with Harvin. Jets obtain wide receiver Percy Harvin from Seahawks in trade, report says (Kevin Manahan) NJ.com _in_trade_report_says.html The Jets, at 1-6 after a Thursday night loss to the New England Patriots, are not going down easily, even if head coach Rex Ryan, in the midst of a six-game losing streak, called the season a "huge failure" so far. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports first reported the Jets acquired Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Percy Harvin in a trade Friday for a conditional draft pick. Tom Pelissero of USATODAY Sports reported it's a "mid-round" pick, according to a source. A person with knowledge of the trade confirmed the deal to NJ Advance Media. Harvin has seen little action in the past several weeks for the Seahawks. Here's how Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune explained the relative inaction in a story today: Percy Harvin was supersonic in the summer. He has become ambushed in autumn. Finally as healthy as he'd been in a decade following offseason hip surgery, the Seahawks' game-breaking wide receiver had two catches on bubble screens and a sweep run in the Seahawks' first eight plays of this season. He finished the opener against Green Bay with seven catches for 59 yards including a 33-yard reception four runs for 41 more yards on offense plus 60 more yards in kickoff returns. The Packers were chasing No. 11 all over CenturyLink Field, and it opened up Marshawn Lynch for 110 yards on 20 rushes in Seattle's convincing, win. Was that really just six weeks ago? Seems like eons. Since then Harvin has 15 catches over the last four games, none longer than 13 yards. His average of 6.0 yards per reception is tied for 153rd among all 161 NFL wide receivers that have caught at least one ball this season. What's happened? Well, for one, every other Seahawks opponent saw what Green Bay tried and has done the opposite. Harvin says defenses are now coming after him at the snap rather than trying to catch him after it. Expect the St. Louis Rams (1-4) to do the same Sunday when Seattle (3-2) visits the Edward Jones Dome. St. Louis has a defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, renowned for constant attacking. For sure, Harvin's seeing different looks now than he did that opening night. "Defenses have been coming up with, you know, just different defenses, making us think a little bit outside the box," Harvin said. 14 P a g e

The Jets signed wide receiver Eric Decker to a five-year $ million contract in the offseason, and Decker has been a solid contributor to an inconsistent offense when he's been healthy. Decker, who has nursed a balky hamstring, has 24 catches for 323 yards (13.5 yards average), with three touchdowns and a long of 29 yards. He gives quarterback Geno Smith sure hands, a reliable target and a solid route-runner, but he doesn't give the Jets an ability to stretch the field, which is what the Jets obviously hope Harvin can provide. Jets general manager John Idzik, who came to the Jets from the Seahawks, pulled off a deal with his former employers. After a loss to the rival Patriots on the road, Ryan refused to give up on a season that is circling the drain. And now the Jets, with $20 million in salary cap space, are spending some of that, though it's unknown how much of Harvin's six-year, $64.25 million deal the Seahawks are picking up. "Obviously, the season's not over, but you don't want to be 1-6," Ryan said. "You know what I mean? We thought that, if you'd asked me, I was thinking that we'd be the other way." NJ.com's Dom Cosentino mentioned Harvin when he had some pointers for the Jets a few weeks ago. Maybe they took his advice? Jets trade for Percy Harvin, source confirms, but after injury troubles, can he still excel? (Darryl Slater) Star-Ledger jury_troubles_can_he_still_excel.html The Jets have traded a conditional draft pick to Seattle for wide receiver Percy Harvin, a source confirmed Friday night to NJ Advance Media s Dom Cosentino. The news first became clear when Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported it earlier Friday. According to reports, Seattle will receive a conditional draft pick in 2015, which will range from a secondto fourth-round pick. This is less clear: Will the move prove a fruitful one for Jets general manager John Idzik, who is trying, to a large degree, to follow the Seahawks draft-based blueprint for building a winner? This sort of seemingly bold midseason move, with the Jets at 1-6 and riding a six-game losing streak, appears somewhat out of character for Idzik, though his profile as a general manager is still developing. Even Idzik, midway through his second year as a general manager, understands this trade is far from a sure thing. There are several factors at play in trying to determine if it can be productive money and injuries chief among them, though the former might not be as significant of an issue as it appears, at first glance. The Jets had salary cap space $ million this year, third-most in the NFL, according to overthecap.com. Harvin could be a costly acquisition, though it is unclear how exactly his contract will be tweaked in the trade. But he does not necessarily have to cost the Jets down the road. It all depends on what Harvin does this year, and how badly Idzik wants to retain Harvin beyond In 2013, Seattle pulled off a trade with the Vikings and then immediately signed Harvin to a six-year, $67 million contact, with $25.5 million guaranteed. 15 P a g e

Harvin will count $6.47 million against the Jets salary cap this year, per overthecap.com. They certainly had the room to accommodate that money. So that isn't a huge deal. Harvin s base salaries for were set to be $10.5 million, $9.9 million, $9.95 million and $11.15 million. Harvin also had the pro-rated signing bonus money for the next three years, but not for 2018, according to overthecap.com. These were his upcoming salary cap figures: 2015: $12.9 million (now will be $10.5 million, per overthecap.com) 2016: $12.3 million 2017: $12.35 million 2018: $11.15 million But here s the thing: None of Harvin s 2015 money is guaranteed, as Jason Fitzgerald noted in his insightful piece at overthecap.com. So if Harvin doesn t perform this year, the Jets can cut him, or tweak his contract, to a lower price. An outright release of Harvin would not cost the Jets anything in future salary cap obligations, according to Fitzgerald. The Jets are not angling for a playoff bid this year, since their season is lost. So does Idzik view Harvin as part of his long-term plans? The answer to that question depends on what Harvin is able to accomplish during the rest of If Harvin doesn t perform, the Jets can part ways with him easily. Harvin is still relatively young 26. But he has struggled to remain healthy of late. In his first three seasons, he missed three combined games. In 2012, he was limited to nine games by an ankle injury. Last year, he played in just one regular season game, after coming off hip surgery. Idzik, who worked in Seattle s front office before the Jets hired him, was at MetLife Stadium for the Seahawks Super Bowl blowout win over the Broncos. He saw first-hand why Harvin is such a tantalizing player. He returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. He ran twice for 45 yards, proving particularly dangerous on jet/fly sweeps which conjured memories of his college days at Florida, where he thrived on such plays in Urban Meyer s spread offense. Still, 10 combined games played from is a red flag. But as the Seahawks assessed Harvin, and whether he fit into their long-term plans, general manager John Schneider decided that he did not. In five games this season, Harvin had just 22 catches and 11 rushes. Seattle seemed to be phasing him out lately. Over the past two games combined, he had just seven catches and five rushes. The Jets offense desperately needed more speed somebody, anybody, to stretch the field deep (or wide, in the case of those jet sweeps), to prevent defenses from stacking the box and committing so much to stopping the Jets running game. Can Harvin still be that open-field threat, with his speed and shiftiness? Can he prove a successful complementary piece to Decker in the coming years? Or will his be a short-term marriage between Idzik and Harvin? He has thrived in the slot, but the Jets already have a slot receiver in Jeremy Kerley. He has, however, not been a major factor in recent weeks seven catches, on 21 targets, for 60 yards in the past four games. This is the final year of Kerley s rookie contract. How will offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg use Harvin in his West Coast offense, in this lost season that now has some added intrigue? Will the Jets decide to play Harvin in the slot, in place of Kerley? Does the arrival of Harvin signal the end of Kerley s time with the Jets? Could Harvin s presence decrease the playing time of No. 2 outside receiver David Nelson, a solid but not spectacular player? 16 P a g e

For a Jets organization soon to be in transition, as coach Rex Ryan likely will be fired after the season, the surprising trade for Harvin brings those questions and many more. Jets coach Rex Ryan might be dead coach walking, but they love him in Boston (Kevin Manahan) NJ.com hey_love_him_in_boston.html You want Rex Ryan fired. Most of you, anyway. You want the Jets those NFL's legendary losers power-washed from top to Buttfumble bottom after this disaster of a season ends. And, hey, if the janitors in Florham Park could haul Geno Smith and John Idzik to the curb, too, that would be great. (Idzik should leave that $20 million in cap space he's hoarding, of course.) But in Boston, they love Rex, or at least the reporters and columnists do. Then again, they spend their days trying to pry grunts from the Reluctant Hoodie, so it's no surprise that (win-loss records aside) the Boston media would trade head coaches in a heartbeat. (Heck, the last time Bill Belichick punched a wall probably was when the Spygate videos were late coming back from Fotomat.) Here's a sampling of the sympathy Ryan received from those homahs in Bahstan after the Jets' loss on Thursday night left them 1-6: Christopher L. Gasper, Boston Globe: Thanks to Patriots defensive tackle Chris Jones blocking Nick Folk s 58-yard field goal attempt with five seconds left, [Rex] Ryan s Jets suffered their sixth consecutive loss and sank to 1-6 on the season, a season that is looking increasingly like it will be Ryan s last in New York. Compassion for Ryan in these parts will be in short supply, many happy to see the outspoken coach s demise. But despite his team s record, Ryan reminded Patriots fans again that he doesn t just talk a good game. He can coach one, too. On talent alone, Ryan s Jets had no business being in this game. But Ryan pulled the strings most of the night that allowed his shell of a team to outexecute the Patriots. It would have been easy for the Jets to be roadkill for the Patriots, but Gang Green hung around like an unwelcome house guest. Vociferous Rex had his team ready to play on a short week. The Jets outgained the Patriots, 423 yards to 323. They ran 43 times for a season-high 218 yards. They held the ball for 40 minutes and 54 seconds. They didn t punt until there was 1:44 left in the third quarter. They committed zero turnovers. And they lost because they have a patchwork secondary and shaky young quarterback. I m not shell-shocked at all, said a disappointed and defiant Ryan. I m a little upset because our record is what it is. I m not shell-shocked by any stretch, by any stretch. We did what we wanted to do on them. We were able to control the football, run the football. We did those things that it takes to win the game. We just made too many darn mistakes. That s what it is. Ryan s body and his roster have both been transformed since he became the HC of the NYJ in His stomach and the talent on his roster have thinned in equal measure. His body has shed weight and his roster has acquired dead weight. 17 P a g e
