W&L took both meetings with the Royals last season, including a win on Feb. 15 at the Warner Center. The Generals have won five straight against EMU at home. W&L and Lynchburg will be meeting for the 94th time, with the Generals claiming a edge over the Hornets. W&L has taken each of the last three meetings with LC and has a three-game winning streak against the Hornets in Lynchburg, Va. W&L and Hampden-Sydney will be taking to the hardwood for the 101st time, with the Tigers holding a advantage in the all-time series. The Tigers have won 12 straight in the series, including a win over the Generals on last Feb. 8 in Lexington. THE HEAD GENERAL: Adam Hutchinson (Amherst '93) is in his first season as the head coach at Washington and Lee. Hutchinson came to W&L from Case Western Reserve University, where he posted a record in two seasons. Hutchinson also served as the head coach at Steven's Tech for two seasons and claims a (.309) overall record in five seasons as a head coach. Hutchinson is assisted by Ryan Kadlubowski (Rochester '03) and Curtis Buxton. Eastern Mennonite is led by first-year Head Coach Kirby Dean (Eastern Mennonite '92), who is 3-8 in his first head coaching opportunity. Dean served as an assistant at VMI for eight seasons. Lynchburg is led by first-year Head Coach John Swickrath (Denison '01), who is 3-8 in his first head coaching stop. Hampden-Sydney is also led by a first-year head coach in Bubba Smith (Furman '99). Smith, formerly the assistant at H-SC, is 11-0 in his first head coaching opportunity. UP NEXT: W&L travels to Emory & Henry on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm contest, before returning to Lexington for a five-game home stand. The Generals finish the week by hosting Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday (3:00 pm) and Randolph-Macon (3:00 pm) on Sunday.

W&L led at the break, but the Royals chipped away to cut the lead to one point (67-66) with 5:19 remaining in the game. However, that would be as close as EMU would get the rest of the way. Hettermann was one of four Generals to record double figures in the game. Forward David Will notched 15 points and 10 rebounds, forward Hamill Jones registered 12 points and five rebounds, while guard Mike Stuart added 10 points and six assists. Eastern Mennonite was led by forward Bryan Williams, who scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Guard Mike Culen scored 16 points, while forward EJ Arrington chipped in with 14 points. W&L shot 49.1 percent (27-55) from the floor and held a advantage on the boards. LAST MEETING WITH LYNCHBURG: Guard Mike Stuart hit a layup with 11 seconds remaining to lift Washington and Lee to a win over Lynchburg at the Warner Center. The lead changed hand seven times in the final 2:51 of the game and neither team led by more than six points at any time during the contest. Forward Josh Cobbs gave the Hornets their final lead on a pair of free throws with 37 seconds remaining, setting up Stuart s heroics. LC had one final shot, but Cobbs 8-foot shot in the lane bounded away and the Generals claimed the victory to end a nine-game losing streak. Washington and Lee was led by senior forward Scott Hettermann, who scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. Guard Ryan Flynn notched a career-high 13 points, while Stuart tallied 12 points and a career-high seven assists. Lynchburg was paced by center Ryan Pehanik s 18-point effort. Cobbs recorded 12 points, while forward Reed Fairchild added nine points and eight rebounds. LAST MEETING WITH HAMPDEN-SYDNEY: The Washington and Lee men s basketball team trailed second-ranked Hampden-Sydney by just four points (61-57) with under one minute remaining, but a three-pointer by W&L sophomore guard Ian McClure went in-and-out with 43 seconds remaining and the Tigers survived, Hampden-Sydney led by just two points (33-31) at the half, but pushed their advantage to 10 (58-48) with 7:01 remaining. However, the Generals clawed their way back with a 9-0 run over the next 2:21 to cut the H-SC lead to one point (58-57) with 4:40 remaining. From there, Hampden-Sydney guard Jeff Monroe hit a 12-foot jumper and a free throw with 3:08 remaining and neither team scored until the Tigers sunk 6-of-8 free throws in the final 42 seconds to ice the game. McClure led W&L with 22 points, while senior forward Scott Hettermann contributed 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Forward Hamill Jones added 10 points and six rebounds. The Tigers were paced by 15 points from Monroe and guard Brandon Randall. Forward Jason Holman chipped in with 10 points. LAST TIME OUT: Roanoke connected on 30-of-58 from the field, including 11-of-24 from three-point range, as the Maroons downed Washington and Lee, 86-63, in ODAC men s basketball action on Saturday evening. The Generals raced out to a 14-5 lead in the first 3:45 of the contest, but Roanoke answered the visitors with a 20-4 run that gave the Maroons a lead with 8:20 remaining in the first half. Freshman guard Coleman Lyons pulled W&L back to within four points when he capitalized on a three-point play at 7:44 before halftime, but the Generals would get no closer as Roanoke extended its lead through the remainder of the evening. Freshman guard Chris Halkitis led W&L with a career-high 16 points off 5-for-12 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-8 performance from beyond the three-point arc. Sophomore forward David Will notched a doubledouble on the evening with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while Lyons contributed 12 points. Sophomore guard Ryan Flynn rounded out the Generals double-digit scorers with 11 points. Roanoke s Jared Butler connected on 6-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc as he notched a game-high 25 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Kevinn Hunter and Drew Crowder both reached double-figures for the Maroons with 16 and 13 points, respectively. SCOUTING EASTERN MENNONITE: Eastern Mennonite is 3-8 overall, 1-4 in the ODAC following a win at Lynchburg on Monday evening. Senior guard Mike Culen hit a layup with seven seconds remaining to give the Royals their first ODAC win of the season. Sophomore guard Jason Sager paced five EMU players in double-figures with 25 points on 5- of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. He was followed by Culen (13 pts.), freshman forward Kendal Swartzentruber (12 pts.), freshman center Jason Lentz (11 pts., 8 reb.) and junior forward E.J. Arrington (10 pts.). For the game, the Royals shot 54.9 percent from the floor, including 47.1 percent from three-point range. For the season, Arrington leads EMU in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game. Sager is second on the team in scoring (13.9 ppg.) and lead the team in rebounding (7.9 rpg.). Culen contributes 12.2 points per outing. As a team, the Royals are averaging 76.5 points per game, but are allowing an average of 91.1 points per outing.

The Hornets will play Division I Wofford on Wednesday before taking on the Generals on Saturday. In the loss to EMU, the Hornets were led by junior forward Ryan Pehanik and sophomore forward Reed Fairchild, who tallied 15 points each. Sophomore guard Ryan Sweeney notched 12 points, while freshman guard Pete Manos added 10 points. For the season, Pehanik leads the team with averages of 12.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Andy Albright averages 8.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.6 steals per game, while senior guard Dedrick Craft contributes 7.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. SCOUTING HAMPDEN-SYDNEY: Hampden-Sydney is 11-0 overall, 4-0 in the ODAC, and is ranked third in the latest D3Hoops.com Division III poll. The Tigers most recently defeated Bridgewater, 69-54, on Monday evening at home. The Tigers recovered from a halftime deficit to limit Bridgewater to 16 points on 20.8 percent shooting in the second half. Senior guard Jeff Monroe paced four Tigers in double-figures with 20 points. Junior guard Brian Gunn tallied 12 points, followed by senior guard Brandon Randall (10 pts.) and senior forward David Willson (10 pts.). Sydney will play a pair of games this week before taking on the Generals on Sunday. It travels to Randolph-Macon on Wednesday and then travels to Roanoke on Saturday. On the season, Sydney is led by Monroe, who averages 15.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Randall contributes 14.5 points and 4.3 boards per game, while senior forward Jason Holman averages 11.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing. Senior center Mike Thompson (10.9 pts., 10.0 reb.), Gunn (10.8 ppg, 5.5 apg.) and Willson (10.5 ppg., 7.7 rpg.) round out the potent Tigers' offense. KEEP EM' UNDER : Defense does win games as evidenced by W&L's record in low-scoring games. During the last seven seasons, W&L is (.698) when allowing its opponent 59 points or less, 2-2 this season. STRONG START = STRONG FINISH: A quick start has been imperative to the Generals winning games. Over the past six years, W&L is (.684) when leading at the half. During that same stretch, W&L has won a total of 37 games, meaning that W&L has led at the break in just over 70 percent of its wins during the last six years. However, W&L's two wins this season both came when trailing at the half. DEAD-EYE: Freshman guard Chris Halkitis has been a "dead-eye" shooter from three-point range in his rookie season. Halkitis has hit a team-best 23 three-point field goals and is shooting 48.9 percent (23-47) from beyond the arc. He has at-least one three-pointer in each of the last nine contests and is averaging 2.1 three's made per game this season. Take away a pair of 1-of-5 performances (Bridgewater, Dec. 10 and Virginia Wesleyan, Jan. 4) and Halkitis would be shooting 56.8 percent from behind 19 feet, 9 inches. Not just a shooter, Halikits also leads the team in steals (15) and is second in assists (18) and rebounds (3.6 rpg.). HEART OF A LYON: Freshman guard Coleman Lyons has been asserting himself more and more as the season progresses. Lyons came off the bench to notch a team season-high 16 points in a loss to Chowan on Dec. 6 and has scored 12 points in each of the last three games. During that stretch, he is shooting 13-of-26 (.500) from the field. On the season, Lyons is averaging 6.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. HEATING UP: Sophomore forward Ryan Flynn is also seeing his game develop of late. Since the semester break (4 games), Flynn has been averaging 8.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 54.2 percent (13-24) from the floor. On the season, Flynn is averaging 4.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. ROYAL PAIN: Sophomore forward David Will has been a royal pain to Eastern Mennonite. In two career games against the Royals, Will is averaging 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 53.3 percent (16-30) from the floor. Will registered career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (12) against Eastern Mennonite last Jan. 15 at EMU. AT THE CHARITY STRIPE: W&L's opponents have hit (136) nearly as many free throws as it has taken (138) thus far. HOME SWEET HOME: After playing eight of its first 11 games on the road to begin the season, W&L finally gets to enjoy the comforts of the Warner Center. W&L hosts a pair of home games this week and will play 10 of its final 14 regular season games at home.
