5 Season Outlook Sixteen student-athletes. Nine different countries. Eight newcomers. One common goal. It s all a numbers game for the Fairfield University men s basketball. While the most important number may be the team s win total, Head Coach Sydney Johnson will try to work the aforementioned numbers into a success story by the beginning of March. With student-athletes hailing from nine different countries, the Stags have one of the most diverse roster in college basketball as Johnson and his staff reached out around the world to comprise this year s team. Eight of Fairfield s 16-man roster will be donning a Stags uniform for the first time this year. But regardless of which label you choose - newcomer or veteran, foreign or domestic the collective 16 players all share the same goal winning a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship and earning a berth to the NCAA tournament. Since Johnson s arrival, the Stags have collected berths to the CIT Postseason Tournament on four occasions including last year s appearance. That experience and success could translate into what Johnson hopes will be a fifth postseason invitation in The Stags have a trio of seniors who will serve as the cornerstone of Johnson s plans, namely Tyler Nelson, Jerome Segura, and Jared Harper. This trio has led a resurgence of Fairfield basketball over the last two seasons, combining to win 35 games during that stretch. Nelson and Segura should hold two of the team s starting five positions with Segura setting up the offense and Nelson finishing it off. Segura should move into the program s assist leader list this season, needing just under 30 passes to crack that top 10. He dished off 122 assists in , just one season removed from handing off 160 assists in his sophomore year. While Segura is creating the plays, Nelson is most likely going to finish off the sets. The guard comes back for his senior season as the top returning scorer in the MAAC, netting 19.5 points per game a year ago. For these reasons, the MAAC head coaches selected Nelson as the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. Harper reestablished himself within the program last season after missing nearly his entire sophomore campaign due to injury. The guard worked his way into 12 games last season as he regained his role as a reserve. His ability to handle the ball along with his ability to shoot from distance could help Harper garner more playing time in the campaign. Fairfield s junior class reaffirmed its place in the plans of Coach Johnson, establishing themselves not only among their teammates but also within the conference. Jonathan Kasibabu, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Matija Milin, a native of Serbia, did not fall victim to any sophomore slump. Kasibabu ended the year as one of the top five shot blockers in the MAAC, averaging 1.4 per game, and represents the top returning rebounder on the Fairfield roster with 4.9 caroms per contest. Milin registered 8.3 points per game last season which makes him the team s runner-up to Nelson in terms of returning scorers for the Stags. The forward nearly had a clean split between games as a starter and as a reserve a year ago, averaging 9.9 points when in the first five and 6.1 points when coming off the bench. The underclassmen start with the return of sophomores Olivier Cadieux, Thomas

6 Season Outlook Nolan, and Aidas Kavaliauskas along with the addition of Ferron Flavors Jr. Cadieux and Nolan both were used throughout the season, mainly as reserves. Nolan did earn one start during the year which he translated into a career-best 11 points at Monmouth and led the guard to a 2.0 scoring average. Cadieux missed a portion of the season with injury but still managed to earn time in 18 contests, averaging 1.3 points per game. Kavaliauskas sat out last season after joining the program midseason and hopes to contribute as a guard during the campaign. Flavors Jr. spent last season at Stone Mountain Community College and begins his first season with the Stags. The guard averaged 17.6 points and an assist per game during his 28 appearances and netted 20 or more points in 12 games a year ago, posting a season high 28 points three times. Fairfield will feature a large freshmen class that includes seven rookies on the roster. Four of the freshmen will contribute as forwards while three will serve as guards. The guards include Taj Benning, Alonde Legrand, and Jesus Cruz, while the forwards are Kevin Senghore-Peterson, Wassef Methnani, Omar El-Sheikh, and Aziz Essa. Benning garnered an honorable mention berth to the All-State team in addition to first team accolades for All-County and All-League as a senior at Bergen Catholic High School. Legrand comes to Fairfield via Berkshire Academy where he excelled on the court as one of the team s top scorers and play makers. Cruz joins Fairfield after spending the summer playing for Puerto Rico in the FIBA Championships in Egypt. Before arriving at Fairfield, he spent a year at Loomis Chaffee in Windsor, Conn. The front court players will also have an impact on this year s squad. Peterson brings international experience to the court as a former member of the Swedish National Team. Methnani and El-Sheikh played together at the Knox School where they were part of the school s first basketball teams El-Sheikh averaged 8.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in his six appearances for the Egypt at this summer s FIBA Championships. Methnani will serve as a defensive specialist and will make his mark around the basket. Essa spent two seasons at Brewster Academy. In his senior season, the team won the 2017 Prep National Championship and finished the campaign with 32 victories. The Stags will look forward to a challenging schedule that sends the team across the country once again, including stops in Texas, Indiana, and Ohio in addition to its normal stops around the Northeast for conference play. Fairfield will face the University of Houston for the second time in school history and first since Elvin Hayes ran the court. The Stags will also face nationally-ranked Purdue University in West Lafayette in early November. And, the team will play a three-game multi-team event with Jacksonville University, Gardner-Webb University, and Wright State in Dayton over Thanksgiving weekend. All in all, Coach Johnson and his squad will battle some of the best in the region and the nation with the hopes of earning a berth to the NCAA tournament come March and return to the postseason for the fifth time in Johnson s seven years. That s one number that everyone can agree upon.

38 Head Coach Sydney Johnson Sydney Johnson became the 12th head coach to oversee the Fairfield University men s basketball program when he was introduced in April, Johnson joined the Stags program after spending four seasons as the head coach at his alma mater Princeton University. Johnson is the first coach in 40 years to garner four winning seasons in his tenure at the University. During Johnson s six years at the helm, no MAAC program has more winning seasons than Sydney Johnson except for one (Iona Gaels). Johnson s historical achievements at Fairfield University also include: --Most postseason appearances in school history (4-2017, 2016, 2013, 2012) --Most postseason victories in school history (3) --First win versus an ACC team in school history (12/21/16 vs Boston College) --Second most winning seasons (four) in school history (the legendary Fred Barakat earned five winning seasons for the Stags between 1970 to 1981) Head Coach Sydney Johnson has completed his sixth season at Fairfield University, leading the Stags to the postseason in four of those campaigns. In , the Stags earned their second straight postseason berth and second straight winning season. The campaign included a 12 win improvement from the prior season and saw the Stags achieve the fourth best turnaround in wins in Division I basketball. In both and , the Stags finished with 19 wins in each season and garnered berths to the CIT Postseason Tournament. The Stags reached the MAAC Tournament Championship game, the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) semifinals, and defeated Arizona State, Old Dominion, and Iona, among others, en route to a 22-win season. Fairfield posted 41 victories under Coach Johnson in his first two seasons and 74 wins overall. His 41 wins through his first two campaigns ties him for the most by any Fairfield men s basketball coach through his first two seasons. The Stags three postseason wins in were the most by any team in school history. Fairfield also led the MAAC in scoring defense at 61.1 ppg in his inaugural season. Since his arrival, five Fairfield student-athletes have signed professional contracts, namely Rakim Sanders (Israel), Ryan Olander (Lithuania), Derek Needham (Lithuania), Colin Nickerson (Canada), and Maurice Barrow (Austria). In all ten of his seasons as a head coach, Sydney Johnson has placed a player on the league s all-conference team or had a player earn an all-conference individual award. Johnson has recruited and coached some of the most accomplished studentathletes in school history at two separate institutions. While at Princeton from 2008 to 2011, Johnson recruited Ian Hummer and Doug Davis. Hummer (1,625 points) and Davis (1,550) finished their careers as second and third respectively on the all-time scoring list (behind Hall of Famer Bill Bradley). Beginning at Fairfield in , Johnson coached Derek Needham for two seasons on Needham s way to finishing as the school s third all-time leading scorer (1,875 points). Following Needham, Marcus Gilbert and Tyler Nelson emerged as Johnson s most recent historically great players. Gilbert ranks as the fourth most prolific scorer in school history (1,661 points); Nelson currently sits at 1,440 points and with a strong senior season can pass Gilbert, Needham and possibly all-time leading scorer Tony George (2,006 points) on the school s scoring list. All told, Johnson has recruited and coached the #2 and #3 scorers at Princeton and the #3, #4 and possibly #1 scorer at Fairfield.

People follow him not because of what he says but more importantly, for what he does. His demeanor, approach, and work ethic will no doubt continue to make Fairfield one of the premier mid-major college basketball programs in America. Jon Rothstein, CBS Sports At Princeton, Johnson led the Tigers to the Ivy League championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. Princeton took the University of Kentucky to the final seconds before dropping a decision in the NCAA tournament second round. It marked the second straight season that the program advanced to postseason play, playing in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in During his tenure, Johnson owned a record as the Tigers head coach. Johnson helped turn around the Princeton program in his four-year stay as the Tigers posted a 6-23 overall record and a 3-11 Ivy League slate in his first season. After improving to overall and 8-6 in Ivy play in , Johnson led Princeton to its first 20-win season since 2004 when the team finished the year with a 22-9 overall record. That year, the Tigers tied the second-highest win total in Princeton history with a 25-7 mark. Johnson led Princeton s turnaround with an intense focus on recruiting that led to remarkable results. Both Ian Hummer and Doug Davis, the second and third all-time leading scorers respectively in Princeton history, were recruited by and played for Johnson at Princeton. Under his guidance, Princeton became one of the top defensive teams in the country. 60 Stags In The NBA Through the years, Fairfield University has been well represented in the annual NBA draft, going back to its first draftee in Larry Rafferty was the first Fairfield player drafted by an NBA franchise, as the Philadelphia 76ers chose him in the 16th round of the draft. Ironically, Deng Gai was signed by the 76ers as a free agent in 2005, becoming the most recent Stag to join the pro ranks. Philadelphia and the Boston Celtics have each taken a Stag three times over the last 30 years, with the former Buffalo franchise taking a pair of Fairfield players. The program produced two draftees in a single draft four times, beginning with 1968 (Bill Jones and Art Kenny). The Stags also accomplished that task in 1974, 1978, and In 1978, Boston was responsible for signing the two Fairfield players in that draft, namely Steve Balkun in the seventh round, and Kim Fisher in the eighth round. A.J. Wynder became the first Fairfield University player to appear in an NBA game when he signed a free agent contract with the Celtics. Wynder played along side hall of famers Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. Deng Gai became the first Fairfield player to don an NBA uniform since Wynder. Gai appeared in several games with the 76ers during the pre-season, and at the start of the campaign In the pre-season, Gai posted four blocked shots against the Houston Rockets, and had at least one block in his first three games. Over the last 30 years, 13 Fairfield players were drafted or signed a free agent contract with an NBA team. Fairfield NBA Draft Choices Name Year Round Team Larry Rafferty th Philadelphia Bill Jones th Philadelphia Art Kenny th Baltimore Rich O Connor th K.C.-Omaha Phil Rogers th Buffalo Danny Odums th Buffalo Steve Balkun th Boston Kim Fisher th Boston Joe DeSantis nd Washington Mark Young nd Los Angeles Pete DeBisschop th Seattle A.J. Wynder 1987 **** Boston Deng Gai 2005 **** Philadelphia Wynder was not drafted out of college but was offered a 10-day contract with the Celtics during the 1991 season while playing in the CBA. Gai signed with the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent. He was also drafted by Albany of the CBA. All others were drafted but not signed. Wynder and Gai are the only Stags to appear in an NBA regular-season game.
