2 March 2018 Welcome coaches and athletes to the 2018 Special Olympics Indiana Youth Basketball Tournament! Throughout the day, 18 teams and over 200 athletes will compete in 5-on-5, 3-on-3, and Individual Skills competitions. We are also pleased to announce that we have partnered with the UIndy Men s and Women s basketball teams to offer a clinic in the morning for athletes to participate in. This is the 47th anniversary of the Special Olympics Indiana State Basketball Tournament and we hope to make it the most memorable tournament for our athletes and coaches, along with your families. The University of Indianapolis is proud to host this extraordinary event on campus, and to have a group of students work alongside Special Olympics Indiana staff to organize this event. These students have spent countless hours to put together a successful event, and are excited to see the event come to life. If you see one of these students (they will be wearing the gray and red polos), be sure to thank them for their efforts in putting together the tournament. This coaches manual will provide coaches with all the important details for tournament day; all the way from check-in, the clinic, the schedule for the day, special activities for your team to participate in throughout the day, and awards. Also included in this manual is information for hotels, restaurants, local activities and parking. If you need any assistance, do not hesitate to contact our tournament staff with any questions you may have. 4 Team & Venue Info Tournament Game Schedule: Game times and court assignments are listed on the schedule for the day, which can be found on page 7. Games will be played in Nicoson Hall and the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center (RLFC), which are connected through an indoor hallway. Courts 1 and 2 will be in Nicoson Hall and Courts 3 and 4 will be in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. Team Check-in: Team Check-In tables will be set up in the west lobby of Nicoson Hall from 8:30 AM until 2:00 PM. A registration table for individual skills will be set up at the bottom of the stairs in RLFC, just outside the west entrance to the courts beginning at 11:20 AM. Any athlete who does not have a valid Medical Form on-site will not be allowed to participate. Clinic: For the first time, we are pleased to offer a clinic to athletes that will be run by the UIndy men s and women s basketball teams. The athletes will be able to enjoy learning skills like dribbling, passing, shooting, etc. The clinic will start promptly at 9:00 AM in Nicoson Hall and will run until 10:20 AM. when the athletes will begin to line-up for the Opening Ceremony. Opening Ceremony/Rally: Starting at 10:30 AM there will be an Opening Ceremony for all the athletes. At 10:30 AM, athletes are to line up in the tunnel in Nicoson Hall. You can walk underneath in the tunnels of Ruth Lilly to get to where their assigned team sign is. There will be signage and people directing the teams in the right direction. The Opening Ceremony will feature the athletes walking in to the venue, performances by the UIndy basketball and cheerleading teams, and a special performance by Boomer from the Indiana Pacers. Skills: Registration opens when the Opening Ceremony ends, approximately at 11:20 AM. Individual Skills Competition will be held on Court 4 in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center, with the first division starting at approximately 11:45 AM. Athletes will check-in on the lower level of RLFC, outside the west entrance to Court 4. Athletes can take the elevator or the stairs as the registration table will be located by both. Seating for family and friends is on the upper level of RLFC. Divisions 1 and 2 will start at 11:45 AM, divisions 3 and 4 will start at 12:15 PM, and division 5 will start at 12:45 PM. Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your division s start time and stay near the check in table afterwards, as awards will take place shortly after the completion of your competition. The schedule for the Skills Competition can be found on page 8. Special events: Athletes can participate in special events during their free time. Before they begin, athletes can pick up a slip of paper in RLFC 142 that they can then get filled out with each activity they complete. Once the slip is full, they can return it to RLFC 142 to recieve a prize. 4

5 Team & Venue Info Awards: The Awards Ceremonies will take place after each basketball game, as well as after each Individual Skills division. After a game is completed, our staff and volunteers will go through a process to ensure that the results are tabulated correctly, and the team placement is given to those at the Awards Ceremony. There will be two different locations for awards, one in the lower level of Ruth Lilly Fitness Center next to the main stairway, and the other in the southeast corner of Nicoson Hall. After your second game (or Skills) has completed, please proceed to the Awards location in that venue. Teams will be staged prior to receiving their awards and then be called up to the podium when the volunteers have the awards prepared. Families will be allowed to take pictures while teams are on stage. MedicaL: There will be a certified athletic trainer in each venue at all times, along with athletic training students. Students and certified athletic trainers will be located on the main floor of the venue with students in opposite corners. Although water and cups are provided, we ask that athletes bring water bottles to refill as cups may run out. Concessions: Concessions will be available at the concession stand in Nicoson Hall beginning at 10:00 AM. Changing Area: If teams need access to a changing area, there are restrooms located on the east and west ends of Nicoson Hall, as well as the north end of Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. Seating: Nicoson Hall has wood bleachers for specators, however there is no spectator seating in RLFC. In RLFC, there is a railing looking down to the courts for spectators to stand against. If your team is playing on Court 3 or Court 4, you will need to provide your own seating. Merchandise: Special Olympics Indiana souvenirs and merchandise will be available for purchase on the main level of Nicoson Hall near concessions to commemorate the weekend s activities. information: There will be an information table located on the main level of Nicoson Hall Need Assistance?: Tournament staff and volunteers will be happy to answer any questions you or your parents may have. Staff will be wearing gray or red polos, while volunteers will be wearing Special Olympics t-shirts, and will be visible throughout the venues. You may also contact or ask for any of the tournament staff listed previously in the manual. 5

6 Special Events All of the following will be in Ruth Lilly Fitness Center from 11:30 AM until 3:30 PM. Obstacle Course: Room 038 (Lower Level) Athletes will be able to participate in an obstacle course. Parachute: Room 036 (Lower Level) Athletes can play a variety of parachute games including waves, where the parachute is held tightly and participants move their arms to make small or large waves. Musical Chairs: Room 114 Music will be played while the athletes walk around the chairs. As soon as the music stops, the players must find a chair. One player will not find a seat and is eliminated, and one chair is removed from the circle for the next round. The game continues until one player remains. Simon Says: Room 114 Athletes will be able to play and obey the commands of what Simon Says. Dancing: Room 128 Athletes will be taught choreography or dance moves by the UIndy Dance Team. Photo Area: Room 130 Athletes will be able to use props and take photos with their teammates, coaches, or loved ones to remember their time at the 2018 Special Olympics Indiana Youth Basketball Tournament. Ring Toss: Room 132 Athletes will toss rings around a peg and play up to 21 points, setting a point goal for themselves or competing against one other. Indoor Bowling: Room 132 Pins will be set up and athletes will bowl, trying to knock down as many pins as they can. Hoops for Health - Room 140 Athletes will be asked to pick out healthy foods and/or answer yes/no questions. They will shoot a beach ball into a hula hoop to answer the question. 6
