PURDUE ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS SID Contact: Chris Forman cforman@purdue.edu Office Cell: PURDUE BASKETBALL Facebook.com/MBB Painter Nearing 200 Head coach Matt Painter could reach the 200-win plateau at on Wednesday against Minnesota. Doing so would make him just the third coach to reach 200 wins. Coach 200th win # of Games Ward Piggy Lambert Dec. 23, Gene Keady Dec. 28, Matt Painter Boiler-Gopher Facts owns a 37-6 (.860) record against Minnesota at Mackey Arena, which is amazingly the fourth-best winning percentage against a Big Ten team in the facility (min. 10 games). The Boilermakers are 37-4 against Wisconsin (.902), 17-2 vs. Penn State (.895) and 38-5 (.884) against Northwestern. is 7-0 under Matt Painter against Minnesota in Mackey Arena. Six of the seven wins have come by at least 12 points, the lone exception being last year s victory in triple-overtime. The nine overtime games played between the two teams are the most for against a single opponent. The nine contests have accounted for 17 extra sessions. The 180 meetings make it the eighth-most frequently-played rivalry in Big Ten history. First is Indiana- at 201 games. also has the seventh-most frequently-played rivalry with Illinois (182 meetings). Impressive Milestones Wednesday s game marks the 700th game in Mackey Arena history with owning a (.808) record in the facility. The contest marks the 401st game against a Big Ten Conference opponent with holding a (.755) record against Big Ten foes. The facility opened on Dec. 2, 1967, when a Lew Alcindor-led UCLA squad edged Rick Mount and the Boilermakers, Mackey Arena is the fourth-oldest Arena in the Big Ten (Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois). Almost Automatic is 82-8 under Matt Painter when winning both the rebounding and turnover margins. However, since the start of last year, is just 9-5 when that happens, going 73-3 in Painter s first eight years. is under Matt Painter when shooting 48.0 percent or better from the field, including 4-1 this year (Kansas State). Defensive Lapses Three weeks ago, was 8-2 and allowing just 58.4 points per game (40th nationally) and foes to shoot just 36.8 percent from the field (30th nationally). In just three games, those numbers have changed drastically as has slipped to 8-5 overall. Over the last three games, opponents are averaging 88.0 points per game, shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 55.4 percent (31-of-56) from three-point range. has also forced just 34 turnovers (11.3 per game) and opponents have 56 assists (18.7 per game) during that span. The most amazing thing, and this is probably hard to do in practice, is that in the second half over the last three games, opponents are 17-of-26 (.654) from three-point range. In the last three games, opposing starting point guards are averaging 14.7 PPG and 6.0 APG and have turned the ball over just five times in 101 minutes of action. The Boilermakers have allowed 80-plus points in three straight games for the first time since March 7-15, 1987 (Michigan, Northeastern, Florida). s Defensive Silver Linings has held its opponents to 20 or fewer points in a half seven times this year. Last year, it happened three times all season. has forced 11 shot clock violations already this year. Call In The Swat Team recorded the second-most blocks in a season in school history a year ago with 168 and early indications are that it might be able to top that this year. The school record is 176 ( season). has recorded 80 blocked shots to rank 13th nationally in blocked shots per game (6.2). It s early, but at the current rate (32-game season), would block 196 shots this year. Through Monday, the 80 blocks are the 11th-most nationally. Kentucky leads with 107 rejections in 13 games. s block percentage of 16.3 percent is 14th nationally. Including this year, six of the s top nine blocked shots per game averages have come during the Matt Painter era. The Boilermakers led the Big Ten Conference in blocked shots per game for the first time in school history a year ago. THE MATCHUP Category Minn. Samford IUPUI Grambling Kansas State Missouri BYU North Carolina St North Florida IPFW Arkansas St Vanderbilt Notre Dame Gardner-Webb It s Tax Season... Let H&H Block Help You s powerful inside tandem of junior A.J. Hammons and freshman Isaac Haas are dominating the paint and are off to a strong start to the season. Coach Painter will have the constant luxury of always having a 7-footer on the floor. The pair is averaging 21.4 points per game, 10.5 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game while shooting 105-of-199 (.528) from the field in 37.7 minutes per game. The duo has outscored five opponents (Samford, Grambling, North Carolina State, North Florida, IPFW) in the points in the paint category this year all by themselves. However, over the last five games, the duo is just 39-of-88 (.443) from the field, while accounting for 22 of s 59 turnovers (37.3 percent). Hammons (28) and Haas (24) are first and second on the team in turnovers. No other player has more than 20 turnovers (Davis). The pair is also shooting just 68-of-118 (.576) from the free throw line for the season, a number that needs to improve considering how much they get fouled. Who Is The Go-To Guy? has had a tough time this year finding a go-to-guy, as five players average between 9.2 and 11.5 points per game. Over the last seven games, is averaging 72.0 points per game, but hasn t had a player score more than 18 points in a contest during that span (18 by Kendall Stephens vs. Arkansas State). In the loss to Gardner-Webb, scored 84 points, but had five players score between 11 and 13 points. In the last three games, just one player (15 by Rapheal Davis vs. Vanderbilt) has scored more than 13 points in a game. In all, eight different players have scored in double-figures this year and seven different players have led the team in scoring. The Quick Yank Head coach Matt Painter has the luxury of always having a physical 7-footer on the floor, but it has been a struggle in keeping A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas out of foul trouble. Painter typically pulls one of them when they get a foul at the start of the game, meaning so far this year, neither of them have been able to stay on the floor too long. In each of the last three games and in nine of the last 11 games (Kansas State, Missouri, BYU, NC State, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Gardner-Webb), whoever was starting between Haas and Hammons have picked up a foul by the first media timeout. Three of the fouls (Kansas Sate, NC State, Notre Dame) came in the first two minutes of the game. Between them, the duo has accounted for 67 fouls (Hammons = 34; Haas = 33). Per 40 minutes, Haas is averaging 5.7 fouls per game and Hammons is averaging 5.3 fouls per game. Mackey Success is 6-2 at Mackey Arena this season and hopes it can return to the success it has had in the building in recent history. The Boilermakers are allowing just 54.9 points per game this year at Mackey Arena and foes are shooting just 36.3 percent from the field and 58.1 percent from the free throw line. has held four of its eight opponents at Mackey Arena (Samford, Grambling, IPFW, Arkansas State) to 46 points or less.
