2 Sun Devil History The Program The season marks the 33rd year of Arizona State University sponsoring women s basketball as an intercollegiate sport. ASU also begins its 23rd campaign as one of the charter members of the prestigious. Mary Littlewood coached ASU s first squad in 1975, and was inducted into the Hall of Distinction in Littlewood began her association with the university in 1965 and coached volleyball from After her one-year stint as ASU s women s basketball coach, Littlewood began her 20-year reign as the Sun Devil softball coach. She retired in After posting five non-winning campaigns during its first five seasons as a sponsored intercollegiate sport, the ASU program began to turn the corner in Under head coach Juliene Simpson, the Sun Devils would post an record (.705) over the next four seasons. The successful stretch included three consecutive post-season tournaments the 1981 Women s National Invitation Tournament, and the 1982 and 1983 NCAA Tournaments. In 1983, the Sun Devils finished 12th in the final national rankings. Led by head coach Maura McHugh the Sun Devils made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in after posting the program's fourth 20-win season (20-9). An event that would eventually prove to be the most significant in program history occurred in June, 1996, when Northern Arizona University head coach Charli Turner Thorne was named the head coach at ASU. From day one on the job, Turner Thorne and her staff were determined to take ASU a program that had one NCAA appearance to its credit in the 13 seasons prior to her arrival into the stratosphere of women s college basketball. During each of Turner Thorne s first four seasons the Sun Devils saw an improvement in their win total from the prior season. Before long, gradual improvement would give way to head-turning accomplishments. In , Turner Thorne s fifth season, the Sun Devils finished tied for first in the Pac-10 and earned their first NCAA Tournament berth in nine seasons. One season later the Sun Devils won the inaugural Pac-10 Conference Tournament and won their first NCAA Tournament game in 19 years. In the Sun Devils found themselves in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 22 seasons. In 2007 the Sun Devils set single-season school records for most wins (31), most Pac-10 wins (16) and most road wins (10) and came within one victory of earning a trip to the Final Four for the first time in school history. Last season Turner Thorne had the Sun Devils on the doorstep of the Final Four for the second time in three seasons as ASU once again qualified for the Elite Eight before falling to unbeaten and eventual national champion Connecticut. While Arizona State did not sponsor women s basketball as an intercollegiate sport until , ASU (then Tempe Normal School) has fielded women s basketball teams dating back to the 1890s. Pictured is the 1914 team which posted a 3-1 record under the tutelage of ASU football coach Fred Irish. ASU s first two-time All-Pac-10 selection in nine years, Amanda Levens helped lead the Sun Devils to the championship in the inaugural Pac-10 Conference Tournament in The Players The first student-athlete to make headlines on the Sun Devil hardwood was Joanie Smith, who played from Smith averaged 23.5 points and became the first ASU female athlete to sign a professional contract when she was drafted to play for the Milwaukee Does in One of the most celebrated players to help bring national attention to the Sun Devil program is two-time consensus All-American and four-time All-Conference pick Kym Hampton ( ), a former member of the WNBA s New York Liberty. In her final game as a Sun Devil, Hampton exploded for a school-record 44 points against Arizona. She was inducted into ASU's Hall of Fame in 1989, remains the only basketball player in ASU history (male or female) to score more than 2,000 points (2,361) and grab more than 1,000 rebounds (1,145) in a career. In 1983 Olivia Jones was named to the Kodak All-District women s basketball team and was an all-conference selection. In , she was ASU s leading scorer with 19 points per game. The squad, which included Hampton and Jones, also possessed 1980 and 1982 all-selection member Cassandra Lander. Known to be a quick playmaker, Lander s career highs were 35 points and 12 rebounds. A 2006 entry into the ASU Hall of Fame, Cassandra Lander ( ) concluded her Sun Devil career as the No. 2 scorer in school history with 1,670 points. Forward Sherry Poole proved successful on and off the hardwood. The Sun Devils No. 4 all-time leading scorer (1,370) and sixth-leading rebounder (585), Poole shot.803 from the free throw line during her career. Poole was also named the Pac-10 Medalist in 1987 the highest award the league can bestow on a student-athlete. She also earned third-team GTE Academic All-America honors in Jodi Rathbun left her mark on ASU as a point guard when she graduated in Rathbun set (then) record marks for most assists in a game (14) and season (143) during the campaign. A 2001 ASU Hall of Fame inductee, Rathbun was also impressive on the softball field with a career batting average of.361. She played first base on the 1987 team, which finished No. 7 in the nation. The seventh leading scorer in Sun Devil history, Robin Connolly was the first player in ASU women s basketball history to record a triple-double. Playing a big role in helping the Sun Devils get back to the NCAA Tournament in 1992 was honorable mention all-american Ryneldi Becenti. In just two seasons at ASU ( ), the two-time All-Pac-10 selection 114

She also blocked 59 shots, the seventh-highest mark in ASU history. In 2001 Amanda Levens and Melody Johnson were named first-team All-Pac-10 selections, marking the first time in school history that ASU had two first-teamers. In addition, Betsy Boardman earned Pac-10 All- Freshman honors and Turner Thorne was recognized as Pac-10 Coach of the Year and WBCA Regional Coach of the Year for District VIII. In 2002 Levens was named an honorable-mention Associated Press All-American, and became the first Sun Devil in nine years to earn back-to-back firstteam Pac-10 honors. She also became the 13th player to join ASU s 1,000-point club and just the third Sun Devil in school history to do it in two seasons, scoring 1,020 points in two years. In 2002, Kylan Loney set the school record for assists by a freshman and also earned honorable-mention Pac-10 All-Freshman honors. Jen Albert and Leah Combs were named to the Pac-10 s all-academic first team, the first time that ASU had two players earn first-team academic honors in the same season. In , Amy Denson and Jill Noe were named to the Pac-10 All- Freshman first team, while Kristen Kovesdy was an honorable-mention allrookie selection, marking the first time in school history that ASU has had more than one player on the league s all-freshman squad. Carrie Buckner earned honorable-mention All-Pac-10 honors. In , Loney earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors while Kovesdy was an honorable-mention selection. In 2005, Loney, who concluded her Sun Devil career No. 1 in school history in three-point field goals and No. 2 in assists, became the second Sun Devil women s basketball player to win the prestigious Pac-10 Medal of Honor and also won ASU s Heather Farr Award for her achievements in scholarship, athletics, community service and leadership. A member of two NCAA Tournament teams, Kristen Kovesdy ended her Sun Devil career as the school s all-time leader in FG percentage (.575), No. 4 in field goals (542), No. 4 in rebounds (659), No. 5 in scoring Sun Devil History (1,363 points), No. 7 in free throws (273), and No. 9 in blocks (49). In 2007 the Sun Devils bid farewell to Emily Westerberg and Aubree Johnson. The best of friends since childhood, Johnson and Westerberg helped guide ASU to its highest single-season win total (31) in school history and three NCAA appearances, including its first ever berth in the Elite Eight. The first ASU player ever to earn All-Pac-10 honors three times, Westerberg concluded her Sun Devil career among the school s all-time leaders in several statistical categories including free throws 352 (3rd), free throw percentage (.803, 4th), points (1,340, 6th), field goals (468, 7th) and rebounds (582, 9th). Johnson would save her best for last, earning All- Pac-10 honors for the first time in her career. She concluded her Sun Devil career sixth on the school s all-time list in rebounds (608) and fourth in blocked shots (69). The campaign would be the last for seniors Jill Noe and Reagan Pariseau, who were both instrumental in helping the Sun Devils build their current standard of annual Robin Connolly, who holds a number of spots among the top five on several Sun Devil career lists, was the first player to record a triple-double in ASU women s basketball history. success. In addition to her talent on the court, Noe will be remembered for the one-of-a-kind heart she showed in rebounding from a pair of season ending injuries to finish her career as the only Sun Devil to rank among the school's top 10 in points (ninth), rebounds (10th) and assists (sixth). Known for her one-of-a-kind competitiveness and tenacity on the defensive end, Pariseau finished her career as the first Sun Devil to play on four NCAA Tournament teams. Arguably the best all-around player in Sun Devil history, Briann January left an indelible mark on the Sun Devil program as she helped lead ASU to the NCAA Tournament four times, including the program's only two Elite Eight appearances. Arizona State's all-time leader in assists (538) and free throw percentage (.830), January was also among ASU's all-time leaders in steals (second, 265), free throws (second, 401), 3-point field goal percentage (fourth,.399), 3-point field goals (fifth, 132) and scoring (seventh, 1,317 points). Sparked by a school record 15-game winning streak, the Sun Devils entered the final game of the regular season at Stanford with a chance to play for a share of the regular season Pac-10 title. Unfortunately for the Sun Devils fate would deal them a hard blow when leading scorer Dymond Simon was injured in the game and lost for the remainder of the season. After opening the Pac-10 Tournament with a quarterfinal loss against USC, the Sun Devils were given a No. 6 seed in the Trenton Regional. They began the 2009 NCAA Tournament in Duluth, Ga., where they faced the University of Georgia, which was not playing far from home. Four Sun Devils scored in double figures led by senior F Lauren Lacey (5-7 FGs), junior F Kayli Murphy (6-6 FGs) and sophomore F Becca Tobin (5-7 FGs), who scored 12 points each while combining to make 80 percent of their shots (16-20) as the Sun Devils defeated Georgia ASU's defensive performance was so dominant that it held Georgia to its lowest point total in NCAA play and for the first time in 74 NCAA Tournament games the Lady Bulldogs did not have a player score in double figures. In the second round against Florida State, the Sun Devils overcame a nine-point deficit (40-31) in the game's final 10 minutes to beat the third-seeded Seminoles Senior guard Kate Engelbrecht's 3-pointer ignited a ASU scoring run over the last 9:27 of the game. The Sun Devils made 62.5 percent of their field goal attempts over the game's last 10 minutes, including 83 percent (5-6) of their 3-pointers. Providing the Sun Devils with a tremendous boost off the bench was junior Gabby Fage, whose back-to-back 3-pointers over a 31-second span cut Florida State's lead to a single point, 46-45, with 6:12 left in the game. Fage tied her career high with six points and set a new career high with six rebounds. And then there was junior guard Danielle Orsillo, who calmly drilled a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to break a tie and put the Sun Devils on top to stay. It was Orsillo's only make of the six shots she attempted in the second half, but it turned out to be one of the biggest triples of her career. In the regional semfinal finals against second-seeded Texas A&M, ASU came through with one of its best offensive performances in recent memory as it shot a season-high 62 percent. Briann January led the Sun Devils with 22 points (8-10 FGs, 6-6 FTs) to go along with five assists, two steals and one block. Junior guard Danielle Orsillo scored 15 points (3-6 FGs, 7-7 FTs) and senior forward Lauren Lacey added 14 (7-8 FGs) for ASU, which outscored Texas A&M 10-0 over the final three minutes to secure the win. For the second time in three years the Sun Devils would come up short of making the Final Four, falling to unbeaten and eventual national champion UConn The Sun Devils would give the Huskies their toughest game of the entire tournament as they were within eight points with just under 11 minutes remaining. Orsillo, who was named to the Trenton Regional All-Tournament Team, led ASU with 18 points while January had 12 in her final game as a Sun Devil media Guide 129
