The series started in 1969 and the last time the two teams played was in UT Martin won the first three games played in the series ( ). Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt was the leading scorer for UT Martin in the 1971 and 72 games. Today s game is the first time UT Martin and Tennessee have played each other outside the Volunteer State. UT Martin is 0 1 against No. 1 ranked teams. The lone No. 1 team UT Martin lost to was Tennessee in Tennessee posted a victory over the Skyhawks. UT Martin is making its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, while Tennessee is making its 31 st appearance. UT Martin played No. 2 Duke in the first round of the Philadelphia Region in The Skyhawks trailed at the half and lost Heather Butler led the Skyhawks with 15 points, while Jaclissa Haislip led the team in rebounding with five boards.

3 Four UT Martin players Aubrey Reedy, Perica Glenn, Heather Butler and Heather Griffin played AAU basketball for the Tennessee Wings (coached by current UT Martin volunteer assistant coach David Hart). Jaclissa Haislip and Jasmine Newsome played for the Tennessee Flight. Hart s team, the Tennessee Wings, made it to the final eight in a tournament and suffered a loss to a team which included Tennessee s Glory Johnson and Kamiko Wilson. UT Martin has scored 100 or more points three times this season. Tennessee has not scored more than 92 points in a game. UT Martin is 18 1 when it scores 80 or more points in a game. UT Martin is 1 1 in overtime games this season. The Skyhawks lost at Central Arkansas and claimed a win at home against Eastern Illinois. Tennessee is 0 2 in overtime games. The Lady Vols lost to Virginia and Arkansas. UT Martin and Tennessee enter today s matchup riding winning streaks. UT Martin has won 14 consecutive games, while Tennessee has won four in a row. UT Martin and Tennessee won their respective conference tournaments. UT Martin won two games (Murray State and Tennessee Tech) to win the Ohio Valley Conference, while Tennessee won three games (Vandy, South Carolina and LSU) to win the Southeastern Conference.

All that changes this afternoon at Allstate Arena when No. 15 UT Martin squares off against No. 2 Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Chicago. The Skyhawks will put their 14-game winning streak on the line and battle the much bigger Lady Vols with four sophomores and a junior in the starting lineup. The Lady Vols, the SEC Tournament champs, and winners of their last four games will still five seniors. Four of the five are at least six-foot tall. The size disadvantage could give the much smaller Skyhawks a challenge on the boards. However, the Skyhawks are the No. 1 scoring team in the nation, averaging 81.1 points per game and one of the top shooting 3-point teams in the country (39 percent). Sophomore guards Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome have both scored 1,000 career points and beat Summitt, who played at UT Martin from to the 1,000-point club. Butler is the fastest player in UT Martin history to a 1,000 points. She did it in 50 games. Newsome did it in 55 games, and Summitt scored her 1,000-career point in 59 games.the winner of the UT Martin-Tennessee game will advance to play the winner of the BYU-DePaul game on Monday night.

UT Martin is making its second consecutive trip to the postseason, while Tennessee has made all 31 NCAA Tournaments. Coach Summitt s Alma Mater Tennessee head coach Pat Head Summitt played for UT Martin from At the time of her graduation she led the Lady Pacers (now Skyhawks) with 35 points in single game and became the program s first 1,000-point scorer with 1,405 career points. UT Martin sophomore Heather Butler has shattered Coach Summitt s records. Butler set a new record for most points scored in a game when she scored 42 points against Tennessee State on Jan. 30, Butler also scored her 1,000 point this season. She did it in 50 games, while Coach Summitt made it to the elite club in 59 games.

8 PAGE 5 UT Martin makes 13th trip to OVC Tourney The Skyhawk women will make their 13th appearance in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament since joining the league in The Skyhawks earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament by going 15-1 during the regular season.the lone setback was at Eastern Illinois (80-73). The 15 victories in the league are the most for the Skyhawks in a single season since The Skyhawks run to the OVC regular season title featured the play of freshman Heather Griffin; sophomores Heather Butler, Jasmine Newsome, Jaclissa Haislip, Perica Glenn, Aubrey Reedy, Megan White, Beth Hawn, Paige Smith; juniors Rickiesha Bryant and Shelby Crawford; and senior Taylor Hall. Newsome named OVC Player of the Year Jasmine Newsome, a native of Millington, Tenn., became the second Skyhawk to be named OVC Player of the Year after Zabrina Harris earned the honor in Newsome, only a sophomore leads the league with 5.9 assists per game. The guard dished out a season-best 11 assists versus Austin Peay on Feb. 23. Newsome, who was also selected to the All-OVC first team, ranks second in league and 18th in the nation with 19.7 points per outing. She has reached double-digits in points in all but two games this season with a career-high of 39 coming against Southern Miss. She is among the league leaders in field-goal percentage (4th, 44.5%), free-throw percentage (6th, 82.4%), steals (3rd, 2.0 spg), three-point field goals made (9th, 1.9 per game) and three-point field goal percentage (8th, 35.0%). Earlier this season, Newsome had a streak of 36 straight free throws made that spanned over five games. The mark was eight shy of the OVC record of 44 held by former Murray State player Paige Guffey. Newsome received OVC Player of the Week honors four times this season. Newsome and Heather Butler, a sophomore from Medinia, were named All-OVC first team for the second consecutive season. Butler is the nation s fifth leading scorer. UT Martin vs. Morehead State UT Martin won the only meeting against Morehead State this season, claiming an victory at Morehead (Ky.) on Jan. 23. UT Martin vs. Austin Peay UT Martin swept Austin Peay this season, winning the game at Clarksville, (closest OVC victory off the season). The Skyhawks defeated the Lady Govs on Feb. 23 in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. UT Martin vs. Murray State UT Martin defeated Murray State twice this season. 9 PAGE 6 THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT OVC TOURNAMENT NOTES A 16-2 UT Martin run, beginning at 13:48 in the second half of the OVC Championship game against Tennessee Tech, turned what had been a deficit into a lead. The Skyhawks would not trail again. Heather Butler put up her fourth 30-point performance of the season, finishing with a game-high 35 points. Jasmine Newsome put together her fifth double-double, with 26-points and 11 rebounds, of the season. It was her third double-double in her last four games. The victory UT Martin gives UT Martin its second consecutive OVC Tournament championship. This is the third time Tennessee Tech and UT Martin have met in the OVC Championship game. In 1999, Tennessee Tech defeated UT Martin but UT Martin got revenge in the game, defeating Tennessee Tech, UTM's Heather Butler scored 23 points and grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds in the OVC semifinal victory over Murray State. It marked the 20th time in 30 games this season that Butler has scored 20-plus points and the 33rd of her career. It was also the first double-figure rebounding game of her two-year Skyhawk career. Her previous best was eight caroms this season against Belmont University. She has scored in double figures in all 61 career games at UTM. UTM's Jasmine Newsome netted 20 points with seven rebounds and 11 assists for the Skyhawks in the OVC semifinal game against Murray State. It marked the 17th time this season in 30 games that she has scored 20-plus points and the 28th of her career. She tied her career-high with 11 assists, which she also tallied on Feb. 23, 2012 of this season versus Austin Peay. UTM's Jaclissa Haislip finished the OVC semifinal game against Murray State with 20 points, just the 14th double-figure scoring game for the sophomore this season. It was her third 20-plus point game of the year as well. UT Martin's 102 points in the OVC Tournament semifinal against Murray State ties for the second most all-time in an OVC Championships game, tying the mark set by the Skyhawks in Tennessee Tech holds the record with 103 points in 1983 against Youngstown State. UT Martin is second with 102 versus Eastern Kentucky in 1999 and Tennessee Tech defeated UT Martin, , in UT Martin has now scored 100-plus points four times under third-year head coach Kevin McMillan, including three times this season. UT Martin improves to 5-1 in the OVC Championship Tournament under head coach Kevin McMillan. The Skyhawks were 1-1 in 2010 and won both games last season, advancing to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament. The Skyhawks won two games this year in the tournament en route to their second consecutive NCAA berth.

HS PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE GUARDS UT Martin sophomore guards Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome were named to the league's Preseason All- Conference team. Butler (19.0 ppg, PT field goals per game) and Newsome (17.6 ppg, 4.0 apg) were both on the league's first team in , with Butler being named OVC Freshman of the Year and Newsome being named the league's Co-Defensive Player of the Year. HOME, SWEET HOME The Skyhawks saw their 18-game home winning streak come to an end against No. 19 Vanderbilt (99-84) on Dec. 7, The streak started against Murray State on Jan. 30, 2010 and included all 10 homes games during the season. SKYHAWK GAME NOTES NEW RECORD SET FOR 3-POINTERS The Skyhawks have made 283 out of pointers this season, 37 percent. With one game to go in the regular season the Skyhawks have already made three more than last year (283) and set a new school record for most 3-pointers made in one season. The Skyhawks are currently ranked second in the nation in 3-pointers made. THE LONE RANGER (FRESHMAN) After being one of the youngest teams in the nation the past two seasons, UT Martin's roster includes only one freshman, forward Heather Griffin from Rutherford. Like freshman phenom and OVC Freshman of the Year Heather Butler, Griffin prepped at Gibson County High School, where she played for current Skyhawk head coach Kevin McMillan and Skyhawk assistant coach David Russell. FORMER PLAYER TURNS GA Former UT Martin player, Alecia Weatherly, will serve the Skyhawks as a graduate assistant coach this season. Weatherly started in 26 of 27 games during the season, and cracked double-figures in scoring nine times (including seven of her last nine games). She also led the team in rebounding five times. ROAD WARRIORS FINISH TRIP AT 2-3 The Skyhawks suffered back-to-back road losses at Indiana State and Memphis to complete their first road swing of the season. The Skyhawks finished the five-game road trip with a 2-3 record.the wins were at Southern Mississippi and Saint Louis, while the other loss was a Purdue. UT MARTIN OPENS OVC SLATE WITH FIRST WIN SINCE 2003 UT Martin s Ohio Valley Conference victory on Dec. 31, 2011, marked the first time since the season that the Skyhawks have opened the Ohio Valley Conference portion of their schedule with a victory. UT Martin defeated Tennessee Tech 72-62, on Jan. 9, 2003, to open the OVC slate. The Skyhawks are now 6-15 in OVC openers since joning the league in SKYHAWKS PICKED TO FINISH SECOND The UT Martin basketball team was picked to finish second in the Ohio Valley Conference in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches and sports information directors. The Skyhawks - the defending OVC Tournament champions - garnered nine first place nods and 187 total points in the preseason. PERFECT START IN THE OVC UT Martin opened the Ohio Valley Conference portion of its schedule with three consecutive victories. The last time the Skyhawks won three consecutives league games to open a season was during the season. 11 PAGE 8 BUTLER BREAKS CAREER 3-POINTER RECORD Sophomore guard Heather Butler set a new career record for most 3-pointers made in a career Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, against Eastern Illinois. Shenow has 175 treys which is a new school record and will change with each 3-pointer she makes. SOPHOMORE DUO RECORDS DOUBLE-DOUBLES Sophomores Jaclissa Haislip and Jasmine Newsome recorded double-doubles against Austin Peay on Feb. 23, Haislip had 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Newsome had 20 points and 11 assists. Last season, McMillan's Skyhawks captured the first Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship in program history, downing No. 1 seed Tennessee Tech on March 5. With the victory, UT Martin advanced to make its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, traveling to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on the Duke Blue Devils. The Skyhawks played within 10 points of the ACC powerhouse at the halftime break before falling Consisting of a roster of mostly West Tennessee players, the Skyhawks went with a 14-4 OVC mark in despite having a roster that was the youngest team in America (only two years of Division-I experience heading into the season). The 20-win season was the first since and fourth 20-win campaign in program history. A dozen of UT Martin's wins were by double-figures, including six victories by 20 or more points. The Skyhawks were led by freshmen duo Heather Butler of Medina and Jasmine Newsome of Millington. The pair was named to the OVC's first team and All-Newcomer team, as well as the All-OVC Tournament squad. Newsome earned a share of the OVC Defensive Player of the Year award and became the first freshman in OVC history to be named OVC Tournament Most Valuable Player, and Butler was honored as the OVC Freshman of the Year. Butler ended the season as the nation's top freshman scorer (19.0 points per game) while Newsome was the third highest scorer in the freshman ranks (17.6 ppg) in all of NCAA Division-I. Butler, Newsome, Jaclissa Haislip and Beth Hawn combined to win 13 Adidas OVC Freshmen of the Week awards, which was also an OVC record. The Skyhawks also picked up the OVC team sportsmanship award in In McMillan's first season at UT Martin, he took over a program that had just finished 2-27 and went winless in conference play to go and make an OVC Tournament semifinals appearance before falling to top-seeded Eastern Illinois. For his efforts, McMillan was named OVC Coach of the Year. At Middle Tennessee, McMillan was the head assistant in charge of recruiting and onfloor coaching. His recruiting classes helped Middle Tennessee claim back-to-back Sun Kevin McMillan enters his third season as the head coach of the Skyhawks. SKYHAWK GAME NOTES Belt championships in 2006 and 2007, along with a pair of berths in the NCAA Tournament.
